Cleo isn’t a fan of the heartbeat, honestly.

Okay, so there’s a lot of things she’s not a fan of about Martyn, actually, up to and including the black eye she has from where she’d punched him, which she has decided to blame him for despite it being her own action, because if he hadn’t been so deserving of a punch in the face, she wouldn’t have a black eye! She hates that she can still feel phantom heat licking against her, hates that he left her all day, hates that she didn’t get a choice in the matter. There’s a lot to hate, really. Martyn should be impressed.

But the thing she didn’t expect, and realizes she hates, is this: she has a heartbeat. She’s lying on her bed, and she feels her heart beating, and it makes her anxious, because, because—

How fast is a racing heart, anyway? She can’t remember! She hasn’t had one of those… ever, really. And it’s not her heartbeat. It’s his. And now that the day has slowed down, it’s all she can feel. That disconcerting thump, thump, thump, thump, that crawls inside her chest and presses against her throat.

God, how do the living deal with this all the time? She turns over. She feels her pulse thump. She feels oddly like crying. She doesn’t think it hurts. The sensation is not something that hurts. She’s not sure how to interpret it, though, so her (long-dead) brain’s trying to tell her something is wrong. Something is moving like it isn’t supposed to.

Something is inside of her and it is moving. Martyn is inside of her and she wants him out.

The traitorous heartbeat keeps thumping.

She hates him. She hates him. She hates him.

(And she’s supposed to be dead.)

She can’t bring herself to sleep all night. In the morning, Scott asks, but when she tries to explain, he barely seems to know what she’s saying. She goes to chop wood, and hopes the exertion hides the traitorous, terrible thing that is alive in her now that she’s noticed it. It doesn’t quite.

‘Yearning, struggling, fighting for power’ books, hmmm 🤔 let's see.

The Bear & The Nightingale | Katherine Arden - a coming of age story (the winternight trilogy) with a badass female protagonist. Some yearning and a hell lot of struggle on the way to fighting for power. [Russian Folklore, Historical Fantasy]

Carry On | Rainbow Rowell - I think it covers all the three things you asked for, even though it's not very plot driven, so like, the fight for power isn't heavy (compared to tfota) and it's aka. Simon Snow trilogy. [Fantasy]

Vicious | V. E. Schwab - book 1 in Villains trilogy with only two books out (book 2 has an open ending; doesn't end on a cliffhanger) I can't say you'll find yearning here (depends on what you think as you read) but there's definitely a fight for power, rivalry and struggle. [thriller, mystery, fantasy]

A Darker Shade of Magic | V. E. Schwab - too freaking much a fight for power by side characters (who do have a pov) with some inner struggle and a little yearning. [Historical Fantasy]

The Song of Achilles | Madeline Miller - a standalone retelling with enough yearning and struggle as well as a fight for power which might end up breaking your heart or maddening you. [Greek mythology retelling]

Lovely War | Julie Berry - a standalone book with loads of struggle and yearning. It's set in world war I so there's that (but not a personal fight for power). [historical fiction, greek mythology]

To Poison a King | S. G. Prince - a fairytale-like setting in which you'll find the protagonist's struggle as well as yearning. There's a fight for power in there too (but again, not as heavy as tfota, and not the fmc’s) [Fantasy]

Another Thought on Victorious

One thing I desperately want from Victorious is a callback to that scene from Vicious where Eli speaks to the entire police force after having Serena convince them that he is a hero- only this time, I want it to be with Victor fully stepping into the public eye as a villain.

I’ve always appreciated the series’ more subtle take on superhero fiction and its focus on the powers, but... it’s the third book, most likely the last, and I want the superhero aesthetic to be embraced a bit. I want the finale to be big and dramatic, and who better to help push that atmosphere than Victor?

Just imagine with me; the villain gang needs a distraction for some reason, or EON’s having a public “EOs need to be stopped” presentation that they need to interrupt. Everyone’s watching, and then Victor just steps forward, a dark and venomous smile on his lips, as a few people fall to the ground screaming and the rest stand in terrified awe. Victor spreads his hands and announces that yes, he is an EO, and that yes, he is dangerous, especially when someone tries to threaten his second (or honestly counting Vengeful, probably his dozenth) life. That he will not tolerate anyone or anything that gets in the way of him or his allies. And that he is so much more than a faceless EO monster, he is a villain, and that he will destroy anyone who tries to play hero at his expense. 

Bonus points if there is a minor outfit change as a parallel to Eli’s mask. Maybe a red/blue accent of some sort? Robert Pattison’s Batman-levels of eyeshadow? IDK, I just think Victor should get the chance to monologue to a crowd at this point; he’s practically been prepping for it for the past decade. Give the man more opportunities to be a tried and true villain instead of just a sneaky killer. Double bonus points if Eli is somehow there to witness it and has a moment of terror and jealousy when he realizes he wants to feel that same level of power and control that Victor possesses in his place in the world. 

I think that would be cool.
