Hello there!

So, I wanted to share that I got your books like a million years ago, read them immediately, then lended them to a friend of mine around late 2019 and never got them back because of the pandemic, and them she had a kid, and got married, and I never seemed to be able to visit again (she lives in another city)...

ANYWAY, long story short, I finally got my books back last week when I visited her for her birthday and I immediately re-read A Year in The Cellar on my way back home and I'm now slowly enjoying Lux once again.

I just re-read that drabble where Lux remembers and misses being comforted and loved by the Hunter after listening to the song he used to hum playing in a commercial and by God, that is still one of my favorite things you have ever wrote.

You've made some incredible arcs that blew my mind, but I think as a standalone, this is my favorite Lux piece of all time, just wanted to tell you that...

this means so much to me! i’ve seen your name in my notes for years and i always get excited when i see you pop up. also, the fact that you liked my books enough to share them with a friend is like one of the highest compliments i’ve gotten.

ohhh, now you’ve got me thinking about lux and the hunter and comfort and recovery backslides… 😈

“Hey, Mom. Yeah, we got it; thank you, as always. I would definitely have gone insane by now without the care packages.”

“Yeah, everything’s… no, you’re right, everything’s not okay. It’s all—”

A sniffle.

“It’s really bad. Like, really, really bad. I know I have the least experience on the team, but this is messing with all of us.”

“Well, by now you’ve seen the news about it. The city, with the protesters, and— yeah, that one. We… we were too late to catch it on the way in, but on the way out…”

“Mom, it wasn’t anything like we were expecting. None of our guesses were even close. It. When we got the door open, it…”

A pause followed, filled with harsh, shuddering breaths. 

“Mom, it was a person.” 

“Yeah. A living, breathing, flesh and blood person. I think this means Hayden wins that bet you guys made, about those rumors of people having superpowers.”

A shaky laugh.

“Yeah. I’m sure Dad is going to make that reference too. But this person, they’re not— they’re not doing this for fun. They didn’t choose this. They’re not… hell. I don’t think they’ve had any real choices for a long, long time.”

“They were chained up in there! They were in that transport, and instead of having a seat, they were chained to the floor like, like how you’d transport a bomb. When Zeke asked their name, they replied with a fucking serial number. And yes, I’m sorry for cussing, but I think this situation warrants a little leeway on language!”

A long sigh.

“No, they haven’t been aggressive. If anything, they’re so damn docile it’s creepy. I don’t know if it’s because of whatever propaganda Government told them about us, or if that’s how they’d act with anyone. They flinch from everything, and I haven’t heard them call anyone anything other than ‘sir’.”

“I don’t know. I don’t know how you can help. Add some books on deprogramming brainwashing victims and clothes that’ll fit someone one size up from ‘Holocaust survivor’?  There’s so much, they need so much help, and I don’t even know where to start, Mom. And that’s not even touching on everyone else’s reaction.”

“Well, Zeke seems like he’s sympathetic, but that won’t change his actions if he decides they’re a threat. Riley is being pragmatic, and Tyler is, well, Tyler. It feels like the only person on my side here is the doc.”

“No, I didn’t even think of that. God, I’m so— no, sorry, you’re right, I won’t. No negative self-talk. I was preoccupied and didn’t think of how Zeke is going to have to report this and then we’re going to have the entire network breathing down our necks about them. Better?”

“I know it won’t change anything, but I don’t know how to just stop worrying, Mom. Not everyone is in this because of compassion.”

Another sigh. 

“Yeah, I got the extra from the people who were short-changed in that department. I just wish that caring didn’t hurt so much, sometimes.”

Hamster is a palm sized girl who is kept as a pet by a bubbly human named Ashley. Ashley is often at work during the day, leaving Hamster in her small cage for hours at a time with very little to do. Hamster gets lonely while Ashley’s gone, and wishes she could meet someone her own size so they can become real friends. Little does she know, someone is already watching her from inside the house.

Last night, as I fell asleep, I just randomly started thinking about Lux and his time with the Hunter and just all the Very Bad Times™️ he had in his life and how he's really such a good boy...

I love him so, so much

i love him too 🥺🥺🥺 lux is so good and kind and hopeful and broken 😭 i love how he develops as he gets older, stuttering less, helping others more, becoming a dad 😢

CYOA

Chapter 6. Clean

Ashley’s Pov

The poor girl is covered from head to toe in sweat, tears, and dirt from where most of it was swept under the counter where she was found. Her whole body quivers with shaky exhales, and she’s resting on her back with her eyes closed.

You can’t leave her looking like this; that would be disgraceful as a pet owner, so you dab a face cloth under warm water, and carefully wipe Hamster clean while little whimpers slip through her teeth. You’re careful of her left side where scrapes are littered across her skin, washing away any lingering grime until she looks more clean, and comfortable. 

Once that’s done, you give her a moment to calm down on her own while you tidy the bathroom. You keep an eye on her and make sure she’s nowhere near the ledge of the counter, but she doesn’t move. She ends up in a tight shaking ball with her hair pulled over her body to hide, and cover herself.

Once everything is in the trash, put away, and wiped up, you glance at the orange puff. Her shaking seems lighter, if just slightly. She’s gone through enough for the night and you really don’t feel it’s right to keep handling her. Though you did notice the brush on the floor as you were picking her up earlier. Her hair must be bothering her… 

Speaking softly, you lift her into your arms, careful not to rub against her makeshift cast. She’ll need help sleeping tonight, so you syringe a drop of liquid baby gravol into her mouth, and carry her to her cage.

You pick bits of fluff from her hair while you walk to ease the discomfort before placing her into the bedding after kissing her goodnight. 

To be safe, you also tie the cage door closed to keep her from falling again. You leave her alone for the rest of the night, and go to bed yourself.

When you check on her in the morning, Hamster is hot to the touch, and whimpering. Your heart lurches, and you scoop her to your chest while deciding what to do. 

Starting a GoFundMe seems to be less of an option and more of an obligation at this point. Her crying rips at your heartstrings as you snap a picture of her snuggled into your palm. You save the picture to your phone to upload once you have some free time. Hamster has quite the following on your social media, so you’re sure her fans will help you out. 

You promise her it will be okay.

"Ah, my sweet little bitch," Master murmured as he descended the steps. The door was still open, and Pet squinted against the light. Master often left the door open these days. They both know he wasn't going to try to run away.

He had been so distracted by the light that Pet didn't notice the knife until Master had brought it against Pet's cheek, terrifyingly fast.

"You're too unharmed, here. Too clean. You're mine, every inch of you is mine. Nowhere is sacred, okay?"

Pet nodded weakly against the blade. He knew. He had stopped feeling like he owned his body long ago.

"This is going to slow, and clean, and straight, because you won't move while I'm doing it. So everyone knows what an obedient animal I have down here. Kept chained up, waiting for me and only me, and doing anything I ask. Isn't that right?"

Pet whined, fear starting to clog his throat. Master smiled and began to drag the knife down his cheek. It hurt so much more than Pet had expected. Every second the pain doubled on itself, growing and burning and still the metal was pushing into his soft flesh. He balled his hands into fists, then released, then repeated. He curled his toes and held his breath. Anything to distract him and stop him from moving. He didn't want to know what Master would do if he ruined his perfect cut.

Once it ended, Master wiped the blade on Pet's other cheek, mercifully not breaking the skin. Then he slapped the side of his face that was cut, and left. Pet slowly lifted a hand to his face, feeling the blood dripping down onto his neck and collar, mixing with tears. It was as permanent as the collar around his neck, and just as symbolic.
