books i read in 2023
my goal was to read a book a week and while the timeline wasn't perfectly even, i did manage to get it to add up (and then some!). this year i focused on religion and philosophy as well as classics (of which im counting both as traditional "ancient or pre-modern famous and outstanding" types of books, but also famous more modern books). i also bolded some books that were really good in my opinion that have really stuck with me so if you are interested in the genre i'd suggest those
st joan by bernard shaw (play)
mary and your everyday life by bernard haring (theology)
theology of liberation by gustavo gutierrez (theology)
magnificat by elizabeth ruth obbard (theology)
piedras labradas by victor montejo (poetry)

4 great plays by ibsen - the dollhouse, ghosts, the wild duck, and an enemy of the people by henry ibsen (plays obvi)

the alchemist by paolo coelho (classics)
frankenstein by mary shelly (classics)
an american tragedy by theodore dreiser (classics)
is this wifi organic? by dave farina (idk how to classify this one either but it was also about recognizing bad-faith arguments, specifically when it comes to pseudoscience)
the nicaraguan church and the revolution by joseph muligan (theology, history)
catholic social teaching: our best kept secret by peter henriot, edward deberri, and michael schultheis (theology)

I'm sorry, Robson and Safechuck did WHAT
You heard me. They used the erotic fiction of an actual pedophile as their "statements" against Michael Jackson.
The fucker's name is Victor Gutierrez. He was part of NAMBLA - North American Man-Boy Love Association. It's literally a group of pedos pushing for the laws of north america to treat pedophilia as normal.
He wrote the book "Michael Jackson was my lover" and passed it off as Jordan Chandler's (the original accuser) diary, and in the book he claims the two were IN LOVE, Jordan consented, and they even had a "secret wedding", with vows and rings exchanged. Obviously Jordan denied over and over that anything mentioned in that book is truth, and the supposed "wedding" is never mentioned in his accusations.
And in "Leaving Neverland", Wade Robson and James Safechuck literally claimed that, at the time they felt they were in love and basically dating Michael, and that part of their abuse included... a secret wedding with vows and rings exchanged.
Literally all they did was change the tone from "This is a love story" to "Michael made us believe our abuse was just love." But they still had the nerve to not only falsely acuse Michael, but of also using the wet dreams of a proud pedo, who was probably masturbating to the thought of Michael abusing Jordan, and pass it off as "our tragic tale of how we survived something horrible."
Words cannot describe how immoral this is.

Finding Alex: An Adventures in Disney Prequel
A long time ago, long before Frankie ever became Disney’s Guardian or even visited the world of magic, when she was only twelve years old, a big change had happened for the young girl. Well, for her and her friend Pearl. At the time, their friend Alejandra had gone through major surgery. Months prior to the operation, Alejandra had told Frankie and Pearl that she was to undergo a surgical procedure that was sure to make Alejandra who she was really meant to be. So, the surgery wasn’t anything too serious, but it was something that would end up changing the trio’s friendship in a significant way. And finally, the day had come for Frankie and Pearl’s friend to finally be released from the hospital after months of recovery.
Frankie and Pearl waited in the hospital waiting room with nervous feelings and a bouquet of flowers to welcome back their friend. It had been quite the few months since the three managed to get together, for Alejandra’s moms wanted to keep their child’s appearance a surprise for the two girls. Pearl was excited more than anything, but Frankie? Frankie was more nervous than anything.
“What happens if-” Frankie began to worry.
“We’ll know who it is when we see them.” Pearl assured her. “Honestly. We’re smart enough to recognize our friend after major surgery.”
“I hope so.” Frankie said before grumbling a negative thought. “I just hope no one from school makes fun. Especially stupid Ty and Vincent.”
“What do we do if they do?” Pearl asked.
“Kick ‘em in the balls.” Frankie stated more confidently. “No one…”
““Treats our friend so shamefully!”” the girls quoted Jack Skellington in unison before erupting in laughter.
“We would hope so.” a voice interrupted.
Frankie and Pearl got scared looks before seeing two women standing behind them. Frankie instantly knew that the women, one dressed in a fancy pantsuit while the other wore a knee length red dress with a thick black belt, to be Alejandra’s mothers. Which meant that their friend was now released from hospital custody.
“How did it go?” Pearl asked eagerly as she handed the bouquet to Mrs. Santiago.
Frankie nodded in agreement. “Is-?”
Mrs. Santiago and Mrs. Gutierrez gave each other an excited smile before looking back towards the girls. And as if they had rehearsed this, both women walked to either side of the hall to reveal someone behind them. A young yet very familiar boy with recently cut and very wild hair wearing a shirt with the old A New Hope poster printed on it. The boy gave the girls a nervous yet excited smile as he shyly waved at them.
“Hey, guys.” he greeted them.
Both girls had surprised looks on their faces before the surprise quickly turned to glee and before the boy knew it, Frankie and Pearl immediately ran towards him with a warm and very welcoming hug.
“You look amazing!” Pearl told the boy.
“Yeah! I mean- Wow! Look at you!” Frankie added when she broke off the hug to get a better look at her friend. “This is a good look for you.”
“Thanks, Frankie.” the boy smiled largely. “That means a lot.”
“Okay, real talk right now, dude.” Pearl began to say. “Have you picked out a new name yet? ‘Cause, Frankie and I have been brainstorming ever since you told us about transitioning.”
“Okay,” the boy’s expression turned into a mischievous one. “Let’s hear them.”
Frankie and Pearl each gave the other an excited look before they both began listing out all the names they’ve thought of for their friend. And boy, was that list a very, very long and well-calculated one.
“Pearl wanted us to start off simple. Like Hispanic and/or Latino names.” Frankie began. “José, Victor, Hugo, Miguel, Héctor, Ernesto, Felipe, Oscar, Julio, Enrique, Javier-”
“And we got Luke, Han, Lando, Anakin, Mace, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Poe, Finn, Ben, Ezra, and Kanan.” Pearl added, listing names from the boy’s favorite film franchise. “And this is only half of the list. We haven’t even gotten to the full alphabetized version yet.”
“Which, I made and even drew little drawings of the ones we thought sounded cool!” Frankie finished excitedly as she dug into her pocket and grabbed said list.
“Actually, girls.” Mrs. Gutierrez spoke. “He’s had one picked out for a while.”
“And we’re sorry to say that none of those names are even remotely close.” Mrs. Santiago added.
“Oh…” Frankie’s face dropped into an awkward expression before shoving the list back into her pocket.
“Then what is it?” Pearl asked.
The boy took a deep breath and introduced himself. “I am now called Alexandro Manuel Santiago-Gutierrez. But you guys can call me Alex.”
So, if you remember from my Adventures in Disney story, at the very end was a facts chapter. And in that chapter, there was a part in it where I stated that one of Frankie's friends, Alex, was originally planned to be a female character but was changed to be male last minute. So, I headcanoned him as being a trans character. And yeah, I probably should've mentioned it somewhere in the story, but I honestly didn't think it would've mattered. Alex is, are, and be a ftm trans character, no matter what. This little short story was supposed to basically be what happened after Alex's transition, and how Frankie and Pearl were so excited and so accepting of Alex after he fully transitioned and wanted to show their support by fully ditching his dead name and pronouns, and even tried coming up with names for him to use.
I hope I did a decent enough job with this story and Alex's transition. If I didn't, I'm sorry if I missed something or got something wrong. Please let me know, and happy transgender day of visibility 🏳️‍⚧️!

froy gutierrez . cis man . he/him ➶ DID YOU SEE THEM ?! they’re finally back as a MENTOR, and you know they’re one of my favourites ! it’s DAMI LORENZ , the TWENTY ONE year old WINNER of the NINETIETH hunger games! i’m just so excited to see them returning to the capitol all the way from DISTRICT EIGHT! they won their games using A TWO HANDED MACE so their tributes will no doubt be desperate for their wisdom. the capitol just loved them for being so CHARISMATIC , even if they have been known to be SELF DESTRUCTIVE at times. they DO  have a relative in this years games ( younger brother ) and they DIDN’T volunteer to go into the arena with them . ( character IS part of the uprising )

FILE CORRUPTION. SEEK HELP FROM AN IT SPECIALIST.
dami’s story isn’t much different from any other boy in eight. growing up in the streets of the factory-based district, in a cramped tenement building. his mother worked as a seamstress, his father working as a deliveryman that hauled large rolls of fabric from one destination to another. many described the work of the district as ‘beauty in the making’, but there’s no beauty to be had in a district that has smog so thick that at times it’s hard to breathe, where people getting caught in large machines that tore limbs from them because they were stupid enough to go under it to fetch something that rolled under whilst it was running. behind the sequins, behind the glorious colours, there was blood-- much like any place within their horrid country.
dami was taught from a young age, again like any child of the district, to fear the reapings. seeing children that he knew from passing being called, shipped off to a capitol to watch them wind up as nothing more than another ‘fallen tribute’ that had nothing more than their picture in the sky at the end of the day to then be forgotten moments later by the capitol residents. the hunger games weren’t something glorious, no matter how the vile dogs of the city tried to tell them that it was something to be honoured to be chosen for. many teens put their name in more times for tessera, but thankfully dami was warned by his father that “if you ever put your name in for that, i’ll knock you silly myself and you won’t even see the reaping.” he was protective of his family, especially after losing an older sister to the games for the same reason.
it’s why his blood ran cold when his name, out of the entire district was only in the bowl seven times, it rang out through the air as clear as day. his father? was distraught. his mother? couldn’t even make it out of bed, battling a terrible cough that had been plaguing her for close to a year now that had left her bed bound, one that would claim her by the time of his eventual, yet still unknown, return to the district. dami thought that when he had said goodbye to his father and brother that it was the last time he was ever going to see them. dami lorenz was going to be fodder, a lamb to the slaughter who would be forgotten like a flash in the pan. or so he thought.
once he was in the capitol, he realised that it was all a game-- pardon the pun-- one that started the second they’re presented to the public on their chariots in the parade. “if you want to survive, make people fall in love with you.” and that’s what he tried to do, to the best of his capabilities. he was always good at compartmentalising himself, hiding pain and terror behind a smile for others benefit. he learned to charm a crowd in his short time in the city, learned how to make an audience laugh with a wink, a grin and a giggle. “the handsome boy next door” was his angle, and it worked. true, he didn’t score well with a seven, but he had won hearts. and hearts meant sponsors. all of which would do jack shit once he was let loose in the arena.
the area was made of a ruined city, rubble, and large buildings with plenty places for people to hide. in books of ancient history, there were tales of a place known as “pahrys”, or something close to that spelling (dami never stuck in at school, he had a factory to start working in at the age of ten). although laying in ruins, it wasn’t something unfamiliar to him-- almost like home. and it played to his advantage, able to weave himself through narrow streets and alleys to dodge careers and wandering stray tributes that thirsted for blood for their own victory.
the games lasted 7 days, a whole week. towards the end, as views began to dwindle, the game makers knew that they had to pull their last card to draw people back in. and armed with a large mace that he had found in his mad dash in and out at the start of the games, dami heard loud explosion after explosion from above. bombs being dropped one by one, sending ruined buildings tumbling down more and more and forcing those that were wise enough back to the cornucopia. he was against the girl from one in the end, down to the final two, and by god was she chomping at the bit to slaughter him. no, i’ve come this far. i’m not giving up. i can’t. i can’t. i can’t. i can’t--
he wasn’t sure when he came back to reality, but when he did, he was standing over the mangled corpse of the girl that had been hungering for his demise, her head nothing more than a pile of bone and gore splattered against the pavement. a final cannon rung out through the air: he’d won. the scream that ripped from his throat was edited out by the game makers. it took him hours to come out of a state of shock, hyperventilating at the brutality that he had not only endured by the brutality he’d inflicted. he was a monster. he’d survived, but he was a monster.
although it happened four years ago, dami’s public image remained the same. the charismatic, broad shouldered boy next door with the friendly smile, with the gentle eyes and the sing-song laugh that could please a crowd. but the second that a camera isn’t on him, the second that he isn’t being shoved in the faces of the people that made him do what he had to do to survive, he finds ways to numb the constant terror that he feels in his heart. loud noises set him on edge, at times enough to send him to the ground clinging to his ears and rocking back and forth. he’s broken, but if he can aid a cause such as the rebellion in whatever little way he can to make sure that others, least of all his brother, have to face the same fate as him? then he will.

Wait, are you a Michael Jackson fan? I just discovered it now, god, I love him so much, but almost everything I see or hear about him in the media upsets me so terribly. All these streams of insults addressed to him in recent years after that "documentary" film, people do not want to understand, they are just glad that they again have a "reason" for bullying. But most of all it upsets me when they say what an amazing father Joe was and that it was thanks to him that Michael became a great singer. Joe was a fucking abuser and a scumbag, and I'll never stop saying that. The general reaction on Twitter to his death, "he was a great man and we are grateful to him," so terribly pissed me off. Loving Michael for me has always been akin to the experience of being in the ATLA fandom: there are too many stupid or hateful people who spoil all the joy of what you love so much.
I sure am! He was truly one of a kind and I've been very happy that everyone is giving me all the excuses to praise him as much as I want.
God, anyone who says Joseph Jackson was good father is either in denial or doesn't know a damn thing about him.
There's a reason Michael literally said that, when he was younger, he felt like throwing up whenver he saw his father. A reason why Michael's brothers were all entitled as fuck, and why their exes always said "Michael was literally the only one who didn't turn out exactly like Joseph" whenever they were trashing these guys.
That reason is: Joseph Jackson physically, verbally, and emotionally abused his children, and he trained every single one of them to see every awful thing he did as not just acceptable, but necessary. He wasn't just as violent, cruel man. He was a manipulative scumbag too.
I get extra mad when people (especially many memebers of the Jackson family) try to excuse it as "Oh, but that was just the way to discipline children back then"
1 - Segregation was once "the norm." In many countries, child brides are "the norm." For many people war is "the norm." "Thing is accepted/part of a whole group's reality" is not the same as "thing is completely fine." What Joseph put his children through was abuse, doesn't matter if they forgave him, if it was the "norm", or if they genuinely (incorrectly) believe they achieved all they achieved because of him instead of inspite of him, it was already wrong back then, it is still wrong now, and it will ALWAYS be wrong.
2 - If you don't know how to discipline a child without hitting them, you're a shit parent. Plain and simple.
Ah, Leaving Neverland. I'm gonna be cliche and make the joke of "The one documentary that doesn't actually document anything." The way people were acting like it brought forth any kind of real evidence against Michael instead of just contradictory statements and drone shots is ridiculous.
I will give Robson and Safechuck props for one thing though: it is one hell of a bold move to base your entire "testimony" on the fake-diary of the alleged original victim (Jordan Chandler), which was actually the pornography novel with the very explicit fantasies of the proud, confessed pedophile Victor Gutierrez, who basically claimed "If anything sexual happened between Michael and this kid, it's because the kid was totally in love and consented, so it was beautiful actually."
I mean, it's bold because it's stupid and immoral on every level, but still, can't say I saw that one coming.
