It wasn't a very romantic way to meet someone. Rather classic case, often seen in movies. You went out with your friends to grab some drinks, then you changed bars, then you went to another, and another, and finally a friend of a friend you didn't even know the name of, introduced you to her. Vic made a great impression on you from the first second you saw her. The way she looked and carried herself, the nonchalant confidence and party spirit. She quickly looked you up and down and decided to get to know you better. Obviously, like in many stories like this, after a few stronger drinks you ended up in her flat. The sex, even though sloppy and drunk, was the best one you had. She was the first woman you felt so confident with. In the morning she offered you some coffee and pancakes which she burned. You thought you'll never see her again, but just a few days later you've got a DM on Instagram. She wanted to meet up and take you to some exhibition.

You quickly met her friends, the rest of the band, her sister. They all seemed to like you, or at least you thought so. One night after a long jamming session, Vic and Thomas decided to take a dip in a pool, leaving you with Ethan and Damiano. The wine was sweet and night air pleasantly refreshing. You felt a gaze on you and you turned your head to the side.

"I'm surprised Vic found someone she can trust so fast." Ethan said in his stoic voice while looking at the stars.

"Fast?" You asked and turned at Damiano, as Ethan seemed to be done with the conversation once he noticed your tone.

"She broke up with her girlfriend maybe three weeks ago, didn't she tell you?" Damiano raised his eyebrow and lit the cigarette.

"No…no she didn't." You mumbled, watching her splashing water at Thomas through a thick cloud of smoke that Damiano blew out.

At that moment you had your first doubts, that she was treating you like a simple rebound, nothing serious. You barely knew each other so you didn't really mind. You liked her, yes. Sex was great. She introduced you to some amazing people. You shouldn't have been worried at the time, but for some reason you felt an unpleasant pinch in your heart.

You tried to ignore the annoying little voice in your head, telling you that Vic isn't treating you seriously. What finally managed to shut it up, was Vic herself.

"Sorry I'm late again. The traffic is a joke in this city." You muttered, dropping your bag on the floor. "Hey," you smiled and wrapped your arms around her, placing a soft kiss on her lips.

"Hi." She whispered and put her hands on your hips to deepen the kiss.

About an hour later, you were both laying in bed naked, still panting and covered in sweat, a white sheet messily thrown over your lower halves.

"Why don't you…why don't you just move in?" Vic said casually. You frowned and looked up at her.

"Are you serious?" You asked and sat up straight.

"Yeah, well you hate the traffic, we spend a lot of time together and…someone could look after this place when I'm away. So, what will you say?"

She ended that sentence with the most gorgeous smile, her whole face was glowing, her eyes were laughing too. You couldn't say no to that creature, even if you tried.

Despite all your friends, and some of hers, telling you that it's a terrible idea, you packed your bags and moved in with her. First two weeks were like a honeymoon. There wasn't a flat or curved surface in the flat on which you haven't fucked. You felt happy, and finally - loved.

But one day she left for a rehearsal and didn't come back on time. She wasn't returning calls, wasn't replying to the messages. Finally, scared for her life, you called Thomas.

"She's not home yet? Fuck…I'll call you back." He sounded tired, but not surprised.

About an hour later he showed up with Vic thrown over his shoulder. She was completely drunk, her makeup was smudged and she was missing a shoe.

"Honestly I'm so sorry, it's…she met someone and was upset. You'll have to get more from her tomorrow. See you." He sent you apologetic smile, it seemed like he knew exactly what happened but was too embarrassed to tell you.

"Where is Thomas…Thomas! Come back!" Vic yelled and covered her mouth.

You dragged her to the bathroom and held her hair for the next two hours, pressing a cold towel to her neck. When she finally was done, she curled up on the floor and started crying.

"Baby? Vic are you ok? Does something hurt?" You spoke softly, trying to soothe her.

"My heart..." she mumbled.

"Baby, do you want me to call for help?" Your hands started trembling.

"They won't fix it, it's broken…" she grabbed a towel and hugged it tight. "I miss her so much…" She whispered before falling asleep.

You felt your rib cage squeezing the air out of your lungs. That's why Thomas felt so sorry. You stroked her hair as she drifted off, letting tears roll down your cheeks.

You never talked about what happened. She was away for a few days a week, touring around Italy. You kept waiting for her, knowing that seeing her will be enough to pay you back for all these lonely nights. But when she was coming home, it wasn't the Vic you knew. At least not in every sense.

"You know, I was thinking…" you started, teasingly kissing her shoulder.

"So you made a workout of the day?" Vic chuckled. "Sorry, what were you thinking about?" She turned to you.

"Maybe we could have dinner out, have some wine, celebrate your return home?"

"Or we could skip dinner, fuck and watch something?"

At the time you thought that she was simply tired and craved some domestic energy. But the sex became dry, mechanic, same moves, same words, same pattern. You felt like it became a chore for her, and it happened only when you initiated it. Once you stopped, your sex life died. You cried in your pillow many times, staring at her gorgeous face, fast asleep next to you. You were trying to figure her out, to find a way to fix it, to find a reason. You've ignored so much for so long, to keep that bit of happiness close. To make it last longer. But she was slipping away, and you knew it was too late to stop it.

1 week ago

"Damiano?" You waited for him to pick up for two hours now. He finally returned the call.

"Yes, I'm here." He said, his voice sounded tired and oddly disappointed.

"Well can you tell me what the fuck i just saw?" you kept scrolling on your laptop, some Instagram account posted a video of Vic in a club with some girl, kissing and getting touchy.

"I…I don't know what to say…"

"Start from not lying to me!" You yelled, the tears and made your phone completely wet, you couldn't stop shaking. "Is she fucking some other people when she's away? Because if there's one girl, there might be others."

Silence.

"Listen, you should talk to her. Please. Just try." He said calmly.

"If you were me, wouldn't you like to know?" You said, your voice cracked at the last syllable.

"She's not the first. I don't know how serious it gets but she's doing it a lot. I'm sorry."

You dropped the phone and pressed a hand to your chest, trying to prevent your heart from shattering. 'She's doing it a lot'. A woman you'd do anything for. The angel that sleeps in your bed. The one you made plans for the future with.

"...are you still there?"

Five days ago

You cried for a few hours straight, waiting for her to call you. She didn't. All she could do after all this time was to send you a long text. She apologized for hurting you. You offered her your forgiveness, you begged her to try again. You were ready to forget about it all, leave your life and travel with her to stay close. You humiliated yourself, exposed your heart and soul, just to get a text back, saying:

'Im sorry but whatever was between us, is not there anymore.I think we should both move on.'

Today

You tried to prepare yourself for that moment but you couldn't. She arrived from the airport around 10 am. You were up all night, you could barely see through your puffy and sore eyes. She looked fresh, unbothered. Vic put the kettle on and sat stood by the window.

"I wish there was some other way." She said and opened the window. The noise of the city was the only sign reminding you that what's happening is real.

"Me too. I really wish it could work, Vic."

She didn't even look at you. The kettle made a bubbling sound. Vic poured herself a cup of dark liquid and sat down by the small table you used to have breakfasts at.

"By the time you finish your coffee, I'll be gone." You said and bit on your lip.

Packing your things took just a minute, most of it was gone already. You waited till the last minute mainly to have a chance to say goodbye. You grabbed a small box and put it in the corridor.

"All done."

You stood there, awkwardly. All you wanted to do was to hold her. This one last time. Kiss her soft lips, feel her warm skin under your fingers. Smell her perfume, even though you knew it's stuck on all your clothes and will make your cry for a few more days. You wanted to tell her that it will be alright, that you can give her some time. That it will pass and that you can be happy again. That you can take the heartache and the sorrow and the unfaithfulness and forget about it. Only if she allows you to stay and try again.

But you didn't move. You grabbed the box and stopped for a second by the door. She was so still. She gave up so fast.

"I wish I wasn't broken. I wish I could love you the way you deserve to be loved."

Her words pierced your heart and reassured you that there is no hope for you two.

"Goodbye, Vic."

You felt the need to leave her building as fast as possible before the tears blind you and your stupid heart makes you go back and embarrass yourself even more. Even though deep down you knew that there was nothing to regret, nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to be embarrassed about the love you had for her.

You got out and took a deep breath, trying your best not to fall apart. But you didn't manage. The second you went outside you heard a heart wrenching wail coming through Vic's kitchen window. And then you understood that her coldness was just a facade to make your departure easier. That deep down she was hurting just as much. That she failed you, and couldn't provide the love she always thought you deserved. That she couldn't forgive herself how she broke your heart.

You sighed heavily and picked up your heavy bags, filled with groceries. Living on the sixth floor in a building without an elevator wasn’t that bad, minus the process of moving in and days like today, when you had to buy half of the local shop. You looked at the stairs with a pout. Oh well, it was your turn.

The door opened without a loud creak, which was surprising but allowed you to get in without Vic noticing. You left the bags in the kitchen and tiptoed to the small living room. Your girl was lying on the sofa, her back against the pillows she picked and loved so much, her naked legs covered with a fluffy blanket. October had barely started yet she was already in a cuddly, cosy mood. You smiled and came a little closer. She was watching some show on Netflix, deeply focused on the plot, twirling a string of her hair on her finger.

“Hey, baby,” you mumbled and placed a soft kiss on her head.

“Hi.” Her voice was raspy, you figured that she probably just got up from her nap. “You’re in a surprisingly good mood.” She squinted her eyes whole staring at your happy face.

“Oh you know, I kinda like coming back home to you.”

Vic sat up and then knelt facing the back of the couch, she slowly licked her lips and grabbed your blazer, pulling you into a deep, slow kiss.

“Mmm, I missed those lips.” She purred and let you go. “Do we want to go out tonight? Maybe dinner and some wine?” She fell back on the pillows, watching you with soft eyes.

“Don’t we have other plans? Ethan, remember?” You asked with a frown.

Vic rolled her eyes and pulled the blanket over her face with a groan. You sat down next to her, gently stroking her leg.

“I reminded you yesterday, what is it?”

“I…I don’t want to go. Please let's just stay home…” she whined and peaked from under the fluffy material.

“Are you feeling ok? Are you tired or…? Why you don’t want to go? It’s Ethan’s birthday.” you cocked your head to the side as if that would help you to understand her better.

“I just…Thomas called. He warned me that you-know-who will be there.”

You sighed and stopped the urge to make a Voldemort-related joke. You knew who she meant. A girl she once had a fling with. They had a big argument afterwards because she started gossiping about Vic. It all happened only weeks before you bumped into her in the bar. Now, this girl was dating one of Ethan’s friends, and it seemed that she was also invited.

“I’m sorry baby… Are you sure she will be there? Will Ethan allow her to come over after everything that happened?”

“Ethan can be a bossy cunt, but he’s not the most assertive when it comes to old friends. I just don’t want to deal with her.” She huffed and pouted.

“Well if you really don’t want to, we can stay. But…it’s Ethan. He loves you Vic and I’m sure he will be sad if you won’t come. We don’t need to stay long.”

“Yeah…I know I shouldn't care but…”

“No, darling, I get it, really. If you don’t want to, it’s fine…”

“No. Let’s go. I can’t ditch Ethan because of some dumb bitch, right?” A faint smile appeared on her face. “Give me a moment to get ready and we can go.”

You smiled at her and leaned down, trapping her between your hands, hovering above her.

“Well in that case…I'll definitely make it up to you once we’re back” you purred, watching a smirk appearing on Vic’s face. You leaned down and kissed her deeply, nibbling on her lip before letting her go.

Ethan hosted the party in a beach house he rented, close to Rome, but with access to the beach. Perfect place for a birthday. The house was beautiful, with a path to the beach lit by torches. Before you rang the doorbell, Vic grabbed your hand and squeezed it nervously. You looked at her and gave her a reassuring smile. She leaned in and kissed you softly. Once Ethan opened the door, he let you in with a wide smile, clearly happy to see you both.

Most people were already there, you exchanged pleasantries with Thomas, Damiano, Leo and some other people you knew there. And then you saw her. She was beautiful in a rather intimidating way. You knew that Vic noticed her because her grip on your arm tightened. The girl sent you a deadly stare and made sure to put up a show and get handsy enough with her new boyfriend so that everyone could see, you smirked seeing her being so insecure. You kissed Vic’s cheek and leaned whispered into her ear.

“Well, I definitely have a better ass than her, good for you for that upgrade.” Vic chuckled and winked at you.

“Not only ass, trust me.”

After a while, you all sat down at the long, wooden table to enjoy some of the fantastic food that Ethan prepared. Vic was by your side, but sadly her ex and the guy tugging along were sitting right across from you. You watched your girl carefully, her clenching jaw, her shaky hands, her nervous ticks of touching her bangs. You gently put your hand on her lap and squeezed it to comfort her a little. She smiled.

“Right, Vic?”

You two were too distracted to notice what was going on. Apparently, Vic’s ex decided to include you in her conversation.

“Right about what?” Vic asked calmly.

“Oh, we were just saying that some people need to make up for lack of talent with controversy.”

“What exactly do you mean by that?” you asked, pinning your eyes in her face, which lit up with a smug smile.

“You know, showing some tits and ass when you lack the talent for example. Humping the air when you make a mistake and ruin a song. This kind of thing,” She blinked a few times and took a sip of wine.

You felt your blood boiling, the audacity of this cunt was almost admirable.

“Well, some of us can’t really show off even that.” Vic snapped, slightly rising her voice.

“True…maybe think if it’s even worth showing them.” The girl pouted and kept watching Vic’s face getting more and more red.

“And what exactly is your hidden talent? It must be buried very, very deep,” You hissed, trying to stop the urge to strangle her.

“Vic could tell you about some of them, right darling? I bet you miss it,” she said, with a complete lack of regard for her boyfriend, who seemed rather amused by this show.

“Happy? Can you shut up now?” Vic muttered, clenching her jaw again.

“Oh, I’m barely getting started. Someone got a little defensive, hmm? maybe you aren’t so confident about your legendary bass skills. That band would be just fine if you decided to leave them”

Vic stood up, the chair loudly scraped the floor. She basically run away from the house towards the beach.

“Better start praying to never see me again.” You spat out to the girl, sipping her wine with a grin.

You run outside, looking for Vic. It was dark, the cool breeze was making you shiver. You finally saw her. She was in her underwear and top, getting deeper into the water which was by her knees now. You lifted your dress and started running toward her, gasping each time a wave was crashing against you, splashing the cold water on your body and face.

“Vic! Vic stop!” you yelled, getting closer to her. She stopped. The water was now reaching your thighs.

“I knew she’s gonna say something, make me cry, I caused a scene and now I look pathetic!” She whined, her cheeks were red, her eyes teary, and some of her mascara was running down her face.

“Baby you know that she said that only to annoy you, right? It’s bullshit, you’re so fucking talented that she’s probably dying from jealousy. She has nothing to offer, and you have it all.” You grabbed her cold hands and pressed them to your lips, pressing a kiss on them.

“Maybe she was right? Maybe people wouldn’t notice if I left? Guys would be just fine…”

“Vic I love you but shut up. It’s not true and you know it. You created this band, you’re a fucking legend and I won’t have you or anyone saying otherwise.”

She looked at you with sad and red eyes. She looked up at the moon and clouds forming. You shivered.

“Please, let’s just go back home. I’m sorry I made you come here. I swear all I want is to end this bitch for what she did. Nobody will mess with you like that, especially someone so insecure and small.”

“It’s not your fault, I agreed to this.”

She shuffled closer. You tried to ignore the cold and the way your body was shaking. You grabbed her beautiful face in your hands and placed a soft kiss on her lips. Vic pressed her forehead to yours and sighed.

“I love you so much…” she whispered, “you’re the only person I trust when you say I’m not terrible. The only person I trust with compliments.” She sighed. “You’re trembling.”

“Well…i’m cold,” you said and smiled, looking into her eyes, just as dark, deep and blue as the sea surrounding you.

“Let’s go then, we don’t want to get sick, do we.” She grabbed your hand and smiled. You looked at her with loving eyes.

“Don’t worry, love. I’ll keep you warm. Always.”
