Note
how did you not know his last name?
genuinely, he's only ever personally referred to as just "ralph" throughout his appearance, even on the welcome board thing that's at their birthday party AND in the news article about it, they just refer to the twins as "Lord Ralph and Lady Victoria"
i'm pretty sure victoria has a surname by the second season?? but i always assumed that she must have just married several times, that's what i want to double-check, but yeah.

Send “ 💖” to get one of my muses randomly picked for a blind date with one of yours!
@manenimittliv
Blind dates.. They certainly are something interesting, especially when set up for you. Her hands probably smoothed out her outfit over ten times now, though that was her excuse to try and get rid of the cold clammy feeling her hands just wouldn't let go of.
Victoria doesn't normally do.. Dates, with how much she jumps around to keep herself purposely busy? Oh good Lord tossing someone into that schedule would be downright awful.. But it's just a one off date, nothing big was going to come from it! Who knows, could just become a simple hangout instead.
Tumblr media
"Ohoho boy.." Another time she ran her hands down the outfit at the table, mumbling her words, just be cool. Nerves are understandable but this is outrageous! Think of it like.. Meeting a new friend, yeah that tends to help with the rare date.

8 Fancy Pocket Knives
Etched pocket knife from Eskilstuna, Sweden
Silver / mother of pearl Victorian fruit knife, England
Damascene Toledo knife, Spain
Inlaid Toledo knife, Germany
Silver-plated fruit knife, USA
Damascene Toledo knife, Spain
Etched pocket knife from Eskilstuna, Sweden
Mother of pearl pocket knife from Eskilstuna, Sweden
@victoriansword [details after the cut]
1) Swedish pocket knife by EKA (Eskilstuna Kniffabriks AB), c. 1980-2000. Model 6 GS (1967-2010), with main blade, bottle opener/screwdriver, pen blade, and nail file. Tang stamp "EKA / SWEDEN" (from 1967), etched handle, 7 cm closed.
These were very popular in the 2nd half of the 20th century as gift knives or advertising knives. They were manufactured by many cutlers in Eskilstuna, and widely exported. The decorative pattern appears, with variations, on Swedish knives from at least the 19th century, and is inspired by Norse / Viking art, which often features twisted serpents/dragons. The interlacing perhaps also borrows from Celtic knots.
2) English fruit knife by Martin Bros & Co, 1848. Silver blade with 4 hallmarks (for Queen Victoria, the year, sterling silver, and Sheffield) and maker's mark, mother of pearl scales, 9.5 cm closed.
This is the posh version of what used to be an incredibly useful tool, a knife (and sometimes a multi-tool knife and fork) for eating on the road. The fancier ones were also status symbols, and very popular gifts – millions of silver fruit knives were manufactured in Britain from the 18th to the 20th century, mostly in Sheffield, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.
3) Spanish Toledo knife, as it's sometimes called, a damascened penknife of recent manufacture. Two pen blades, tang stamp "TOLEDO", 6.7 cm closed.
Not to be confused with Damascus blades! The handle is damascened – decorated with gold inlaid into oxidized steel (see here for details). Reminder that gold is a highly ductile metal (you can stretch it real thin before it breaks), so that impressive aesthetic result comes from a tiny amount of gold. It's a cheap knife, is what I'm saying, for tourists basically.
4) German pocket knife, confusingly also called Toledo, by Hartkopf. With main blade, pen blade and nail file. Brass handle inlaid with oxidised steel. Tang stamp "Hartkopf&Co / Solingen", 8cm closed.
It's "damascened" in the broad sense of inlaying, hence the name "Toledo": it supposedly emulates the Spanish style, and perhaps pretends to be Spanish, but both the metals and the geometric patterns are different. Knives of this type were popular in Germany all through the 20th century as gifts and advertising knives.
5) American fruit knife by William Rogers Mfg, made in Hartford, Connecticut c.1865-1898. Main blade, seedpick [also called nut-pick or nut-picker *snickers*], silver-plated nickel silver, decorated with flowers and apples. Tang stamp: an anchor logo and "Wm ROGERS & SON AA", 8.2 cm closed.
Sometimes fruit knives like this were bought by fruit shops/groceries (relatively fancy ones, presumably) in bulk, and sold or given to customers as gifts.
6) Spanish Toledo penknife (another one). With pen blade and damascened handle, different pattern, probably a bit older. Tang stamp again "TOLEDO", 6.8 cm closed.
7) Swedish pocket knife by Emil Olsson, c. 1920-1950. Blade, pen blade and corkscrew. Tang stamp "EMIL OLSSON / [star logo] / ESKILSTUNA", 9.2 cm closed.
Another etched serpent pattern on the handle, though by now you have to squint to see it. This knife has seen some shit. Until ~1940, pocket knives were widely sold and used in Sweden because they came with corkscrews, and all the bottles had corks, and everyone needed to open bottles. After the war, bottle caps replaced corks for everything except wine, and the pocket knife's utility plummeted, and cutleries started closing. There used to be hundreds, and by now only EKA's left. So statistically, if it's from before ~1950 it saw a lot of use, and if it's after ~1950 it did not, it was a gift or something.
8) Swedish pocket knife by EKA, c.1935-1965. Model 38 PB, with blade, pen blade, flat screwdriver, and corkscrew. Handle with mother of pearl scales and nickel silver bolsters, tang stamp "E.K.A. / ESKILSTUNA / SWEDEN", 8.3 cm closed.
The corkscrew is a quirky one, known as Gottlieb Hammesfahr patent: it pivots on the pin and opens perpendicular to the handle, not pulled downwards as in most pocket knives.

Victoria House is a minimal residence located in rural Victoria, Australia, designed by Pipkorn Kilpatrick. The backdrop for this concrete and sandstone house in rural Victoria was rather stunning, looking out over rolling hills and a winding river. When the studio joined the project, Pickering Design had already completed the architectural shell, but assistance was required to tie the interiors into the surroundings and the existing sandstone stables.

Recs for places to eat or other things that are cool to do in Salem? I’ll be going there soon!
Hello!
We actually rarely eat anything in downtown Salem, so I really don’t have any recs! Most of the time we eat dinner at my in-laws’ or we go to Bill and Bob’s Roast Beef on Bridge Street. The fish place on Pickering Wharf that used to be Victoria Station is pretty good though too but we’ve only been once.
Literally most of our visits revolve around Salem Maritime NHS— the Armory Visitor’s Center has a good gift shop and the Peabody Essex Museum is always worth a visit. Salem has such a rich maritime history that tends to be overshadowed by the Witch Trials. There’s a nice little memorial next to the Charter Street Cemetery behind the Peabody Essex Museum.

The Church was showing a quite new aspect of itself, devouring its own children.
—Carlo Falconi, The Popes in the Twentieth Century
When priests sexually abuse children they violate a trust between spiritual innocence and sacred fatherhood. Specialists in childhood trauma have used the term ‘soul murder’ to describe the profound damage that can ensue when a priest abuses a young member of the faithful. Psychotherapist Richard Sipe, a former priest who specialises in treatment of clerical child-abuse survivors, writes: ‘A person who has been grounded since childhood in one faith, where their self-worth, acceptance, spiritual identity, and salvation were vested, cannot simply forget, put it behind them or join another faith. They can go on with their lives, but the part that is missing cannot be restored. Something is dead; something has been truly killed.’ The spiritual empowerment that might have aided recovery has been profoundly undermined. For children, it is especially difficult to separate the abusing priest from the auspices of the Church, with all its comforting and healing associations.
The consequences of clerical abuse of minors have been emerging in reports of contemplated suicide, attempted suicide, and actual suicide of victims. In Melbourne, Australia, five men who claimed to have been abused while serving as altar boys in the church of the priest Ronald Pickering committed suicide. These deaths, uncovered by lawyer Judy Courtin, add to the forty other suicides in the state of Victoria by victims who had been abused by priests, according to documented police reports. Courtin is conducting investigatory research into clerical sexual abuse for Monash University’s law faculty.
When the original grooming, or sexual attack, occurs in the circumstance of confession, the auspices of the sacrament aggravate the harm. Sexual abuse of children linked to the confessional has not only been widespread, but is known to be especially destructive to the children involved. A priest in England, ordained thirty years ago, and for twenty years a psychotherapist treating clerical sex offenders within his diocese, wrote to me that ‘in all those cases [of clerical abuse of minors], the sacrament of confession was used [by the molester] to discover vulnerability and groom candidates for abuse.’
In March 2010, when the Catholic Church in Germany set up a hotline and invited victims and their families to report instances of clerical abuse in parishes and schools, more than 8,500 people responded. Andreas Zimmermann, the expert responsible for analysing the results, told the German Catholic news agency KNA that the abusing ‘priests had used their moral authority and psychological effect of rites like confession’ to gain power over children, ‘even to the point of telling them that the assaults were an expression of “God’s special love” for them.’
-- John Cornwell, The Dark Box : A Secret History of Confession

do you have any short books recommendations?
You know...I'm not entirely sure how long is considered a short book. Or even what the distinction between novel and novella is (raises eyebrow at a sjm and her 270 page "novella"). I just kinda pick up books and read them, yk? The shorter books I read mainly tend towards middle grade audiences; they're just written that way. But sure, I'll give a few recommendations.
the cassidy blake series by victoria/ve schwab are mg and all around 300 pages, but cw: harry potter love, especially in the first one. how poorly a book from 2018 can age...it is referenced a LOT less in the 3rd book (the one written after jkr started publicly proclaiming her bigotry) but there are plot things...so. I did enjoy them, but it's something to be aware of.
ella minnow pea by mark dunn. Yeah I read it bc of this tumblr post. not my typical fare but I enjoyed it a lot, it's very clever.
childhood me would be very put-out if I didn't mention Gordon Korman bc he was my favorite author as a kid. I'm not a big fan of his newer books but the old stuff is somewhat dated but very funny, mostly middle grade but there are some ya. He has written a lot of books; some good options are the macdonald hall series (boarding school), the nose pickers quartet (aliens), no coins please (children committing crimes), and the toilet paper tigers (little league baseball). Most stuff is like 200ish pages.
Fucked up recommendation but The Children of Húrin by JRRT (edited by Christopher Tolkien). it's like 300 pages and an all-around very bad time for everyone but what can I say? I enjoyed it. There are some other JRRT/Christopher things around the same length that I need to read...
Gail Carson Levine books are mg, around 300 pages and very good fairytales! Also a childhood fav of mine. Ella Enchanted, The Two Princesses of Bamarre, Fairest. She also does have some histfict, Dave at Night and A Ceiling made of Eggshells (the latter of which I have not read).
The Young Night's Dragon Plight by N.T. Lazer. Yeah,, yeah I'm gonna recommend you read a book from an instagram short story author. It's a simple writing style and kind of strange but I enjoyed it.
Frankenstein. Yeah, by Mary Shelley.
Um. Um. I don'tknow what books are. Im,,,sorrey....??? Than kyou for reading if you did

🧨 : An unexpected headcanon for Ralph?
18+ only!! mdni
Tumblr media
Ralph is surprisingly dominant. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a switch to his core; he’s fully capable of and immensely enjoys fulfilling both roles. However, he definitely has a slight - very slight - preference for being in charge, mainly because every other aspect of his life has been almost entirely out of his control. His career will be his father’s choice; he is the only son in the family, so he will naturally take over the family business once his father passes. His entire social circle is full of Victoria’s friends. Indeed, even most of his day-to-day activities are dictated by the elder Pickering-Harmal-Hill twin; go to brunch here at this time, then meet Lottie Whitehead for a game of croquet at this other time, then go shopping for the next party, etc. You’re the only person who ever allows him to be in control of anything, and he takes full advantage of that.
Of course, he’s certainly more of a soft dom, simply because he finds it hard to ever be mean or degrading towards you. However, he will do his very best to rise to the task if you ask him to be a bit rougher with you. He also doesn’t have many rules - or, at least, none that hold up outside of the bedroom. Ralph doesn’t want to treat you the same way everyone else treats him (always ordering him to sit up straighter, to smile less, to be quiet); he just wants to be there for you when you need someone else to take the reins, so he tends to be - what some would consider - incredibly lenient with you. Moreover, Ralph absolutely loathes having to punish you, which makes it all the better that your actions hardly ever warrant punishment. The two of you had always worked quite well together, even before you became a couple, so there are hardly any severe disagreements; there’s even less outright defiance. When there is defiance of any sort, all it usually takes is a stern, disapproving look from either one of you (depending on who is being the defiant one in the present circumstances) or even a gentle but firm reminder to get the disobedient party back on track; you two click so well.
At first, taking charge wasn’t easy for Ralph; he’d spent a lifetime being bossed around, having his creativity and ambition consistently stifled, so he struggled with confidence issues. Although it didn’t take long for him to acclimate to a more authoritative role, within the first four months of your relationship, he’d already become a natural leader. Now, a year into your marriage, it’s as if Ralph’s always been this self-assured, assertive man - both in the bedroom and out of it. Something about being with you gives him the strength to finally tell his sister to back off and the confidence to defy any person who would have him hide who he truly is; an adorable, vibrant man with a heart of gold, a killer fashion sense, and a strong tendency to giggle when he gets excited.

"Triple Execution Is Avoided," The Inland Sentinel (Kamloops). December 26, 1913. Page 1. --- A general feeling of thankfulness will doubtless be occasioned by the news that the triple execution which had been fixed to take place at Kamloops on the 29th inst. will not now he carried into effect, as the sentences imposed on two of the men have been commuted, while an appeal hearing has been ordered in the third case.
It is understood that the representations made by Mr. A. D. MacIntyre of Kamloops before the Minister of Justice at Ottawa respecting two condemned men Jorgenson and Lynn, have resulted in both cases in the commutation of capital punishment to life imprisonment.
Jorgenson, it may be recollected, was convicted of shooting the infant child of his employers under revolting circumstances near Ashcroft. He was represented by Mr. James Murphy at the trial, and on this gentleman's instructions Mr. MacIntyre presented the case for clemency. In submitting the matter to the Minister of Justice, Counsel is understood to have urged the extreme youth of the condemned person (who was not sixteen years old when the crime was committed) and the fact that he was undoubtedly of weak intellect.
The case of Rex vs. Lynn is still fresh in the memory of residents at Kamloops, for the murder of Joseph M. Pickering which resulted in Lynn's sentence, was committed at the Queen's Hotel here.
In presenting this great stress is said to have been laid upon the fact clearly established at the trial that the condemned man had been provok- ed by a most brutal beating admin istered upon him by his victim, and that this was of such severity as to leave Lynn still under its effects and in an abnormal condition 5 or 10 minutes later when the fatal act was committed.
Mr. Justice Murphy Wednesday granted one month to on a reprieve Wed- of Jerry Mulverhill, sentenced to be hanged at Kamloops on December 29, in order that an appeal for a new trial may be made to the Appeal Court sitting at Victoria next month. Mulverhill was convicted of the murder of a man named Kelly at Freeport, on the line of the G.T.P., following a quarrel in a poolroom. He was taken to Kamloops yesterday morning.
The application for a reserved case was made in chambers Wednesday by Mr. A. D. MacIntyre of Kamloops, counsel for Mulverhill, who pressed his application on the ground that new evidence was introduced at the trial without due warning of the same having been given to the defence. This evidence it was asserted had been largely responsible for the, conviction.
Mr. Macintyre declared that the witnesses were all sports from the other side of the line and that though they testified that the fatal shot was fired from outside the pool-room the question as to who fired the shot was not settled. Mulverhill, an Irishman long resident in the States, had received a beating from Kelly in a quarrel previous to the murder, but the evidence brought forward at the trial was such as had not been adduced at either the inquest or the preliminary hearing. On this ground Mr. MacIntyre asked for an adjournment to permit of the preparation of a defense against evidence then brought forward for the first time. This Mr. Justice Murphy refused; and his subsequent stating of a reserved case if of great importance in its bearing upon a legal issue, as it permits an argument before the Court of Appeal on the right of an accused to an adjournment when new evidence is brought forward at his trial.
The result of this appeal will be awaited with great interest.

Why Crane Truck Services in Melbourne are Essential for Your Construction Projects
If you're undertaking any kind of large-scale construction project in Melbourne, having access to reliable and specialized crane truck services is absolutely vital. Crane trucks Services, also known as picker trucks or boom trucks, allow workers to haul, lift, lower and move heavy materials and equipment around a construction site. Using crane trucks saves immense time and effort compared to moving things manually or with standard trucks.
It also improves safety by reducing the manual handling risks associated with construction crews attempting to carry or rig up extremely heavy objects themselves.
This article explores key reasons why utilizing crane truck services should be a crucial part of your planning for construction projects in Melbourne or across Victoria.
Specialized Lifting Capacity and Height Reach
The number one advantage offered by crane trucks is their ability to lift extraordinarily heavy materials to impressive heights. Modern hydraulic boom cranes can lift anywhere from 1 to over 100 tonnes, sufficiently meeting the load requirements of everything from steel beams to pre-fabricated walls and modules.
The lifting boom arms also extend horizontally to 25 meters or higher, enabling materials to be precisely positioned or transferred at height. Tasks like installing upper-floor modules or air conditioning units without crane assistance would be almost impossible.
Adaptability Across All Site Conditions
An excellent crane truck provider in Melbourne will have a fleet featuring both small and large crane trucks, allowing you to match specific models to the needs at hand. Certain crane trucks are suitable for more confined urban sites with limited working room, while larger ones offer greater lifting power for jobs like erecting structural columns.
With the array of attachments like hooks, clamps and personnel work boxes also available, crane trucks can be rapidly set up for highly adaptable use.
Increased Efficiency and Faster Project Timelines
By streamlining vital material handling work, using crane trucks translates directly to saving man hours and decreasing projects timelines. Rather than taking up to several days for crews to manually move and construct elements like staircases or lift shafts using elaborate rigging, a single crane truck can lift these in place within hours.
The productivity enhancements make crane trucks invaluable to meeting construction program milestones. Their maneuverability compared to fixed tower cranes also sees them actively used right through to final fit-outs.
Enhancing Safety and Reducing Manual Handling Injuries
The dangers of crews attempting to lift or assemble heavy and unwieldy sections manually should not be downplayed. Construction has high injury rates, many stemming from excessive manual handling.
Crane trucks eliminate much of the lifting, dragging and straining responsible for back strains, drops and falls. They also minimize the need for workers operating at unsafe heights during installations. Any safety manager must factor in crane trucks to significantly bolster workplace safety for workers on-site.
If you’re yet to benefit from contracting the capabilities of a crane truck provider in Melbourne, you’re missing a key opportunity to make your next construction project faster, safer and more efficient. From leveraging their sheer power right up to accessing hard-to-reach elevations, crane trucks are indispensable on any significant build.
Be sure to work closely with an experienced crane truck company in Melbourne to match the perfect fleet options to your specific construction needs and work programs. Your next project’s timelines, safety and budget could depend on it!
