Oh my god, the Met Gala this year.. There is literally a TV show called The Gilded Age. It’s on HBO. This is not hard. Do your research, people.
Also because I’ve seen so many people get it wrong:
This is the Gilded Age (roughly 1870-1900):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s the time of the rise of the Vanderbilts and the nouveau riche. It’s the American version of the late Victorian Era. Think puffy sleeves and ruffles and bustles and corsets. It’s ostentatious.
This is the Regency Era (roughly 1790s-early 1820s, fashion-wise, the actual period is to do with the Prince of Wales’ regency over his father George III):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The skirts aren’t full. Later in the era, the sleeves and skirts start to add fullness, going into the Romantic Era. It’s to do with the Enlightenment Era’s obsession with Neoclassicism and a response to the French Revolution and the French Nobility. All Jane Austen and Bridgerton is during this Era.
This is the 1920s:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While there was a lot of glamour during the 1920s, the fashion was A LOT different from The Gilded Age. Mostly, the silhouette is much slimmer. The Gilded Age loved an hourglass shape. The 1920s preferred a slim body type.
The 1920s are not apart of the Gilded Age. The Regency is not part of the Gilded Age.

SHINY COLORS FASHION ANALYSIS - L’Antica (アンティーカ)
Tumblr media
"Turn the Rusted Key of Fate"
This is a project analyzing and taking a look at the fashion design and application in the multimedia series, The IDOLM@STER: Shiny Colors. This section is about the gothic themed unit of the series, L'Antica! If you want to jump to a specific section, go here!
(This is a reprint of my thread on Twitter. I put it on Tumblr for easier reading and for archiving purposes. Enjoy!)
-----
INTRODUCTION
Tumblr media
A revolutionary unit of the New World. The flame smoldering in their hearts become a “Song,” their lonely tears become a “Wish.” Clad in gothic dresses, they sing on for hope.
Members (from left to right):
Yuika Mitsumine (三峰結華)
Mamimi Tanaka (田中摩美々)
Kogane Tsukioka (月岡恋鐘) [center/leader]
Sakuya Shirase (白瀬咲耶)
Kiriko Yukoku (幽谷霧子)
---
L’Antica (the Italian feminine form of “antique”) is an elegant & dark vocal unit that specializes in symphonic metal music. Their overall aesthetic & costumes incorporate Gothic and Victorian-era concepts, steampunk, and prominently features of other eras of history.
Tumblr media
In Shiny Colors, all units are represented by a color of the rainbow. L’Antica’s color is a deep purple that mirrors their Gothic aesthetic. It’s a color full of mystery, intrigue, darkness, and emotion which perfectly encapsulates their music and overall concept.
Tumblr media
Rather than their costumes having heavy symbolism like illumination STARS, L’Antica’s costumes are more clearly defined by their style inspirations. As per their name, their costumes are influenced primarily by 18th-20th century Western artistic movements.
Gothic refers to an artistic movement around the mid-late 1700s inspired by 12th-century architecture, a popular setting for Gothic fiction. It combines the supernatural, macabre & dark aura of Gothic literature with innate symbolism standing for psychological or social conflict.
Tumblr media
The Gothic influence can clearly be seen in their costumes, featuring dark color palettes, Gothic lolita elements like ruffled skirts, and mysterious, sublime settings of supernatural or haunting concepts. Their costumes immerse the viewer in different strange worlds every time.
---
The Victorian Era refers to the period of British culture under the reign of Queen Victoria (1830s-1900s), a popular historical aesthetic due to its iconic upper-class fashion & culture. It’s also an era of revivalism, related to movements like Neoclassicism & Rococo Revival.
Tumblr media
Another revival movement that took place is the Gothic Revival, which brought back Gothic architecture and literature into popular culture mixed with values of sentimentalism. As such, Victorian Gothic art has a preoccupation with tragic beauty and symbology for loss and death.
Tumblr media
A handful of L’Antica costumes are very inspired by Victorian-era fashion, culture, and art as well as elements of Gothic Revival; more details will be expanded upon in their individual sections.
---
Tumblr media
The most notable aesthetic that L’Antica takes inspiration from is steampunk, a genre of science fiction that imagines an alternate future with heavy use of steam engine or spring power and maintaining of Victorian-era visuals.
Tumblr media
Other than their main/first unit costumes being heavily steampunk-inspired, it has heavy theming in almost all of their unit costumes; even their logo is a common steampunk element, a key in the shape of a gear.
Perhaps inspired by the Victorian Era being one of revivalism, a handful of L’Antica’s costumes are inspired by other Western/European historical eras. Additionally, eclecticism was a prominent concept during this time, mixing several stylistic influences to make unique designs.
-----
Symphonic Steam (シンフォニックスチーム)
Tumblr media
“Symphonic Steam” is L’Antica’s main unit costume and is the most representative of their concept and aesthetic, featuring heavy Gothic and steampunk motifs. The name references them being a primarily steampunk-themed idol group.
Tumblr media
The animation features the five girls inside and outside of a clocktower. The clocktower shares many features with real life Gothic Revival architecture, including steep roofs, pointed arches, ornate & lacey trims, and overall picturesque design.
Tumblr media
The key points of “Symphonic Steam” are related to its major style inspirations, namely steampunk, Victorian Gothic, and Gothic lolita detailing. As this is their main costume, it greatly encapsulates their main influences and overall dark and esoteric feel of their music.
Tumblr media
As with many idol costumes, “Symphonic Steam” uses the “similar look” concept to make L’Antica look cohesive & thematically the same while bringing out each of the members’ individuality. This graphics shows some key differences between them, revealing a bit of their character.
Just like their costumes, the animation also shows them in different places or doing different action in/on the clocktower to show off their personalities.
Kgane is center of the clocktower (center/leader), Mamimi is lounging inside (lazy, coy), Sakuya is posing outside (serious, model-like), Mitsumine is on top throwing her pocketwatch (smart, eccentric), and Kiriko is caged, riding to the top (fantastical, dream-like).
---
Faith of Treasure (フェイスオブトレジャー)
Tumblr media
“Faith of Treasure” is L’Antica’s second unit costume. Like “Symphonic Steam,” this costume has very heavy steampunk theming. As such, the idols are acting as treasure hunters in an anachronistic Victorian city with steam technology.
Tumblr media
Comparing “Symphonic Steam” to “Faith of Treasure,” both costume sport heavy steampunk theming. However, “Face of Treasure” is much lighter and fun in nature, leaning more science fiction/Victorian, while “Symphonic Steam” is dark and moodier, leaning more Gothic.
Tumblr media
The key points of “Faith of Treasure” are its strong steampunk and Victorian stylistic influence as seen in the graphic. Additionally, the costumes suit their role as treasure hunters with the accessories and accents seen all over their bodies.
Along with the costumes, their animations point to each of the members being in a specialized role in their treasure hunter team.
Tumblr media
Mamimi is a thief, having clothes with easy mobility, a gas mask for protection, and running with a bag. Sakuya is a fancy aeronaut with her sleek dress providing little resistance as she flies through the air. Yuika is a pilot or mechanic with her goggles & tinkerer’s tools.
Kiriko is just a citizen as her design is doesn’t have as many details as the other girls, having bourgeoisie details like her cravat & simple dress. Kogane has a gun & a larger sack; along with the items seen in the beginning with the map, she’s probably the leader.
---
La Rosso Grimm (ラ・ロッソグリム)
Tumblr media
Translating from Italian to “The Red Grimm,” “La Rosso Grim” is L’Antica’s third unit costume. Taking a step away from steampunk, this costume set is heavily based on Grimms’ Fairy Tales and Gothic fiction.
Tumblr media
The setting for “La Rosso Grimm” takes place in a Gothic castle where “five girls are lost,” with the live stage being a replica of the castle and its yard. Gothic castles were a popular setting for Gothic fiction as well as Grimms’ fairy tales due to its mystery & royal nature.
Tumblr media
In fact, all of the animations for these costumes have an opening scene that mimics a fairy-tale passage with the mystery and darkness of Gothic fiction. These passages are also directly based off of Grimms’ fairy tales, like “The Raven,” “Snow White,” and “Cinderella.”
Tumblr media
However, the biggest fairy tale influence that “La Rosso Grimm” uses is “Little Red Riding Hood.” Besides the obvious name allusion (“The Red Grimm”), the costumes have a hood, the setting is a castle in the tangled woods, and the members pose with wolves in their album cover.
Tumblr media
Key points of this costume include steampunk elements as usual (but moreso as accents), a heavier Gothic and punkish influence, and “Little Red Riding Hood” theming in their construction and details.

Neoclassical Architecture
youtube
Neoclassical architecture was a style which evolved during the 18th century as part of the revival of Classical architecture, which thrived in both Europe and the USA. As said by Warbleton council, “Neoclassical architecture grew in parallel to Baroque.” This means that whilst Baroque architects were designing their diverse and complex buildings the Neoclassical architects were working on simpler designs in reaction – which worked as a “correction of the quirkiness characteristics” (Warbleton council) of Baroque.
The Neoclassical style was “perceived as a synonym of returning to purity” according to masterclass.com. This can be interpretated as the return to more simpler design methods as a return to “order and rationality” (Warbleton council) after the era of the Baroque designs and its complexity.
Characteristics:
Grand scales
Simple geometrics
Columns (mainly the Doric and Ionic styles from ancient Greece.)
Blank walls
Neoclassical architects were huge fans of columns, they used them on many different structure types – wealthy homes, halls, etc. The use of columns in designs symbolized great power and wealth - due to their clever structural abilities. Showing wealth and power through their architecture allowed other civilisations to interpret their power without witnessing their capabilities.
The evolved desire of simplicity after the excessive structures of the Baroque style greatly inspired the new design methods – with simpler geometrics forming structures as well as blank, white walls instead of many intricate and illusion pieces of art.
Tumblr media
The British Museum, London.
The British museum in London is a prime example of Neoclassical architecture. According to Khan academy, “the commission was given to Robert Smirke, a well-established Neoclassical architect”. Robert was one of the many architects who originally led the revival of Greek and Classical architecture.
The construction of the museum took around 30 years to finish - the construction finished in 1753. The British museums elevation was originally styled to “mirror the expansion of the British Empire” (Khan academy). This idea follows the idea of using architecture and design as symbols of a civilisations power.

Relics 3 Wedding Venues!
For those MCs with long-standing significant others, the big day is potentially looming now, and the next update will feature your wedding day! It’s a wedding in wartime London and, as a sneak preview of what to expect, here (below the cut) are some notes and images of potential wedding venues you can choose!
Players who opt to have a Christian wedding ceremony will get married in St. Bride’s Church, Fleet Street:.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
St. Bride’s is located in one of the oldest sites of Christian worship in London: there’s been a church on the site since the first century CE! The current building, with its sumptuous interior and distinctive steeple, was designed by the great architect Christopher Wren in 1672. Its location on Fleet Street (the traditional center of the London newspaper industry) means that it has a reputation for being the journalists’ church, and it even has a special chapel where reporters can pray. Local legend claims that its distinctive tiered spire was the inspiration for the original modern-style tiered wedding cake, so it’s a great place to hold a wedding!
Players who opt for a Jewish wedding ceremony will get married at the Bevis Marks Synagogue in Aldgate:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bevis Marks, a Sephardic synagogue constructed by the Congregation of Spanish and Portuguese Jews in 1701, is the oldest continually-operated synagogue in the United Kingdom. Its notable worshippers have included the 18th century boxing champion Daniel Mendoza, the father of the 19th Century Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, and the Victorian businessman and philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore. Its spectacular interior includes seven highly ornate bronze candelabra representing the days of the week, and a Renaissance-style oak Torah ark painted to look like it is made from Italian marble.
Players who opt for a Muslim wedding ceremony will get married at the Fazl Mosque, in the Southfields district of the Borough of Wandsworth:
Tumblr media
The Fazl Mosque, also known as the London Mosque and the Grace Mosque, was completed and opened in 1926. It was the first purpose-built mosque in London. It was designed by the English architect T. H. Mawson, who combined Mughal Indian architecture with elements of Western Neoclassicism to create a very distinctive structure. Its opening was a phenomenon, widely-reported in the press, and attended by a large number of local and international political luminaries.
Players going for a non-religious wedding will have a ceremony in a function room above a restaurant, which is a little less historic and romantic, But they will have Rémy officiating, which should be fun!

The Victorian Era in America
Queen Victoria ruled from 1837 to 1901, being the most powerful woman in the world at this time, Victoria vastly opposed the idea of women's rights that had been spread across Great Britain since the 18th century. The Queen believed that a women's duty was to serve her husband and give children a good education. In the United States, Victoria's beliefs became known as the Cult of True Womanhood, which demanded that women had to adhere to the four tenets of piety, purity, domesticity and submission.
Victorian America, a term that refers to the hugely populated Northeast of America as well as the South, aimed to mirror Victorian styles and beliefs. This time period saw the Second Industrial Revolution and the Women's Suffragette movement. Rising success in business and industry caused a growth in class divide due to increasing wealth. This ended up with an upper class that replicated the manners and morals of Great Britain.
In Victorian America, houses were built using inspiration from a variety of architectural designs such as Gothic, Romanesque, Queen Anne, Second Empire and other styles that became popular in the late Victorian Period. Houses in America at this time were influenced a lot by the ones in Victorian England such as being painted bright colours, mahogany furniture, curtains and wall-to-wall carpet. Houses were big but with smaller rooms that each had a purpose, the American housing pattern was influenced by Victorian architecture.
Religion was a huge part of the culture in Victorian America. Most of the old money went towards funding the Episcopalian Church as well as the Catholic. Places such as New York City were open to different religions, however, others didn't hold the same beliefs.
Technology was on the rise in the Victorian Era in America, steamboats and railroads provided transport to people, this gave people access to different parts of America, which made travelling across the United States quicker and easier. The railroads later on became helpful during the slave abolition and the freedom of slaves.
Victorian art movements like Classicism, Neoclassicism, Romanticism and Impressionism had an impact on American artists. There was also a huge growth in literature and poetry at this time.

What did he paint?
Richard Dadd was a painter during the victorian era. Currently, he is most well known for his depictions of fairies and other supernatural subjects and things that were considered obscure. he also painted things such as orientalism during his early career as an artist. His orientalism paintings were inspired by his expedition alongside sir thomas phillips in 1842, whom he accompanied as a draughtsman. this expedition went through Europe, Greece, turkey, southern syria and egypt. during 1842, paintings of Dadd’s had been found depicting studies and portraits of people from the middle east and their eastern costume, which shows his early interest in middle eastern cultures, and shows his affinity for portraiture and drawing people and faces. Dadd was reportedly frustrated because he never had enough time to finish studies of the magnificent subjects he found. Dadd did not have animals as the subject of his paintings. This trip had influences into his later works, as he branched out into expressing depictions and imitations of eastern culture, aesthetics, and people. He had many works which were orientalist scenes. Looking at his later works of 1845 such as “The flight out of egypt”, where he was inspired by his travels throughout egypt. This piece is brightly coloured with warm hues and has many figures, a common theme in his works to come were scenes with crowded backgrounds, many different figures, types of people and supernatural creatures, and various different hues and colours. “thecollector.com” suggests that this piece was likely a depiction of muslim pilgrims at a meeting point for the annual Majj pilgrimage to mecca. This shows Dadd’s understanding and interest in eastern cultures and how they influences his paintings, and how as a western artist he created scenes for other western viewers to interpret the stories of the middle east and expressing his interest in their culture. These pieces were very different from the popular form of academic painting, neoclassicism and historical artwork which dominated the 18th and 19th century, however the influence of spiritualism and the supernatural and the rise of obscure artwork, the art movement of impressionism and symbolism during the 19th century would help to popularise his works such as “Puck” which established his reputation as a well known painter of the fairy genre. This piece shows a fairy character from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Shakespeare. The painting shows a glowing fairy named Puck, surrounded by many fairies dancing around them, and the work is framed by a circle covered with dark leaves and plants and what seems to be statues inspired by renaissance statues surrounding the framing. This was likely painted with oils. The symbolism and explanation of these elements is unknown, but it shows that Dadd followed the movement of spirituality moving into artwork. The 19th century introduced more movement, freedom and fluidity rather than still life’s and portraits. During the 19th century, Dadd rarely painted scenes of a character standalone, his pieces were always depictions of many subjects concentrated onto one relatively small canvas, again showing that he did not follow the theme of still lifes and regular portraits.
Coming towards the end of the expedition with sir thomas phillips and after the murder of his father and the attempted murder of a passenger, Dadd’s mental state began to decline, and he was believed to suffer with paranoid schizophrenia. In the asylum of Bethlem, he continued to paint with encouragement from the staff. In 1864, Dadd finished the painting known as “The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke”, which is his most well known painting. The painting took almost a decade to complete, and it depicts, told in a poem written by Dadd in an attempt to explain the imagery, Dadd’s late father and multiple other known characters. The Pope, Shakespeare’s Oberon and Titania and multiple other fairy characters from Dadd’s imagination. The painting is 26inches x 21inches, which is a relatively small canvas size compared to the detail achieved in this painting. The painting is said to have this detail as Dadd used the stippling technique. The landscape of the painting shows a lot of nature such as flowers, grass, trees, bushes, acorns, rocks and more. This makes the piece have many earthy tones, and bright colours such as white, red and yellow are used to contrast the tones and draw attention to certain areas and create balance throughout the piece. I would not consider the realism hyper realistic, however the way Dadd adds tone and shape with his shading style really compliments the mood of the piece, and the piece feels more stylised. the attention to detail is very impressive, every corner of the piece feels as if there’s something new to explore and that there’s a story behind each part of the painting. The grass being in front of the characters and in the foreground is a clever way to show the size of the characters and i think it is a great attention to detail. I think that the characters being ones of his own mind, the pope and other popular characters along with his own father whom he killed gives insight into Dadd’s mind at the time of creating the piece, he was mentally ill and spent his days painting, and i believe this piece could have been a projection of his mind during 1855 and 1864. The piece has no official described narrative or meaning said by Dadd, although artists such as Freddie Mercury have been inspired to create their own works based on this artwork with their own interpretations, so i think this piece is a brilliant way to draw people in to Dadd’s work and his legacy, the piece has a completely ambiguous meaning and leaves many people wondering the possibilities of the story.

Nettle Farm Exterior
someone teach me how the fuck to install reshade
Built using @pierisim's Domaine du Clos and Maison Maulière build sets, and @felixandresims's Colonial build set.
Lengthy rambling under the cut about styling choices, architectural history, and inspiration.
For my Decades Challenge I wanted to capture the appearance of a mid-late 19thC British farmhouse such as those I've seen my whole life in the countryside, only grander as I'm a slut for some Neoclassicism. See some examples/inspirations:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Late Victorian brickwork in the South of England is usually red-orange in colour and can be quite intricate, with a focus on symmetry and balance. Contrast stones can be used as lintels, frames, and corner pieces, but for a cheaper build only brick will be used (no need to pay a stonemason, then!) Exposed wood, such as the door, window frames, decorate eaves etc, would be sealed and painted to preserve it against damp weather and boring insects. White is the cheapest choice, but if you wanted to show off you could go for something a little more colourful such as blue, green, or red. Modern occupants like to go for these dusty duck egg blue type colours (see the door on example three), but such pigments weren't typical at the time of construction. Roofing material will depend on the area in which the house is built and the budget of the purchaser, but I wanted to reflect the popularity of slate (also I just really like a good grey-brown roof). One thing that I love on roofs is a proper weather vane, but I had to settle for a decorative roof thingamabob instead. Nothing screams "brick farmhouse" to me like a weather vane on the roof!
For what little of a garden there is I took inspiration from the world of Henford-on-Bagley where this was built, and followed more of a cottage garden look than Victorian - organic, non-structured, and floral. Also I just couldn't not add Wisteria to the house, because I absolutely love the stuff. The scent is just stunning.
The interior of the build isn't yet at a point where I'm happy to share it. Partially because I ran out of simoleans for the family, and partially because the routing in the Sims is so restrictive. I grew up in tiny old cottages where the couch sat in front of the book case, and we dealt with it just fine! >:( Still, I will try and polish it and then post a couple of pictures with more ramblings about the interior decorating fashions of the late Victorian/early Edwardian period.
