you know what’s the worst thing?
the worst thing is when you’re still in love with someone you can’t have anymore; when the only reason you can’t have them is because you put your education before the person that you love and that happened to move you halfway across the country from them. there’s nothing you can do to change it, and you know you don’t regret your decision, yet somehow you wish you could change every aspect of it. you know that both of you are young and shouldn’t be held back by the pains of a long distance relationship with no clear end goal, yet you can’t let go of what you had or thinking that you did something wrong because...you used to take a step back and look at your life and your relationship and oh, how strong it was - how happy you were, you both were.
now you’re at an amazing university, surrounded by great people and learning so much, yet nothing feels real. you smile, but it’s not genuine. you smile to try and convince yourself that you’re happy, but the moment you take a sip of alcohol and let your guard down, you know that you’re not. you try to move on and you make mistakes. so many mistakes. you think that these parties and new people are going to distract you from your emotions and that you’ll realize that you can do better, but somehow, they only reiterate why you loved love him in the first place. it’s almost christmas break and you two have started talking more again and you know you’re going to see him. he’s the only thing on your mind. you wonder why you can’t just move on and why you’re so hung up on him. knowing him, he still cares about you a lot, but he’s over it by now. he’s moved on.
and then you come home and you see him and everything floods back. hits you like a train. the vodka goes down like water; the solo cup is half empty. you don’t want to burden him with your emotions, but you can’t contain yourself. you need to tell him, you need to tell him you’re still in love with him, so you do. and the worst thing is that he doesn’t even push you away. he holds you and plays with your hair like you used to and you swear you could feel him kiss the top of your head. he explains to you why you can’t work out now and why you should move on and how he mostly has. but then he says that you two are still young and that your relationship can easily be reignited in a couple of years. he talks of most likely moving closer to where you are, and how that could give another chance for the both of you. and you want to believe him and trust him, but you know that a promise for the future is only empty. no one knows what will happen in two years. two years ago i never thought i would be in this situation. you want to enjoy the break, but it’s hard because even everything in your own house reminds you of him. all of your favourite places in the city hold memories from the summer - it hurts. you see him every few days because you’re still friends, because you both care enough about each other to not ever want to lose the connection you guys had. but it’s awkward. the silence is deafening sometimes, when you’re trying to figure out how to act in front of each other again, now that you have boundaries. and you know it’s going to take a while until you can really be close again.
and then you see him on new year’s eve and the combination of wine and him are too much. you break down, he holds you again, but he also pushes you away. you ask if he’ll be your new year’s kiss but he says he can’t do that when you’re still in love with him. he doesn’t want to hurt you. he still cares about you more than anything. but then an hour later, you’re kissing and then - the inevitable hookup. but somehow, you don’t regret it. the worst thing is that it actually makes your night better. the worst thing is that you consider being friends with benefits with him, even though you know your heart is too fragile for that. the worst thing is when you find out he’s working on dating another girl, but it’s okay, he reassures you that he doesn’t want to date her seriously, they agreed on just a fling until she goes to university. but the worst thing is that she’s the girl who led him on before he dated you and fell in love with you. she’s the girl who made you feel like a second choice and that you were always insecure of. but you shouldn’t care because you don’t own him and you just want him to be happy.
but the worst thing is that you still care, so much, and you know you always will.
