“i’m so excited for jack black to play bowser!” i’m not. he supports autism speaks.
ever since i found that out, it’s been hard for me to enjoy anything with him in it.
maybe i shouldn’t have a personal vendetta. maybe he doesn’t realize why it’s harmful. but something inside of me, when i found out, just went… “… eugh.” does he see comments of people telling him it’s harmful? does he care? does he believe us when we tell him? so many questions.
but yeah. between crisp rat and jack black… i can’t get excited, no matter how much i want to be.

The Survivalists Overview
Tumblr media
Price: 24.99 reg, 26.99 deluxe, 2.99 DLC Genre: survival simulator Age Rating: 7+
--
My rating: 10/10
Features of the Game
cooking/recipes: yes
crafting: yes
sleeping to jump time: yes
damage jumping off of high ledges: N/A (no ledges to jump off of)
different biomes: yes
pets/creatures: yes (monkeys)
ability to run/move quicker: yes (for use of energy)
energy auto-replenish: yes
energy/health replenish with food: yes
online play: yes
I gave The Survivalists a 10/10 because I literally cannot think of a single thing about the game itself that is frustrating for me. The style may not be for everyone, as it is a blast to the past with over simplistic style, but I adore the art style. The monkeys are absolutely precious.
There are monkeys you are able to adopt by either saving them from captors or giving them items they're craving. They start to follow you around and will protect you or do your crafts for you or gather ingredients you need for you. They will basically do anything you wish for them to do.
The monkeys are my personal favorite feature of the game, but there is honestly so much to love about this game.
There are easy islands you can stick to if you just want to play a casual survival game or there are more difficult islands you can go to in order to challenge yourself if you're like me and like to be challenged in a game. There are biomes with land that will burn or freeze you if you stand on them for too long.
There are all kinds of animals and beings that will attack you, so there is fighting involved, but you can also starve to death if you wait too long to eat.
Survival games have quickly become my favorite genre to play and this game is on my top 3 list for favorite survival games on the Switch. I recommend this game to anyone that loves simple but captivating gameplay.

God of War Ragnarok Reaction
We (my husband plays, I watch and provide obnoxious entertaining commentary, much like Mimir- it is vital to the experience, I assure you) just finished the main story of God of War Ragnarok, and I have FEELINGS.  This is not a review, it’s a reaction.  The former is well reasoned and structured, the latter is screeching in text form.
Read on for screeching, and SPOILER SPOILERS SPOILERS.  This game has an incredible story, please do not spoil yourself!
Tumblr media
So I’m not going to recap the plot or anything like that.
What I want to talk about- what I found so incredibly and powerfully done- are two of the core messages of the game:
Change or die
What is broken cannot be mended
Change or die
Hhhhnnnghhh one of my faaaavorite themes!!!!!  This is, in my opinion, one of those universal truths about life.  Sometimes, it has that sort of...  Natural selection feeling; if you fail to adapt to an ongoing situation, you might face losses, even death.  But usually, the change aspect has to do with accepting/facing when you make mistakes and working to grow beyond them.  “We must be better” becomes the mantra of Kratos and Atreus.
The Jotnar believe that their prophecies reveal immutable fate.  Kratos, who slew the Fates of his homeland, is (understandably) not impressed.  Meanwhile, the Norns reveal that fate does not control anything.  No; instead, people are so resistant to change that predicting their futures is child’s play.
Thus, if Kratos continued to be distant/emotionally unavailable to Atreus, and to control him in the name of protecting him, then Kratos would have died, as the Jotnar prophecy predicted.  If Atreus continued to prize freedom and knowledge of his purpose over everything else, including his strained relationship with his father, then he would have teamed up with Odin, again, as predicted.  And Freya might have spent her whole life in a grief-stricken rage if she didn’t let go long enough to work with Kratos towards a common goal.  They lived because they changed, and because they trusted themselves and each other more than they heeded their nature to protect, to seek, to avenge.
The characters who could not change did not fare so well.  Odin gave his eye, hung himself, and laid waste to every realm and his own family in the pursuit of knowledge, to know what would happen to him so he could prepare for it.  Sindri couldn’t let go of Brok, to the point where he revived him from death at the cost of Brok’s afterlife.  Odin lived like he was dead, obsessed with one thing, unable to care about anything else, not even himself, really.  Sindri still lives like the dead, consumed by the hole inside him.  Brok used his dying breath to ask Sindri to let go; still, he cannot, or will not.  Which leads me to the next bit...
What is broken cannot be mended
THE SINDRI THING WRECKED ME.  Obviously I’m even more sad for Brok- especially with no afterlife- ESPECIALLY after using his last breaths to forgive Sindri for taking away his afterlife, and to ask him to let go and live-  ARE YOU KIDDING.  I AM.  DEVASTATED.
(BTW Sindri vs Brok are an amazing study of nice vs kind.  Sindri is nice, a well mannered guy who speaks fairly gently and is friendly.  Brok is an abrasive ass, but he’s explicitly the kinder of the brothers.  He never hesitates in his generosity and forgives, forgives, forgives, even when his afterlife is the subject.  I adore them both, but yeah.)
But...  Yeah.  Brok will never have his afterlife; that part of his soul is gone.  That cannot be fixed.  Sindri was once family to Kratos and Atreus.  Now, he wants nothing to do with them; they are as dead to him as Brok.  In contrast, Freya continued to engage with Kratos and Atreus, even after they killed her son to protect her, and that conflict?  As long as conflict went on between them, there was a chance for reconciliation, even if that seems counter-intuitive.  If things were truly over, if Freya wanted nothing to do with them, she would have simply... left them alone.
Which seems to be what Sindri is doing.  Ugh, it’s devastating.  Sindri was one of Atreus’ first pals!  Sindri and Brok were family to him, kind of like uncles, and now?  One is dead, and one has renounced them.  But some things, when broken, cannot be mended.
Now, narratively, these plotlines tend to be, you know...  Brought back up again.  So who knows, maybe we’ll see more of Sindri.  Although honestly, I’m guessing that the next game is about Kratos restoring Greece, based on the final prophecy and some post game dialogue.  But for now...  Yeah, for now, things are broken.  They were family.  Were.  The rift, the finality is... devastating.
Likewise with the whale Mimir imprisoned.  Mimir could not undo the wrong he did there.  Years of imprisonment destroyed something in that whale; the chains remain, even when they are cut.  What was broken cannot be undone.
Likewise, Brok is dead, and he will have no afterlife.  Sindri has to deal with that, and he seems to be doing so by curling up in the hole of grief.
Finality is so, so hard to deal with, especially the ultimate finality of death.  But it does serve as a reminder to be careful with each other, and with our choices....  Because some things cannot be undone or mended.
THIS GAME WAS AMAZING!  I LOVED IT SO MUCH!  And I didn’t even scream over the amazing father/son bonding!  AHHHHH!

Hey, just saw your tags on my post and thought you might be interested to know that in Age of Calamity at least, it seems Gorons are indeed considered vai by the Gerudo, for what it's worth:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(though this mission also has some other interesting viable contestants, like Hestu for example.)
Oh neat!!
Since I laid eyes on the trainwreck that is Linkle and Cia I've always considered Hyrule Warriors to be more like a bad botw fanfic and non-canon no matter what, but it's interesting to see what their take on the gorons is!

3. 1-3 games you've played in the past
12 months that you really enjoyed
Big fan of the Sluggish Morss series, and I’ve been slowly replaying that. Just finished 2, its a grand ole time. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX, i mentioned in the previous ask, but I do love it. It’s the same game as the original but with everything updated to be more modern.
5. Game(s) coming out that you're looking forward to
Battle Network Collection!!
Also there are a handful of indie games on steam that haven’t been released yet that I have half an eye on, but I don’t remember all those.
Also tbh, I’m not looking ahead with games a lot, because i have a MASSIVE backlog of games i have but haven’t played.
7. A series you've lost interest in
Ooo, spicy! Hmm… i’ve lost interest in a bunch of games but I don’t think of any of them as series, most of them are stand-alone.
I guess the ones that might count would be series with a specific bad entry that soured anything that came out after that, like Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
I guess the Metroid games kind of count, too? I like them, but there’s almost always one spot in every game that i get hung up on and can’t get past. People said Return Of Samus was hard, so I just didn’t buy it, and I haven’t really thought that much about the series since.
I guess you might be able to count the main series pokemon games too? But tbh, that ship sailed after Platinum, I didn’t like some of the designs for Gen 5 and I wasn’t financially independant at the time, so I just never had it. I only got Y because of peer pressure, and I got Moon because I wanted to try something new, the competetive scene. I built an absolutely kickass team in it, and that was that. Gen 8 didn’t have a national dex, so I didn’t want to relearn an entirely new meta for competetive, so I took my team building to Pokemon Showdown exclusively instead. I’m sure Gen 8 and 9 are absolutely lovely games, but I really don’t… Know what makes them different from the previous main series games in any way. And I honestly don’t care enough to find out. (Fuck ya gigantimax).
15. Do you have a backlog and do you keep track of it? If so, how?
boy, do i. In terms of keeping track of it, I mostly… Don’t. I usually play whatever catches my fancy when I’m in the mood to play games. Then I keep playing that until I either get bored with it or finish it.
26. Realism or stylized?
Stylized, Stylized, Stylized! Get your real-time beard growing away from me, and fuck off with your shrinking horse testicles! I prefer it when a game is visually distinct, striking. I can look at a screenshot and go “Yeah I immediately know what that game feels like” based on the visuals alone. That’s what I want in terms of design. This obsession with realism can get outta here I don’t want it.
