ϟ.  → mads mikkelsen : cis man: he/him: head of the department of mysteries & speakeasy owner: the world is not enough by garbage  ϟ  did you see viggo avery ? you know , 58 year old pureblood who was formerly in slytherin . some say viggo can be quite incisive but are known to be ruthless. they are aligned with  the death eaters .  maybe that’s why they remind me of the eerie feeling that someone’s watching you, the calm before a disastrous storm , strong whisky burning at your throat.   ϟ  penned by vivi : 23 : gmt+3 : she/her
character inspo:: tywin lannister ( game of thrones ), thomas shelby ( peaky blinders ), klaus mikaelson ( tvd ), don draper ( mad men ), silco ( arcane )
born on august 18th to aiden avery and augusta sorensen, viggo was the eldest out of three avery children. while the avery name might have meant something one generation ago, now they were nobodies. aiden, in viggo’s eyes, was too cowardly to respond to the people snickering at him, content with his sad little life, content with spending his last galleon at the pub, getting himself in debt to the local bartender for a bottle of whisky. augusta was a spell inventor, though were creations were deemed to unstable and volatile. unpredictable. just like her. when the ministry forbid her from working, she moved her “business” to knockturn alley. who knows how many shady disappearances augusta had been responsible for.
with a father who’d see the pub more often than his family & a mother who would use one of her new spells on you if you dared to speak back, it was mostly viggo who raised his siblings. he’d cook for them, help them with their studies, teach them how to read, make sure they had everything they needed when his sister’s bracelets and his brother’s jackets kept disappearing and it was clear aiden was out of stuff he could pay his debts with. he’d stand up to his mother so his siblings would be safe; he didn’t mind eating up one or two of those horrendous spells for them.
the last thing viggo remembers about his father was him begging his friends for money. he’d put on his old once fancy suit, brought his whole family to this fancy dinner where purebloods gathered to outlie and outbrag each other and there was aiden, begging. viggo recalls the other men, their smug faces, the way they laughed behind aiden’s back. their fake promises and aiden so pathetically full of hope. he remembers aiden’s anger when finding out it was all fake, it was all a joke with him being the punchline. the outrage, the trashing of the house, portraits of his ancestors torn apart. it was the first time viggo fought his father ; he was grown up now. he could hit too. it was also the last time the averys saw aiden. when viggo returned home for the winter holiday, months later, he found an empty house. augusta came around, eventually - about a week later, as cynical as ever, cigarette attached to her lips. don’t ever question me again or you’ll regret it. by the way, your father died two months ago. what’s for dinner?
viggo was a few years below tom riddle, but naturally found his way into his friend group. a gang of slytherin boys, hogwarts’ biggest nightmare some would say. while viggo would use hogwarts as an escape, a way to let loose, do dumb shit, forget he has to play a parental figure to his siblings for a little while, a part of him couldn’t get loose completely. he still had to get excellent grades; he had to be the best at everything. he needed a job at the ministry. he needed to make it big one day. spite was his greatest motivation and the knights of walpurgis seemed like something that would help him achieve his goals. that, and viggo was indoubtedly loyal to his friends; his second family. his brothers and sisters.
augusta was so kind to find viggo a wife as soon as he graduated hogwarts. she had her connections thanks to her shenanigans in knockturn alley. viggo didn’t find it neccessary to fight back; the girl was noble, pureblooded and he could use the connections her family name could bring him. both of the treated their marriage like a business arrangement.
with a wife and a baby on the way, the knights terrorizing england and most of their missions a success, a job at the ministry as an unspeakable, everything seemed to be going well. or maybe, they were a bunch of dumb kids still. maybe, viggo had underestimated how serious this all was. his siblings, always eager to follow in his footsteps, so eager to fight, got their dark marks as well.. and a mission gone wrong would cost them their lives. just like that, as their big brother, right by their side, can’t do anything to save them. that day, something in viggo broke. it was the first time he’d seen augusta shed a tear, too. it lasted only for a moment, though. this is your fault. you got them into this shit. their blood is on your hands.
for someone who despised his father’s weakness and swore he’d never become like aiden, it turns out viggo was just as bad as a father as him. how do you raise five children with love and affection when you don’t know what it feels like? do you even want to give that to them? the world was harsh, and viggo made sure to prepare them for it. it was fucked up, but perhaps a part of him was jealous. he’d given them protection - his name alone did. they’d grow up with this feeling of safety he never got to feel. and he’d be damned if his life’s work ended up in the hands of the wrong kid; for it to end up like what his father did to his father’s legacy. he would not do aiden’s mistakes and he would not let his children do aiden’s mistakes either.
