Living in a bilingual country means that names for places are often just transliterations between the languages. This is cool, as names you are used to thinking of as just words with no meaning turn out to have really obvious, even quaint etymologies, three simple examples:
Pori – Björneborg ~ Bearcastle
Porvoo – Borgå ~ Castleriver
Helsinki – Helsingfors ~ Narrow rapids
But my favourite is the pair of Lahti and Viikki.
Lahti is literally just "Bay" in Finnish, and the city has a Swedish name, namely Lahtis. So they have just appended an s to make it feel like a Swedish word.
Vik is literally "Bay" in Swedish, and the area also has a Finnish name, Viikki. Once again, the long vowel is just marked and -ki has been appended to make the word feel Finnish.

The capital's new light rail line connecting Itäkeskus in eastern Helsinki to Espoo's Keilaniemi has only just opened, but Helsinki is already gearing up to approve funding for another suburban tramline — this time running between the northeastern suburbs of Viikki and Malmi.
The project has been dubbed Viima, or "Icy Wind."
Helsingin Sanomat said it is intended to serve a new residential area emerging in what used to be Malmi's small-craft airport. A lack of public transport in the area would make life difficult for the 25,000 residents expected to eventually live in this part of the city.
Following the recently approved tram in Vantaa, Viima is the next new streetcar project in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
Chinese cash
Finland is open to Chinese money, reports Hufvudstadsbladet. The Swedish-language daily said that while Chinese firms have made fewer foreign investments since the pandemic, Finland remains interested in business from China and does not restrict the flow of Chinese Yuan into the country.
According to HBL, PM Petteri Orpo (NCP) said on Wednesday that Finland has not reconsidered its position on China or Chinese investments.
News that the Chinese company Svolt said Finland is on its list of countries where it's considering building a new battery cell factory, has drawn positive comments, including from Finland's business lobby EK.
Chinese electric cars are gaining a growing share of the European e-vehicle market, increasing Chinese interest in minerals and battery factories, HBL said.
Baby blanket theft
Tampere-based Aamulehti reports of baby blankets going missing in the city's maternity and post-natal ward.
Sharp-eyed staff have, however, noticed the fox-patterned blankets cropping up on social media. This is interesting because the Finnish manufacturer, Univiso, does not retail directly to consumers.
AL said new moms should keep in mind that the Finnish-made blankets are funded by taxpayers. In any event, extra efforts are not needed to track down the culprits. This is because the manufacturer has microchipped every blanket it sends to institutional clients, like hospitals and daycares.
Could Finland compel civil servicemen to milk cows?
There's been a positive reaction to a recent comment on a Finnish-language Yle article suggesting that civilian servicemen help alleviate some of the serious labour shortages on farms.
Milking cows, though often automated these days, is a twice-a-day routine on dairy farms.
The commenter proposed that young men carrying out civilian service, in lieu of military conscription, could step in as stand-in labour on dairy farms.

Spent my last half day in Helsinki walking through Lammassaari, an area within Viikki-Vanhankaupunginlahti nature reserve (yes I had to copy and paste those words 😂). A few observations:
- I love their 'dry toilets' vs. usual outhouses! The idea of essentially composting your waste right away is a super neat idea (and doesn't smell at all).
- I didn't realize this beforehand, but the area is actually a really popular spot for bird watching - there are even bird towers where people can climb up for a better view. I felt a bit ashamed of my bright pink jacket which no doubt scared the wildlife away 😅. At least this wasn't the Netherlands where someone would have no doubt made a snarky comment, haha.
Oh and my learning from this trip? No buses or trams will stop for you unless you stick your arm straight out in a decisive manner. Little half waves do not work - I learned this the hard way 😆.

YOU ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER
I walked from Tapanila to Viikki for three days in a row. And as this was the snowing season, each of those days was cold or getting colder than the day before. It was snowing and sleeting. I fed the docks in the water stream in Malmi. And I thought about how to become great at what I do! I remember the 21st of November 2022 because I was struggling to find an adequate answer to my question—how…

SOLITI 2022 PART TWO: THE END OF YEAR LISTS
Kerttu Helinä (Soliti/Playground)
The past year has been a bit of a rollercoaster, but a good one in the end. My year was full of action, a lot of work and a lot of fun times as well (and possibly not enough sleep). The best thing about 2022 for me was that it was filled with music – almost everything I’ve done was somehow related to it. Music was a big part of my work and other projects, as well as my free time both out and about and alone at home.
That’s why I wanted to take a look back and list some of my favourite songs this year, both old and new ones. Since live music and club nights were a big part of my year as well, I listed to some of my favourites from there as well.
As a bonus, inspired by working at the Love & Anarchy Film Festival, I added 3 of my favourite movies this year!
3 of the most impressive gigs of 2022 Ursus Factory & Friends 13.7. @ Coolhead Viikki Pretty 21.10. @ Vanha Ylioppilastalo Siivet 11.11. @ Alppila UG
The most memorable DJ sets of 2022 Laura Vartio & Harvest, every summer Sunday @ Paha Vaanii, Siltanen Perttu Kurttila 19.6. @ Paha Vaanii, Koistinen DJ Jaffa @ Sounds Like Kotibileet 10.9. @ 6. Linja
Best 5 songs that came out this year Teini-Pää : Ydintyttö Pesso ft. Pehmoaino : 1000 VIIKKOO Handshaking : Alone in the sushi buffet Protopapa : Ca Va? Je t’aime! Mr. Dad : Hot Summer’s Day (+1 special mention: Sofi Merone : Boys)
Best 5 old songs I rediscovered this year Mariah Carey : Fantasy Gala : Freed From Desire Labi Siffre : I Got The… Dido : Here With Me Soul II Soul : Back To Life

July Update: Making Headway!
We’ve been working full-time on our iGEM project for almost a month now, and have recently taken our first steps in the wet lab.
On this note, we have begun transforming our E.Coli to carry a GFP gene. We are now expanding the colony and extracted and purified the protein to use it later in our DARPin selection. The first DARPin that we will affinity select will be targeted against GFP, so that we can try out the principle of ribosome display, which is the method that we will be utilising for the affinity selection of DARPins. Relating to wetlab work, we have completed the necessary Safety Form for iGEM, in which we detailed the measures we will take to ensure minimum risks during our experiments. On 22nd June, several members of the wetlab team gathered at the Biocentre, Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki to better understand the protocol for ribosome display
Aside from this, we’ve made great progress on the collaboration front. We have connected with TU Dresden, who are also focusing on chronic wound healing and who are set to be our main research partner team. We intend to join forces on the dry lab side of our projects, working together on the computational modelling of how DARPins pass through the biofilm matrix. This will provide an extension to our original goal of modelling the DARPin-AIP docking. Also, as TU Dresden aims to heal chronic wounds through phage and growth factor application, it could be a promising therapy in combination with our more preventive solution. For example, AIPs are first blocked by our DARPins, allowing more effective treatment with phages and growth factors down the line. If time allows, we hope to work together on a suitable biomaterial for applying both our DARPins and Dresden’s molecules to the wound site.
Next, we have furthered our human practices. We published the first episode of our podcast for Season 2, contributed to the Patras, Greece team’s synbio children’s comic, and will work together with the Turku and Latvia teams on the bioethics of GMO. Importantly, we had a great meeting with Esko Kankuri, a regenerative medicine researcher from the University of Helsinki, and four clinical staff members from the Wound Centre at Helsinki University Hospital: Dr. Heli Lagus, Dr. Milla Kallio, and nurses Minna Hellgren and Maria Honkala. We took the opportunity to ask about the day-to-day experience of treating wounds and the biggest challenges in identifying a diagnosis and the correct line of treatment to take. During this discussion, we found out that most wound patients have multiple disease aetiologies - such as diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and other causes of poor circulation - that all accumulate to chronify a wound. This makes it tough to treat each cause in unison, requiring combined treatment both at the hospital and at home by the patients. We also learned that patient motivation to self-treat can be low, and therefore any solution that simplifies the process is welcomed. We were glad to know that the clinical staff found our project promising for reducing these problems.
Finally, we have made headway in terms of fundraising as well as upcoming meetups and presentation sessions. We have submitted a detailed application to receive the iGEM Impact Grant and are building our poster for the European iGEM meeting in Hamburg, Germany, between 1st and 3rd July. Additionally, we have booked our transportation to Linköping, Sweden for the Nordic Conference in early August. We look forward to meeting other teams, learning about many different iGEM projects this year, and getting further with our own labwork.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Olemme transformoineet E. Colin kantamaan GFP geeniä.
Suunnittelimme yhdistävämme voimamme etenkin projektiemme kuivan labran (“dry lab”) puolella mallintaen tietokoneella DARPinien kulkua biofilmin matriksin läpi.
