Rereading villain initialization and it all goes back to this. Past Ye Mizu did the "right" thing because that was what the rules told him to do. Current Ye Mizu does the right thing out of his own free will.

where do you read villinit :0?
Officially, you can read Villain Initialization (The Reversal) on Bilibili or INKR comics. Or at least, you USED to be able to, but now it is nowhere to be found through official channels (in English at least).
There is someone who is currently doing a pretty good fan translation on Mangago.
Somewhat Important Notes:
Before you start, be aware that the translation quality of the first handful of chapters is...not too great. It improves fairly quickly, but it can make the initial setup hard to follow. Anyone's free to DM me if you're confused about what something means, I'll do literally anything to get more people to read this series. Though if you're an MTL warrior it should be no issue for you lol
Keep in mind that Panlos/Pan Luo/Panluosi/etc are all supposed to be the same name. It's a mis-transliteration of what is supposed to be "Penrose" which comes from the Penrose father and son duo who are both reknowned mathematicians (amongst other things) and the conceptors of the Penrose triangle (aka the impossible triangle) which is a recurring symbol in the series.
Ye Mu/Ye Muxue/Ye Zimu are also the same person. I'm like 99.9% sure this is a nickname and moniker thing, not a mis-transliteration like the Penrose situation.
Prepare for one of the most messed up friendships you have EVER seen (/positive).
Oh, and the Agonies (/also positive). <3

The one single panel of Ling Chen with white hair implying that his hair turned white from the extreme stress of living and he dyed it blond.

What stuck with me from reading Villain initialization is how well it shows this bitter feeling of seeing your parents change.
As a middle child I've been both at the end of "our father is way too latiennt with you, he used to be so much strict" And also seeing said father change and grow and treat my younger sibling better than he treated me. And I've seen it in others. This regret and anger and "why not me? Why you want to become a father now and not 10 years ago?"
And I can see it when older Ye Mu is in our timeline. How he tries to push his younger version to abide by their father standards. And how bittersweet it is to see someone younger finally getting that validation you've been denied your whole life. "Why not me?" And being tasked with carrying a loving message from their father to a younger version of himself? He finally heard what he wished to hear. But also he didn't because it wasn't for him.
And there's more, there's this "my father needed to hear from someone outside of our family that he was harming me to finally notice. Even after I begged and pleaded it wasn't enough for him to care.." which the older Ye Mu doesn't know. No, this one is a thing that the younger version of him will carry. Just like older siblings can just brush away the pain of those who get the 'better version' of their parents.
Or how when their father is absent the older Ye Mu tries to install the same rules he had been tough. Without any thought about their sense if reason he followed them. This sunk cost fallacy that haunts the whole story is also right here "I've suffered so much because of those rules so they have to make sense. And you also have to suffer for them to make sense."
The older Ye Mu blames his younger self for wanting Ling Chen to stay, for not being a "real hero". But it feels so much like a child screaming "why not me?" Not seeing how much the other has sacrificed to get where they are. Just like my siblings don't or how I won't know how much my younger sister does
And all we can do is let them enjoy this slightly less shitty version of our parents. Because it's not their fault and they have suffered their own wounds. Maybe after seeing their mothers message Ye Mu will try to see his younger self as a brother that can use help and guidance. Instead of just someone who got love instead of him

That's my main fic, more like a rewriting of the webcomic but with some ABO spice hehe

i finally finished villain initialization!! and i'm so glad i went back to it, because it really is such an interesting story with fun characters. i'm so glad there was no endgame romance, even though i loved ye zimu & ling chen's relationship and i loved ling chen & jiang xiao's relationship. it was just so much better that they emphasized the familial/platonic bond between these characters rather than anything romantic.

[ villain initialization ]
it's a story of a hero who became a villain and a villain who became a hero
ye zimu (the older one) became a hero not because he wanted to but because he had no choice and finally as he began to make his own decisions he saw how everyone who had betrayed him in the past now cared about his another version
his father who never showed him love now takes care of his another version
his best friend who was actually his worst enemy and secretly hated him for so many years now trusts his another version and helps him with enemies
his boss who sent his to kill villains at the very young age now says that children are not made for war
everyone he loved never loved him back and he doesn't even know what's the difference is between him and his another version that he gets all the love

the young ver: without him I wouldn’t have become what I am now
the older ver: so do i
and here’s my favorite episode where two heroes met and they both were the same person but from different universes and the “older” ver lived in a world where all his friends died, where his best friend became his enemy, where he couldn't get out of his father's shadow
and the “younger” ver lives in a world where his enemy has become his best friend, where he doesn’t have to fight alone, where he was able to step out of his father's shadow. and the way how their “real” is so different although they are the same person
the older ver doesn’t want to accept the fact that their past, present and future depend only on one person.
the person that hated him in his life
and the person that loves his younger ver in this life.
i LOVE villain initialization
