-Nicknames: “Cal”, “Cali”, “The worst person I have ever met” (this one’s Texas specific)

- Pansexual, very out and proud and loud about it. Hence the shirt!

- Nonbinary, specifically agender. They/them. But they mostly still present femininely, as that’s their body type and it makes them feel hot

- Celebrates their birthday on June14th, when they declared independence from Mexico

- 6′ 7″

- Power; Can turn anything, including themself, into gold and back. They have learned to do so very very quickly when they catch fire (which is fairly often). If in a fight, they’ll turn their fists to gold to hit harder

- HATES Texas. Texas hates them right back. They might kill each other if left alone for too long. The two of them can also bring state meetings to a grinding halt just to yell at each other.

- One of the “Big Four”. The four states with the most electoral power: California, Texas, New York, and Florida (in that order). They, along with the other three, are given much more responsibility and are tasked with running state meetings and such.

- Cal and New York often team up to argue again Texas, and maybe Florida if he’s feeling red

- Biggest and hardest leftist in the family. Slightly to the left of Marx himself. They’re rivaled only by Vermont in terms of leftism

- Was among the first LGBT+ states to come out, right after Massachusetts and New York.

- VERY proud that they were their own country. It’s like, the only thing they can actually relate to Texas about.

- Close to Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. In that order. The four of them make up the pacific states.

- They and Nevada are especially close, and Nevada absolutely adores them

- Physical embodiment of “DO IT FOR THE VINE *seriously injures themself*”

- Lives in LA

- Has it in their head that there’s a “West Coast vs East Coast” rivalry. And often schemes to prove their superiority. - They often drag the other pacific states along with this - They truly do not realize that it’s a one sided rivalry because the east coast states are too busy hating each other

- Excellent at any sport that involves standing on a board. Surfing, skateboarding, longboarding, snowboarding, stuff like that. In fact, they occasionally enter competitions and win. They can even go head to head with winter sports heavy states like Colorado and New Hampshire - In fact, they’re SUPER into fitness and being in shape. They do crossfit and they are SUPER annoying about it.

- Vegan, and thinks everyone else should be as well. This is a MAJOR point of contention between them and rural states like Montana, who hunt

- Can’t drive. At all. They THINK they can but they are actually one of the worst drivers in the family. Beaten out only by Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts

- Social activist. They are constantly trying to lead the nation in social change, but they’re usually beaten to the punch by the east coast

- Gets along great with New York. They often visit each other, and sometimes party together

- SUPER cocky and confident. They can actually be seen as vain. Some states theorize it’s to mask deep insecurity, but that’s not entirely true. California just knows their worth and value, and isn’t afraid to show it to the world

- Did not fight in the civil war. One of the few union states who didn’t. - As such, they never quite held the same grudge against the former confederate states as the rest of the union. Surprisingly, they were the first to extend forgiveness to the former confederate states - including Texas

- During the gold rush, they discovered their power when they personally tried to go mining and a mine collapsed on them. They did find gold, and are still very wealthy as a result

- Bit of a theater nerd. They are a very good actor, and enjoy playing roles in movies. They can’t actually be an actor all that often, though

- Has a MASSIVE instagram following. But it’s mostly just ~aesthetique~ photos and shit like avocado toast.

- Does get seriously hurt during earthquakes. The 1906 earthquake actually put them in a coma for a few days

- While English is their official language, their native language is actually Spanish. They speak both fluently, and have absolutely no problem switching. Of the states. they actually speak the most languages. (This is based on demographics). - In order from most to least proficient: - Mandarin - Tagalog and Filipino - Vietnamese - Persian - Armenian - Arabic - Hindi - Russian - Punjabi - Japanese - French, but a different dialect from Louisiana, or Northern New England

- They are very good at singing and love singing. Weirdly enough even though they love to sing and act, they don’t like being in plays and especially not in musicals

- California is agnostic, and they have better things to worry about. Is there a god? Cali sure as fuck doesn’t know - However, in a rare moment of kindness between them and Texas, they once asked Texas to show them how to pray.

- Election season is a fucking shitshow with them. California themself is often pushing for the most left candidate they can find, but the internal politics are a bit of a circus fire.

- California is fully aware that the western half of America fucking hates them. They try not to care. - Emphasis on try. It does get to them sometimes.

- California is also very close to Hawaii, and invites Hawaii to visit them often. When they’re together, they speak Tagalog over English.

- Of the three nonbinary states, California is the most likely to be misgendered. But they will correct you. Every single time.

- Like most states, they have a substance problem. On top of being an alcoholic, they are also in just a bit too deep with “party” drugs like molly and cocaine. - They’ve gone to rehab before, but they always end up back in the same spot. Since it isn’t anything they consider “hard”, they just pretend like they don’t have a problem. - Nevada, one of the other “partying” states, completely and totally enables this. They often go on epic benders together, trying to outmatch each other.

- Flirty! Loves to bed people. They have a pretty high body count. They also have a “fun” habit of sleeping with their government officials - America GREATLY disapproves of this, whenever he finds out. This makes him a hypocrite and no I will not elaborate.

- Under all the partying golden sunny stuff, there is a seriously dark streak. Cal does not shy away from violence, and will even jump at the chance. They and Texas have a very long history of getting a bit too violent with each other. - And they both fight dirty af with each other. Texas will draw his gun and Cali will go for low blows.

- Has two tattoos, a standard issue tramp stamp and a cute little bear on the back of their right shoulder

I know being addicted to social media is bad but I think twitter and vine and tumblr have given us a new perspective on understanding one another. Before, did humans really have a way of knowing if other people did the same things they did? Like when someone else posts something along the lines of “did anyone else ____ when they were younger” or “when ______ happens” and they post a meme or a vine that 50,000 people share i think it makes us all connected in a way we all shared similar upbringings and experience the same things in daily life. Of course we know we’re not alone in our emotions through books and movies and music, but vine and social media is a more personal level. Especially because we see news as it happens and all react together instead of reading a newspaper. The things people feel inclined to share can sometimes be too much, but says a lot about them. friends I have on Facebook write about their dad who left them like 20 years ago ... no I didn’t need to know that necessarily but maybe someone else could relate. I don’t know if Instagram has a place in this bc people on Instagram aim to please...but Idk I think being able to share on social media is a huge plus. We connect to eachother a lot more. Vine ultimately, in my opinion was superior at doing this. Basically, the message here is...R.I.P vine. We saw raw human nature at its peak in a short 6 seconds. Amazing.

A Vine Reunion? Video Apps Clash and Byte Join Forces Clash, a short-form video app that became available in August, announced today that it had purchased Byte, another short-form video app, released a year ago. In a way, the acquisition is a reunion for Vine, the beloved six-second-video app that announced its shutdown in 2016. Dom Hofmann, the creator of Byte, was a founder of Vine; Brendon McNerney, a founder of Clash, is a former Vine star. “This is a more an I.P. acquisition where we’re going to be taking over the community,” Mr. McNerney said. “In a few short months, we’re going to release Byte and Clash together as one product with monetization tools live for creators. The most important thing for us is to make sure both communities on both apps remain largely unchanged.” Mr. Hofmann will take on an advisory role with Clash. When word leaked in 2017 that Mr. Hofmann was working on a new short-form video app, it was heralded as “Vine 2.0.” TikTok hadn’t yet arrived in the U.S., and there was clear hunger for bite-size entertainment. In January 2020, Byte was released. The platform was a near clone of Vine: Users could upload short, looping videos to an audience of followers. Unlike Vine, certain metrics, like follower counts, were hidden. “Today we’re bringing back 6-second looping videos and a new community for people who love them,” the app announced on its launch day. The company also promised monetization for its creators, something that Vine had never quite cracked. But by the time it arrived, the short-form video market had evolved. TikTok had become dominant, and its recommendation algorithm was far superior at serving content to users than Byte’s follower model. Still, when news of a potential TikTok ban swirled last summer, Byte was able to cleave off some of TikTok’s user base. Downloads caused the app to rise to the top of the App Store, if only briefly. In the months since, Byte has struggled to retain that interest. Mr. McNerney built Clash with the intention of focusing on monetization. Neither Byte nor Vine before it had ever been great at helping users make money. “There’s no simple, productized way for creators who make video content to make money on a platform consistently,” Mr. McNerney said. “There’s no easy way outside of putting your Venmo in your bio or asking for money on an Instagram Live.” Clash allows fans to tip influencers and pay them monthly subscription fees. Users can also monetize individual pieces of content. “If a person is busking on the corner in Silver Lake, someone can walk by and drop a dollar in their guitar case,” Mr. McNerney said. “In this case the video is the guitar case and someone can throw a dollar to that video.” When the opportunity arose to purchase Byte in December, Mr. McNerney jumped. It felt to him like getting the Vine family back together again. “We could not be more excited to have Byte join the Clash family,” Mr. Hofmann said in an emailed statement. “Together, we will be able to put more power into the hands of creators so they’re able to focus on what they love without spending as much time worrying about how they’re going to make a living.” Karyn Spencer, who helped spearhead creator monetization efforts at Vine, is also an adviser to Clash. Clash is not the only platform seeking to help influencers make money off their followings. Spurred by Patreon’s billion-dollar valuation and the rise of TikTok, the influencer economy has finally caught the eye of Silicon Valley investors. In October, Stir, an online platform that helps creators monetize and run their businesses, raised $4 million from big names in the social space including Jack Conte, the chief executive of Patreon, Chad Hurley, a co-founder of YouTube, and Casey Neistat, the YouTuber. Clash, too, is taking on a new round of investment led by Seven Seven Six, the new investment fund of Alexis Ohanian, the Reddit co-founder, with additional funding from M13 Ventures and Plug and Play. “If you’ve been watching the creator space a while you’ve seen this growing steadily for years but then it rocketed forward,” Mr. Ohanian said. “There’s a lot of tools that need to be built, and I think this is the platform to do it. Trumps numbers... approval rating, and polling numbers in all the states that could possibly matter this November... are so bad right now that Trump has threatened media outlets, including FOX News, for posting the latest numbers, which he says are all fake.

He’s also been ranting on Twitter about how the upcoming election is going to be rigged, and doing speeches, such as on July 3rd at Mount Rushmore, in which he’s ranting about how liberals and Democrats are enemies of the state, including teachers, and the media, and that they’re all conspiring to end America and bring forth a scary dictatorship where conservatives will be persecuted and punished.

His little pal, Tucker Carlson, over on Fox... is running with that ball and helping to plant the seeds in the dysfunctional brains of his audience, that if Trump loses, it will be because the election has been rigged by a vast liberal conspiracy.

Well... if by, rigged, they mean... influenced by a level of Presidential incompetence so astronomical that nobody in the country can’t see and feel it quite painfully... and if by, conspiracy, they mean... a vast majority of voters have agreed to use their voting powers to vote him out of office... then, sure!

But what this all says... the warlike paranoid rhetoric against not just all races (it used to be just Muslims and South Americans) but all US citizens who would dare to oppose Trump... coupled with the cries of a rigged election to come...

...is that he know’s he’s going to lose.

And they know... he’s going to lose (his junta).

So, the best plan they can think of at the moment is to try and foment violence if he loses... in an attempt to intimidate the rest of us into backing down.

Don’t you vote him out, or we will unleash our army of brainwashed morons to take to the streets with guns and torches blazing. We will throw the biggest tantrum the world has ever seen.

But, after everything else we’ve been through so far... we’re not simply desensitized to the threat of more upheaval... in the case of this threat, we’re like, bring it on!

People are already in the streets standing up to walls of fascist cops in riot gear every night. You think anybody’s scared by the idea of a bunch of red hat idiots coming out of the woodwork with their shotguns and assault rifles? We have shotguns and assault rifles too!

This is America... everybody has a gun!

We don’t use them on the cops, but if Backwoods Bob, or KKKarl wants to show up in attack mode, because they’re pissed off about the outcome of the election... shooting their asses in self defense is justifiable homicide, so let’s go!

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon have already shown conclusively, in the past month, that they have zero loyalty to Trump.

BLM has brought together a huge coalition of not just white and black people, protesting and fighting side by side, but also Native Americans, Arab Americans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Asian Americans, Jews, Amish, Wiccans and other Pagans, atheists, scientists, gay, straight, lesbian, trans, even some Christians, and yes, a not trivial number of Republicans.

Gen X was always there for the fight, along with a few Boomers, and a few Silents, but now Millennials are finally on board, as is... everybody’s celebrated new heroes... Gen Z!

Which brings me back to Tik Tok...

Tik Tok has been instrumental in bringing the above mentioned coalition together... though it took SARS CoV2 to be the catalyst that mobilized us against racism, fascism, and Trumpism, here in 2020.

As social media platforms go, Tik Tok has outmatched all of its predecessors... who were all, in their own ways, very impressive... from MySpace, to YouTube, to Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter and Vine.

It has old roots, being a merger between Musical.ly which has been around since 2014, and what began as Douyin back in 2016. 2018 was the year that what we now know as Tik Tok, was born, and quickly rose to the top of the app charts.

It inherited a huge user base of teenagers, but also filled the gap left behind by Vine, which died in 2016, and Tumblr, which was dealt a critical blow in late 2017, when it was sanitized of all explicit material.

Ignored completely by the mainstream, Tik Tok was also blown off fairly aggressively by established YouTubers as a platform of vacuous content, of no interest to anybody above the age of 15, other than pedophiles.

But when Covid19 hit the world stage in early 2020, forcing everybody on the planet to shelter at home, and grapple with boredom... Tik Tok went mainstream in a big way.

It was the only social media app left, where it was acceptable not to wallow in depression and political defeatism (Twitter), not to be out shopping, globe trotting, or partying (Instagram) and not to be making long form videos in a professional studio with 100K subscribers and a Patreon (YouTube).

This is when most of the millenials, GenXers, Boomers, and even Silents began to get on board... to have a go at finding their own niche in the Tik Tok universe.

And this brings us to the key to Tik Tok’s popularity... its algorithm.

Well, its algorithm, coupled with an elegantly simple interface, and perfect upper time limit for videos... just over a minute.

It takes only ten minutes, scrolling through Tik Tok videos, liking the ones you like, for that algorithm to start visibly tailoring your feed to what you want more of. And over the course of just a day or two... doing this, and following whoever you’d like to see more of, even when they aren’t going viral on the For You page... you can quickly cultivate an addictive feed that you’re happy to scroll through for hours.

Some say it’s just a sinister ploy to keep you on the app, in order to steal your data but... all social media apps do that. Tik Tok simply does it better. It’s algorithm is superior to Twitter, Facebook or even YouTube, allowing you to tailor your feed on the fly in real time... if times are changing that fast... which they have been.

So, why the long love letter to Tik Tok now?

Well, this week, it’s suddenly in peril. It’s been banned in India, could soon be banned in America.. and after losing those two massive markets... could just die.

It began with China passing a law last week that, for national security reasons, it needed to have access to all app data collected by all apps based in China... which includes Tik Tok, which is owned by a Chinese company known as ByteDance, headquartered in Hong Kong... the province which has been in a struggle to maintain what little autonomy it has left from the Chinese mainland for several years now.

India... which was recently embroiled with a border dispute with China that resulted in a military skirmish, immediately banned Tik Tok, for fear of their citizens data falling into the hands of Xi Peng.

But Tik Tok has an American CEO, who, in a move to save the app from getting banned in America, announced that the Hong Kong headquarters would be moving overseas.

That didn’t do much to calm the Trump administration, however... who have only just pieced together that Tik Tok was truly behind the disastrously low attendance of his recent Tulsa rally... and also a key social media channel for BLM and other anti-Trump movements to organize and coordinate (and one they can’t penetrate and manipulate, as they did with Facebook and Twitter four years ago).

So now, both Trump and his Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo have gone on record saying they’d like to ban Tik Tok in the United States.

It’s not clear yet if this ban will actually happen, though it seems likely.

It’s even less clear how a ban in both India and the US will affect the fortunes of Tik Tok.

VPNs will make it possible for users in both countries to continue using Tik Tok, so... over the short term, it will remain accessible... at least to those hardcore devotees who have come to rely on it.

But, barring a massive sea change in the general popularity of VPNs... which is not out of the question, in these increasingly authoritarian times around the planet... the loss of most of the two biggest markets could cripple Tik Tok.

People say, What about supply and demand?

Well... the most likely fate would be for Tik Tok to be bought out by a non-communist company, say a US company like Google, or Amazon.

That’s been the trend for over a decade now. Yahoo bought Tumblr. Twitter bought Vine. Facebook bought Instagram, etc. But more often than not, in these cases, when the hugely popular platform gets bought for billions by the big corporation... the big corporation drops the ball and drives it into the ground.

YouTube being bought by Google is probably the least dismal of these examples, but YouTube is nothing like what it was back in the early twenty teens, when it was a platform for anybody with a web cam in their bed room to talk to the world, and get famous.

But then again, this IS 2020...

Tik Tok has redefined the entire dynamic of social media, at the same time that SARS CoV2 has drastically altered the global economy... meaning that the twenty-teens model of both things, and how they work together... could well be out the window by now.

And this brings us, in tonight’s final analysis, to a fundamental truth that Trump, for all his diabolical plotting to game the 2016 campaign process... has failed to plan for.

Times change.

Twitter was the shit back in 2016, wasn’t it? What a brilliant move for a dark horse boomer candidate turned President to troll the shit out of it every goddam day for years on end, right?

Well, he’s killed Twitter now. The whole universe, as it was in 2016, has disintegrated... in no small part thanks to Trump’s abuses, neglect, and incompetence.

But also just the march of history... climate change, global pandemic, technological breakthroughs, economic upheaval, civic unrest, etc.

They like to say those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it.

I say... those who ignore the future, get eaten by it.

So I just turned in the post-Argus quest to Tyrande and Malfurion

And Jesus Christ it really draws into focus so much of what was wrong with Illidan’s whole Legion arc, and how other characters reacted to it, and how we the players were intended to respond to it. Like, to start, if you were to excise Illidan’s entire pre-Legion character history, everything he does and says would be a lot more digestible, and (more importantly) make a lot more sense. But as it stands the years of lore for the character preceding this single expansion make his arc in Legion essentially an entirely different Illidan altogether, so much so you could literally transpose it on to another character and it would actually make a lot more sense and be a lot more enjoyable. Illidan’s behavior and expressed motivations would work a lot better on a blank slate, or on another character (plot twist: make Maeiv Illidan in Legion), and in that context would be a lot more enjoyable. To have some sort of new character introduced over the course of the expansion (or to flesh out an existing but underused character) and display Machiavellian dedication to the cause, clash with Khadgar and Turalyon, and eventually buddy it up with Velen at the end (again: Maiev, or hey Any Fucking Orc) of the expansion, with literally the exact same behavior and personality, would have been entertaining. All of Illidan’s extra as shit world quest dialogue growled by Maeiv or some up-and-coming Orc that’s Broxigar 2.0? Awesome. It’d be a nice foil to the more light banter most other quest givers (Jala Rivermane excluded leave me alone cow granny) provide, and would convey a sense of urgency and importance of defeating the Legion at any cost. But on Illidan they’re obnoxious, pretentious, and give me a constellation of hives in the shape of the Matrix’s infamous red pill. Illidan’s issues are that he’s been motivated by selfish reasons up to Legion (He actually claims in his goodbye to Malfurion his drive for power was always to stop the Legion but he was a dickhead spoiled brat mage well before they showed up), has been a categorical failure at everything he’s attempted, and has committed acts of tyranny and genocide that would land him a spot in the dock at Nuremberg where his fellow night elves would pretend they don’t have arcane up their ass like he does fel. Illidan claims that he was always motivated by a drive to save Azeroth, but I’m not sure where torturing Broxigar factored in to that, throwing a hissy tantrum and quitting the druids because his brother got more likes on his instagram posts of his sweet vine work, or his shenanigans at the well of eternity that led to the sundering and nearly released Sargeras AND the Old Gods, or absorbing the power of the Skull of Gul’Dan when he could’ve just not done that, or killing Maeiv’s squad and her girlfriend and trying to kill Maeiv, or literally everything he did on Outland that included attempting to murder the greater population by stealing all their water so he could make his own legion while screwing Kael’thas and his posse of blood elves, and do you see where I’m going with this? It all ties into another of Illidan’s big themes: failure Illidan is a serial failure. That isn’t to say he’s some worthless chump, combatively inferior to your average mailbox dancer and so dumb he only has Thalassian under his language skills, but Illidan ultimately fails at every great task he sets out to do, often because of his own selfishness and superiority complex. Some of his schemes are actually highly ambitious and clever. Like, it takes a whole other kind of balls to come up with a plan to make another well of eternity so you can summon your own horde of demons, and he even managed to incorporate gazers into his personal horde before the Legion could manage the feat. But every one of his schemes blows up in his face: Tyrande cucks him, Broxigar and Malfurion and Ronin are actually useful in the War Of The Ancients, the night elves shove him in religion jail for trying to make another well, he fails to drop an entire fucking temple on Maeiv, Arthas chops his dick off at less than a quarter of his FULL POWER!!!, he can’t keep his own posse together because he’s a huge dick (sorry bro being alpha as fuck doesn’t bring back your pee pee besides we all know Kael’thas was the top), and Maeiv globals him which is just sad because he got destroyed so fast he didn’t even trinket or use a single defensive CD. Any way you look at it, Illidan is a serial failure, which makes all of his posturing, peacocking dialogue in Legion extremely bizarre, because he talks like he was stomping the Legion without us when he couldn’t even stomp Shattrath with a single Naaru to back up the defenders (which makes me question angrily how he zapped the prime Naaru but haha blizzard activision games), and it just comes off as flat and about as eye roll inducing as getting artifact power for your first Argus kill (I’m not bitter). All of these things, combined with his inherent selfishness, bizarre claim of fighting the Legion for ten-thousand years when he was actually locked up in Maeiv’s super rad Girls Club getting dicks drawn on his face and being forced to watch Orange Is The New Black (we all know Illidan only watches anime ESPECIALLY Dragon Ball Z Bleach and Naruto), and his explicitly stated circumstances of being in Outland to hide from Kil’Jaeden then try and prepare his asshole for Kil’Jaedan’s burning fist are just way too at odds with the character presented to us in Legion, which should have again been someone else. Personally I’d rather have seen Maeiv thrust into Illidan’s role, finding renewed purpose in hunting down the cosmic chad ulltimately responsible for everyone she was close to dying, or an orc, because the Burning Legion was as calamitous for them as it was for the Draenei (not that Blizzard ever actually acknowledges that because the orcs are MANLY AND NOT GAY AT ALL IT’S JUST NAKED WRESTLING OK!!!), but for some reason they decided Illidan merited not one but two WoW expansions dedicated to him as well as one WC3 expansion where he was extremely influential in the plot as well. Also his farewell to Tyrande made me sigh actual years of my life into oblivion because it was the typical man-places-woman-on-pedestal-as-uncorruptible-emotional-work-horse garbage.

la petite colombe winter menu

On Friday I had the privilege of eating at La Petite Colombe in Franschhoek for the first time. I was invited to experience their winter special menu which runs until 31 August and I was blown away. Every course was inspired and utterly delicious. You are taken on a eating journey that tantalizes every tastebud and it was hard to pick out a favourite. But you don’t need to because they are all quite different and rattle your mind as much as your palate. The dessert brought tears to my eyes because I was so happy to be experiencing something so incredible and sad at the same time as I am unlikely to every eat this exact dish again. They change the dishes on their menu fairly often to keep it fresh.

The restaurant offers a novel ‘ meet the chefs’ courses where guests are invited up to a table in front of the pass that is decorated like a forrest floor. You get to see whats happening the open plan kitchen while tasting their take on ‘egg & soldiers’. Essentially crispy brioche wafers with foi gras sandwiched in the middle. You dip into a sublime porcini broth. This course is an add on to the winter special and is delightful.

We enjoyed the winter menu with the wine pairing and I can highly recommend this. The wines were straight out the top drawer and paired perfectly with every dish. Having this duel experience of the food and the wine takes your senses to the next level. So much work goes into selecting which wine goes with each dish, it is a real treat not to have to think about it.When you are dining at the top end of the spectrum, you can totally hand over the decision reigns to the restaurant and I love to sit back and enjoy whatever is put in front of me.

The service was nothing short of perfect and if I think back on the whole lunch it was flawless and the best fine dinging meal I’ve had in two years. It is one that has set a benchmark and will stay with me for a long time.

I was delighted to meat the talented young Cape Town chef, John Norris-Rogers, who heads up the kitchen. La Petite Colombe only opening in August 2017 but if it doesn’t make the Eat Out Awards Top 10 this year I will be very surprised.

When John was asked what his passion and vision for the cooking industry is, he says, “I love the fact that the industry is constantly evolving – especially at a fine dining level. There is always a chef somewhere in the world doing something unique and special at any given time. This keeps everyone on their toes and keeps everyone pushing the boundaries and making new discoveries in the cooking world. It’s incredibly exciting! The world of food is so dynamic. I hope to never lose sight of how important and refreshing it is to keep discovering new foods, trends, flavours, cultures, techniques, and thereby inspiring creativity!” Norris-Rogers admits that he also has a great appreciation for the classics and going back to what he learnt as the fundamentals of cooking. A believer in great produce, he loves coming across a food item that is of the most superior quality, and he loves the fact that many suppliers take as much pride in their produce as chefs do in their food. In closing, John says, “My vision for the future is to never stop learning and discovering, without ever losing the importance of flavour.”

A discovery of both Milan and Leonardo Da Vinci’s Work & History

We are just a few weeks away from Milan Design Week mos especially to one of the main design events of the year: The Salone del Mobile.Milano. In this article, we’ll focus on this year’s theme of both events: The Tribute to Leonardo Da Vinci’s Work and Life.

This tribute happens as a celebration of the 500th Anniversary of his Death. With that in mind, the organization decided to advance with this daring concept sure to likely put the 58th edition of the biggest design event in Europe on the map for the ages.

Leonardo da Vinci is recognized nowadays as one of the biggest artists his time and all time for that matter! For that reason, Salone del Mobile and Milan will pay tribute to his work through two outstanding and hugely evocative installations at Fiera Milano. To create the concept they’ve picked an element that embarks more than one factor: the relationship between Da Vinci, Milan, and Water for the theme of one of the exhibitions.

The first exhibition is called “AQUA”, and it’s a tribute to the originality and visionary mind of Da Vinci’s studies and work and, of course, establishing a connection to one of his greatest works in the region of Milan: The Naviglio Grande!

It’s obvious for those who know Milan and Da Vinci’s work that you’ll be able to find this exhibition at historical Conca dell’Incoronata, an element of Milan with construction planned by Da Vinci himself during his work on another one of his great works: The Naviglio Grande! The Conca dell’Incoronata was decommissioned in 1930, but from 1496 to 1929 was considered one of the main sources of natural water of Milan.

This historical site will be covered over with an architectural insert in the form of a great expanse of water, on the edge of which a huge LED screen will become a window onto a future Milan. It will be showing a skyline that changes according to the time of day. Beneath this structure, a wunderkammer (cabinet of curiosities) will be created, where visitors can experience all the beauty, energy and shape of water, enfolded in image and sound thanks to the use of cutting-edge technology, in a totally self-contained environment.

The second exhibition is at Pavilion 24 of Fiera Milan and it’s called DE-SIGNO. It will be honoring not only Italian Design but also Da Vinci’s Artistic Work, by exploring the awesomeness of the Made in Italy design products and craftsmanship. It will also serve as a way of comparing the current products with the ones made during the times of the great Master. This exhibition is sure to be compiling all the stunning contemporary design we’re all so used to see at Salone del Mobile.

Milan was one of Da Vinci’s favorite cities, only next to Florence. He lived in this very same city many years, helping to shape the cultural, architectural and artistic vision of this incredible and historical town! In Milan, he painted some of his most recognized and accomplished works of art, namely the iconic painting of “Last Supper” as well as the aforementioned develop the Naviglio Grande that, till this day, remains as the top water canal of the Lombardia Region.

Next to the iconic “Mona Lisa” painting, that’s currently on exhibition at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the “Last Supper” it’s one of the main paintings of Da Vinci’s legacy. Today you can see this amazing masterpiece in Milan, namely, at the iconic Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, that’s been the Home of this Masterpiece for decades.

Another relic of Leonardo Da Vinci that’s still in exhibition in Milan is the Atlantic Code! For those who don’t know, the Atlantic Code is the corpus of Leonardo’s autograph manuscripts and is so called because of the size of its sheets, used at that time for the geographical atlases. This relic includes a series of sketches, preparatory drawings for paintings, mathematical calculations, philosophical meditations and even recipes. It’s a real journey through time and the ingenious mind of Leonardo da Vinci that’s currently in exhibition at the Ambrosiana Art Gallery.

Da Vinci lived right in front of the church at the 65 Corso Magenta ate Casa degli Atellani! The home belonged to the Atellans, a family that were courtiers of the historical Milanese citizen Ludovico Sforza, one of the patrons of Da Vinci. In 1948, the Atellani had a vineyard planted for Leonardo, who loved good wine and worldliness and loved this gift very much. That vine still exists and, today, it’s an important historical style.

If you want to get the Inspiration Vibe of Da Vinci, then you need to step away from the City of Milan and visit the outskirts of the city! You can go to Paderno d’Adda, a place where the River Adda flows. It’s in this stretch of river you can visit the places where Leonardo studied the rapids to find a way to transport the building materials by water despite that stretch was not navigable. Leonardo took inspiration from the landscapes of this river for the backgrounds of his famous paintings “Virgin of the Rocks” or even “Mona Lisa”/ “Gioconda”.

Then you can also see the Duomo, Milan’s most Iconic building and it’s construction spanned for over 400 years! Some parts of the cathedral were designed during Da Vinci’s lifetime, Da Vinci only made some drawings for the domed crossing tower but these never moved to the construction phase because, according to the local legends, Leonardo told his superiors that his plans and options where inferior to the ones provided by other two court architects: Amadeo and Dolcebuono.

Latyl we recommend you to go to Sforza Castle in central Milan! In here he painted the famous Frescoed Ceiling of the “Sala delle Asse” (‘Room of the Wooden Panels’), combining a naturalist depiction with a strong symbolism! The Sforza Castle houses another important work by Leonardo: The Codex Trivulzianus. It consists of a manuscript containing notes and drawings dealing mainly with military and religious architecture.

Most of the events of Milan regarding DaVinci will only start to happen in May (aka The Month that Leonardo Died). Milan is preparing a huge celebration and thought all the Summer you’ll be able to visit countless exhibits, expos and masterclasses about the painter! One of the big events of the programme is the return to Milan of the “Madonna Litta”, which the Hermitage Museum in St.Petersburg is loaning to the Poldi Pezzoli Museum for a special exhibition.
