I've been wanting to do this post for a while now so here is EVERYTHING I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT THE GHOULS' IMPERA COSTUMES.

Buckle up because I have a LOT to say about those, this is gonna be a very long one.

The costumes were designed by B Åkerlund, a Swedish costume designer who's worked with Ghost since at least Meliora (that's as far back as I was willing to scroll on her Instagram page lol). B Åkerlund has also worked for many other musical artists such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osborne, Blink 182 and Hollywood Undead (information from her own website)

The masks were made by Bob Basset, a visual artists who works a lot with leather. I find his work fascinating, you can look him up on Instagram (nsfw warning, there's a few naked ladies).

Fun fact! The horns are real cow horns. That's the reason some of them have gold tips, to hide the imperfections that come with working with actual horns.

He does have a shop where he sells his items, there's a mask there very similar to the Impera ones. You can also buy Papa's batwings if you happen to have 2500$ lying around!

The jackets are made on the same model as one of Papa's. The back is decorated with a spine-like design made from leather and cording. It's adorned with a few of our classic Impera buttons. Some of the hems were left raw and some deliberate weathering was done to make it look old and worn.

Fun fact! The shoulder pieces are not sewn into the garment, I would assume for easier cleaning. I don't know if they're held by strong magnets or snap buttons.

The vest (my beloved 😩) is made from flocked velvet in a paisley pattern, the front hems embellished with satin piping. It closes in the front with custom metal clasps that are riveted into the garment. The D parts are attached with what seems to me like wide elastic, which would lessen the pression on the clasps when moving around a lot. The back is made from two different types of fabric, I'd have to touch it to be able to tell you what they are. I assume the panels closer to the sides have some mild stretch to them. The top of the shoulders are decorated with Impera grucifix patches.

The shirts were not custom made for the ghouls, altho they were altered. The original shirt in the vintage painter linen shirt from Punk Rave and it is still being sold. Some of the cuffs were altered, removing the ruffles for some of the ghouls, but not all. They were removed for Dew, Mountain and Phantom, Aether's didn't have them either. As far as I can tell, all the ghoulettes still have them.

An unfinished piece of linen serves as an ascot, that piece is decorated with a metal devil skull. The colour of the skull doesn't appear to be consistent between each ghoul, Dew's looks gold almost bronze while Phantom's is a silver-like colour.

Another modification is the buttons, a small portion of them were removed in favor of our Impera buttons. Some of the ghouls have more buttons replaced than others, which is still a mystery to me.

The pants are called Jodhpurs, they were invented in the 1800s as horse riding pants. The wide part at the hips and thighs allowing for better movement. The ones the ghouls wear don't reach all the way to their ankles, they stop a bit past the calf muscle, hidden by the boots. (Yes, the ghouls are effectively wearing capri pants)

The boots are motorcycle riding boots, decorated by a grucifix. Like the shirt, they can still be bought online through the All American Boots website, altho the price tag is... Headache inducing to say the least.

The cape is a piece of costume that was only briefly worn on stage by the ghouls, Aurora being the only one who still wears one. I would assume it gets in the way of playing very easily. The cape itself is made of two fabrics, a light blue satin and a dark grey suede. The two pieces are not sewn together at the bottom, they move freely from each other. The cape is attached on the left shoulder with a harness piece that has one strap across the chest, decorated with a metal buckle, and one under the armpit.

In no particular order, my top looks from the 2023 Met Gala "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line in Beauty"

My thoughts are below, but I'll be honest, I didn't really do any background research this year because there wasn't much to be done. These are really just my opinions on whether or not I liked the look.

Ironically, I felt this was a very mediocre year, which led to me having a lot more favorites than usual because they were kind of all on the same level. In previous years I would have separated this into multiple posts, but I don't really see the point.

Doja Cat: I wanted someone to dress up as Choupette the cat and she delivered, and managed to do so in a way that was still fitting for the event

Keke Palmer: She looked amazing, and really captured the Chanel look with the bombshell hair and the extremely bedazzled tweed. I honestly don't want to think about how much that dress weighed

Anne Hathaway: Besides that fact that I love everything Anne Hathaway has ever done, this dress was the perfect combination of honoring Lagerfeld's style while also incorporating it into the style of the brand she was representing (Versace). It had tweed and pearls, but also sex appeal and safety pins

Cardi B: First, I just want to appreciate her ongoing commitment to high fashion and the fact that she had three (3) completely separate looks. This particular Miss Sohee look was my favorite because she's living out my glinda barbie mermaid fairy princess dreams

Harvey Guillen: This was one of the first looks I saw of the night, and still one of my favorites. It has all the Lagerfeld style essentials, but still manages to look unique. Plus, creative menswear always gets extra points because the bar is painfully low, though this year was a surprisingly pleasant exception.

Jennifer Lopez: It's not the most creative look, but it's right up my alley and honestly, do we expect anything groundbreaking from JLo? She's always going to show up in something pretty that's decently on theme enough for me to just focus on whether or not I like it. And this immediately makes me think of classic Chanel.

Penelope Cruz: She was a co-host, it's vintage Chanel couture from the 80's, and she's one of the people I most heavily associate with Lagerfeld and Chanel. A win all around.

Russell Westbrook: I really want to give Russell Westbrook credit for always showing up to the Met Gala and really going for it. I love all the details: the pearl necklace, the tweed blazer with floral clasps, the bows on the shoes

Chloe Fineman: Another first look that turned out to be a favorite. This again had all the necessary design elements without feeling like a cheap knockoff. Also major points for the bedazzled cat bag.

Anok Yai: I don't know and I don't care how this relates to theme, she looked like a goddess

Bad Bunny: Another man not only doing something interesting but incorporating the theme? Genuinely shocking. Obviously I loved the OTT floral cape, but I really loved the ode to c. 2005 Chanel with the backless suit and backwards necklace.

Gisele: She wore the same dress from an iconic 2007 editorial, proving not only that she still has it, but that she's always had it. A true supermodel.

Salma Hayek: She looked hot, I don't know what else you want me to say about it. Also it had color, which nothing else did. My eyes were starving for color.

Glenn Close: For starters, she needed an entire team to carry her train so props for that. She brought the drama, the glitz, and the "age is just a number so shut the hell up" glamor.

Lil Nas X: This was, for lack of a better phrase, a cheeks out, bedazzled, balls to the wall look. The Choupette inspiration is more obvious when he was inside with the fur (ish?) coat on, but I honestly didn't care. I needed a moment and he delivered. Though I do wonder (1) how long it took to bedazzle him and (2) will he every fully be de-glittered.

Brian Tyree Henry: I don't know if it's the pose or the cape, but it's giving me dramatic shakespeare vibes and I appreciate it.

Naomi Campbell: The only issue I have with this look is that they called 2010 Chanel Couture "vintage" and I can't accept that. Beyond that, I mean, it's Naomi Campbell in Chanel Couture. I was also dying for any semblance of color at this point and somehow this dress was among the most colorful

Jenna Ortega: The perfect combination of chanel tweed cropped blazer/mini skirt and the Wednesday Addams aesthetic. Which was interesting because I thought she was trying to move away from that but I don't care it was a successful look

Ava Max: Chanel was known for the haute couture bride, and this not only really captures that, it was one of the most and quite honestly only majorly dramatic looks of the night

Halle Bailey: She looked like a mermaid and I love that for her

Ashley Graham: I would have loved this look regardless, but after seeing the dress it was modeled after, I also think it was one of the best tributes of the night

Tems: Has she ever looked bad on a red carpet? Her headpieces are just getting bigger and more elaborate and I see nothing wrong with that.

Diddy: I love the drama + the floral cape, though I am left wondering how he didn't faint under all of that. Also, you can roast me all you want for captioning his post with Sean Combs but that's what was given to the AP so it's what I went with.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander: A final man who followed the theme and wore something interesting, arguably more interesting than some of the women. I actually think I like this look better without the coat over it.

The Sinful Bat loomed overhead: the tall dark spire blackening the skies above.  In the twilight, the magenta lights buzzed on, inviting patrons into the safety of its music-drenched darkness.

At the end of the road, Torque spotted the crowd ambling around the base of the Bat.  Vocatia, for the moment, was nowhere in sight.  He side-stepped behind a nearby shop booth and ducked his head to hide under its awning.  She would be a while, several hours long past curfew.

Spotting a glass bottleneck poking out of a crate, Torque tried to ignore it.  Some sense of sobriety would help convince her.  He tried to focus on the crowd, but the chill wind sent shivers down his neck.  Sweat beaded on his brow as his eye drew back to the bottle.

If he thought to bring his helmet, he could simply slip it on.  Its lack of eye holes would put the bottle out of sight and thus out of mind. Instead, he leaned his head against the wall and forced his focus ahead.

The sky fell dark and eventually the mass of bodies thinned and disappeared.  Torque dozed off, the empty bottle clasped in his fingers and resting on his chest.  His tail twitched as the dancers snuck past him, Vocatia eyeing him as she took up the rear.

Once the girls were home, Vocatia came back to the little liquor shop and the sleeping Warlord.  She touched a glittering hoof to his tail and shoved it out of the way.  Approaching him, she had to straighten her legs to pry the bottle from his fingers.  A true Vactyr vintage, a gift from the home world.  And much stronger than one would expect.  She plucked a golden feather from her cape and stuffed it into the neck of the bottle as payment.  Then she set it in the crate.  

Her tail swayed as she turned to her sleeping friend. She stretched up to pat her palm against his chest plate.

A soft yellow glow came from his eyes as they opened.  They flickered as he got his bearings and found her soft smile staring up at him. A small smirk played at the corner of his tusks.  “Oh, good,” he hummed, lifting his fingers to caress her hand.  “I was meanin’ to chat with you.”

“Oh yeah?” She asked with the soft encouragement of a patient mother.  Vocatia grabbed his hand and started to step back to help him onto his hooves.  “It’s gotta be important, you’ve been out here for hours.”  He staggered once he got upright, the side of his tail smacking against the booth.  Wrapping her arm around his thin waist, Vocatia steadied the drunken, chuckling Warlord.  “Ain’t you supposed to be on the Stryker today?”

He tried to shoo her off him, gently prying her arm from him and dancing around.  “Oh no, this was too important to wait until my next patrol.” Cupping her generous horns in his palms, he made her stare up at him.  

Vocatia lifted a brow, becoming less amused by his slurred antics the longer he held her in place. “Somehow I don’t think you’re gonna tell me you’re leavin’ the service.”

“I want you to come back with me,” he purred, a worried wrinkle crinkling at the corners of his eyes. “I’ll make you second-in-command. I can keep you safe.”

Her nose scrunched in disgust, and she shoved his hands away from her horns.  Vocatia growled, "I don't think so, mate."  She stepped back, shrugging her feathery cape back onto her shoulders with a huff.  “I ain't goin' back.”  Pointing a claw to her scalp at the base of her thin crest, she added, “Not gettin' another bug in my head tellin' me what's what."

A pout stuck out between his tusks, disappointment dripping down his throat. He averted his eyes towards the empty alley, his tail and ears drooping.  Opening his mouth to speak, he flinched when she shoved a finger in his face.   

"If you want to be with me, you gotta leave the service."  Her bark snapped with ultimate finality; her head tilted to challenge him eye-to-eye and aiming the tips of her horns for his throat.  "Remember the plan?  How're we supposed to look for our kid if we're slaves to the Empire?"

Torque slunk back, ducking his head.  While her scant outfit offered little in defense compared to his armour, he knew a fight would end badly.  Mares were ruthless and Vocatia was no different.  “We’d have the Stryker, we’re sure to find him if he’s still on planet.”

She huffed, waving off his silly idea.  “Then what? We all live happily on the Stryker, forced to be bled dry so those leeches can be satisfied?”  Gripping his elbow, she forced him to turn around back towards the gate.  “It ain’t happenin’.”  With a hoof to the ass, she urged him to walk away.  “Go sober up before you regret it, dumbass.”  

Head hung low, he gave her a dejected glance before creeping back from whence he came.  Vocatia watched him slink until he exited the gate.  She shook her head as she turned back to the Bat.  “Idiot.”

Blue Bow Clasp, or A Perennial Motif in Fashion

A bow can be a real thing in fashion. Think two actual lengths of cloth tied into a bow that closes a dress or shoe. Pull on it and the dress or shoe falls open. Or it can be an unreal thing. Think a bow on a dress that looks tied but does not untie because it is really one length of cloth looped prettily and another length tacked around it keeping the pretty loops in place. Or a bow can be a motif. For example, the trompe l-oeil, French for “fool the eye” of a dark sweater with a an apparent pale collar and bow which was really only the use of two different colors of yarn which became a fad that made Elsa Schiaparelli famous for designing it in 1927. Bows have been tacked all over dresses as well, again serving no purpose but decoration.

I've made it my mission this year to buy a red Cape with a hood this year at the ren faire so I can cosplay lup at the upcoming con. What are the best materialsi should look for, for something that wont give me heat stroke ?

Probably linen or a linen/rayon blend? If you use French seams you won’t have to line it, and the right fabric will drape and billow nicely. Something like this or this or this. 

oh wait, you said ‘buy’ not ‘make.’ uh... can I encourage you to consider ‘make’ as an option? Simple hooded cloaks are not super hard to put together -- it’s all rectangles and sewing in straight lines. And you can pick your own buckle or clasp -- maybe a cool vintage one?
