In the 1920s and 1930s, this is how cigars were sold in stores... in handsome boxes of assorted materials that came in all sizes from small to jumbo. The bottom two are made of the harder-to-find cardboard variety and are part of the King Edward brand, which was deemed the bestselling cigar in the world in the 1940s. I love the whole visual appeal of these packages. From their bold typography to their colorful paper labels inside and out. Their unique shapes and sizes make fantastic storage vessels for all sorts of kitchen and pantry items these days - everything from bar cart accessories to flatware to handwritten family recipes fit nicely tucked inside. 👑 King Edward was based in Florida but named after King Edward of England. My wonderful grandpa Herbert who also lived in Florida in his later years, was a cigar smoker his whole entire life. Every afternoon he’d sit on his back porch with his cigar and a cup of coffee and his crossword puzzle and just take a break from the day. If my sister and I were visiting then we would sit out there with him, and he’d tell us stories about life at the fire house and the crazy adventures he’d have trying to cook meals every day for the crew while also fighting fires himself. It’s funny how just the sight of an almost one hundred year old box can bring back such clear memories of a time and a person from decades ago. Here in the South entire generations have been raised on porch stories, and I can’t help but wonder what sorts of conversations are wrapped up in these old boxes.
