I am an abolitionist I do think that the term "violent crime" as it is actually used is less than useless and that people convicted of so-called "violent offenses" should not be excluded from reform measures. I do believe in the actual total dismantling of the prison system. I do, actually, believe that the way that the label "sex offender" is applied and how the sex offender registry works in reality is a reflection of the injustices and inequities of our system. I don't think that formerly incarcerated people are disqualified for being advocates of their own cause by virtue of the nature of their crime. but there are limits. I don't think we should be overly permissive toward men with a history of rape and domestic violence nor that we should allow them to downplay what they actually did. and I think that abolitionist spaces have a rape and DV apologia problem. I think many activist spaces have long had a problem of protecting predatory men and downplaying violence against women in the movement(s). and I think liberals and moderates and conservatives jump on this to dismiss abolition as a political framework and movement despite the fact that their spaces have the exact same fucking problem. and I think that opponents of abolition are too comfortable with their indifference to the massive amount of sexual violence facilitated by the carceral state and systems of policing

#I don't buy that rapists are the least likely to reoffend of all incarcerated people #I think they're the least likely to get caught and the most likely to target increasingly vulnerable people #I think similarly of domestic violence #but I also do not believe that incarceration keeps women safe #on the contrary #it victimizes women and particularly rape csa and dv victims at an alarming rate #I do not think that prison is the most effective way to dismantle or even punish male violence #and I think we will never come up with a better solution if we pretend prison is the best we can do #incarceration itself is a system of male violence #and locking up rapists and domestic abusers does not solve the issue of domestic abuse. it merely puts it out of view #at the same time. if your violent boyfriend is in prison then he's not hitting you #but that does not mean he can't abuse you still #the afterlife of domestic violence can persist even if an abusive man is dead #and so on #I think this is a very difficult issue with no easy solution #demonizing dv and rape victims and oversimplifying their desires and motivations is not one of them #neither is carceral liberalism or worse #tough on crime conservatism #unfortunately we actually do literally live in a society where nothing exists in a vacuum and no issue is one or two dimensional

when i was in elementary school in the early aughts the boys in my class decided that they had to protect themselves against the girls so they made a "boys' team" and a "girls' team" and the girls' team was all the girls with names like kaylee and cassie who loved lip gloss and sparkly nail polish and playing house. however i was friends with these boys and so i got to be on the boys' team and wrassle with them at recess and go to sleepovers with them where we'd all sleep in big cuddle puddles and also practice kissing bc as the only girl i was the only one they were allowed to practice kissing with (it being the early aughts and us going to conservative christian school). in fifth grade all of a sudden things changed and the boys i'd been best friends with since age six turned weird and mean and hostile and i nearly got actually for real expelled from christian private school because i tackled and beat the absolute fucking piss out of one of them because he kept pinching/hurting me when i told him to stop and the teachers thought it was cute. until i was trying my hardest to bash his teeth in. then it was no longer cute or fun for them. then my friends in middle school were a group of weird outcast girls who are all now either she/they dykes or tradwives with no inbetween. unsure how to conclude this post except to say that probably all of this is unsurprising if you've followed me for a bit AND that if a kid is constantly trying to beat the absolute fucking piss out of their friends then it's PROBABLY BECAUSE THE ADULTS DIDN'T INTERVENE IN AN OBVIOUSLY BAD SITUATION BEFORE THAT POINT.

hullmetal girls: two girls fall in love (I think?) in a military academy after being turned into weapons in a completely space-faring society. I believe one of them was a rich officer-track girl and the other was poor and in it for the family pension. But oh that’s so interesting! Will we be exploring THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM? Themes of BODILY AUTONOMY? Themes of perhaps even GENDER relating to bodily autonomy or MEDICAL AUTONOMY or PHYSICAL DEVALUATION? How about a look into WHY THIS SOCIETY IS SO DAMN BIFURCATED? or perhaps WHY THERES A NEED FOR MILITARY AT ALL? We sure fucking won’t!

All of this is Backdrop you see! Because it sounds Cool. A little bit of spice, perhaps, for what is maybe the MOST milquetoast romance I have ever read wherein neither of the characters was even differentiable from any other. Nobody had an arc. Nobody had a theme or god forbid a thematic resolution. Things happened because they were cool and sounded neat.

I’ve read books with bad writing before but usually those books were at least passionate and TRYING. I’ve never read before or since a book that was so empty and devoid of any deeper meaning. Shallow in the MOST literal sense. And to be frank I WAS digging! These books are a backyard sandbox marked out like an archeological site.

hot take: I didn't love El hitting Angela. Yeah it's satisfying to see a bitch get rocked but the fandom treats it like such a girlboss moment when that really wasn't meant to depict a healthy response. El has a potentially fascinating relationship with violence to explore, so narratively it's fine that that happened except that it kinda went nowhere. I guess she saw that her actions have consequences when she got arrested but then they just dropped it and she didn't seem to think anything of it or grow from it (unless I'm not thinking deep enough thoughts?). I know she had much bigger fish to fry, but I felt like we needed to see her interact with or at least think about Angela one more time to wrap that all up. Idk I love El but the whole bullying arc felt so 2D to me.

Even when Sam IS violent I don’t think it even necessarily comes from anger. It always just feels desperate to me. Even when he’s soulless, the decision to try to kill Bobby is desperate. He’s frantically trying to avoid unimaginable pain (I don’t think we even know whether soulless remembered his month in hell so idk whether that was a factor or just what other characters were saying about his soul ya know?)

hm i think this is really interesting. sam is someone who is both characterized by his anger and capable of terrifying levels of violence but i guess when you really look at it the two don't actually have much to do with one another. desperation as motive seems right, but i think in some instances that will bleed into anger anyways, like mystery spot. anger is the side effect of some other emotion, so i think the key difference between sam and dean would be something like dean's anger being motivated by frustration. which explains why he sees violence as a release, whereas sam sees it as the worst case scenario. this also explains why he so often justifies his violence as being for the greater good, something he has to do. or as self-preservation like in your example with bobby.
