#vip Choices
Text
So now everything starting in 2024 is going to be VIP, even sequels. PB’s taken their greed to a whole new level.
Am I surprised? No. Am I disappointed? Very.
Back in the 2016 to 2018 era, PB’s greed was at its lowest. Yes, they did have plenty of cash-grabby diamond scenes and outfits, and when Nexon came into the picture, that’s when collectibles became a thing in Choices series.
But not only was the greed pretty low, Choices had genuinely captivating stories with lovable casts of characters. There was innovation. There was real love and passion that went into these stories and characters. There was real character development, real story progression, and real relationship formation between the characters.
Yeah, Choices began to dip during 2019, and it got really bad during 2020 and onwards. Not-so-coincidentally, VIP released on July 21, 2020. It was around this time that the stories stopped being creative and fun, and became more of a chore to read, and in some cases, just mindlessly tap through for diamonds. More on this in a minute.
The lovable friend groups of the old days are gone, having been replaced by either 1-2 “best friends” who are just reused character sprites or simply no friends but the love interest(s) themselves.
Old Choices books gave us a ton of love interests to pursue, many of which had their own unique routes and dialogues. We typically had three, four, five, even six love interests in some cases. But nowadays, we’re lucky if we get two, and even then, they’re typically race and gender customizable, which makes them feel less like actual characters and more like interchangeable parts.
To add insult to injury, we now have mediocre or outright bad stories on top of the uninteresting friends, robotic (and toxic) love interests, and mounds of collectibles and diamond outfits to sift through. Stories that push a forced romantic or sexual narrative to make us spend our diamonds on raunchy scenes with the, again, boring at best and toxic at worst, love interests. Who, not to mention, typically have really ugly or unappealing character designs.
So to sum it all up, we’ve lost innovative stories and characters, and have gained…well, nothing. I don’t want to give up on Choices because plenty of the books they’ve already fully released have been good, and they still come out with gems every now and then. Plus, Choices has gotten me through some very dark times in my life, so I really don’t want to ditch it. But PB is making it very, very hard.
And you know what else? What really stings is that Storyscape (yes, I’m going there again), the only app that could’ve been real competition for Choices, got snatched away from us far too soon.
It really is a “you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain” situation.
And that fucking sucks.

Hot Shot Preview is out. It’s no doubt inspired by icebreaker and other similar books with the hockey romance.

So I had previously canceled VIP because choices had a dry spell with books that seemed interesting, but I recently reactivated it with Kindled coming out. I also took the time to check out some of the other VIP books.
So rapid fire reviews:
1. First Comes Love is a garbage fire. The entire book radiates so much Pick Me energy that I’m half expecting MC to go into a “pick me, choose me, love me” speech.
I can practically imagine that entire book told in a Reddit post from the point of view of Rebecca. “Help, my lover’s toxic girl best friend is trying to break us up.” It’s so, so toxic. We could have gotten an interesting story of friends deciding to marry out of loneliness while realizing they had feelings for each other yet we got a love triangle with the emotional maturity of a playground fight. I’m surprised they didn’t make Rebecca a cheerleader just to hit all the “You Belong With Me” boxes that book is trying to hit. (Seriously I mean, gasp! Rebecca loves to travel and likes fancy stuff? Oh the absolute horror!!!)
2. Roommates With Benefits. Meh. I couldn’t make it past the first episode because the book seemed dull. The love interests didn’t interest me and the writing is meh. Not much more to say.
3. Kiss of Death. This book is frustrating because they’re selling you a mob star crossed lovers book with an MC who is so outside of the world of mobsters that most of the book is just her venting about how everyone treats her like a kid. It’s not a mob book if the main character is shut out of the family business.
I wanted to like it because it gave me Halsey’s music video vibes of Now or Never which I liked, but the end result is meh. The book would have been fascinating had MC actually been a trusted member of the mob and had a lot more power and importance. Instead, it seems like this is a teenage coming of age story with no edge or flair.
I treated it as a diamond mining book and didn’t see any relationship development that isn’t just lust or horniness between MC and Vic. MC tells them she loves them after one day and there’s not much explanation why. Even her bestie calls her out on it. The book just hinges on one random less than a day long encounter years ago as the premise of their love story. Like I get Romeo and Juliet were also dumb kids who thought they knew what love was, but Choices’ characters are supposed to have been grown adults.
4. Getaway Girls. This book I’m actually enjoying. It’s funny and light hearted. I’m just a few chapters in but it seems fun. Not a huge fan of the constant POV change, but each character has their own personality and taste which keeps it from becoming repetitive. We’ll see how it goes.
5. The Duchess Affair. I love a good period piece and am always biased in favor of it. This one isn’t the best Choices has put it, but it’s interesting compared to its other VIP books. The adultery aspect is bleh for me, but it’s not surprising giving The Nanny Affair was such a hit. I wish they hadn’t made the husband such a tool and given more high stakes to the story, but I guess they had to let people not feel guilty about cheating.
I will say though, it’s weird to see MC fawn over their tutor while diamond mining. I haven’t taken any premium choices so her worrying and fretting over committing adultery is bizarre given she’s only just talked to her tutor a handful of times and sat close to them. This book was definitely not designed to be diamond mined.
6. Kindred. This one seems promising. I love the art and the premise behind the book. The LIs seem interesting and the world seems fascinating. I definitely don’t regret resubscribing just for this book. It seems like it could become a favorite of mine.
My only complaint is that the plot moves fast. It’s very blink and you miss an entire explanation. The book thrusts you into what seems like an already developed world and expects you to just know everything already. I can keep up with some ideas because I’m pagan and know some of the concepts, but it’s still confusing to have so many revelations in the first two chapters and no time in between. I wonder how many things were cut from the book before publishing. It just seems like the entire thing is on fast forward and the characters themselves don’t react to major, groundbreaking news. Hopefully this’ll be fixed going forward.
I also know there’s a select release for a TNA POV book, but I don’t have access. I envy those of you that do though.
So yeah, this current line up is not the best Choices has ever had, but it’s also not the worst.

I hated the book at first. No, I didn't hate the book, I hated the MC's attitude towards Rebecca, because she didn't deserve any of the shade the MC was throwing at her. I hated the fact that not even the nicer options were good enough. Because there was no need to be mean to Rebecca because she's doing her best to fit in a world she doesn't belong to (and because you're a 30-year old woman, MC!).
BUT (spoilers under the cut)
I'm really enjoying how the writers have been telling the story since the breakup. It's nice to see how vulnerable Blake is as a LI (it's pretty evident he's been wanting to kiss her for years now, but I'm thinking he didn't do it because he didn't want to ruin the only thing that was stable in his life, that is, his friendship to MC) and how the MC has been realizing she needs to take things slower because Blake may not be as ready for this relationship as she is (it's like she "paused" the idea of seeing Blake as a potential husband).
I'm kind of waiting to see where things go, but I have a good feeling about it. If I have to hate something now, it's the arc Rebecca is getting. It's like the writers don't know what to do about her anymore. Just let her go! I'm also kind of mad at Eve now. She was left in the middle of the conflict throughout the book, I wouldn't be mad at her if she says she wants to support Rebecca now instead of helping our MC. Our MC has Marcelino (and Blake, of course), she won't be alone.

Disappointed that there’s no book 2 for murder at homecoming and wish we could have solved perditas case. I’m at least glad we could choose to continue being a detective or stop and same with looking into her case with the diary etc. as I chose my mc to keep being a detective. At the same time with the bonus scene it was handled well for not having a book 2. Just sad the one case not solved was the one personal to mc.

I’m on a Lancelot only route, and yet this still felt like hurting a puppy 🤧 Sorry Arthur but my heart is with Lancelot. He took it so well too, though I wonder how he will react when he finds out the reason why.

Murder at Homecoming Clues
Like I did for The Unexpected Heiress, here is a compilation of clues for Murder at Homecoming. This list will compile every clue I can find, and please feel free to correct or send in any I have missed.
Spoilers below:
•Gabriela seemed paranoid before the Homecoming Dance and alluded to having a problem that she felt she needed to handle on her own.
•Her relationship with Tyler was struggling with Tyler being convinced she was cheating on him.
•Gabriela received a message warning her that they knew what she did. The message contained a bloody razor blade.
•Gabriela was found in the pool shortly after her Homecoming Queen victory was announced.
•Her left palm was bleeding and her right hand had a pinprick. The police claim she had narcotics in her system although MC points out that she was right handed and wouldn’t have used her left hand to inject herself.
•A pocket square belonging to Tyler was found by the pool where Gabriela’s body was found. It is inscribed with their sixth month anniversary and seemed to have been a gift for Tyler that he was wearing during the dance.
•Tyler is disliked by the members of his sport’s team. The players refer to him as the “golden boy” pointing to him being the favored athlete and mention him coming from a poor background which makes them prejudiced against him.
•The players on Tyler’s team believe Tyler gave the drugs Gabriela was injected with because he lives in an area where drugs are common. They also attempted to plant marijuana in his locker to have him expelled.
•Tyler was struggling with schoolwork. MC speculates that would have created more tension between them due to Gabriela being a good student.
•Gabriela’s family did not invite Tyler to speak at her funeral. It is confirmed that the two were going through a rough patch and were constantly fighting. It is even speculated that Gabriela was going to end things after Homecoming.
•The last text from Tyler to Gabriela read, “You are so dead.”
