I ran out of things to watch while drawing, again, so I decided (against all better judgment) to check out TDP season 4...

I love how (with the exception of possession) this show really goes out of its way to say that every time a character says some variation of the “I had no choice” it’s not true: you do have a choice, you always have a choice, you chose to do that. Soren’s “I . . . I had no choice” when he stabs the illusion of his father. He had a choice, and he chose not to let his father stab a child to death. A very fair choice, I don’t think many would argue that one. He chose Ezran. Then Terry’s “I-I had to. I couldn’t let him hurt you.” He chose Claudia. Viren’s “every step I took I took because I had to” which is rebutted by his own self “no matter where you are on the path, no matter what you’ve done before, every step forward is a choice.” And Callum’s “I had to, to save my friends.” Does doing bad things inherently make you a bad person? If you justify the doing of the bad things to yourself, because you had to, does that make it easier to do more of them in the future? And if you allow a bad thing to happen because you did nothing, what does that make you then? It’s why Finnegrin’s is it such a big deal dirtying yourself with a little dark magic? hit’s Callum so hard, because it’s a question that’s probably been on his mind before. Even if the alternative is inconceivable, the choice is still there, has still been made. Exploring that is so wonderfully fascinating

My Dragon Prince Boards season 5 part 1

So, now that season 5 is out I can share with you some of the work I did in the show as Storyboard Artist. This boards were done between the last months of 2021 and the first ones of 2022.

If you have questions about the process of boarding for the show please ask, just remember not to ask about seasons 6 and 7 :)

This is going to be more than one post, so It's divided by episode.

Episode 502

My first sequences was with Callum and Rayla in the forest in their way to Xadia.

Jack de Senna acting was so animated that was hard to not make Callum's acting super extra too. Callum/Rayla's dynamic is pretty fun.

My next sequence was with Claudia's team. A much dark mood than the previous one. Racquel Belmonte is my favorite voice actor in the show, so any chance to work with Claudia was a privilege. Also, Terry is a sweetheart.

The next one was when Viren meets Kpp'ar on his fever dream. This one was hard, is an slow moment that needs to feel tense but still interesting. I really love what the lighting and compositing team did with the lights here.

I also did the sequence when Callum and Rayla are leaving the comfy Inn, their interactions are so fun in that sequence, hahaha.

My last sequence on this episode (and my favorite of it) is the one where Callum and Rayla are crossing "The Scar".

I remember clearly reading on the script the line where Rayla is talking about how is a wound that is healing, and in one of the meetings I asked Aaron "Is Rayla talking about the scar or about their relationship?" ... well I leave the answer he gave me to your imagination ;) but after that meeting I added this shots :3

I really like the little symbolism at the end of the sequence with new life growing in a place like this. The world can heal.

In the event that the Novablade doesn't work on Aaravos, because .... he's already been stabbed with it, then...

Aaravos intentionally made Callum terribly afraid of him so Callum would HAVE to go to the Starscraper to kill him—so scared that he’s even doing it when he knows—and Rayla told him—it was a bad idea to bring the pearl. he just made it easier for him. the irony is wonderful. so Aaravos gets the sword, the last ingredient to his revenge on the stars, who he swears will fall.

so he's not dying at the hand of the Novablade, it's his weapon

Added thoughts from mutuals were-- Startouch elves were probably barred from entering the Starscraper for some reason, that’s why he needed to use Callum as his vessel, his Trojan horse—throwback to Fall of Lux Aurea btw, "You allowed my vessel to walk ...directly to the source of all your power?" He's done this before—anyway

Today I Realize

the intro to the show directly supports this idea

just the novablade, on screen. while the stars are falling. in aaravos’s name

in his name. the novablade is literally in his name. but also. metaphorically. likely going to be used/ the stars will be falling in his name

in the intro of a show planned out by arc, an intro set to go the rest of the arc

The only other place Aaravos's desire for the stars to fall is mentioned is in Patience.

And what's right below this part that closely parallels the arc 2 intro?

Ziard, Viren, and Callum. in S6, Claudia is also likely interacting with Aaravos. (S6 poster) so...why isn’t she here? Only Callum and Viren are here. Could it be because they’re fulfilling such similar roles?

After the end of s5, we know Viren is likely not the main player in Aaravos's game now, not an option (in one way or another) so

next up as Trojan horse / vessel…

Let's Talk About the Breakfast Guards!

Are they a couple? Was it just a brief thing? Or did some of us hallucinate the whole thing altogether?

We fist meet them in Book 1 Episode 2: What is Done.

They're a bit out of focus, but we can see some distinguishing details: the guy's beard and that the woman has blond hair and green eyes. I think she also has a braid under the helmet flap.

Also, I think they're voiced by Jason Simpson (Viren and Barius' voice actor) and Paula Burrows (Rayla and Opeli's voice actor).

The next time we see them again is 2 years later, in Book 4 Episode 3: Breathtaking. It looked like they were about to kiss! At least I think it's them

The guy is definitely the same, at least the same model. The woman's eyes look blue here. She's also got blond hair and has a braid, though here the braid is out.

They don't have any speaking lines.

The last time we see them so far is in Book 5 Episode 7: Sea Legs. They're stationed outside Lux Aurea and the guy seems to be flirting with a Sunfire Elf guard! The human woman guard looks annoyed.

We know this is the same breakfast guard. He's even referred to as such in the subtitles. But is the other human the same woman as before? She's blond and seems to have a braid but her ayes are definitely blue.

I do hope it's them each time and that we'll see them in the future. We only have 18 episodes left so probably at the end of the show but I would love a resolution for them 🤭

Punishment VS Acceptance: The Silvergrove and Callum

5x01, 5x04, and 5x08 were probably my favourite episodes for Rayla and Callum’s dynamic this season, for obvious reasons, and rewatching the bulk of the season next day after (and for a nice meta segue) I wanted to tackle the downright beautiful parallels between 3x03 and 5x01 (and a little bit of 4x03). 

So let’s get into it.

As we all know, Rayla returns home in 3x03, and gets a... more brutal welcoming than she was expecting, partially due to her own perceived crimes, and due to the Silvergrove’s associative prejudices/inclinations.

It is extremely important to note that (at this time at least) Rayla is banished for something she didn’t even do: “But you didn’t run away from anything. They just don’t know what happened.” And although initially dejected, she remains hopeful and ‘confident’ that Ethari wouldn’t have done the spell.

Ethari, however, temporarily chooses his grief and village over his daughter, and shuts her out... in a way, framing wise, that’s not too dissimilar from Callum’s initial cold reaction in 4x01.

Which makes sense, as both Ethari (and later Amaya) state is quite similar:

Then, of course, while pursuing the exact opposite of abandoning her family, and trying to figure out what happened to them, Rayla is caught emerging from Viren’s old sealed off chambers in 5x01 and accordingly arrested. What I found particularly interesting is that in spite of being fully able to, Rayla doesn’t actually say a single word during her pseudo trial, Callum and Opeli doing all the talking for her (on both ends). 

She knew stealing the key wasn’t the right thing to do, but felt unable (or unwilling) to share the burden of the coins with Callum, probably because she hasn’t been able to rely on anyone in a long time (two years alone did not help) and that it’s always been something she’s struggled with. Runaan and Callum’s complicated personal history likely didn’t help either.

And just like the Silvergrove, Opeli is arresting her on the basis of association:

and unlike the Silvergrove, on account of crimes she actually committed. 

And I think there’s a lot of reasons Rayla doesn’t speak up in this scene - shame, the way she’s never been particularly good at advocating for herself, the general emotional difficulties present - but I think the main reason is that she left Callum an explanation in Through The Moon about why she left and he was still (understandably) angry with her, but more than that is that the Silvergrove flat out did not care about her intentions, and she knows it. 

E: I told Runaan you were too good hearted for the work of an assassin, so I know you did not betray them out of malice. 

Why would this time be any different, especially when as stated, she’s done all the things she’s being accused of?

But Callum isn’t the Silvergrove, so of course he’s different.

Where they stripped her of her home and literal identity, labelling her a Ghost, he reaffirms that her name - “She’s not ‘the elf’ - she’s Rayla” and that he knows exactly who she is. Where the Silvergrove robbed her of a chance to explain herself...

Callum says that she doesn’t need to even when it’s being demanded of her. Whereas before her intentions didn’t matter, they’re all that count here, enough that he is willing to disregard literally everything else (including his own complicated feelings about said murder bow). 

C: I know this. [To love is simply to know this:] The tides are true as the ocean is deep. O: What does that mean, Prince Callum? C: It means I trust her. Unconditionally. Let her go. Now. 

He doesn’t know ‘what happened’ as far as her intentions and motivations, only the worst presentation of her behaviour. But he refuses to punish her for doing something alone, for not asking for help, for keeping a secret. Instead he’s warm and compassionate and vouches for her, and if anything takes a certain amount of self-imposed responsibility on his own shoulders of realizing that if Rayla didn’t feel like she could come to him with something, he needs to be doing something different. 

All while also reaffirming his faith in her - that it’s nothing that would hurt him, that she wants to tell him, that she will tell him one day, that she will be ready, and that he hopes she knows she can trust him.

Because he loves her.

its so wild that i can say that aaravos via little bug pal has spent time inside viren's body and done stuff like weave a caterpillar string sigil over his eye and get viren to give him some of his blood definitely watched viren sleep sometimes guided/somewhat possessed Viren a few times using his body to channel magic and after falling from the storm spire he perhaps literally needed to rearrange some of viren's guts before Personally spinning his corpse into a cocoon and to top it all off they have A CHILD together and this is all without having sex. frankly compared to half of this sex would've been LESS intimate
