postviralism

postviralism (view manifesto) is a social movement about making the pandemic count.

it is for those that were affected by the covid-19 pandemic, and the challenging national lockdowns that occurred all over the world; and those with issues similar to those experienced in/around this period, regardless of whether or not they occurred/began before or after the pandemic.

everyone has learnt a lot about mental health, mobility, and isolation, during the pandemic, and the importance of the internet as a tool for overcoming the problems associated with these issues has become overwhelmingly clear.

not everyone made it out of lockdown. and not everyone will.

but by utilising, inventing, and experimenting with, computer-aided forms of communication and presence, many of us can expand our existence far beyond the walls of our residence, and our previous circle of physical, mental, and social ability, creating a culture that explores and welcomes existing alternative and new forms of communication and interaction.

postviralism is not just for those affected by the virus directly - i.e. the poor victims who have tragically lost their lives to covid; victims of the debilitating sickness; the bereaved - but also for those affected by complications such as “the long covid”.

it is equally for those who have suffered mental health damage, trauma, and domestic abuse due to the lockdowns and restrictions.

it is about those who have struggled with similar issues before the pandemic, and those that will continue to struggle with new issues after.

postviralism has a specific focus on those with difficulty leaving the house, or communicating and socialising, for ANY reason.

this includes, but is not limited to:

people with debilitating and disabling bodily illnesses, or conditions that limit energy - including CFS/ME, post-viral fatigue, “long-covid”, and other “spoonies”

people with physical disabilities

people with mental disabilities

people with mental health problems (not just the “glamorous” ones that all the press)

people that are non-neurotypical

people with different communication/interaction styles and methods

we hope to utilise digital platforms, alternative communication methods, kindness, and tolerance, to enrich the lives of such people.

this can include newer technologies such as Virtual Reality, online “virtual” worlds, such as 2.5D (and 2D) social online worlds and MMORPGs; or more traditional technologies, such as instant messaging, video-calling, internet forums, and social media. postviralism argues that these worlds are real, and that these forms of communication are just as valid as any other.

it is about seizing this exciting new window of awareness into all of the aforementioned issues, and using it to come together and compassionately form a brighter future, where such people feel supported and included.

postviralism is not the same as viruspunk.

the term “viruspunk” was coined by Miguel Conner, and although predictions about the possible nature and rationale of such a thing were speculated by himself, and occultist Gordon White in the “Viruspunk Is Biopolitical”, a different, more declarative conception of the word was created alongside the later “postviralist” movement, as an accompanying attitude, label, and aesthetic.

postviralism was first officially created and coined by Ash Mohammed-Grange, in the posting of this manifesto on the 4th April 2021, although in the workings for a great while previously. this movement conceptualises viruspunk as an aesthetic and attitudinal expression of the values of postviralism - a badge of honour - and was not much (if at all), at the time of writing, inspired by Conner or White’s speculative notions; being itself declarative and defined (albeit with the awareness of the naturally evolving nature of such concepts and movements).

viruspunk is an emerging attitude and aesthetic, expressing the views of the Postviralist movement; the evolving aesthetics of viruspunk (at present highly inspired by solarpunk and cyberpunk) provide a recognisable face for the movement, a figurative/metaphorical manifestation of its philosophy, and a personal identifier, demonstrating allegiance to the movement and its ideals.
