“Rhaenyra and Alicent’s relationship wasn’t equal”
and that is the exact reason the narrative the show presents doesn’t work.
Rhaenyra is a true born princess, a dragon rider, her father’s favored child, and named heir to the throne. Rhaenyra is above Alicent in every way politically until she is married to Viserys and then Alicent is Queen through marriage only, but as we are shown in both show and book canon she takes pleasure in exorcising her power and station as Queen. Alicent in show was a noble born lady who had been aged down and forced to play into the many roles of all of Rhaenyra’s ladies in wait AND given Laena’s part. in the book Alicent is 10+ years Rhaenyra’s senior, known in Jaehaery’s court and then Visery’s through Otto. already we can see no matter how you spin it their relationship would always be imbalanced. they are in completely different classes and held to completely different responsibilities.
presenting their relationship as if it has equal footing serves to take away from the political scheming and ambition of each character and tries to give us this one note story of girl bosses and petty jealousy.
Rhaenyra and Alicent already have a complex and dramatic dynamic, they both have plenty of both justified and unjustified reasons to dislike/distrust each other. they don’t NEED the forced character swapping, age changing, and plot rearranging to give that to them.
this scene in particular was so book canon imo. even with the show age swapping and character changes this scene, the dialogue, everything about it encapsulated the fight between Alicent and Rhaenyra- their political and personal differences, their fight for their family, the scheming afterward with Otto/Daemon. it was possibly one of the most book canon moments in terms of characterization for either of them.

Eighteen-year-old Viserys consummated his marriage to Aemma when she was thirteen years old just after she began menstruating. Fifteen-year-old Aegon consummated his marriage to Helaena when she was thirteen. And people say that it was necessary and that both princes needed heirs immediately.
But we have a young fifteen-year-old King Jaehaerys whose marriage was opposed by his Hand and mother and he needed heirs to strengthen his right to the throne. But nevertheless, Jaehaerys refuses to have sex with thirteen-year-old Alysanne, whom he considers too young. And note, Jaehaerys waited two years until Alysanne herself insisted that their marriage be consummated.
We have thirteen-year-old Baela who insists on marrying Jace immediately, but Jacaerys himself asks her to wait.
We have Aegon, who waited several years after the Daenaera began menstruating before consummating their marriage.
Personally, it seems to me that Viserys and Aegon did not care at all about their wives. I often see opinions that say that Viserys and Aegon are not to blame, they are just teenagers, and they were allegedly forced to consummate the marriage by Baelon and Alicent in order to strengthen their sons' rights to the throne.
Hello? They literally had sex with their thirteen year old wives. How could they be forced to do this? At most, all those around them could do was to harass and irritate Viserys and Aegon with lectures about the importance of duty and the presence of heirs, but no one could physically force them to consummate the marriage.
If Aegon and Viserys truly cared about their wives, they would have waited a couple of years. And as a result, we all know what the consequences of premature consummation were for Aemma, and poor Helaena became the mother of two children at fourteen.
Viserys deserves the title of "Best father of the year". For his eldest daughter, he arranged a marriage that was destined to be unhappy and barren, and he forced his youngest daughter to marry at thirteen (Viserys himself consummated his first marriage to a thirteen-year-old wife, he certainly knew about the possible negative consequences for a wife who was too young, but he wasn’t care about the risk to his daughter’s health).
Viserys and Aegon are two selfish bastards.

Let us no longer hold ill feelings in our hearts. The crown cannot stand strong if the House of the Dragon remains divided. Set aside your grievances, if not for the sake of the crown... then for the sake of this old man who loves you all so dearly.
AKA Viserys just wanting his family to stop fighting and be happy and getting that as his last wish, if only for a little while.
