When collecting poems for an upcoming exhibit I realized that a poem I’d written in college, “Ghazal,” fit the exhibit’s theme perfectly. Yet although I could have sworn I’d seen the copy of the Virginia Literary Review where it was published just days earlier, I couldn’t locate it. 

I searched every possible location, many three or four times over, with no success. I even went so far as to go to the VLR’s web site to try to buy another copy of the old issue with my poem in it. When I didn’t hear back after a few days I considered it a lost cause, and began to compose another version that I’d hoped would be a close approximation. 

In some respects I believe this poem, “Ghazal for Lowell,” turned out even better.

What gives me chills is that once I finished this new version, my old copy of VLR turned up in a pile of books that I know I’d searched over and over previously. 

I wound up using both in the exhibit.

Sometimes the poetry comes from within, other times from beyond.

1e. Favorite Scene?

So there’s a few; obviously 999′s true end with sudoku is a strong scene, as well as Snake’s sacrifice in the incinerator... and I really do love those scenes. I’m also partial to any scene ever with Dio in VLR... because besides him being my fave, he’s very entertaining. I’d say one of my absolute favorite scenes with him, and a favorite in the series as a whole, is when everyone’s wrestling him to the ground to take the cyanide pill out of his hand. It’s a combination of sweet (because the other characters are, y’know, actively preventing the guy’s suicide) and funny (“Every minute we spend wrestling this prick is a minute we don’t have finding the bombs!”). It’s just... cinematic poetry!

Okay, so even though Dio and Luna are both in VLR, I have to rank the games as follows:

999 is stronger story-wise, but I have a soft spot for VLR for giving me my otp. ZTD.... I just don’t like much at all, oops.

5b. Do you usually go for the good or the bad decisions first?

Well, I’d say the good ones! I go for the ones I’d pick naturally, which are almost always the nice options haha. This applies to most choice-based games. Later on, I’ll go back and do the bad choices (and feel horrible about it!).
