Halloween Fic: Prologue
(This angsty little bit actually happens month before the story itself, but it's very important worldbuilding for the story. When the whole thing is done, it'll be published on AO3 as a two-chapter whole)
"This one's temperature is too high."
Damas frowned down at the pallet beside the vast Precursor statue that loomed over the dais. The survivor he'd tracked the beacon to that morning in the desert lay there, unresponsive to the whispered chanting and cooling packs of the monks. He'd been shocked to discover that what he'd taken for a young soldier was barely more than a child under the sweat and grime embedded in his pores. By the size of the bones standing out just a little too visibly against the Unclaimed's skin, and the teeth they could count, Brother Rhys reckoned the boy could be no more than three and a half lustrums: seventeen at the oldest.
Seventeen was just barely old enough for the Trials, and that was just the high estimate of the stranger's age. That complicated the usual procedures of dealing with newcomers to Spargus. If he survived -- and at the moment it wasn't looking terribly likely -- and it turned out he was younger than seventeen, some kind of arrangement would have to be made for a child-Unclaimed.
"Do you not have cooling packs?" Damas asked, gesturing to the boy and the two animals that had been found with him.
"They are inadequate, my lord," Rhys answered. "Our supplies were greatly depleted after a failed expedition of several acolytes to the Great Volcano."
Was that all? The king of the Wastelanders turned away with a dismissive gesture.
"Then keep his body submerged until his core temperature stabilizes. I have questions for this one."
Silence followed the command. When Damas turned, the monks were watching him with conflicted expressions. He frowned and paced to the edge of the dais.
"Well?" he demanded.
Another monk, lower in rank than Brother Rhys, made a pacifying gesture and said apologetically, "We cannot, my lord. It is improper."
The king curled his lip at them. "Oh? Tell me, when did it become improper to render aid to a child?"
Rhys raised a hand, silently forbidding his companion from speaking further. He bowed his head.
"He is an Unclaimed, sire. Only those who brought the Unclaimed into your city may give them the rites of Water and First Breath, by law."
His meaning was clear: if Damas wanted to this one to live, he had to deal with it himself.
But there was a problem.
The monks would not treat submersion as an emergency medical treatment. They were rigid and uncompromising in the arena of new citizens. No matter what Damas said, if the Unclaimed was submerged, even to lower his temperature, they would record it as the rite of First Breath. But the rite of First Breath was reserved for those who had earned their first amulet in the Arena; those who understood the laws of Spargus and chose to stay, sponsored by their Finders, would use the ritual to move from Unclaimed to Foundling in the city census, gaining the same legal status as any child born within the walls.
This Unclaimed would die long before he had the chance to test his mettle in the ring if his temperature was not brought down, and soon. But without that amulet, if he were to step out of line later, he would not be the only one held accountable.
Damas took one last look at the limp form, and -- with a fairly imprecatory prayer under his breath to the Six Patrons of eco -- he made up his mind.
The king tossed aside his staff with an echoing clash of metal against stone. The monks twitched, and the guards at the lift jumped. Damas ignored them. He stormed down the steps of the dais and grabbed the skinny boy's arm. For a moment, he was thrown off by the texture of scars swirling across the skin like silvery fractals. More questions without answers. He shook away his curiosity and dragged the Unclaimed from the pallet and down to the edge of the pools. The orange creature raised its head and let out a choked cry -- it likely thought he was going to harm its human.
This wasn't going to help its opinion.
Damas stepped down into the water and hauled the Unclaimed bodily in after him. Frustration boiled under his skin, making his movements rough and brusque as he pushed the boy down under the surface and held him there.
The Six were mocking him.
You couldn't handle a toddler. Try again, maybe you can keep track of one big enough to protect himself? Try try again, Damas. Try and fail again.
The frustration bubbled up into his throat and tasted of bitterness.
He hadn’t asked for this.
He didn't want another child. He wanted his son. He wanted Mar.
But he knew in his heart that he was far too stubborn to let this one die.
One of the newer guards watched, and realized soon enough that the boy was awake, yet he did not struggle.
"This one is too weak, sire," he sneered, looking down with contempt, "Let the waters claim him."
And perhaps it would have been the merciful thing to do.
But Damas hated being told what to do.
And Damas had always been the kind of man who refused to admit defeat.
The boy's body would realize it needed air soon enough, surely. Any moment now.
Usually candidates are fully lucid during this rite for a reason....
Two seconds passed. Then five. Nine. At eleven seconds, the boy's eyelids twitched like he was going to open them. Good.
"Push," Damas whispered, stubbornly willing him to fight, "Push, whelp."
The Unclaimed's body tensed as if in response and one hand slowly, ever so slowly, rose to break the surface as if he'd just realized he was underwater. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open -- horribly, familiarly blue -- and his fingers snatched at whatever he could reach, clawing weakly at Damas’s arm.
It was enough.
Damas yanked him up out of the water by the collar of his mutilated tunic and the boy coughed out a mouthful of water. There would be no going back after this. The second they'd entered the water, the Unclaimed -- the Foundling's -- fate was bound irrevocably to Damas’s.
Grimly, and as quickly as was socially acceptable, Damas recited the words that would make the ritual binding -- and would add one more duty to his endless litany of tasks.
"Take your first breath, child of the wastes. By this birth and the hands that bore you, you belong to the people of Spargus."
"To the king of Spargus," the second monk softly corrected him, cutting off the rest of the words traditionally spoken as the young man sucked in a desperate gasp of air. "It is you who has chosen to forego the First Trial to give him his birth-by-water early. His fate is solely in your hands, my lord."
Damas snarled softly. "There was no need for it to be so," he reproached.
Emotionlessly, he hauled the Foundling from the pools and dropped him back onto the pallet.
"Heal him."
"Of course, my lord," the monk murmured. "As he is now part of your household, do you consent to the use of city eco to treat your Foundling?"
"Don't call him that." Damas turned away to retrieve his staff.
"It is what he is," Rhys observed placidly. "As you are his Finder-"
"I didn't ask to find the whelp," Damas hissed, "None of you were going to give him his rites!"
He marched past his throne, towards the exit of the chamber, stonefaced.
"Put him back in the water until one of you returns with the eco. Inform me if he recovers."
Between the monks, Jak lay on the pallet and stared at the ceiling with wide, glassy eyes.
If anyone had been paying attention, they would have seen his pupils dilate unnaturally wide.

i'm taking the jlpt this sunday and had a stress dream last night abt it bc it sort of snuck up on me and now it's kind of a question of how much my actual japanese abilities will carry me (versus if i should've been cramming on flashcards this past month) but the listening portion is far simpler conversation than my coworkers and i have so. i think that maybe instead of "damn i should've been studying japanese" my perspective should just be "i speak japanese"
#a key part of the dream though was that i failed because i went on a motorcycle joyride during the 40 minute break and didn't make it back#in time for the listening section. the prompt for the listening section btw was to write an essay in english about kirishima eijirou#so i was like damn i would've totally passed#anyway hashtag classic maya but idk#i think i have a bit of a complex abt it bc i was studying for n1 (highest level) in college#but w the switch to online learning we stopped studying the stuff i really needed to work on (vocab and kanji)#and whatever kanji i knew how to write went out the window bc i never had to turn in written homework again#so i really let myself go there for a good two years but since moving last summer i've not only been having japanese conversations every da#i've also actually been studying kanji in my downtime at work#so i have picked up most of the study guide-type information just really slowly over time#i read a ton of manga in japanese lately and most shows on netflix here don't have eng subtitles but i'm fine without them 95% of the time#with the genre of shows i watch at least#so i've been thinking a lot lately abt what my end goal is w japanese studies because 'be able to consume all the art i want' feels like#a good place to be#i do think in the end the only thing between me and n1 is a lot of genuine hard work studying vocab and kanji and reading serious articles#so i feel like all 'sekkaku da shi' i've made it this far why would i just stop working at this point#those are just my thoughts though aaaa i know reading/vocab/grammar section is way more hit or miss#personal

Sometimes I read an older book and think to myself "gee it's good I never read this as a kid" because little eight year old me devouring books that were half a century old and using vocab words from them to assert dominance definitely would not have realized that words like "faggot" are no longer used to denote a bundle of sticks.

Short list of words that don’t mean exactly what I thought they did/what the dictionary says
評価する hyouka suru
So the given definition is to evaluate something, but it seems like it frequently means to evaluate positively, like that “get a good grade in” meme. If something’s been hyouka-ed and a result isn’t stated, it’s probably been found to be favorable.
改めて aratamete
The jury’s still out on this one as far as I’m concerned, but… I always thought it meant “once again”, but I’ve also seen people say it means “formally”. There are situations in which it could mean both those things, like 改めて紹介します allow me to formally introduce (something/someone) [as opposed to the audience previously non-formal knowledge of the thing], but I might just be wrong about this one.
卑怯 hikyou
So this one has both meanings I’m going to mention, I just didn’t know about one of them, whereas I heard from someone who seemed to only know about the other one. I always thought it meant cowardly, but it seems like it can mean underhanded (as in cheating) as well. Still have to keep my eye on this one too.

Thanks for the Ask! [Current Ask game]
5. Is there any fic that makes you super happy to reread and remember you wrote that?
Definitely "You'll Never Know" (the one about Foop and Anti-Wanda struggling with politics for 77,777 years after Anti-Cosmo's mysterious disappearance). I loved getting into Foop's head for this one. It's one of my favorites and I've reread it a bunch of times.
This is the piece I'd love to show outsiders to demonstrate what I write and how fanfiction is so much more than just quick fluff or smut [Not that those things are wrong, this is just a piece that doesn't fit in those categories]. When I actually tried reading it as though I were an outsider, however, I realized how many little bits and pieces of it require you to have decent knowledge of the series and worldbuilding :'D
But it's still one I'd love to share with outsiders who were willing to play along. It's just haunting and beautiful to me. It's very raw and painful for Foop and he's the most unreliable narrator in the world, and I love him.
This is the style that I love 'fics in: introspective, long, a bit meandering in places, that nice blend of creation and destruction, growth and failure, angst and pain and fluff and sweetness and agony and childhood and emotions and logic... and then it just whips you across the forehead at the end like "... Oh. OH!!"
Definitely a huge personal favorite. I also love "All I Ever Wanted" for similar reasons, because it's just... /gestures at that painful conversation when Anti-Marigold tells him he could never understand what she's going through and Poof just... yeah. And then... you know........ YEAH.
I have several fics of mine I cycle between to read when I'm out on trips or waiting in long lines. On that list, we definitely have:
"Watch and Learn"
"Temptation"
"You'll Never Know"
"All I Ever Wanted"
"This Is a Box"
"Whatever"
"Shadow"
"Think Positive"
"Trying Too Hard"
"Minion"
"Repeat"
"Yellow Flower Number 9"
"Health Bars"
"Golden Rules"
"Turning Scarlett"
"Six Shades of Gray"
"Precious"
"How to Get Ahead In Navigating"
"AlgoRhythm"
Long? Tension and drama? Little gut punches here and there? They all pass the Vibe Check and I love them.

32. Who’s the one character who shines without you even trying?
I've heard very good things about my Sanderson! He seems to consistently be the fan favorite, especially in Origin of the Pixies, and I love that for him <3 I'm very glad because when I look at him and then look at his canon portrayal, I sometimes feel like I've gone too far with him... but people seem to like him a lot and I do too. He's stubbornly one of my favorites.
H.P., Poof, and Foop are very easy for me to write and I don't struggle with their inner or external dialogue at all. I was also surprised that Finley turned out to be one of the easiest characters I've ever written- you'll get to see a snippet of his POV in the upcoming 130 Prompt "I Just Live Here." I'm thrilled with how it came out... You can definitely see the H.P. showing through him. Little miscreant clone...
H.P. has this very dry and choppy way of speaking. He delivers these crisp, demanding sentences with a habit of deflecting blame and responsibility. He's cool, calculating, and honest... in a lying sort of way, because he's lying to himself all the time. Anti-Cosmo has this much more meandering way of speaking, edged by paranoia and second guessing himself.
Foop is a mix of both of them. He'll ramble on and throw in a lot of big words, then he'll veer sideways and throw in some super short sentences (usually childish ones like "Oh, please!" or "Super lame!" with exclamation points). Poof is a laid-back suburban kid. He gets defensive sometimes, but he's pretty chill. He's big on "Hey" and "Okay" and compromise.
(My secret hot take is that Foop and Cosmo actually have the same High Intelligence, High Charisma, and Low Wisdom scores but Foop's lived his life getting praised as a genius and exposed to literature and tutoring from his father and therapy, so he perceives himself as a genius, but Cosmo gets deprived of books and told he's a moron [see also, his deepest darkest secret being that he's an author, implying he doesn't like letting on that he actually CAN do things on his own and be successful], so he perceives himself as a moron even though they're... they're the same guy. Cosmo's more quippy while Foop is long-winded, but they're so much alike.)
---
45. If you had to call yourself an author of a single genre (besides fanfic) what label would you give yourself?
Contemporary fantasy / magical realism. I like my magic very grounded and I like people to do regular things. Go on adventures? Are you nuts?? We've got dinner to cook and a family to raise, and HECK, my friend the prince is coming over soon!
My vibe is office politics / suburban politics / small town drama, but there's magic involved and fighting with magic is legal so it's, like... scary. But in a very soft, controlled, and localized way. You can still get your life flipped upside-down and lose everything you love, but at least you're not on a cross-country quest!

I’m either doing this completely right or completely wrong and I have no idea which it is
#maybe applying to an esol job when i haven’t taught esol in 3 years and honestly wasn’t even good at it back then was not the move#they have given me the vaguest prompt in the world for my presentation/microteach and i don’t even know if i’ll be presenting to actual#students or to the panel. not that it really makes a difference either way as i think i’ll be doing the same shit regardless#but AAAHHHHHHHHH#i also have no concept anymore of how anything takes. i’ve spent the past year teaching gcse english in 3 hour blocks#i just plan about ten thousand things per week and assume that reasonably we’re probably going to get through four of them#i don’t know if what i’m planning to do here will take the 30 minutes i’ve been given or 2 hours#i also don’t know if a powerpoint is the move?? i never had powerpoints at my old tefl school#i went in there with a whiteboard marker; my brain; a stack of worksheets and maybe a crossword or a fun video if i was lucky#oh GOD or one of those godawful old cds they used to have us use for the listening activities lol. they were the worst#… maybe i should plan this as one of my oldschool whiteboard-only lessons. is that more or less impressive than making a powerpoint?#they seem to be expecting a presentation but it goes against everything i know#like the people who trained me drilled it into my head ‘do NOT write the vocabulary word until they’ve got the pronunciation down’#and also ‘do NOT let them know at the start of the lesson whether it’s going to be a speaking or writing lesson bc they Will shut down#if it’s the one they don’t like’#but then my pgce is like ‘you need aims and objectives in your powerpoint or we will kill you :)’#WHAT DO I DOOOOOO#i mean; what makes sense to me is to structure it as a recap of lexis/vocab. 4 words; let’s recap our spelling and pronunciation#and make sure we can differentiate between them#then focus the rest of the session on life skills and logistics and end it with a discussion#but i don’t have a fucking clue#before you say ‘do what you’re most comfortable with!’ my brother in christ i am not comfortable with Any Of This#i’m feeling like i should turn down the interview because honestly i am so lost with this. i don’t see how they can hire me#i’m way too stubborn though and my toxic trait is that i think i’m capable of absolutely anything#yes i’m insecure as hell yes i think i’m the god of this world. we exist#personal
