Magnum Task
TASK 1
The Magnum Photo Agency is a co-operative, meaning it is both owned and ran by its own members. Its Members are Photographers whose work is centred around photojournalism - photography that is centred around capturing real people, events and issues.
The Agency was founded in Paris in 1947 by Robert Capa, who came up with the idea of forming one of the first co-operatives for photographers, David "Chim" Seymour, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and William Vandivert - all of whom were prominent war, street, and photojournalism photographers at the time.
The Agency is still present today, and every year at the end of June the members meet to discuss the agencies affairs. It is also at this this time that they can invite along new photographers who want to join and interview them alongside a portfolio of their work. There are three membership levels - "nominee", "associate" and "full", a new nominee member is welcome to apply for each membership by providing a portfolio at two year intervals - this allows the members to get to know them better on a more in depth way. Associate and full members enjoy the well equipped facilities owned by the agency, as well as worldwide representation, which is an amazing way to promote their work.
TASK 2
Alex Webb
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Webb is an American street Photographer. Most well known for his immersive and beautiful colour photographs, his subject matter has taken him around the world, particularly to places where there are social and political tension. He documents these events and places with images that hold a certain ambiguity, encouraging the viewer to ask questions rather than give them answers - which is why I think they do well as street photographs to convey these real life issues and raise awareness.
Becoming a magnum nominee at only 22 years old in 1974, Webb went on to work for numerous well-renowned photojournalism magazines - including The New York Times and National Geographic. With the experience and facilities these magazines offered he would build up an impressive body of work over the next couple years, resulting in him becoming a full member in 1979.
Olivia Arthur
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arthur is a British photographer currently based in London, who much like Webb, finds the ambiguity of her photos as being one of the key things that makes them effective. After Studying Photojournalism at the London College of Printing, she travelled to India in 2003 where she would quickly cement herself as a photographer that deals with quite sensitive and personal subject matter (particularly from a female stand point and in different cultures) such as representation and sexuality. This is clear to see in her work where she captures the emotions of her subjects very well and I feel those emotions are reflected back by the viewer.
Her work from between 2003 right up to her photos captured in Mumbai in 2018 have been featured in a multitude of publications such as VOGUE and TIME. And in 2010, she cofounded Fishbar - a publication and gallery space in east London, helping other visual artists to flourish. She then became a full member of Magnum in 2013.

Gender
The spring/summer 2018 menswear shows are a prime example of the fashion industry shifting towards a gender-fluid space where skirts are not female wardrobe staples, but a garment to be worn-and enjoyed-by all. In Paris, Thom Browne sent an army of models down the runway in grey pleated skirts that aptly chimed with the newly adopted uniform of the boys in Exeter. At London Collections:Men the skirt offering expanded into highly elaborate dresses at Vivienne Westwood, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy and Edward Crutchley.
Spring 2016 saw Zara launch a 16-piece collection of unisex items, titled “Ungendered”, with males and females modelling all pieces in the campaign images. Selfridges’ concept space “Agender” - a “unique genderless shopping experience across fashion, accessories and beauty” - moves away from a separate “his” and “hers” experience across all brand levels. And ASOS is currently working towards a genderless style offering following the success of ASOS influencers wearing items purchased from both menswear and womenswear lines.
Theodora “Teddy” Quinlivan
Tumblr media
Teddy Quinlivan was discovered by Louis Vuitton’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquière in 2015, and came out as transgender two years later. She has since taken the modelling world by storm, with a résumé that includes Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Moschino, Haider Ackermann, Paco Rabanne, and Jeremy Scott.
Nathan Westling
Tumblr media
Nathan has previously starred in many major campaigns for designer brands including Dior and Louis Vuitton. In March (two months into his transition), he opened up about the process to CNN Style. When asked about how he saw the future of his career expanding, Nathan told the outlet, “We’ll have to see how this story takes to fashion and how everything takes. I’m not worried about it. I think it’s going to be a good change and I’m excited for it. I’m really, really excited.”
He added, “It’s been an incredible journey, it’s been an incredible process and I’m just really happy to be on this path, and at such a young age, too. That’s such a blessing.”
Vogue reports that Nathan will walk in a handle of more runway shows throughout the month of June as men’s fashion weeks continue internationally.
Noah Carlos
Tumblr media
Noah Carlos identifies as a gender non-binary model. Carlos was offered a modelling contract with IMG. Carlos has strutted across quite a few fall catwalks, including Coach, Rick Owens and Self Portrait, and is continually advocating for more non-binary casting on the runways.
Zaïr Cheseaux
Tumblr media
The 22-year-old Swiss-Congolese model, who recently transitioned to male, was brought up outside the medieval town of Sion in Switzerland and made his first appearance for KNWLS in 2019. He has since made waves for Richard Quinn. His career highlight was AW22, when he walked for brands such as Hermès, Balmain, Loewe, Stella McCartney, Vetements and Acne Studios. “There’s something unique about Zaïr,” says Ben Grimes. “And it’s not about beauty or proportion, it’s about presence. He’s unabashedly himself.”

Pop Culture and Excess 1980’s
My favorite decade is pop culture and excess, the 1980’s. I first got introduced to this era by watching one of my favorite television shows, Pose. Pose sets in the 1980s, showcasing LGBTQ stories in New York like ball culture and the rise of luxury. In the 80s LGBTQ ballroom house members would compete in balls where they compete in different categories. LGBTQ Ballroom culture is a whole new world to dive into. In Paris is Burning, a 1990s LGBT film, shows the real lives of the iconic houses and the obstacles they faced. These icons used Ballroom/ art as an escape from the real world into the luxurious world of fashion. The ballroom scene was rooted in fashion, influenced by the lifestyles, and poses of models or actors in Vogue magazine. According to the author, of The Dynamic of Fashion, “Flashdance, which caused thousands of young women to don dancers’ leg warmers and off-the-shoulder tops.” Dance was such a big influence that dance clothing was used daily. This is also reflected in the start of the ballroom. The dance Vouge started from poses of fashion magazine models. People would compete against each other to see who has the fiercest voguing style. Pose and Paris is Burning both showcase vogue fem, and many other categories like runway, face, realness with a twist, and sex siren. LGBTQ Community had such an impact in the ’80s, a writer from An other magazine states, “Mugler cast transgender models in his runway shows in the 1980s and made it his mission to collaborate with drag artists and other members of the LGBTQ community throughout his career.” Thierry Mugler understands that LGBT artists deserve a voice in fashion and many other art forms. I did not realize how much this decade has influenced my life until now.

Another turn of the knife for Meghan re: Dior... by u/Chasmosaur
Another turn of the knife for Meghan, re: Dior... So between the statement that opened the Telegraph article yesterday about the connection of the BRF and Dior...A source at the French fashion house has denied rumours of an imminent deal, telling The Telegraph that reports crowning a new “Duchess of Dior” have left the team in Paris "nonplussed as to how the story came about"....and [the royal-covering/tennis-loving Instagrammer who prefers to not be directly named] stating in her IG stories that one of her "highly reliable" sources (which do seem to be generally reliable) that...Meghan embodies everything Delphine (Arnault, CEO of Dior) detests in a person. Delphine's aesthetic is more in line with Kate rather than Meghan....all I can think is that it had to hurt seeing these images on Emma Watson's Instagram two days ago.Screenshot of Emma Watson's Instagram account, showing images of her modeling for Prada Beauty.Because she partnered with Prada Beauty to model these looks on her Instagram. (Why her IG instead of theirs? She has waaaaaay more followers and she tagged them - probably worked better that way, and I'm sure she also has enough clout to control the images in the way she chooses.) We all know how much Meghan aspired to *be* Emma Watson, as far as her fame and placement as a famed women's rights activist, so to see these images so casually thrown up and getting positive press coverage without much effort? Had to hurt. (I mean, I'm "meh" on the clothes but the fact she has the kind of power she still has to promote brands, even though she hasn't acted in several years and has apparently just been quietly living her best life.)While Meghan didn't wear Prada clothes often - it looks like she wore them in 2018 in one of her earlier engagements [June 26, 2018, Vogue, "Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Wears Prada to the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards Ceremony" Archive Link | Original Link ] - she has been seen carrying several different Prada bags over the years, so clearly, it's a brand she likes.[April 25, 2023, Daily Express, "Meghan wore a Prada bag from her £‎10,000 collection to watch the Lakers" Archive Link | Oriignal Link]Of course, she wouldn't have been allowed to actually rep Prada like this as a working royal, but I bet she thought houses would be lining up to offer her deals like these post-Megxit. Guess Hermione was always going to be the safer option with her more wholesome reputation, especially with her 72 million Instagram followers, still about 7 times what Sussex Royal had, and about 3x what the Wales' have...https://ift.tt/pPNCcdm post link: https://ift.tt/T1KXnWx author: Chasmosaur submitted: June 20, 2023 at 05:38PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit
