Prompt: Voiceless

“Stop! You are arrested in the name of the Navy!” Tashigi yelled or at least she had intended to yell after the fleeing criminal. What came out instead was an almost inaudible and sad croak.

Stupid cold. Tashigi thought and stopped running. 

She was completely out of breath. Totally understandable given she felt the sickest she had ever been in years. But totally not acceptable for her own pride. But sadly she had to let that thief go.

Her heart was racing, her sides stung like she had just ran a marathon, when in reality it hasn’t even been a quarter of a mile, every breath hurt her lungs and honestly Tashigi suspected that she had a fever too. 

She should’ve not left the bed this morning but her stupid sense of duty made her. So, she had gone for a patrol and of course she had gone alone. Stupid pride. Stupid cold. 

Tashigi had no idea where she caught that cold but it came at an inconvenient time. 

Suddenly feeling dizzy she braced herself against the wall of the building next to her. Breathing was getting harder and Tashigi realized she needed…

“Help!” She tried to get out but once again, to no avail. Her voice was gone and she felt the faint coming. Tashigi blacked out before her body hit the ground.

She woke up with a pounding headache and her mouth felt fuzzy while her throat was dry. But the warmth of her soft blanket and cushion led her to the decision to stay in bed for a bit longer. Just a few more minutes, she told herself.

Those few minutes however gave her brain enough time to remember what had happened before she’d fallen asleep or more like before she had fainted on the street. 

So, how did she get back into her bed? Or any bed for that matter.

Tashigi opened her eyes and wasted no time to take in her surroundings. A table, a chair, a fireplace with a fire burning, a door, a window, the bed obviously; nothing out of the ordinary so far.

But also no clues of how she had gotten here. 

Lost in contemplation, she got rid of the blanket, swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up. All while realizing she had on some weird patterned PJs. 

At least… she tried to stand up. Hit by dizziness, Tashigi stumbled over her own feet, lost her grip and fell forwards. Right onto… a very muscular chest. 

“You shouldn’t get up so soon. Your fever just went down.”

With being so close to the speaker, Tashigi felt every vibration of his voice on her cheeks. And this voice belonged to no other than… Roronoa Zoro.

Gently, he placed her on the bed again and then he kneeled down in front of her, locking eye(s) with her. Tashigi was too stunned to speak. Well that and her throat was way too dry anyway. 

The pirate seemed to sense that and reached over to the bedside table to give her some water. The liquid running down her throat felt heavenly. She emptied the water and tried to speak, still no sounds came out. Roronoa smirked.

“Chopper said, your voice will be gone for the next couple of days.”

Tashigi furrowed her brows. Lovely. 

But since Chopper seemed to be around too, that probably meant the whole Strawhat Crew was on the island… and the Navy had no clue. 

“What were you doing out and about anyway? With being that sick?”

Did the pirate just scold? 

“Don’t pull that face at me! I was the one getting your sick and stupid ass back to bed. Which you shouldn’t have left to begin with.”

He was right though, not that she would ever openly say that, ever. Aside from not being able to say anything at the moment anyway. 

All together it was one of the weirdest situations she’d ever been in. Granted, it wasn’t the first time Roronoa… rescued her (damn, it hurt to admit that), but it was the first time he stayed long enough to check up on her. That was the most irritating thing ever.

Him being here, when she woke up. Kinda like he… cared about her. 

“You know, Glasses,” Roronoa said and made her look at him again, “You being voiceless is something I could get used to. It's nice.”

Tashigi’s face hardened, so much for caring about her. 

She still felt weak, nevertheless she bawled her fist and slightly punched his should; enticing a laugh out of him.
