Lesson 01: Failure is your friend
One of the first lessons I always teach my students, and something I absolutely wish I had learned earlier in life is the art of failure.
As singers we will, and should fail. Multiple times. As often as possible really. The best way to learn is to fail. In my personal opinion, I think that the voice is one of the hardest instruments to learn and I have learned many.
What makes the voice such a hard instrument is that you can’t see it. It takes time and practice to learn how to manipulate the voice. Like whistling, winking, moving your ears on command very few people are born just knowing how to manipulate their vocal folds. Most of us have to take lots of time and practice to learn how to manipulate our vocal folds to produce the sounds we want in the way we want them. For example if I was in a lesson with a very seasoned singer and I told them, “careful you’re lowering your larynx because you’re reaching for that note, make sure we’re approaching that note with our larynx in a more neutral position.” They would most likely understand what I was saying and also know how to fix it, however if I told that to a new student they would be clueless!
Taking the time to learn how the anatomy of our voice actually works is a lengthy task, and learning how to make purposeful manipulations of said anatomy is an even longer process! Learning how to manipulate the vocal folds and larynx is a very tedious trial and error process, which is why failure is key! Sometimes it’s easier to know what doesn’t work and know how you did the thing that doesn’t work. Think of it like a game of Clue, it’s much more helpful to have 50 options to slowly go through and cross off what doesn’t work and move on from there than to take a bunch of random shots in the dark and hope you hit gold, because even if you do accidentally get it right, odds are you won’t know what you did to get what you wanted. Trial and error.
It all sounds great in theory, the hard part is putting it into practice. It can be intensely discouraging to work on a song for a month and still struggle through that one section because you just can’t seem to nail that transition into less resistant thinner folds without cracking out. It takes time, reassurance and a calm cool head. Which is why I tell my students often fail as much as you can and focus on what that failure feels like. Not mentally, I don’t want them, or anyone, to focus on what it feels like to mentally fail but focus on what it feels like physically. If you were manipulating a vowel and the note didn’t sound how you wanted it to, before you go to try again sit and chew on that vowel for a moment. Think about what you did last time, how it felt and what was wrong about it. Was it a little flat? Maybe add a little brightness into your vocal color. Was it a little sharp? Maybe darken up a touch. I like to use the analogy that singing, especially early on when we’re still learning how to use the voice is like learning how to mix paint when you’re just starting out you need to carefully bit by bit add a drop of red to your yellow to get that perfect shade of orange. If you add too much you’ll over shoot and it’ll flop the other direction. It’s a long, slow process until you finally get what you want, but, eventually you’ll get used to the feeling and like any other part of your body the shapes you make to produce the sounds you as an artist are looking to produce will become muscle memory. As your body learns and remembers these shapes and feelings it will become easier and quicker to replicate until it becomes almost second nature. Trial and error, trial and error, trial and error. When you feel discouraged, remind yourself why you’re singing in the first place!
Best wishes! Keep on failing!
-Brandon
