HAN’S INFODUMPING ABOUT JAY... START!!!!

so like sgdkdhdkdhd I say Jay and Lloyd are my “favorites” but honestly it’s so hard to pick favorites out of this skittles squad like I love EVERY character for a variety of different reasons. I was going to also infodump about Lloyd but then I started talking about Prime Empire and then this post got. Long. So. it's just Jay I may infodump about Lloyd another day especially since I'm very Conduit Brained Rn but yea yea!

this is long so i'm putting most of it under the cut so y'all don't kill me for making a huge long post

I considered putting Zane and Sora on here as well since I’d also consider them my “favs” but like this is already gonna be. A lot of. Infodumping (also i typed THIS part before I even started and decided not to yell about Lloyd because this already got long enough). Maybe I’ll make a separate post for those two hmm hmm much to consider but for now MY (technically) FAVORITE NINJAGO CHARACTER: JAY WALKER

so hey his name is a pun this makes me laugh ridiculously hard every time I remember he is named. After a misdemeanor HSKSHDKFH

Jay is such an interesting case of a character for me because I started out the show not liking him. Which is. Stares at my entire account I think my feelings have changed somewhat

Jay starts out as an asshole I don’t think anyone can disagree with me there (although honestly they’re all assholes in early ninjago they bullied a ten year old and left him dangling several feet off the ground) but over the course of the show you can see him start developing into a much more interesting character. He goes from being so insecure he's faking everything about himself to someone who knows who he is and is so genuine about it

now yea we could argue about whether his character was too uwu-ified post-season 10 but this is the FUN HAN POST SO WE'RE NOT GONNA TALK ABOUT THAT the point is you can SEE the growth that Jay has gone through and I am going to show you that growth through what I call

✨ The Skybound to Prime Empire Effect ✨

I AM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THE IDEA THAT PRIME EMPIRE WAS WRITTEN TO BE A DIRECT PARALLEL OF SKYBOUND AND WAS CENTERED ON SHOWING HOW THE NINJA ESPECIALLY JAY HAVE GROWN THROUGHOUT THE SEASON

when season 12 rolls around we are at the point in Jay's development where he is CONFIDENT in who he is. He's a fun-loving jokester with the power of lightning and the drive to help people whenever he can. He uses jokes and humor to help alleviate tension and get people through whatever's happening. And when on his own what does he do?

BECOME AN ENTERTAINER BABEY

i like to think jay's club in prime empire was a safe haven for anyone stuck in the game who figured out hey. we Can't Leave and felt freaked about it. Also Jay would generally try and spread the word that hey something ISN'T RIGHT HERE which would lead people to want to stay with him

(totally plugging my friend's fic but this kind of thing is explored in would you like to enter prime empire by @finn-m-corvex y'all should check it out cool cool)

also the prime empire shorts which i watched all of in the midst of typing this video cuz i love them go watch them please please please jay was publically fighting the red visors which I imagine may have raised some red flags for some players

THIS SOMEHOW TURNED INTO PRIME EMPIRE INFODUMPING LMAO ANYWAYS Jay's confident! He becomes an entertainer because it's who he knows he is! And it's something that will get people hyped and having fun, which is very in-character for Jay to do! He uses those kinds of things to mask the Bad Things going on and get people remembering what's good

I've talked about this sort of thing before but that's Jay's whole philosophy as early as season 9! Which is a DIRECT contrast to how he views it in season 6, as Nadakhan puts it scarily accurately

"You make jokes to mask the fact that you're afraid"

(i was gonna grab a screenshot for that like i did with the hunted scene but netflix has bloCKED THE ABILITY TO TAKE SCREENSHOTS THE WAY I USED TO and i don't have them already and i'm too lazy to grab them from elsewhere so alas trust me he says it)

making jokes to hide your fear and using humor to remind yourself of what's good and coping with the bad are two VERY different outlooks on it

so I think this outlook is what drives him to make this glamrock persona in the first place - this is a bad situation, one he's in with other civilians, and what better way to keep him and themself safe until the others get there than throwing a big performance at a safe place!

also it's just so gender okay I want to look like Superstar Rockin' Jay so badly

it's also interesting to see his outlook on his parents change over time! In season six he finds out Ed and Edna aren't his birth parents and feels upset about it, not understanding why his birth parents would've abandoned him. In season twelve, that outlook changing is EXACTLY why Jay's able to get through to Unagami

"I was abandoned by my parents, too!... I never understood why, and I never had the chance to even ask. But I always hoped there was a good reason. What if there's a reason?"

(again curse you netflix i wanted SCREENSHOTS whatever whatever)

It's this scene that gets Unagami to calm down long enough for Milton Dyer to get there, and presumably is what stops him from just. Flattening him and Jay like a pancake.

to piggyback off of this i absolutely adore how Unagami and Jay consider each other adopted brothers in that one book I still haven't read and I hope he's in Dragons Rising at some point Unagami is my favorite "villain" (no longer a villain) in the whole show he deserves more screentime

like this is where i found out about this and it's plagued my mind ever since. i need to read. this book just for them

SO YEA OKAY Prime Empire is "Who is Jay as a Person Post-Skybound" to me also it opens up so many fascinating things about Jay. I rest my case

so backpedaling a little bit. JAY CARES SO MUCH ABOUT HIS PARENTS GUYS IT'S SO SOFT AND I'M sobs

like yea the first episode with Ed and Edna in it has Jay avoiding them like the plague but this gets explained very easily when you remember he was bullied for his home life before he became a ninja. It makes a lot more sense why he wouldn't want them around his new friends, assuming they'd react the same way. Also how was he supposed to know literally all the rest of the groups parents were either dead, presumed dead, or had a toxic relationship with their kid lmao

(Cole calling his mom kills me. Cole's mom is dead. I know they probably just didn't think that far ahead when writing the dialogue but it's so funny mans pretended to call his dead mom to get on Jay for not appreciating his parents iconic behavior)

anyways literally every episode Ed and Edna are central to (except like the one in skybound) Jay stops at nothing to protect his parents and it means the absolute world to me he's so much like them!! They raised an inventive little nerd and he will stop at nothing to make sure they're safe and it's. It's SO IMPORTANT TO ME OKAY

ALSO this is an excuse to clip my favorite piece of dialogue possibly in the entire show. Except Netflix won't let me now. So you just get the text dialogue

Jay's just fallen from the sky with a messed up eye and is incredibly distraught that all his friends are captured. And his dad just. The woRLD IS FALLING APART AND HE'S EATIN' SOUP-

I'm glad you guys are liking this au so much!! I'll try to answer as best i can, we have so much going on here

There are a lot of reasons Harumi wants Lloyd's true form out. The main reason is she wants to use him, yes. She thinks that if she can get Lloyd to show his "true self", she can use it to get close to Garmadon. She also believes Lloyd's oni form is his "true self" and that every other form is just holding him back. She also plans to use this form to control him and use him for her own gains.

As for how Chen got away with painting Kai as the bad guy? Well, when the entire city hates a person its pretty easy to spin a story to get out of consequences. Since Kai was trying to help Lloyd, that animosity spread to him. Everyone hates little Garmadon, and since Kai was helping him, they hate him too.

Just thinking about Lloyd as the Quiet One

He was tossed aside and forgotten about so long ago he doesn't recall a time anyone ever thought of him. This boy needed love or at the very least attention, his father was evil surely there was something he could do to stand out. Something this lost child could do earn his fathers love.

He raised an army that tossed him aside. He fought the chosen ninja and that should have been his moment in the history books. It was never meant to be, he thinks. Watching from the shadows as a girl his age just as sad and broken as he, was brought into his uncle's home and given the keys to destiny itself. This girl fought his father and broke Garmadon free from the dark whisper on the blackest night, better known as The Overlord. She even cured him, though not completely. Garmadon's memories under the venom's influence flash in his mind like a dream. He remembers a woman, a father, a child, and a fight that sent him to another world but nothing is clear. And he can't remember their names. Surely if he can't recall the names of people he vaguely dreamed of loving, they must not have been important.

It must have been a dream.

The forgotten son gives himself a new name. The Quiet One, you don't see him until it's over. His hands leaves their mark on his victims and his enemies that don't know they are enemies. Yet no one has seen his face. His influence in the world is gentle nudge, things just just needed something small and forgettable to add to the pot and cause it to boil over. The Quiet One made a list of all the people who wronged him. All the people who had forgotten him.

At this point, it shouldn't have surprised him when no one recognized him. When he screamed into the void "Look at me!" and no one answered. When his father died, and his mother after having disappeared all those years came to the funeral, no one bothered to call him. His own mother passed this forgotten child waiting by the statues in the Corridor of Elders, for just a moment to look into her eyes. But she didn't see him, a polite nod acknowledging the presence of this stranger and proving he wasn't a ghost. His dreams of reunification were crushed to dust as he was overlooked by the one person in the world who was meant to love him.

It didn't surprise him when no one in their wildest imaginations or forgotten dreams guessed that it was him. The welp from the serpentine attacks could never have grown to be so dangerous. Surely if he were evil the ninja, his mother, or anyone would have noticed. In the depths of the faintest recollections this child was harmless so why worry.

Years later, a leather and blood bound faction that call themselves the Sons of Garmadon terrorize Ninjago City. They disgraced his memory with a dark promise to disturb the eternal peace of the beloved Sensei Garmadon as an evil husk to destroy Ninjago. And not a soul, not a one could understand why.

With the rattle of heavy chains, a red lollipop, and an evil laugh they've long forgotten about, they suddenly remember.

A boy with no home, no family, and no love left in his heart. A boy who's goal is to punish everyone for daring to forget his name

The Son of Garmadon.

Okay, this has been bothering me, and I'm gonna go into it, cuz I feel like being mad that the fandom didn't get better is friggin valid, so imma get negative here at some serious missed potential, if that's not your jam, 100% get it, please scroll past.

We have a season with 20 episodes, each of which are 20 minutes long. That is an unprecedented amount of time for a ninjago season- I would argue maybe too much time, but that's not what we're getting into here. Even just the first half is the length of your standard ninjago season back in the day. There is no excuse for not taking your time with ideas that deserve time. You've got time. You've got too much time.

If you're gonna do a mystical mind prison that traps you in your worst fears, you gotta do it! You can't do this wimpy half commit thing you're doing here. What is this cop out that's like three minutes long? This is a top tier trope! Loads of stories do this- for a good reason, it's a great way to get lots of new insight into your characters, not to mention have fun with environments, hypotheticals, bend logic, and do some creative filmmaking. And here you are, inventing a whole weird fictional animal to facilitate your nightmare state, and it legitimately takes up so little screen time that it hurts! What? Did you not have enough to say about your characters to fill out a full subplot? You thinking that surface level about things? Or was the basketball tournament fake out with the dragons so important to the story that you couldn't cut it out for some character introspection?

It's so short and pointless, it doesn't functionally do anything except tell us very directly "Here's what this character fears, and will have to get past this season!" No looking into why or making some progress/losing progress on the issue in the dream state. We don't even get to see everyone's visions, let alone see any interconnectivity between them. It's just such a waste of a classically exciting set up. And why on earth would you place this concept at the beginning of the season? Put it at the turning point man! That's what this scenario is made for! Literalizing characters overcoming mental challenges so that it's interesting to watch! Using the nightmare dream sphere for exposition in the most boring possible version of the trope is just dumbfounding.

I mean seriously? The black void? That's all you've got? You gonna go the Cars 2 route and set our supposedly deep nightmare sequence in a black void? No symbolism to the void even? No distorting of visuals within the void? Nothing? Can you get any more basic? Did you really put that little creativity into this? Like, the whole point of the nightmare dreamscape is to get creative! So much symbolism and messaging that you can easily tie into things! the possibilities are literally endless! But yeah, I guess Arin running in place is pretty meaningful too, I'm sure it took you a while to come up with something so profound.

There's a reason this story beat usually makes up at least half the plot of any given episode it's in! There's so much room to explore. The potential for crosscutting between nightmares is so high, drawing parallels between characters. Maybe they're all interconnected, and the mentally strongest of the team breaks free to help the others in their nightmares. Maybe it's a revelation point for the rest of the team as they see a dark past of another character they didn't know about. Or maybe it's just the audience who gets new insight into a sheltered corner of a character's mind, or a way to reveal to them a dark secret someone is hiding. You can also have fun subverting expectations, maybe one of the nightmares is just objectively pretty funny. And, the best thing about any dream environment you're creating, you can have the characters get involved in insanely creative fights and action scenes where they literally beat up their mental roadblocks with cool looking and symbolically important powers or tools.

Like, I know the fandom is losing their mind over this scene because 'omg Nya's gonna be so sad cuz of the memory loss(that hasn't even been revealed in narrative yet, so the irony doesn't even really work)' but I just need you to understand that the full fledged angst, character growth, and introspection y'all are speculating could have theoretically happened in Kai's plot is what we could have had for everyone. For a full episode. Like it deserved to be. And it would have been really cool, and really satisfying, and beautifully and symbolically stunning, because countless other people have done it, it's honestly not too difficult. Stop freaking out like they did a good job with this- they didn't do a good job with this. They couldn't even bother to give everyone a vision, they just gave up on the concept halfway through.

Not to mention how accessible and valuable this type of storytelling is to kids! Literalizing some of the big abstract issues these characters are supposedly battling this season would be a great way to get kids to grasp these ideas, but instead it's literally like two and a half minutes of slightly ominous stuff to bate us before we move on.

Stop teasing us with interesting stuff and then not actually following through! This is not how you do storytelling!

Ninjago the Fire Chapter sucks ass

Currently thinking about how absolutely atrocious Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitsu is as a season. It handles the ninja's characters SO HORENDOUSLY that it's like the writers completely scrapped all of their initial character traits. Specifically, I'm talking about the first few episodes, where the ninja had forgotten how to work as a team.

During the Oni Trilogy, the ninja: 4 of them were were zapped to another dimension (where Jay literally went crazy) and they forced to raise their lost mentor who had become a child, Lloyd was betrayed by his crush and believed his 4 best friends were dead for a good month and forced to fight and then WORK WITH his father, Cole fell into the Oni void and almost froze to death, (and didn't even break a few bones??? Like fucking HOW??? anyway) Nya believed she was the cause of Cole's death, and she, Kai, Jay, and Zane thought that a teammate was dead -- three times.

And then, after the Oni are defeated, what do they do? They SIT AT THE MONASTARY AND PLAY VIDEO GAMES. DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW INCREDIBLY UNREALISTIC THIS IS.

If I know these characters, (and, having watched the show multiple times over since I was eight, I think I do) this is 10000000% not how they would react. Cole, Kai, and Nya have an ongoing fear of being useless- why would they choose not to train? Zane has a principle of protecting those who cannot protect themselves- why would he not practice to be able to protect people? It's all so incredibly unrealistic I want to scream.

If this season WAS realistic, all of the ninja would most likely be doing the opposite of what they are shown doing at the beginning of the season - pushing themselves to their limit, training, getting STRONGER, doing everything they can so they can make sure that neither they, nor anyone else, would ever have to feel that kind of hurt ever again.

Hey! First proper post on this account!

I’ve recently gotten into the Lego Ninjago fandom and I drew Zane, I’m gonna put the image here but then I’m probably gonna end up rambling a bit under the cut so proceed with caution

so. like i said i've gotten into the ninjago fandom recently, and basically how that happened is like maybe five years ago? or thereabouts when I was but a child my brother was watching it and so i sorta watched it with him in like bits and stuff and then recently he was watching some of the more recent stuff that's come out and i was sorta just there and i watched a bit and i was like "oh this isn't half bad" and then i read a couple fics and looked at some fanart, and then i started shipping polyninja and coming up with headcannons, and then I spent like my whole time that was meant to be like a three day holiday with my family on a three day holiday in bed and i read like most of the polninja fics on ao3 and zane became my blorbo so I read some zangst um and yeah here we are. so yeah I am currently rewatching the show (I'm only up to like episode 4 i only started at like midnight last night) but I drew this.

But about the actual drawing bc you probably care more about that then my random rambling so um yeah:

so if you can't tell my boi is having a panic attack and all those words around him? yeah those are things that he's thinking about himself. yeah the shading isnt great but honestly? hes floating in the middle of a black void glowing with glowing words floating around him so fuck shading lighting doesn't make sense and that's ok

I'm not 100% happy with how I've drawn him but that's just something I'm gonna have to figure out through trial and error and time and shit so w/e

also um I found the glitch effect on procreate and had to stop myself from using it on like p much everything so yeah um his tears are glitching as well btw if you didn't notice

also titanium zane has white hair in my heart ok sue me

what was that? no of course his feet don't get cold what? he's a nindroid and also the master of ice why would you- the socks? oh they um- they help with stealth! and keeping quiet! no he definetly dosen't wear them around the monastery/bounty because they were a gag gift from his boyfriends and they're soft and fluffy and remind him of them why would you think that?

also all of them have matching trackies like this in their elemental colour with their symbl thingo on the pocket (even wu and nya and lloyd and pixal) and polyninja wear them like all the time when they're not in their ninja shit to be cheesy or whatever and the others like never wear them but lloyd secretly loves his and nya has honestly sorta forgotten she owns some until kai pulls hers and lloyds out one night and makes them wear them andd have a rgb sibling movie night and wu is just like what ???? why woukd you get me these??? ??? ??? and they're literally just an item of clothing to pixal.

okay season 5 lets GOOOO: gonna take a minute to talk plot here. a few minutes actually my apologies i have come into your askbox swinging.

i feel like the season definitely couldve been streamlined in some aspects and i do wish they had done some things differently so bear with me for a second while i try to put things into words. so the way the season kicks off, it seems like they're going to be trying to explore kai & lloyd's relationship given kai's "ill watch over you" and how he tries to slot back into the de facto leader position after lloyd is gone, but they kind of lose that as the season progresses, which is annoying because the pieces are there!

like. morro is simultaneously foils for both lloyd and kai. last season, kai's "im gonna be the green ninja !!!!!!" gets brought up again by both chen and lloyd and also further brought up by lloyd that kai still… hasnt really gotten over himself, but it doesnt really get properly followed up either then or now. he's still subconsciously prioritizing gaining glory for himself as opposed to prioritizing what needs to get done, even if it means that he's not the one to do it.

this carries further again back into the beginning of the arc after lloyd is gone and kai keeps trying to be the leader, even if he repeatedly has no idea what he's doing. its about his glory, not about who would make the best leader (zane its zane the only reason zane leading didnt work out was because the writers knew it would be too powerful), and again is relevant to the arc because kai does this to try and fill the void in the team that lloyd left. its about the two of them.

given morro's existence as somebody who started off as "im gonna be the green ninja !!!!!!!!" and then never got over it, you'd think that we wouldve gotten a fight between him and kai where we circle back to the things brought up last season by lloyd (which works out really nicely as morro is connected to both of them by nature of being narrative foils) and we get a nice tidy wrap up in a battle of ideologies.

ok consider, for a moment: kai wants to be the one to take the glory and beat the snot out of the giant hairy eyeball, and then at some point realizes that lloyd is the one who has to beat it. unfortunately for him, lloyd is in the middle of a deathmatch with morro, so kai steps in to take morro on, making good on his promise to look out for lloyd, so that lloyd can go fulfill his destiny or whatever and save ninjago. as a result, kai steps away from his ego and the moment of glory he's always wanted bc he's realized that there are more important things to deal with, and then we get a fight dialogue abt how kai also thought he was going to be the green ninja and morro is like "why dont you resent lloyd too?!" and kai responds that he got over himself and his massive ego because !! character development !!!!! and the reason this fight is happening at all being because kai has finally let go of his need for glory & because morro never did and AUGH IT COULDVE WORKED OUT SO WELL

going back to lloyd i really dont understand why he wasnt the one to kill the preeminent - esp given his conversation with garmadon about how lloyd needs to grow up one day & how lloyd has his robe now symbolizing him taking on his dad's mantle, it wouldve made wayyyy more sense to have him be the one to finish the job and put his father to rest. yknow. like do i want to subject lloyd to round three of killing his dad? no ofc not but also. thematically yes absolutely

so then, the question becomes, if lloyd is the one to nuke the preeminent… where does that leave nya? and my answer to that is: she shouldve gotten a separate arc, frankly. this arc shouldve been about lloyd & kai's relationship, but in the canon arc nya is kind of just shoehorned in there to the detriment of pretty much everybody, including herself. she's got no narrative or thematic connection to the preeminent, shes not really relevant to the arc outside of the final battle, and she honestly deserved better.

OKAY PLOT STUFF ASIDE my brain has finally started turning on and the thought gears are cranking and i am beginning to form Opinions, which is great for me because i love having opinions. umm okay this is the other arc i am very familiar with and i had a ton of fun. it was very enjoyable. i got my terrible alt outfits and i am THRIVING

maybe one day the ninjago writers will have a season that doesnt nerf lloyd for the entire thing except the last three episodes. probably not but a girl can dream. whoever concepted the giant hairy eyeball and got it approved on a show whose target demographic is children is deranged and i love it. absolute madlad. godspeed for making something so horrifying.

i also find it VERY funny that morro's whole thing is "i am going to become the GREEN NINJA" like it even matters anymore. like bestie idk how to tell you this but that ship has sailed. the prophecy has been completed. functionally the green ninja title has no more meaning than the brown ninja.

also i cant believe cole is just . a ghost now. hes just like that i guess. i know we'll have to sort it out eventually but this is honestly a very funny status quo change.

ok i think thats aboutt it but yes i did really enjoy this season despite what my long diatribe above would have you believe. it was fun it was cool and i am very ready to head into the rest that this show has to offer.

also . btw if you dont want me to send u these things just tell me and i will stop w/ no hard feelings. personally i love people liveblogging things i like to me but i only belatedly realized this may not be universal so i am very sorry if its not 😔

yeahhhh season 5, while it has some banger concepts and The visually traumatic villain all good children's media has in their back pocket, is definitely where you can see the trend of incredibly good ideas with lackluster execution peaking... its still a really good and enjoyable show!!! but

anyway this is canon to me now i will be rolling it around in my head like a marble covered in paint. like those projects you do in elementary school art class or whatever. ooooh character parallels characters who are mirrors characters who are you but ___ but in EVERY possible direction between kai lloyd and morro.... fuck love triangles i need the threeway mirror. you are also Extremely correct that nya deserved her own thing + being more centered. water is fuckin cool as hell can't believe they flopped.

terrible alt outfits are requisite alongside overly grotesque villain design and im so glad you feel they delivered akdsjfds. the only scene i actually remember of this part is where jay, ever the out of touch accidental asshole, yells out "lloyd!! what's wrong with you!??" when morro shows up in his body but damn do i love it. this and cole on the bus when they're teachers,,, they're so stupid. they're canonically like 16. stop giving them jobs. keep doing it its perfect.

the prophecy nonsense getting dragged on for so long is so so frustrating but incredibly funny... what it means to be the green ninja changes every five seconds and honestly lloyd deserves it. just fuckin lie about what your powers are man. manipulate your friend group that being protectors means they gotta do x y and z. lloyd deserves his childhood shittiness back and all the others forgetting he was a petty little punk need to be reminded askdjfkfdsf

the fact!!! that cole just stays a ghost!!! fuckin wild. I never actually saw that get resolved when I was watching as a kid so for a solid decade he was just a ghost in my head. obsessed with the implications of him becoming human again but infinitely funny that unlike reasonable shows. dude just stayed dead after the finale. hi this is ninjago our stakes are REAL and our consequences LASTING. we promise. we made the earth guy incorporeal. he's chill about it now he thinks its cool.

edit: okay hey wait. does morro even know pixal exists. this is completely unimportant but i can’t stop thinking about it. shes still in zane’s head so i’d assume no but??? he does have lloyd’s memories??? does he even acknowledge her??? hm.
