Mattea Murdock, the Daredevil Drummer of Philly

In celebration of the forthcoming new Spider-Punk: Arms Race series (not to mention Hobie stealing scenes in "Across the Spider-Verse" last year), I wanted to finally write up my long-overdue overview post on Mattea Murdock! If you haven't read her introductory run yet, check it out here.

Mattea truly stands on her own in the wide canon of alternate universe DDs. She is a female Daredevil, she is Latina, and she somehow managed to escape Marvel's NYC gravity and base herself in Philadelphia, where she defends its citizens from violence and exploitation. Hobie and his self-styled Spider-Band encounter her in Spider-Punk (2022) #3, when they make a detour to fix the busted Spider-Van. They are all immediately-- and correctly-- impressed.

Mattea: "Yo, Kam!" Hobie: "Wait, you know each other?!" Kamala: "Duh! You think I wouldn't know the Daredevil Drummer of Philly?" Hobie: "You're a drummer too?" Mattea: "Best in town." Hobie: "Oh man, my friend Gwen is a pretty dope drummer too. I think y'all would definitely get along." Mattea: "Hope they're ready to get outplayed by a pretty, blind girl." Spider-Punk vol. 1 #3 by Cody Ziglar, Justin Mason, Jim Charalampidis, and Travis Lanham

I talked a little about her killer character/costume design when she was first introduced (I was a fool; of course she's blind), and my love for her look has only grown. It's badass, distinctive, and it slots her beautifully into Hobie's punk rock world while still evoking that trademark Daredevil image (red, sticks, pointy bits...). Her irises are red, which is a visual choice I enjoy in more heightened, fantastical DD stories/art styles, and I think it works for Mattea. Heck, I could even imagine them being colored contact lenses she's chosen to wear for the aesthetic. Also, one detail that wasn't in the previews is the fun little laughing devil face on the back of her jacket (I'm not punk rock enough to get the reference if it is one, but it reminds me of Darkdevil):

Of course, always a big priority for me is Daredevil's power-set, and Mattea provides a quick primer on her unique perspective, mostly focused on hearing and the radar sense:

Mattea: "What? You think just 'cause I'm a blind girl, I can't see? Echolocation, my abuelas used to call it. But it's more intimate. Instinctual. Can hear a kick drum from ten blocks away. Can see it too. If I think hard enough, I can even see what the garage it's being played in looks like." Hobie: "Yo, are you doing it right now?" Riri: "She's definitely doing it right now."

This is not my favorite description of Daredevil's powers, nor-- to be honest-- a particularly informative one. She can gather spatial information through walls...from ten blocks away? I also never love an overuse of visual language in any explanation of these powers, especially as it's implied that Mattea, like Matt, is completely blind. Surprisingly, no direct mention is made here of the hypersenses as a whole, beyond the reference to hearing a kick drum from ten blocks away. Even her hearing doesn't receive that much attention in the story overall, which feels like a missed opportunity for such a musical character. Her blindness, too, is pretty much irrelevant to the story, and never comes up again. But I do LOVE that she uses the term "echolocation", though is still very clearly the radar sense, in all its vague, undefined, semi-magic glory.

And visually? This is great. I'm always a fan of the cross-hatching visual, especially against a black background, and artist Justin Mason doesn't go too overboard on the detail, which is another preference of mine. And thematically, I love the ways in which Mattea's drummer identity is tied into her superheroics-- not just for laying a beatdown on bad guys, but also for channelling and enhancing her echolocation/radar sense. One of my favorite scenes in the comic is when she plays a drum solo on a roof edge to scope out the Kingpin's lair. I'm willing, in that moment, to ignore any gripes about radar sense irregularities out of respect for the coolness and thematic heft of the concept. I mean, this rocks:

Mattea: "Come on, show me the good stuff."

At the end of the day, though, this is not a Daredevil comic and Mattea is not the main character. Plus, it's only five issues long, and introduces a bunch of other new characters as well. There was only ever going to be room for the creative team to offer a cursory introduction, hopefully generating enough interest to prompt these characters to appear again in other comics. In that, I think they fully succeeded with Mattea; we get a cursory sense of her powers (or at least, enough to show that they're the normal DD set), her personality (delightfully cocky, playful, tough, fearless), a few hints of her backstory, and some truly kickass fight scenes. There's a bit of suspension of disbelief required to believe she can use drumsticks as a stand-in for billy clubs (unless her drumsticks are made of something really hefty-- and hey, maybe they are), but this is Spider-Punk. Hobie killed Norman Osborn with a guitar--twice. It's not about realism, it's about style.

Mattea: "Been waiting for this for a long time, Fisk. Real long time." Fisk: "I'm going to break you, li'l girl--AWGGH!" Mattea: "Big, strong man who sends out his band of wackos to push over people too weak to fight back." Fisk: "Wouldn't get too cocky, girlie...you're not the only one who's fast! I'm gonna hurt ya. A lot. Then I'm gonna kill ya. And I'm gonna love every second of it. You know, this is the same look you had when I had your old band clapped a few years back. I like it. Brings out your eyes--GAAAH!" Mattea: "There's something you need to understand about me, papi. I'm not the kinda girl who goes down without a fight."

I can't wait to see more of Mattea and learn more about her, her world, her friends, and her enemies. In particular, she seems to have a history (possibly romantic?) with this world's Kamala Khan, and I would love to see more of that relationship. While Mattea Murdock clearly has a lot in common with Matt Murdock, she also seems happy to be a team player, unlike Matt, and I really enjoy that. Though I guess it's not that surprising a distinction. After all, every drummer needs a band.

wooooo, more Gung-Ho's! let's jump right into it! here are my thoughts and things and translation weirdness I stumble upon as I re-read ch 2 of Trigun Maximum vol 2!

(NOTE: I'm reading the Dark Horse [physical] and the Overhaul [online] translations side-by-side)

so, a few pages in, Dark Horse does that weird thing where they have a character spell out a word as they're talking? this time, it's Midvalley. in response to Hoppered being all like (paraphrasing here) "yo, don't mess with Legato! he's not like he was before Fifth Moon," the Overhaul has Midvalley saying (quoting word-for-word here) "That's exactly what I'm saying." it's the same wording in Dark Horse, except they spell out 'e-x-a-c-t-l-y'. I'm still not sure why 🤨

but ohhhhhh, trimax Midvalley is SO different from his '98 anime counterpart! iirc the anime painted him as like...kind of a ladies' man? which could've been due to the times. but anyway, trimax Midvalley is SO complex. I've always loved that about him. he's similar to Wolfwood in doing what he has to in the name of survival...but he's not stuck between a rock and a hard place the way Wolfwood seems to be. I mean, look at him - Midvalley doesn't hesitate to pull a gun on frickin' Legato.

oh, and here's a little translation discrepancy: while he's subjecting Midvalley to a little, uh...non-consensual yoga...

...and now I regret saying the yoga thing. except...hang on. Legato's taking away Midvalley's agency here - the same way his tristamp counterpart does to Wolfwood. another SA allegory, perhaps...?

anyway. our next translation discrepancies come in Knives' instructions to Legato. Dark Horse has Knives saying (about Vash):

"We will cause him ultimate suffering...at the hands of you humans! He still doesn't get it. We'll show him the true human nature he so desperately protects. Fuse the futility of his purpose into his very bones."

meanwhile, the Overhaul has him saying:

"Make him feel eternal suffering...at the hands of you humans! He still doesn't understand. Show him the true nature of you humans that he so desperately protects. Engrave the futility of his cause into his every bone."

notice how, in the Overhaul, there is no "we" - just "you humans." that, I think, is an important distinction, Knives separating himself from what he's commanding the Gung-Ho's to do.

a second point in Dark Horse's corner here! the translations are p much the same (except, in the Overhaul, Wolfwood says "ya idiot" and Vash replies "Well, you see...), but that frickin "BeCaAaAuUsE" makes me laugh every. time. 🤣

after these antics, we learn of Tonim Town, another place where all the people just disappeared. it's interesting to note that, same as what happened with Carcasas in the last volume, 'KNIVES' was left, Wolfwood tells us in the Overhaul, "etched on the stone monument at the center of town." Dark Horse's translation only specifies "a stone in the town center." soooooo with the additional info the Overhaul gives us - plus similar visuals of the stone monument - that gives us a neat little worldbuilding detail. Carcasas and Tonim Town have those town-center monuments in common. I wonder how many others do, and how that commonality came about. perhaps an early town had that detail, and subsequent towns adopted similar spatial planning?

anyway. hi. I have 2 degrees in anthropology. I got excited;;;;;;

important difference - just the name VS this, that, and the other thing about this guy.

and I HAD to juxtapose these bits found one page after the next - before and after Rai-Dei introduces himself. serious...and then Vash ruins the mood. classic. 🤣

I never noticed the skull on the back of Rai-Dei's skates has a lower jaw

a couple more translation discrepancies. Dark Horse cuts a whole sentence from Rai-Dei, 'say' VS 'do', and then Wolfwood's line is good either way but I had to show both bc either way, he's hilarious...also, 'terrorist priest' 🤣🤣🤣

'eternal' again in the Overhaul - same as we saw in Knives' instructions to Legato

finally...that's some weird wording you've got there, Dark Horse 😆

Omg I just learned John Bale, the geographer, died a few days ago :( he wrote about geography in connection with sports, and football ofc as well, and I read some of his works for my thesis and planned to include mentions of his books in the potential academic!au with Unai and Mikel...

"The construction of collective history in the stadium produces memories, which are often organized around artifacts and particular spaces such as buildings, bits of landscape, rooms, machines, walls, furniture, whatever. It is these spaces and objects that structure people’s capacities to reminisce, to daydream about what might have been, or to recollect how their lives have intersected with those of others."

Tbh his works were like the first ones I discovered on the topic of place and space in football environment. Although some of it is a bit dated (most of his work is from 1990s, early 2000s) it's, I think, a great starting point for studying sports geography (or at least this approach to it).

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

September 16th - Blink

Clarice Ferguson was born on the island of Cartusia in the Bahamas, and her parents immigrated to Miami in the United States when she was four years old. Clarice’s Mutant features were evident from birth, including a light purple complexion, glowing eyes and pointed ears. Whereas her Mutant abilities manifested in early adolescence. These abilities entail a type of spatial displacement where she can displace matter through a teleportation rift that appear as blinking hole that connects one point in the space-time continuum to another. In short, she can create portals facilitating near instantaneous teleportation. She has difficulty initially mastering this ability and the fear of accidentally harming someone caused her great anxiety.

Clarice, now known as ‘Blink,’ was one of the young Mutants targeted by the alien Phalanx. These invaders were seeking to assimilate Mutants so to add their powers to its collective whole. Blink was unable to escape and instead used her powers to eviscerate The Phalanx, creating a series of portals that effectively disassembled the alien attacker. Sadly, Blink was caught in her own attack and perished. The fellow Mutants whom Blink had saved from The Phalanx went on to become the heroic team known as Generation X.

Years later, during the Necrosha event, Blink was resurrected by Selene who used magic coupled with the transmode virus to bring back to life a number of previously killed Mutants. These resurrected heroes were all under Selene’s spell and Blink was no different, manipulated into seeing The X-Men as her enemy. When Selene was killed her spell wore off and the various Mutants she resurrected died once more. For some reason this did not hold true for Blink and she remained alive. She would go on to have numerous adventures on her own as as a peripheral member of the X-Men.

More recently Blink relocated to Krokoa where she serves on the SWORD-support squad known as The Six.

In the alternate time-line of the Age of Apocalypse, Blink did not die fighting the Phalanx and went on to become a pivotal member of Magneto’s X-Men. This iteration of the heroine would go on to serve in the dimensional-hopping team known as The Exiles.

Blink has featured in the Fox Films’ X-Men movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past, portrayed by actress Fan Bingbing; a different version of the heroine appeared in the Fox television series, The Gifted, portrayed by actress Jamie Chung. Blink first appeared in the pages of Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #317 (1994).

Listening Task II - Dummy Head Microphone

Dummy Head microphones are used in binaural recording, the dummy head or mannequin is built with a matched pair of omnidirectional microphones between the pinna (ear), fully capturing all of the audio frequency adjustments or head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) that recreate the impression of the head shadow, giving the listener a full spatial binaural effect as if being in the same room as the recording or instruments. This sound localization generates Inter-aural Time Difference (ITD) and Inter-aural Level Difference (ILD) that happen organically as sound wraps around the head and is molded by the form of the outer and inner ear. (Minnaar et al. 2001)

The most notable and first commercially released album that implemented the binaural recording technique using a dummy head microphone was Lou Reed's 1978 Album Street Hassle. Recorded in Germany and New York in 1977, the album featured both live and studio recordings that were recorded solely using dummy head microphones. The critically acclaimed record had mixed reviews as binaural recording does not translate correctly over loudspeakers and it was received as somewhat of a novelty for headphone listeners, however, it promoted binaural recording in the music industry and more artists have adopted the technique.

The dummy head microphone is not very popular due to the price of the equipment and considering that most people like to listen over loudspeakers. But the rise of 3D cinema, virtual reality, and ASMR videos has exponentially increased the demand for binaural recording equipment such as the dummy head and has gained a lot more attention in recent years.

Tash Sultana and the healing power of music

I chose to talk about Tash Sultana, a singer, and self-taught multi-instrumentalist, for my final project. First of all, throughout my work, I will make sure to respect Tash Sultana’s choice of pronouns and will be referring to them as a They/them. Then, as there is much to say about their talent, I will try to focus on their relation with music as a passion, but more exactly, as a healing process. Sultana’s talent has allowed them to find their own place in a society in which they felt they didn’t fit. In relation to that, I will also discuss to what extent their work can be categorised as psychedelic rock, a counter culture which emerged in the 1960s.
