In conjuntion with this art piece here
...
The war doesn’t end with a crash or a bang. Nothing explodes in a fiery shower the way he’d read about in books as a kid. There's no rocking of the ground as the world shifts under their feet, and a curling anxiety in his gut as he desperately reaches out in the link for a glimmer of one just one of his teammates, his family, his lover.
There’s just the dead drop of a falling lion as a ceasefire is called. It’s just the feeling of his fingers relaxing from a white knuckled grip on Red’s controls and his head falling back with a dull thud against the headrest of the pilot’s chair. It’s the unwinding of his spine as he slumps, all his strength and exhaustion collapsing in on him as he surrenders flight back to his lion, her battle roar softening to a gentle rumble in the back of his mind. It’s the gasps of relief and whispered gratitude of his family echoing in his ears, letting him know they’re safe, they’ve made it, it’s finally done.
Keith is completely unsurprised to note which one he prefers.
Red’s purr is a constant source of comfort in his mind as he curls his legs toward his chest, eyes squinted in lazy, bone deep weariness, brain barely processing Shiro and Allura from their respective command stations outlining the conditions of ceasefire. He can barely think about anything outside the cramping in his fingers and the bleariness of his eyes from entire successive days spent raising Voltron’s sword, pouring his energy and willpower into convincing the strongest weapons in the universe to bend to his will.
It’s ok if he misses something. The team will catch him up. They always have, when the tiredness consumes him, and he checks out of conversations and discussion, slumping against the nearest comforting shoulder.
Allura’s voice is as sharp and clear as the crown that adorns her head; the queen of Altea in all her glory commands her troops from the midst of battle. Keith’s attention had been laser focused on ensuring Voltron’s continued presence, but nothing in the world could keep him from watching for Allura’s flashing blue light as she approached Haggar, now withered and raging, and knelt in front of her. Keith missed what was said, the words exchanged. But he saw the tightening of his Queen, his sister’s, shoulders, and the hand wrapping tight around the witch’s neck.
It’s been a long eight days on this earth of his.
His brain clocks out in that moment, and he rides the warm haze he’s in, letting the satisfaction of success settle into his bones. It’s not time for celebration just yet. It will come later once the dead is counted and the shrouds are laid. Keith knows better than most the toll of war, and he dreads the time that will come when the lists of the dead will be handed to them, and he will need hours, days, weeks, to grieve people he did and didn’t know and names he’s cherished and ones he’s never heard, and each loss will still hit like a blow to the ribs. After that, the celebration will come. The ballrooms of the castle will glow with life and Hunk will dress in gold, Shiro’s white hair will gleam in the light, and Pidge will protest that she just won a war, she deserves a drink. Allura will stand regal at their side, and her shoulders will be light, free from the burden of an avenger, and she will turn to them with a gleaming grin and they won’t have any choice but to smile back at her.
And lance.
Lance will be so handsome in his blue suit, golden and silver threaded in painstaking embroidery in the bed of deep sky. His hair will fall loose and natural in his eyes, heavenly blues, and earthy brown under the string set of his eyebrows, and he’ll gleam like a freshly lit candle.
He’ll take Keith’s breath away and Keith will never want it back.
But that comes after.
Right now, here, Red lands on dusty earth and grumbles in his head about doing all the work. He’s sure none of the other lions give their other halves this much shit. He loves her so fiercely it burns his throat and eyes. He can’t believe he ever spent a day outside of her. Can’t believe he wasn’t raised alongside this wonderful, temperamental, protective, grouchy cat, who bossed him and fussed him, and purred and cooed when he screamed in his dreams. Can’t believe there ever was a time he resigned himself to not having this. What a fool he was.
The wave of emotion fills the cockpit in a lilting hum, and she lights up around him, Voltron blue piercing through the chunks in his armour. Red is as alive as a blaze and warm as a hearth in his head.
Her mouth drops open with one final swell of affection, as she releases her paladin to his home ground.
Keith murmurs a breathy thank you i love you you’re everything to me, as he stumbles out, hand grasping the cool metal as he comes to a rest on the shifting sands. The sand is warm from fire and fighting and it hits him all at one.
He crouches down, head hanging as he pants and gasps for breath. The emotion of the past few days shutter his eyesight till all he sees in the grains of sand sticking to his gauntlets. His head spins and his hair is falling out of the ponytail he’d tied it back in, and his breath is coming hard now.
Something is missing. Somethings not quite right.
The swords have fallen, the helmets tossed to the side, red looms protective behind him. The shields are down the guards are dropped and he can feel the press of the Voltron bond that lets him know his team is landing nearby, drawn together with a gravitational pull.
He draws in breath, cool and refreshing and tinged with the scent of burning. Around him the sand is interspersed with freshly formed glass.
He raises his head, expecting to see the heavens above him. He wants to take in the freshly healed scar of the newly collapsed Rigel star system. Wants to know how the blazing lights of thousands of planets worth of warfare look set against the familiar earth sky. He think he might look at the constellations, like he did not far from here a hundred years ago, tucked into his dad's strong, solid arms, the scratch of a stubbly chin accompanying a moving mouth as it named Orion, Cassiopeia, Gemini.
He looks up expecting to see stars, and instead, he sees the sun.
Lance's smile is crooked, and his breath comes fast, like he ran, as he hovers over him. Their faces are so close he can count each individual freckle on this boy’s face, as precious to him as the gleam of moonlight cutting paths across the castle hallways. Oh this boy, this absolute death of him.
“Hey lover,” the words leave Lance’s mouth with ease and anticipation, years of pent-up adoration spilling out with every vowel, “we did it.”
Keith feels his own smile steal across his face, “yeah, we did.”
If possible, Lance's smile grows wider, crinkling the already forming smile lines at his eyes. Keith thinks of the products that line the counter of his bathroom sink, just waiting for a pretty bronzed hand to pick them up when the separation hits, and their resolves are softened by the press of late hours and long silence.
A silly waste. Keith likes this look on Lance.
Aging.
What a wonderful thing he never thought he’d get to have.
“You know what that means?”
Lance's voice is smooth, the tremble that only a practiced ear could pick out masked by the sincerity and anticipation that has dogged their every conversation since that night on the dais.
“We’ll wait.”
“Until when, Keith?”
“Until it’s done. When it’s done then we can have this. We can’t lose everyone for each other.”
“I’m yours?”
“When it’s done then. And when it’s done, I’m bringing you home with me. I’m putting a ring on your finger and I’m never letting you go. You’re it for me, Keith.”
“I’m not asking you to wait, that’s not fair-“
“I followed you into space Keith. I followed you to the point of no return. You aren’t asking me anything and that’s a damn shame. I’d give you anything you asked for.”
“When it’s done lance, when it’s done, I’ll ask you anything you want me to. I’ll come home with you, I’ll share a bed with you. I’ll be yours as long as you’ll have me.”
“Don’t joke, honey,”
“I’m not. You’re mine, lance”
“And-“
“you’re mine.”
The words reverberate in his head, and oh. This is what it was. The smooth slot of this thing that’s been so long coming.
Lance drops to his knees in front of him, one warm hand coming to rest on his cheek. Keith leans his head into it. He’s too tired for restraint, or shame, or any other useless emotion that would’ve held a younger him back. He’s got nothing to lose. He’s won. There’s no reason left to hold back. What a novel idea. It coats him and leaves him shivering at the feel of a gloved thumb running gently over his cheekbones.
His eyes fall back open from their unconscious close, and Lance is so close.
Honest, sweet, honourable lance. The sandpaper to all his rough edges. The iron that absorbed his burning heat. The shore that meets his rocking tide.
Keith can hear the thunder of Pidge’s feet as they run across the uneven terrain. Hunk is following after her, his voice a cacophony of relief and joy. Shiro’s laughter is warm and thick as honey, coming easier than it has since aliens were a late-night story. Allura is giggling, high and bright, and a little hysterical. It’s ok. She’ll pull herself back together and they’ll be there to fill the cracks with liquid gold.
(Or glitter. She’d like glitter.)
Lance is watching him, and Keith’s eyes drift back to him. Lance hasn’t looked away in years. Something, some last resistance hidden away so deep he didn’t even know to search for a cure, falls away.
He leans in and closes the gap.

millennium born, industry made: a y2k celebrity au klance fanfic 🎥🌐📀🏳️‍🌈📸
read chapter one here!
art by @vldlance
In a world still celebrating that the y2k bug did not, miraculously, instigate the complete collapse of society, Keith Kogane once again finds himself navigating the glittery, plastic world of Hollywood as golden actor Takashi Shirogane's far less likable younger brother. He's become used to the paparazzi, talk shows, and horrifically low-cut denim of his current surroundings, but he can't quite find it in himself to allow annoying newcomer Lance McClain to schmooze his way into mentorship by Shiro as many others have done. Lance is nothing if not persistent, however, and he slowly carves his way into Keith's life and heart despite Keith's best efforts. Keith is well aware of the public scrutiny and cruelty that comes with being openly gay, and has vowed to avoid living through that at all costs—but how can he fall in love when he's not allowed to show it? Can a restricted but safe love be a replacement for an open one? Or is there, just maybe, a chance that this new millennium can hold a space for even an incredibly public relationship between people like Keith and Lance?
finally finally posting this! i've been working on it for a while and have most of the fic planned out :] this is my first chaptered fic like...ever? so i'm really excited and i hope y'all will enjoy this intro to it as much as i enjoyed making it.
please tell me your thoughts if you have any! i embrace the serialized nature of fanfiction, so i'm not against people giving me feedback and ideas even if i have the overarching story planned.
again, i hope you enjoy!! i recommend playing 2000s music while you read :)

You, Pidge, Shiro, and Keith sneak inside the Galra ship, crawling through the hole in the metal hull Pidge had cut out. As you look around, you notice that you're inside some sort of engine control room. Pillars of raw electricity arch from floor to ceiling along the entire length of the room, crackling and buzzing. You nervously keep your distance.
"Pidge, what's your ETA?" Lance asks over the intercom.
"We're in," Pidge responds.
"We shouldn't stay in one spot for long," you say.
Shiro nods. "You're right, let's get moving."
The group sneaks throughout the ship, carefully avoiding the Galra soldiers patrolling around. The purple lights illuminating your path seem to pulse with an eerie and malicious energy, constantly reminding you of the danger you're in.
Shiro stops as the group comes up to an intersection, staring down each of the two halls that stretch out before you. For a moment he tenses up, almost as if he's paralyzed. You reach out and grab his arm, and he flinches away from you.
"Are you okay?" you ask.
"I've been here before," Shiro says, his voice barely above a whisper. "When the Galra had taken us, they– they brought us here."
Pidge perks up, "That means the rest of your crew might still be here. We have to rescue them!" he exclaims.
Shiro shakes his head, "Pidge, we don't have time. We have to get the Red Lion back to Arus.
"But we can't just leave prisoners here!" Pidge shouts. You hiss at him to keep his voice down, but he glares at you instead.
Shiro steps closer to Pidge, "Look, no one understands that more than me, but in war, we have to make hard choices. Now, let's get moving," he says and begins to walk down one of the halls.
"No!" Pidge shouts again and Shiro stops. "Commander Holt is my father... He and my brother were the ones on Kerberos mission with you."
You give Pidge a quizzical look. That doesn't make sense. Commander Holt only had one son, Matt, and as Pidge said, he was on the Kerberos mission. So how the heck is Pidge his child?
Your eyes go wide, the dots finally connecting. No freaking way! You're his daughter Katie!? You're the kid that was blacklisted from the Garrison!
The only thing different is the glasses and short hair. How did Iverson not see it? How did you not see it? You met Commander Holt's children before the Kerberos crew left Earth. You were there with Keith to say goodbye to Shiro. You literally shook Pidge's hand that day!
     Wow, that is freaking embarrassing.
"Commander Holt is your father?" Shiro repeats.
"Yes! I have been searching everywhere for my family and I am not going to give up when I am this close!" Pidge says.
"We can split up," you blurt out, still caught up in your revelation. "Keith and I can go look for the Red Lion while you guys go look for the prisoners."
"Alright," Shrio says, agreeing with your idea. "Let's go then, I remember where they are held."
Keith glances between you and Shiro. "Are you sure that's a good idea? There are Galra soldiers everywhere."
Shiro places a hand on his shoulder. "Minor change of plans, but you'll be fine. Just remember, patience yields focus-"
A door down one of the halls opens, the sound of footsteps echoing along the walls. The group splits frantically, and you and Keith sprint down one of the halls. You skid to a stop as you quickly come upon another intersection. But you don't have time to think as the Galra soldiers are heading in your direction. You grab Keith's arm and run in a random direction.
When you can't hear any footsteps other than your own, you slow down and eventually come upon another intersection of halls. You hum, wondering if you can feel the same pulsing energy you did when searching for the Blue Lion, but you have nothing.
"Where do we even go?" Keith says, pacing between the two available directions. You can't feel the Red Lion, but you can definitely feel his growing impatience. "We don't even know where we are."
You grab his hand to force his attention on you, "Hey, remember what Shiro said? Patience yields focus," you say. "Try feeling the Red Lion's energy. You'll find it."
"Right," Keith huffs and closes his eyes. You watch his expression shift, his brows furrowing as he focuses. As he stands there, your eyes slowly begin to wander around his face. They drift from his eyes, to his nose, to his cheeks... to his mouth. You've never been able to keep yourself from admiring him when he wasn't looking.
It's something you've come to do subconsciously.
"I can feel it..." Keith says softly and his voice snaps you out of your trance. You frantically drop his hand and look away, your heart pounding wildly in your chest. For a split second, you thought he was talking about you staring at him.
You mentally cuss at yourself and feel your cheeks heat up with embarrassment. You're supposed to be mad at him, not hopelessly crushing on him. You seriously need to get out of your head.
Keith opens his eyes, "I got it. This way!" he says and you follow him.
The two of you avoid the patrolling soldiers as Keith tracks down the Red Lion, and eventually, you enter a large hangar. Cargo boxes and supplies are scattered about, but what's in the center is what catches your attention.
     "What the heck?" Keith mutters.
You pause, "Allura? Are you seeing this?" you ask over the intercom.
"Hold on, (y/n), let me pull up your feed," she says and then there's a very long silence.
Not one, but two Voltron Lions sit in the middle of the hangar, protected by their force fields. The Red Lion is there, as expected, but you stare at the other. Its metal body is entirely white, save for the few crystal blue and yellow accents consistent with Altean architecture and design.
The strange Lion's bright eyes seem to eagerly lock onto you as you approach it.
"I don't understand," Allura's voice barely crackles through the speakers in your helmet. "There's only five Lions..."
"Do you think the Galra built it?" Keith asks, running up to his Lion. As surprised as he is, he needs to focus on bonding with the Red Lion.
"That would be impossible," Allura says. "The blueprints died with my father."
You suddenly feel a pulse of energy, but not in the same way as you did with the Blue Lion. It's as if the strange Lion's very essence is tethered to you, and you can feel that tether tug throughout your whole body, urging you. You stop right in front of it and place your hands against the force field. The material ripples at your touch, but it doesn't open. The Lion purrs deeply.
"It's me! Keith!"
You look over at your friend, wondering what's going on. He stands in front of the Red Lion, who doesn't let him in either. His hands push against the force field.
"I am your Paladin!" he shouts, but the Red Lion continues to ignore him. "I'm bonding with you! Hey, we're connected–"
A group of soldiers burst into the hangar and begin shooting at the two of you. You raise your arm in front of you, activating your shield.
"Why did you have to be so loud?" you snap at Keith and run over to him.
"Why weren't you watching our backs?" Keith says to you. He transforms his bayard into a sword and rushes at the Galra soldiers.
"Oh, well I'm sorry!" you sneer at him and activate your bayard. You stop for a small moment as it materializes into a double-bladed scythe, the weapon feeling balanced and weighted in your hand. "This is new–"
A Galra soldier shoots at you, interrupting your gawking. You brace yourself behind your shield, the lasers dispersing in bright flashes upon impact. Then, for a small moment, there's a pause. You take the opportunity to charge the Galra soldier.
As you join the battle, you try your best to remember what you learned at the Garrison. students were required to take a hand-to-hand combat class, but you're much more used to the small batons and wooden knives they provided rather than a lengthy scythe.
You swing the blade at the feet of a Galra soldier, knocking it down on its back. You swiftly bring the other blade down right on its chest. It penetrates the armor, exposing a bundle of wires and computers.
"Robots?" you mutter, then grunt when another Galra soldier body slams you.
You stumble and catch yourself on one of the cargo boxes. The soldier doesn't waste a second and swings its fist. You manage to move just in time, its knuckles slamming right next to your head. As you side-step, you raise your scythe and swing at the soldier. The blade pierces through its back and it falls limp to the ground.
"(y/n)!" Keith calls out. "Hold onto something!"
"What?" you look over at him and see him standing at a control panel. You grab onto the cargo box, your fingers wrapping around the rope strapped across it.
Keith presses a button and the hangar door opens. Your body jerks as everything gets sucked out into space. You cuss under your breath and you fight to hold on.
Keith holds onto the panel. He struggles to reach the button and close the doors, the vacuum of space overpowering him. You watch as his grip slips and your heart leaps into your throat.
"Keith!" you scream when he gets sucked into space. You let go of the cargo box and follow after him. As your body is thrown out of the hangar, you reach out for your friend.
"What are you doing!?" he shouts.
"What do you think I'm doing?" you shout back. You're almost to him. Just a little more and you can grab onto him.
In a flash of red and white, Keith is gone. You scream, terrified of what space monster could have eaten him. But you stop when you see the Red Lion circle back around. It saved him.
A fearsome roar rattles throughout you and you turn to see the other Lion heading right for you. Its jaw opens and it scoops you up into the safety of its mouth.
You lay on the floor for a moment, panting as you try to gather your bearings. When the inside of the Lion lights up, you scramble to your feet and dust off your armor.
"Uh, thank you!" you call out and get a purr in response. You look around and the inside layout is nothing like the Blue Lion's. Granted, everything about this Lion seems different, either subtly or majorly.
"(y/n), are you okay?" Keith asks over the intercom.
"Yeah," you say, quickly finding your way to the cockpit. "Let's get back to the castle."
"Copy that."

Your feet hit the solid concrete of the courtyard. Behind you, the sixth Voltron Lion sits down on its metal haunches, its eyes watching you. As the others return with their Lions, Allura and Coran come running out into the courtyard.
The two Alteans stop dead in their tracks at the sight of the sixth Lion. Allura remains as stunned as she was when you found it, but now she seems to truly believe it's real now that it's right in front of her. Coran, however, doesn't seem as surprised.
"After all these years..." he says, moving closer to the Lion.
"There's another one?" Pidge gawks as she steps out of her Lion.
"Holy crow!" Lance exclaims, running up to you.
"Can anyone explain what's going on?" Hunk asks. "Why is there a sixth Lion?"
Coran looks to everyone, then gestures to the robotic feline sitting behind you, "When King Alfor was constructing the Lions, the White Lion was the first," he says. "It was... an experimental design."
"How come I never knew of this?" Allura asks.
"Your father had swept its existence under the rug," Coran continues explaining. "Although it was powerful, the White Lion was deemed too flawed to be fit for the battlefield. It was stashed away to be used for scraps... but King Alfor couldn't get himself to take it apart."
"That doesn't explain how Zarkon had it, seeing as he didn't know about it," Shiro notes.
"King Alfor knew the White Lion would still be dangerous in the wrong hands and sent it away with the other Lions," Coran says. "Zarkon simply must have found it."
"Did it have a Paladin before... everything?" you ask, feeling a slight tug on the invisible tether between you and the White Lion. Deep down, you hope it means something, that it's real. You hope you aren't imagining things.
Coran shakes his head, "No."
"Well, it sure doesn't hurt to have some extra firepower," Shiro says. "Sendak is still coming for the Lions and we'll want all the help we can get to defeat him."
"Right, and now that we have the other Lions, let's go get the Black Lion," Allura says.

Updated the summary of my fiction! Will add a new chapter soon :)
If you’re interested please check it out!!
At this point, Keith can’t take it anymore and starts cackling like crazy, his voice slightly raspy. Lance declares it the most beautiful sound he’s ever heard. He’s never seen Keith laugh so hard, and it always feels so good knowing he’s the cause, in a good or bad way.
“Can you ever shut up?” Keith manages to utter between snickers.
“I can, I just don’t want to! What are you going to-”
Keith huffs and grabs his face, squeezing his cheeks to stop him from talking.
“Lance, close your fucking mouth and kiss me!”
Keith is a pianist haunted by dark thoughts and an even darker past. He attends Altea's Music Academy, but has never performed in public before; that is until his brother Shiro, who's a piano teacher, decides to promote the school with concerts at the Paladin's, the trendiest pub in town. His colleagues and friends, Pidge and Hunk, are excited: he can finally meet their best friend, Lance!
Their first encounter is... not good.
No one expects Keith and Lance to fall in love at first sight. Not even them.
(They also dance Single Ladies together. You're welcome!)

Colleen had spent the last several minutes arranging the small, brightly wrapped packages on the dining table in the Holts’ private suite onboard the Atlas. This wasn’t exactly where she expected to celebrate her daughter’s eighteenth birthday. Colleen never could have imagined that her youngest child would have been fighting in an intergalactic war at such an age, or that Colleen herself would be out in space with the rest of their little family instead of planning a quiet little party at their home.
She placed the smallest of the packages on top of the stack of colorful boxes. It was wrapped in bright blue paper and tied with a green ribbon. Curious, Colleen glanced at the card. It read “With Love, From Lance.” She smiled to herself, wondering what the gift could be. She knew Katie loved all of the other Paladins like older siblings, but with Lance things had been different. She always sat close to him at meetings and at mealtimes. She blushed when Lance complimented her and pouted when her father set a curfew on her late night video gaming sessions with him. ”Leave the door to your quarters open when that boy is here,” her husband had insisted.
Boy? She thought. No, he was a young man, Lance was nearly twenty, and was of an age to have a more serious view of dating and relationships.
More than once Colleen had noticed that Lance had casually slipped one of his long arms around her daughter’s slight shoulders when the Paladins gathered with her family to have a movie night. She also noticed that Katie wrapped her arms around Lance, clinging to him and affectionately nuzzling his chest, a gesture that always made him smile and draw her even closer to him.
Colleen had always thought they were cute together and had hoped for the longest time that their friendship would blossom into something more. She smiled at the recollection of how Lance had won a stuffed Green Lion for her when they went to the Clear Day carnival together. Katie cuddled with it every night, falling asleep with it in her arms.
Sam, on the other hand, wondered what his daughter saw in the boy.
“He’s not as smart as Hunk,” Sam had observed after Katie had gone to bed one evening. “Why would she like a boy who isn’t even close to being her intellectual equal?”
“Shh! She’ll hear you,” Colleen whispered.
”She’s asleep,” Sam replied. “I still think that she and Hunk would make a good match though. He’s a very bright young man—“
“Who’s in love with a very sweet Balmeran girl,” Colleen reminded him. “Katie has told me things about Lance. Did you know that he nearly got himself killed while saving Coran from an explosion? Lance was practically comatose from his injuries, but he woke up momentarily just to take a shot at Sendak when he was trying to hurt our daughter. Did you know about that?” Sam shook his head. “Did she tell you what Lance did when they were captured by Galra Pirates? Those fiends wanted to torture our child, but Lance wouldn’t allow them to come anywhere near her, so they gave him a good thrashing instead.” Colleen stood with her hands on her hips, as if daring Sam criticize Lance for his heroics.
”No,” Sam paused to consider this new information. “She didn’t tell me about any of that.” He didn’t comment on their daughter’s choice of boyfriends any further, but Colleen was still half-convinced that Sam still believed that no one was good enough for their little girl. Not wanting an argument, Sam changed the subject to what Matt had been doing on his latest missions with the Rebels.
Their son was, at the moment, far away from this sector, fighting in a battle in a distant solar system whose name Colleen couldn’t even pronounce.
So much of their time together as a family had been cut short by the apparent tragedy that had befallen Sam and Matt on the Kerberos mission. The grief she experienced at their mysterious disappearance consumed her, then was multiplied when Katie ran away from home to join the Garrison under a false identity. She later found out that her daughter and her friends had been abducted by a sentient spaceship and taken through a wormhole to the other end of the universe. Her only daughter was lost among the stars for three years, and when Katie finally returned home, Colleen could barely recognize her. Her long hair was shorn, her beauty concealed by the disguise of her brother’s old round spectacles. Most shocking of all, she was clad in the hard shell of some high-tech armored alien spacesuit. Although she had returned home physically unharmed, Colleen knew her the little girl she had raised was gone forever.
Every time she watched Katie fall asleep in her narrow bunk, she could momentarily forget that her daughter was a confident young woman who was, among other things, a Paladin, a scientist, and a veteran of far too many battles in the endless war that had been tearing the universe apart centuries before she had been born. Losing this war might mean the end of humanity’s freedom and possibly its very existence. Of course, they weren’t just fighting for Earth’s freedom, but for the liberation of all of the sentient beings that the Galra Empire had enslaved over the last ten thousand years. Defeating Honerva was all any of them could think about these days.
And here she was, making preparations for her youngest child’s birthday party. Colleen sat down at the table and covered her mouth to stifle a sob. But there was no one around to hear it. Sam and Katie had already departed for the mission briefing. She let the tears flow only when she was alone. Then, in order to face the day, she straightened her uniform and donned the steely facade of the brave officer and loyal crew member that she had to present herself as. She wiped the corners of her eyes and hastily departed for the main conference chamber.
[Pidge’s 18th birthday doesn’t go as planned in this fic. This is an excerpt from chapter 2 of one of the best multi chapter fics that I have ever written. Angst, drama, space battles, sword fights, friendship, loyalty, courage, humor, romance, and an epic conclusion with a satisfying epilogue. What are you waiting for? Go read it! ]

reading fanfiction isn't enough i need to unhinge my jaw like an anaconda and swallow the physical equivalent of 500,000 words of my favorite characters falling in love (in approximately the same way that they have fallen in love in an amount of fanfictions that i would not admit to god himself that i have read) and eat it

Part 2
Keith Kogane x Fem!Reader
Warning: smut, knife play, degradation, praise, dirty talk, swearing. Please do not interact with this content if you are not 18+
Author’s Note: happy keithtober, happy kinktober let’s fucking gooooo
^^^LMAO it’s been WAYYYY too long. Like, over a year. I’m so sorry to everyone who has been waiting for this bc I’ve racked up quite a taglist for this story alone haha. But seriously, thank you for all the support on part 1 and I hope you enjoy part 2!!!🥰
“You, Y/N, are a tease,” Keith’s look turns cold in replacement of the heat from his lustful gaze. “And I’m tired of it. Let’s see just how clean cut you are…”
His voice trails off, as well as his stare. His pupils are redirected to the thin, beautifully crafted knife, and I have no choice but to let my eyes follow.
He drags the weapon agonizingly slowly up my leg. The pressure is feather light. The ghost of Keith’s disconnected touch has my body temperature doing cartwheels.
“When I have you begging me to let you cum as I press this cold, sharp blade on the inside of those precious thighs of yours, shall we?”
Just when I thought my jaw was locked shut in disbelief and awe, his sensual musings easily loosened that tension.
“Y-yes. Oh my god, yes.” I breathe, reaching out for the paladin’s chest to bring him closer.
Keith evades my grasp and moves to spin me around, holding me flush against him. I can feel the dagger’s chill on my neck while his erection meets my backside.
“Not like you had much of a choice.”
It was almost too good to be true—somehow Keith knew my body as well as I did. The way he tightened his hold on me whenever I’d try to squirm out of his grasp; the icy stares he’d give me whenever a gasp escaped my lips.
Part of me felt guilty for enjoying this so much. It made no sense, but that didn’t stop me from worrying. My anxiety must’ve been evident on my face, because Keith seemed to notice something was amiss.
“What’s wrong?” He asks, his voice was softer, trading in his raspy, demanding tone for considerate and gentle inflections. The swordsman even lowered his knife, genuinely concerned for my wellbeing.
“Sorry,” I sighed, separating myself from him completely. “It’s just a lot all at once, you know? Plus, I never really thought this would happen. I mean, you’re… you, and I’m just me. It doesn’t make much sense.”
“What are you talking about? That’s ridiculous, Y/N.” Keith’s eyebrows arch as he searches my eyes for an indication of some sort.
“I– well, I just got overwhelmed is all.” I shrugged as my mouth formed a grimace.
“No, not that part. I totally understand that, and I feel it too! I’m talking about the whole ‘you’re you and I’m just me’ thing. Why would you think that?” Keith actually looks pained when he repeats my own words back to me.
“Think about it, Keith. You and I are so different and if something like this never happened, we probably never would’ve known how we felt about each other. And if you take into account our personalities in general, anything between us is bound to end in disaster. Like I said, we don’t make much sense.” I look down at the floor, unable to meet his—without a doubt—awkward sympathetic gaze.
“We don’t have to make sense! We just have to like being around each other! I’ve never felt this way with anyone before; do you know how hard it is for me to admit something like that? There’s no way to know what happens or what’ll become of any of this, but it’s not important right now. I never thought I’d be the one to say that, but it’s the truth.”
“I guess I just thought that you were too good for me. I mean, you’re a paladin of Voltron for fuck’s sake!”
Keith stays silent for a moment, smiling softly to himself as he looks down at the ground.
“Keith?” I try to recapture his attention, waving a hand in front of his face. He laughs again.
“Are you kidding? You’re practically perfect! Smart, kind, funny, a badass fighter, and god, you are so pretty.”
“I’m far from perfect, silly. Besides, that’s how I feel about you!” I feel my cheeks burning, but try my best to ignore it.
Keith closes the distance between us and gently grabs my face with both hands. Before I can think better of it, my hands find their way on top of his, keeping his touch there.
“Will you ever learn to take people for their word?” He chuckles.
I lean into his touch, and I could’ve sworn my heart was beating out of my chest in that moment.
“Probably not.” I shrugged, looking up at the paladin and giving him a sly smirk.
He rips his hands out of my grasp, my cheeks becoming cold from the sudden loss of his touch.
“Well then,” Keith is quick to sweep his leg under me, sure to catch me before I trip, laying me down gently on the floor. My breathing becomes ragged as he positions himself over me. I feel trapped, but I don’t mind it now. “I guess I’ll have to take care of that, won’t I?”
“Good luck with that.” I say nonchalantly, or at least as nonchalantly as possible. I was doting on his every breath, impatiently anticipating what his next words, movements, or touches would be.
“Thanks. Not that I needed the encouragement, but I will say it does help.”
The silence that would’ve formed between us is swiftly overthrown by my sudden gasp as Keith brings his knife back into the equation. He has it against my cheekbone, the blade is horizontal as its steely edge rests upon my skin.
“Does it turn you on that your life is in my hands?”
“I trust you.” I tell him. He would never hurt me, at least not without my consent. Despite his confidence on the battlefield, he was typically quite awkward in conversation.
“Oh, that’s sweet, you think this is about trust. I could do whatever I wanted to with you right now. You’re just my plaything and you won’t be forgetting that by the time I’m done with you.” His smirk is subtle, but it brandishes its image in my brain with hot iron.
He’s still on top of me, but he’s apprehensive, meaning I can still take control of the situation. I use the opportunity to grab him by his collar, yanking him down so his face is mere inches from mine. His dark blue, almost indigo eyes are locked into mine. He seems more vulnerable, but Keith always shields himself from others to some degree.
“Well tough shit, paladin. I don’t answer to anyone but myself.”
“Is that so?” he looks skeptical. “Well if that’s the case, then I guess I’ll be on my way out–”
“Wait!” I place my hand around the back of his neck, releasing my other hand from its grip on the collar of his shirt.
Keith eyes me, offering a quizzical hum.
“Please stay. I was just trying to be sexy and defiant! I don’t actually want you to go.”
While his expression gave no insight as to what he might be feeling, I could tell Keith was affected by my confession. I just wasn’t sure how. He was sitting up straight now, a distance created between us.
The moment was only a few seconds away from being awkward when I heard him scoff. Not only that, but that same smirk from before had returned.
“You were trying to be ‘sexy and defiant’?”
“Uh,” I swallowed hard, but not audibly. “Yeah. Those were the words I chose to say out loud.”
“I’m sure you’re wishing you’d chosen something better to say, aren’t you?” He laughed into the last word he spoke.
I nodded.
“That’s the thing about honesty,” he pauses, leaning back over me, looking directly into my eyes. “It leads to weakness.”
His words sent fire down my sternum. Feeling the cool metal of his blade return to my neck shot that heat downward, pooling in my stomach and searing against my clit.

#32 is Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye. My first reaction when I saw the song was "Oh no..." because obviously the song is not exactly about a happy couple. But I persevered! Some Voltron Keith x Pidge for you, my dear @flannelfangirl (This ended up longer than I planned. 😅)
It had been months. Keith knew it by the ache in his chest. He clutched the vid screen in his hand desperately as he moved through the ship that had been sent to collect him. Finally. He had been assigned quarters in the back end of the ship. The noise from the engines was welcome after the near constant silence during his assignment and the isolation would help him reacclimate to being around other people.
The screen whined faintly as he turned it on in the privacy of his own room. He waited impatiently for it to “load” his profile, including his messages. Of which there were many. It took him ages to scroll back until the first one that arrived after his deployment. From Shiro. He skimmed it and marked it to read later. A few from Hunk, another from Shiro… Then the ones he was looking for. Hoping for. Pidge had obviously been unsure of what to say at first. Her messages were almost perfunctory. Awkward. But then she seemed to relax, telling him about her days working in the lab, teasing him about how she’d have to kill him for telling him about her projects.
There were moments where he could feel her longing, the fact that he hadn’t responded making her doubt what she was doing. What they were doing. Keith felt his breath catch when he got to the first message from after he was first supposed to return. Her tone was anxious, questioning. He completely understood. He had been thinking about her constantly, and when the day came and went with no signal from the retrieval team, his first thought had been worry that she would think something happened to him.
The messages after that became less frequent, and stiffer. Someone had obviously communicated to her that he was still on assignment but neglected to tell her why or what was happening. At the time, he hadn’t known either. Another few weeks and it was clear that no one had told her anything. It was protocol, he supposed, but it also meant that as far as Pidge was aware, he had chosen to stay incommunicado. It was around the time he had finally learned that someone would be coming to get him that he saw the change in her responses completely.
Sadness. Loneliness. She regretted trying to make “this a thing. Whatever it was.”
Keith felt his chest squeeze so hard he almost couldn’t breathe. He was punching buttons and desperately waiting for the response on the other end. Nothing. He hit the vid screen version of “redial.” Still nothing.  Had she disconnected her line?
Through eyes he didn’t realize were so blurry, he looked again at the screen and realized that in his panic, he’d hit something wrong. Taking a sharp and shuddering breath, he cleared it and started over.
Ringing.
Or the subspace equivalent, anyway.
“Keith?” He let out a gust of air, immediately rushing to apologize, to try to explain.  “Hold on, hold on. Are you alright?” her voice was gravelly over the distance, but he realized that on her side of the planet thousands of lightyears away, it was something like three in the morning. “I thought maybe you were…” She couldn’t say it. He wouldn’t let her.
“No. No, I’m alright. My extraction got delayed because another team’s mission went sideways and they needed out. I’m sorry I couldn’t let you know what was going on.”
There was a long pause. The light in her room flicked on as the view changed. He realized she was sitting up now. “Keith… I… I can’t handle…” She took a breath, her lower lip quaking. “After Matt and my dad.” Another breath. “Not knowing what happened to you was more than I could take.”
Keith swallowed hard. He had been thinking about it for the last few weeks while he was stuck in his assignment and unable to do much else. “I’m coming back to Earth.” Pidge blinked at him. “I told Kolivan when they picked me up that I was done. This mission was one too many times I got stranded.”
“Keith… this isn’t something you just… quit.” He shook his head. He explained how long and hard he’d been thinking about it. How little he felt the Blades needed him anymore. It was time. Had been time. It was just that much cleared now, when he was faced with what he stood to lose. What he may already have lost…
“I’m on my way back now. It will take me a couple of days, but I’ll be there.” He took a fortifying breath. “Can we talk about it again when I get there?”
The video quality was not the best, but he thought he could see her nose screwed up in thought. Her shoulders fell slightly. “Alright. Yes.” Keith nodded in relief. She stared at him hard for a long moment and he waited for her to decide what she wanted to say. “You sure you’re alright? You weren’t hurt out there were you?” Not this time. He wouldn’t tell her about the many other times. Yet. Once they figured things out again. Once they got the chance to talk. Then he would come clean about how dangerous his work had truly been.
“Get some sleep. I’m sorry I woke you.”
She smiled a little. “It’s like I’m a whole different person now, huh? Sleeping at four in the morning. Who woulda thought?” He couldn’t help a relieved chuckle at her teasing. She was both the person he used to know and the one he had grown to love. The one who might actually make Earth feel like home again.
“You’re Pidge, Katie. That’s what matters to me.” She grinned. “Good night. See you in a few days.” She nodded, wiggling her fingers at the screen in farewell.
Keith collapsed back on his berth, a sigh leaving him. Bone tired and yet boneless, he fell asleep.

For bthb, could you do Keith with seizures? The cause could be something to with him being half Galra? Maybe it happens in the atlas (season 8?) completely optional suggestion I’d love it if you only do the first part (first time suggesting something so sorry if this is worded weirdly)
It’s been ages, and whoever you are, dear anon, I have no idea whether you’ll ever actually see this, but I hope you do and I hope you enjoy.

Voltron had saved another planet. That meant yet another celebration to thank them, something that the team always had mixed feelings about. Lance and Allura and Coran loved them, always ready for a chance to mingle and socialize (and in Lance’s case, flirt), while Pidge and Keith were less than thrilled, both of them preferring to stay away from social situations whenever possible. Shiro and Hunk seemed to fall somewhere in the middle, only really complaining if they were especially tired, but enjoying themselves most of the time once they were there.
He didn’t know about the others, but Keith also struggled with seeing the necessity of these events. Sure, he knew that the planet’s people were thankful for their help, but did it really require a party every time? Didn’t they have better things they could be doing, like, you know, saving more planets? This was a war. Allura was always preaching the importance of diplomacy, but he had a hard time believing that it should take precedence over battles.
Plus, they never really knew what they were getting themselves into when landing on an alien planet. Of all the members of Voltron, Keith really should have been the best at getting thrown into new, unknown situations. After all, that’s how he’d spent his entire childhood. But those families had all been human, at least, and therefore mostly predictable. Alien planets were anything but.
For instance, on most planets the celebrations had been rather formal affairs, some even with dancing like a ball straight out of a movie. Others had been more casual, and many focused on food (those were Hunk’s favorites, of course).
On this particular planet, though, as soon as the president announced that the festivities would begin, the ballroom-like space turned instantly into a club. The main lights switched off, but were replaced by multi-colored beams that spun wildly around the room. Speakers hidden somewhere in the ceiling and walls began blasting what apparently passed as music on this planet, complete with a drumbeat that vibrated the floor.
Keith, taken completely off guard, couldn’t stop his violent flinch. He did, however, just barely catch himself before his hands clapped over his ears. Sucking in a deep breath, he forced his arms back down by his sides. Loud sounds had always been miserable for him. He’d had to learn a long time ago that it wasn’t always appropriate to indulge himself and try to block them out, though. Some people didn’t take very kindly to that, and the last thing he wanted was to insult anyone here. Allura would have his head.
The lights were awful, too, and he blinked several times in a row before settling on just squinting at everything. Every time one flashed directly across his face he winced, trying not to squeeze his eyes shut and leave them that way. Not that it mattered much if he did, he could still see the colors behind his eyelids.
“Woo!” Lance yelled, immediately getting into the spirit and waving his arms over his head. “Heck yeah, this is what I call a party!” And he was off, sliding and bopping through the crowd, getting everyone around him excited and dancing.
Why can’t you be more like him? that ugly voice in Keith’s head sneered. Everybody loves Lance, no matter where we go. Really, why can’t you be more like any of them?
The rest of the team were all looking far more comfortable in this environment than he ever could. Some were dancing, others eating and chatting. Even Pidge had found someone to talk technology or math with, judging by the passion in her expression. Meanwhile, he just stood there awkwardly, fighting against the strong urge in every inch of his body to flee the room and find somewhere dark and quiet to hide.
Pretty recently he’d finally realized that his sensitive eyes and ears probably came from his Galra side, thanks to getting to know the Blades and his mom and finding out more about their physiology. That didn’t make him feel any better about it. Sure, he was getting more and more used to the whole half-Galra thing, and getting closer to actually, fully accepting it. But this was just another case of being Galra making him different. More accurately, weird. Another reason why he’d never fit in anywhere he went.
And that’s why I can’t be like them. Because I’m not like them, and I never will be.
Weaving slowly through the crowd of aliens, Keith made his way toward the wall closest to the entrance. He tried his best not to bump into anyone, despite the fact that half of them were in the middle of flailing - ahem, dancing. Still, hands and sleeves brushed against his arms and shoulders. Somehow they felt like pins pricking his skin, even through his jacket. He hurried past, wrapping his arms around himself tightly and tucking himself up against the wall. But the wall was vibrating, like the floor. It shot up his spine into his head, making him clench his teeth even harder, and he quickly stood up straight again.
He thought he was going to be sick. Which was stupid, it was just lights and music. But it was crawling underneath his skin, pounding into his temples, clogging up his throat.
He wanted to go home.
“Hey, man! You okay over here?” Hunk appeared next to him, shouting to be heard over the chaos of music and conversations. “You look kinda pale.”
The added noise stabbed through Keith’s skull, and he tried his hardest not to show it. “‘m fine.”
Finishing chewing whatever he’d just popped into his mouth, Hunk frowned and stepped a little closer. “You sure? I mean, I know you don’t like parties, but…this seems a bit worse than normal.”
Keith looked over at him. He seemed entirely genuine, as Hunk usually was. “The lights and music are just…” This time he failed to keep from flinching when one of the beams crossed his face. “A lot. It’s no big deal, though.”
“Ohhh.” Hunk’s expression morphed from concern to something that was probably pity, which is not what he was hoping for. “Yeah, Shiro said at some point that you have like, sensitive eyes and stuff, right? I’m sorry, man. You could go back to the Castle, you know. You don’t have to stay if you’re miserable.”
He shook his head. “No, it’s…it’s fine.” He wasn’t going to disappear and risk it causing any number of problems - alien presidents getting offended, Allura deciding she needed them all to line up and have some sort of ceremony, some kind of further attack occurring. Call him paranoid, but all of the above had happened before. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be okay.”
He really needed this conversation to end now, though. Having to talk and focus on what Hunk was saying, and also smelling the food he was holding on top of the smell of a bunch of alien sweat and perfumes was making things even worse. It felt like his head was going to explode with all of the sensations it was trying to process.
In fact, maybe it was already exploding. Maybe it was slowly frying, at least, because there were stars appearing around him that he was pretty sure weren’t part of the party’s special effects. Hunk was saying something else next to him, but Keith couldn’t process it, staring up at the blinking stars. Everything in the room seemed to be moving in slow motion all of a sudden. Then there was an especially bright burst of light, and he vaguely felt himself falling.
.
.
“I’ll be okay,” he said. “Don’t worry,” he said. But then Hunk was watching Keith stare off into space at nothing before starting to shake and dropping abruptly to the floor.
“Whoa! Keith!” He dove onto his knees, torn between watching Keith’s whole body twitch and jerk uncontrollably and looking around frantically for someone to help him. Everyone’s attention was on the festivities, though, not down on the floor, and the music was way too loud to call out to anyone. Hunk was the only one who knew something was wrong.
And he was…not really equipped to handle something like this. He’d had some first aid classes, though, so he could…he could do this, right? It wasn’t like there was another choice. Keith needed him.
This was definitely a seizure. And it was horrifying. But he had to ignore that and focus on what he could do. He knew he wasn’t supposed to hold onto him, couldn’t stop the terrible shaking that had taken over his body, but he was pretty sure it was a good idea to try and cushion his head. So he scooted over, reaching out tentatively and very, very carefully lifting Keith’s head with both hands until he could set it into his lap.
The Red Paladin’s eyes were open, but only white was showing. Hunk’s heart was in his throat watching him. Vaguely he thought he remembered something about counting when someone was having a seizure, but he had no idea why or how much time had passed already so he didn’t try to start. All he could do at that point was watch and wait and hope that it would be over soon.
And eventually, after what seemed like a lifetime, it was. Keith’s body relaxed as quickly as it had begun seizing, going limp on the floor. He looked…dead. Which completely freaked Hunk out for a moment, almost more than the seizure had to start with, until he saw his chest rise and fall once, then twice. Okay. Okay, so he wasn’t dead. He was…not okay, but he wasn’t seizing and he wasn’t dead. Now he just needed to get someone’s attention, and since the shaking was past he was able to scoop him up in his arms and stand.
It didn’t take long after that for someone to notice them then. One paladin draped across another’s arms was kind of concerning, apparently, and pretty soon they had a swarm of aliens and the other paladins around them, ready to help.
.
.
After the stars and the falling, Keith didn’t remember much besides a buzzing sensation, like electricity had taken over his limbs. The next thing he was fully aware of was opening his eyes to blissful darkness and quiet. The only sound was a whispered conversation in an unseen corner of the room, which quickly came to a halt when he shifted.
“Keith? You with us, bud?”
“Y-yeah.” He stretched out his legs, trying to figure out what he was lying on and why it felt like someone had beaten him with a stick. Every single muscle in his body was sore, even ones he didn’t realize he had. “What, uh…what happened?”
Hunk scooted out to the edge of the chair across from him, catching his attention. “You, um…had a seizure. It was super scary, man. I’d be really okay if that never happened again, but I mean of course I don’t like, blame you for it, I highly doubt you did it on purpose.”
“I wasn’t actually there for the seizure part, but seeing you passed out wasn’t exactly reassuring, either,” Lance piped in, appearing to perch on the arm of Hunk’s chair. “I just thought you were pale before, that was like, ghost quality.”
Keith was still trying to wrap his mind around the concept of having a seizure, but he was surprised to see them both there, especially Lance. “You should still be at the party, not worrying over me. I didn’t mean to interrupt everything.”
“You think I was gonna keep dancing with the ladies while my teammate was in here dying?” Lance scoffed, sounding offended. “The ladies will just have to do without me for a little while.”
“The ladies are probably all waiting to thank Keith for distracting you for a few minutes,” Pidge quipped drily. She draped herself over the back of the couch that Keith was apparently lying on. “And he’s not dying, anyway. He’s fine.” Her eyes cut over to Keith’s face, and he could see concern trying not to show itself. “Right?”
“Um. Yeah. I…think.” He started to push himself up, grimacing a little at the pull on his muscles, but Pidge placed the heel of her hand on his forehead and shoved him back down.
“Cool it, cowboy, you need to rest.”
“I’m fine, really. I don’t know what happened, but…I’m okay now.” He was pretty sure, anyway. He felt relatively normal, other than the soreness, but not knowing what had brought on the seizure and whether or not it would happen again was a bit concerning, to say the least. “It isn’t the first time I’ve had one, anyway. Happened once when I was a kid, too. And I was fine then,” he added quickly.
“Was there a lot of sensory input happening then, too?” Shiro crossed the room, tucking a datapad into his pocket. “Hunk said you were complaining about the lights and music.”
Keith thought back to the first incident, at a foster brother’s birthday party in an arcade. “Yeah. There was.” The foster parents had sent him away after that, claiming they were unprepared to deal with major medical issues. Never mind that it hadn’t happened again for almost a decade, and not until he was all the way in outer space.
Shiro nodded. “I was just talking to the Blade’s medic. Apparently it isn’t a common thing for Galra to experience, but he has seen it before in mixed species. The Galra sensory issues combined with…something that certain other races have, it was a bit over my head. But he’d like to run some tests next time he sees you, just to be sure.”
Keith groaned and shook his head. Just what he needed, more tests by the Blade trying to figure out how exactly his body worked.
“I appreciate you guys, um…being there for me. Helping me out. Especially, um, you, Hunk. I hate that I caused a scene, though. You all should get back before you’re missed too much.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Hunk waved a hand dismissively. “Allura and Coran are still holding down the fort out there, though we should definitely let them know soon that you’re awake and okay. They were worried about you.”
“We’d all much rather be in here making sure you’re okay, Mullet.”
It never failed to surprise him, hearing the rest of the team express any kind of care and concern for him. A warm feeling invaded his chest and eased some of the tension in his body.
“And Keith? If this ever happens again, will you please let us know so we can help before your body freaks out?” Pidge poked him in the stomach to emphasize her words.
“Uh…yeah. Yeah, I can do that, I guess.” Part of him still wanted to protest about diplomacy and not angering aliens and such, but he knew he’d just get shut down. Instead he glanced around at the team and smiled a little. “Thanks.”

𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚁𝚒𝚜𝚎 𝚘𝚏 𝚅𝚘𝚕𝚝𝚛𝚘𝚗 (𝙿𝚝 𝟷)
"Roll out, donkeys!" Lance, Hunk, and Pidge exit the simulator and stand before Iverson and their class. A young woman stands beside her team, staring at the three in sorrow. Y/N Gane, top of the class; best pilot "Well let's see if we can't use this failure as a lesson for the rest of you students. Can anyone point out the mistakes these three so-called cadets made in the simulator?" Iverson shouted.
"The engineer puked in the main gearbox," a voice said.
"Correct, as everyone knows, vomit is not an approved lubricant for engine system. What else?" Iverson said while shaking his head.
"The comm spec removed his safety harness," another voice said and Y/N laughs a little.
"Is there something funny Miss Gane?" Iverson asks. Everyone looks to Y/N and she stands up straight and keeps a straight face.
"No sir" She replies.
"Miss Gane, can you tell me something they did wrong?" he asked.
"Erm... The pilot... crashed?"  Iverson looked at Y/N before smiling.
"Correct! Miss Gane" he shouted and walked away. Y/N gave lance an apologetic smile, who just shrugs and smiles "And worst of all, the whole jump, they're arguing with each other! Heck, if you're going to be this bad individually, you'd better at least be able to work as a team! exists to turn young cadets like you into the next generation of elite Astro explorers, but these kinds of mental mistakes are exactly what cost the lives of the men on the Mission" Y/N's fists clench.
"That's not true, sir!" Pidge shouts.
"What did you say?!" Lance clasps his hand over Pidge's mouth, but Pidge continues; her voice muffled by the hand.
"Sorry, sir! I-I-I think he may have hit his head when he fell out of his chair. But point taken" Lance says.
"I hope I don't need to remind you that the only reason you're here is that the best pilot in your class had a discipline issue and flunked out, and the second-best refused to be the best" Lance glances at Y/N before back at Inversion "Don't follow in his footsteps" Iverson turns to look at Y/N and her team "Miss Gane, your team is next!" Lance, Hunk and Pidge watch as their classmates board the simulator, Y/N patting Pidge's shoulder, smiling softly.
==
Later, Lance and Hunk hide in the halls of the Garrison as curfew begins.
"Lights out in five! Everyone back to their dorms, now" Iverson shouts.
"We shouldn't be doing this" Hunk whispers.
"You heard Commander. We need to bond as a team. We're going to grab  Pidge, hit the town, loosen up, meet some nice girls, maybe we can bring Y-"
"OK, I'm just- I'm just saying this here, right now, on the record: This is a bad idea" The lights turn off; Lance and Hunk sneak through the hallways.
"You know, for someone in a space exploration program, you don't have much of a sense of adventure"
"All of your little 'adventures' end up with me in the principal's office" Lance sneaks by the instructor's lounge and motions for Hunk to follow, which he reluctantly does "Oh, man..." The two hide in recycling cans as a guard passes by.
"L-5 North all clear," The guard says. Lance jumps out; Hunk tries to follow suit but gets stuck and falls over. Hunk stands.
"I'm fine" They hide as Pidge and Y/N leave Iverson's office. The two watch"
"Where are they going?" Lance asks. Y/N and Pidge were sat on the roof of the Galaxy Garrison. Pidge listens to radio chatter through headphones and special equipment. Y/N is sitting beside her, looking up into the sky, eating a snack bar. Hunk crawls along the roof and Lance carefully removes the headphones to speak close to his ear.
"You two come up here to rock out?" Lance asks. Pidge jump and spin around to face Lance and Hunk. Y/N following, snack bar still in her mouth.
"Agh! - Oh, Lance, Hunk. No, Um... we-"
"We were just looking at the stars," Y/N says, chewing.
"Cool. Where did you get all this stuff? It doesn't look like Garrison tech" Lance wondered.
"He built it," Y/N says, swinging her arm over Pidge's shoulder.
"He built all of this" Hunk said astonished. He tries to touch the equipment; Pidge smacks his hand away.
"Stop it! With this thing, I can scan to the edge of the solar system" Pidge says, gesturing to the tech.
"That right? All the way to Kerberos" Lance smirks. Pidge looks away but does not respond, Y/N's eyes sadden. "You two go Ballistic, every time the commander brings it up, What's with that?" Lance continued. Hank tries to sneakily touch the equipment again.
"Second warning, Hunk!" Y/N says and Hunk stops.
"Aw...."
"Look, Pidge, if we're going to bond as a team, we can't have any secrets. Same for you Y/N" Y/N looks at Lance confused "You may not be a part of the team, but you're our friend. Friends can't keep secrets from each other"
"I mean they can" Y/N mutters.
"Fine. The world as you know it is about to change. The Mission wasn't lost because of some malfunction or crew mistake—" Pidge sees Hunk trying to touch the equipment again "-STOP TOUCHING MY EQUIPMENT!!" Hunk groans but finally desists "..."So, I've been scanning the system and picking up alien radio talking" Pidge pushed up her glasses.
 "Whoa, what? Aliens?!" Hunk says.
"Oookay. so your insane, Y/N please tell me you don't believe in him," Lance asked me. Y/N nods"
"He is serious" Y/N holds up a pad with 'Voltron?' on it "They keep repeating the same word over and over again, Voltron. and tonight it has been crazier"
"How crazy" Lance said. The Galaxy Garrison building alarms blare. Iverson speaks over the intercom
"Attention, students. This is not a drill. We are on lockdown!, Repeat: all students are to remain in barracks until further notice" A fiery object appears in the sky.
"What's going on? Is that a meteor?! ... A very, very big... meteor?" Hunk says and Y/N grabs binoculars
"Its. It's a ship" She says. Lance takes the binoculars and looks at the object.
"Holy crow! I can't believe what I'm seeing! That's not one of ours" Lance said with wide eyes.
"No. It' 's one of their" Pidge says.
"So wait, there are aliens out there?!" The three watches as the alien spacecraft crash into the desert. The Garrison sends out land rovers to the crash site.
"We've gotta see that ship!" Pidge says, standing up, pulling Y/N with him.
"Pidge, slow down" She laughs.
"Hunk, Come on" Lance yelled and chases after the two.
"Oh, this is the worst team-building exercise ever"
==
Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Y/N spy on the quarantines crash site from a nearby cliff. Lance views the alien spacecraft through binoculars.
"Whoa... What the heck is that thing?! ... And who the heck is she?" Lance asks, looking at women through the binoculars.
"Lance!" Y/N smacks his head.
"Ow! Right, Right, alien ship. Man we will never get past those guards to get a look" Pidge continues to type on her computer.
"Aw, man. Yeah, yeah, I guess there's nothing to do but head back to the barracks, right?" Hunk says.
"Wait for Pidge, there is a camera in there, try and hack into it," Y/N said and pointed at the screen. Pidge hacks into it.
"I've grabbed its feed, Look" They all looked at the screen.  Inside, a man is strapped to a table as Garrison technicians examine him.
"Hey! What are you doing?"
"Calm down, Shiro. We just need to run some tests" Iverson says, trying to settle Shiro. Y/N chokes on her breath.
"You have to listen to me! They destroyed worlds!" Shiro grunts "Aliens are coming!"
"That's! Shiro The pilot from the Kerberos Mission, That guy's my hero!" Lance shouts with excitement.
"Guess he's not dead in space after all" Hunk says.
"Where's the rest of the crew?" Pidge asks, saddened. Y/N put her hand on her shoulder, smiling softly.
"I'm sure they're fine, I mean if Shiro's still alive, I'm sure the rest are" She reassures.
"Do you know how long you were gone?" Iverson asks, walking over to Shiro?
"I don't know, Months? Years? Look there's no time. Aliens are coming here for a weapon. They're probably on their way right now. We need to get Voltron!" Shiro struggles, trying to get out of the bounds holding him down.
"Voltron!" Pidge and Y/N say in unison.
"Sir, look at this. It appears that his arm has been replaced with a cyborg prosthetic" A technician asks, looking at Shiro's arm.
"Put him under, until we figure out what it can do," Iverson said and a technician came over with a syringe.
"No, no, no don't put me under, There's no time, Let me go!" Shiro is one again trying to get out of the bounds.
"They didn't ask about the other crew members"
"What are they doing? The guy's a legend. They're now even going to listen to him" Lance said.
"We have to get him out," Y/N says.
"Ah, I hate to be the voice of reason here, always, but weren't we watching on TV, because there was no way getting past the guards" Hunk says, standing up.
"That was before we were properly motivated. We have just got to think. Could we tunnel in" Lance says, standing up. Y/N snorts, standing up alongside him.
"What so funny," Lance asked.
"Really? Tunnel in, Tunnel in!!" Y/N laughs
"Well at least I have a plan, where's yours," Lance said with a smirk.
"We find some hazmat suits and sneak in like med techs" Y/N smirks back. Lance thought for a while.
 "That's a pretty good idea"
"Or... we could dress up like cooks, sneak into the commissary... little late-night snack" Hunk drools.
"...No. What we need is a distraction" As if on cue, an explosion burst in the distance and the four cadets scream.
"Is that the aliens?! Are—Tha—The—Is that the aliens?! Are they here?! They got here so quick!"
"No. Those explosions were a distraction, for him!" Pidge points to a figure arriving by hovercraft "The Garrison's headed towards the blast, and he's sneaking in from the other side!" Lance views the new arrival through binoculars.
"No way...!  Oh, he is not going to beat us in there! That guy is always trying to one-up me!"
"Who is it?" Hunk asks.
"Keith!"
"Come on, Lance. Don't start"
"Who?" Pidge asks.
"Are you sure?" Hunk asks.
"Oh, I'd recognize that mullet anywhere!"
"Lance, come on, man! Keith hasn't done anything"
"Who's Keith?!" Pidge asks. The four-run towards the quarantines crash site. Inside, the technicians examine Shiro, who's been put under.
"These readings are off the chart," The technician says. Keith enters.
"Hey!" Iverson shouts. Keith attacks and knocks out all three technicians, then runs to Shiro, surprised to find him.
"Shiro...?" Keith cuts Shiro free from his bonds and tries to carry him out. Lance, Hunk, Y/N and Pidge arrive.
"Nope. No, you—No, no, no, no, no, no, no you don't. I'm saving Shiro" Lance lifts Shiro over his shoulder.
"Lance, let's just get him out of here" Y/N looks to Keith "Hey Keith"
"Hey Y/N, long time no see" Y/N nods "So, who's this?" Keith asks, looking to Lance.
"Who am I? Uh, the name's Lance" Keith silently looks at Lance without recognition "...We were at the same class at the Garrison?"
"Really? Are you an engineer?"
"No, I'm a pilot. We were, like, rivals. You know, Lance and Keith, neck-and-neck" Y/N snorts.
"Oh wait, I remember you. You're a cargo pilot"
"Well, not anymore. I'm fighter class now thanks to you washing out" Lance says, proud.
"Lance!" Keith looks to Y/N in confusion "I refused to take your place, that was yours. I couldn't take it" Keith nods, before looking to Lance.
"Well, congratulations"
==
Lance and Keith carry Shiro out together. Keith hops onto his hoverbike, along with Lance and Shiro. Keith holds out his hand for Y/N.
"Hop on," He says. Y/N smirks, reaching for his hand before pulling his close.
"You may be a gentlemen and I may be a girl, but this girl beat your ass in training" She whispers into his ear before jumping onto the bike behind him, Keith staring at his hand stunned - and slightly blushing. Hunk spots the Garrison returning.
"Oh, man, they're coming back and they do not look happy. We gotta go. Uh, do you mind if we catch a ride with you?" Hunk asks. Everyone climbs aboard Keith's hovercraft and it tips over.
"Is this thing going to be big enough for all of us?" Pidge asks.
"No" Keith replies bluntly. Keith has to take off as the Garrison arrives to pursue them. Pidge has to hold on to Shiro.
"Why am I holding this guy?"
"Hey, we did all fit!"
"Can't this thing go any faster?" Lance asks, looking back at the vehicles following.
"We could toss out some non-essential weight" Keith says sarcastically. Y/N shakes her head, nudging Keith's hip with her knee.
"Oh, right!" He glances around, clearly not getting Keith's sarcasm "OK, so that was an insult. I get it"
"Big man, lean left!" Keith shouted. Hunk leaned left.
"Whoa!" They all shouted. Two of the cars smashes into each other.
"Aww, man. Mr Harris just wiped out Professor Montgomery. No, wait he's fine" Hunk sighed in relief. They were on one of the roads and next to us was a big ditch
"Big man, lean Right!" Keith shouted. Hunk leaned right, they managed to get over to the big ditch and land on another road. Two of the cars are still chasing them. They were still all screaming, and they went around a corner. One of the cars crashed, but one is still following.
"Guys? Is the-the-the-the-that—Is that a cliff up ahead?" Hunk stammers.
"Oh, no, no, no" Lance shouted.
"Yup," Keith smirked.
"Just like old times" Y/N smiles, wrapping her arms around Keith. Keith increases speed, everyone was screaming, apart from Y/N, Keith and Shiro. The hovercraft jumps off the cliff.
"What are you doing? You're trying to kill us all!" Lance shouts
"Shut up and trust him" She shouts back. Keith safely avoids crashing and continues flying into the desert, escaping the Garrison.
==
Shiro and Y/N stand outside a desert shack at sunrise, the two hugging each other.
"It's good to see you again, Shiro," Y/N says, smiling. They pull away as Keith approaches.
"It's good to have you back," Keith says, placing his hand on Shiro's shoulder.
"It's good to be back" Shiro replies.
"So what happened out there? Where...were you?" Y/N ask.
"I wish I could tell you. My head's still pretty scrambled. I was on an... alien ship but... somehow I escaped. It's all a blur. How did you know to come to save me when I crashed?"
"You should come to see this" Shiro and Y/N follow Keith into the shack. Inside, Keith shows Shiro, Y/N, Lance, Hunk and Pidge his board of maps, diagrams and notes.
"What have you been working on?" Shiro muttered.
"I can't explain it. After getting booted from the Garrison, I was kinda... lost and... felt drawn out to this place. It's like something... some energy was telling me to search." Keith explains.
"For what," Shiro asks. Y/N stands close to Shiro, his arm around her shoulders, her own crossed in front of her.
"Well, I didn't know at the time... until I stumbled across this area." Keith pointed at a map  "It's an outcropping of giant caves covered in these ancient markings" We looked at the pictures of the markings "Each tells a slightly different story about a blue lion, but they all share clues leading to some event, some arrival happened last night. Then you showed up" Keith explained more. Shiro took his arm from around Y/N's shoulders and walked over to the others.
"I should thank you for getting me out. Lance, Right?" Shiro says. He offers Lance his prosthetic hand. Lance hesitates but shakes it. Shiro offers to shake Pidge and Hunk's hand, Pidge being the only one who does.
"This nervous guy's Hunk. I'm Pidge. so, did anyone else from your crew make it out?" Pidge asks, which makes Shiro's face saddens
"I'm not sure. I remember the mission and being captured. After that, it's just bits and pieces" Shiro goes back over to Y/N, placing his arm back over her shoulders as she leans into his side. Lance zones out from the conversation, looking at the two confused.
"Are they TOGETHER! No, Lance, No! Shut up! He's way, way older than her. They're probably just really, really close" Lance thinks "I'll ask Y/N later"
"You'll ask me what late?" Y/N asks, Lance looks to see Y/N standing in front of him.
"Uhm, I- I was just wondering if- Uh"
"Come on Lance, spit it out" Lance sighs.
"Uhm.. a-are you and Shiro... Uh... together?" Y/N eyes widen before bursting out in laughter "What's so funny?"
"You thought me and Shiro were dating?" Y/N says, whole trying to catch her breath.
"It was just a question" Y/N continues to laugh, gaining everyone's attention.
"What happened?" Hunk asks.
"I just asked her if she and Shiro are dating" Pidge starts to laugh a bit. Shiro and Keith chuckle.
"What!? Why's that so funny" Lance asks, getting slightly annoyed.
"Okay, okay," Y/N says, trying to catch her breath "I'll tell you" She clears her throat "Shiro, is my brother" There was a long, awkward silence.
"WHAAAATTT!!!!????" Hunk and Lance asks in unison

Some character tidbits for my upcoming fic >:3
(Early days, so this is all subject to tweaks and change.)
Lance Mcclain: - 21, recent graduate from the mammalian biology program at Zedtech. California living since he was 10, hobbyist swimmer who loves the heat but can’t take the humidity. Excitable, easy going and readily swept along, he's a fast thinker with a keen, sharp-witted understanding of the world.
Keith Kogane: - 22, part-time mechanic and a sanctuary employee at VOL. Responsible for collection operations and animal/ habitat structure transfer. Not as good with people as he is with cars and cats. Polite and (sometimes) punctual, he comes across quiet but well mannered. Struggles sometimes with being too passionate about the cause - he never knows when to quit.
Takashi Shirogane: - 28, long term employee of VOL and local legend in the West-Texan town he lives in. The man who befriended 'Di', a melanated mountain lion that took a dive in her health when her former sponsor abandoned her. The two have been fast friends for almost 10 years. Keith's Adoptive brother who strives always to not only see the best in people, but to nurture it.
Allura Alfor: 24, successor to her father's sanctuary. Former astrophysics student turned full-time business owner, finance manager and coordinator following a tragedy in her family. She struggles to find time to bond with the animals, and respects that their residing mountain cats simply don't know her well enough to enjoy her company. She leaves the hands-on work to her trusted employees.
Tsuyoshi ‘Hunk' Garett: 20, in his last year of college and currently on a year-long transfer to Massachusetts while he chases an engineering degree. He was Diagnosed late in life with dyscalculia, and possesses the uncanny ability to measure parts and tools down to the half-inch with just his naked eye. Theoretical mathematics is his jam. Sums.. sums are not his jam.
Katie 'Pidge' Holt: 18, gifted student in her last year of high school, aiming for placement in Zedtech's interface programming unit. An aptitude for coding and sums is challenged by her tendency to lose sight of the bigger picture. Met Hunk and Lance on an 'excelling students' tour of the university during their first year, where the work they were doing inspired her to follow her heart, despite her family's reservations about her moving out of state for college.

Tumblr media
The Blue Lion flies towards a castle. Four tall pillars accented with a blue that reminds you of the coastal waters of home surround the main structure. A long, ancient, and deteriorating bridge connects the lone plateau the castle sits on to the rest of the world.
As the Lion lands in the large, spacious courtyard before it, it lowers its head to the ground.
"Keep your guard up," Shiro warns.
     "What's wrong?" you ask.
"My crew was captured by aliens once, I'm not going to let it happen again," he says.
The group exits the Lion, your mouths agape and your eyes wide with awe and disbelief. Your footsteps echo loudly within the courtyard and the pearly white stone beneath your feet seems too clean. You look around, hoping to spot someone or something, but you're alone.
Behind you, the Lion stands and roars. Hunk freaks out and hides behind you, screaming that you're going to be eaten. But the doors to the castle groan as they open and the Lion sits back down.
"Oh... the door is open!" Hunk says, coming out from behind you. He looks at the Blue Lion, "I guess I was wrong about you!"
The doors lead to darkness, the sunlight only reaching so far inside. You feel uneasy not knowing what lurks within. Thankfully, Shiro takes the lead and the rest of you cautiously follow. And after a few moments inside, your eyes finally adjust to the darkness. The group stands in a room larger than any you have ever seen; the Blue Lion could easily fit inside.
"Hello!" Hunk calls out and you nearly jump out of your skin.
The group stops in the middle of the room. In front of you, a large staircase leads to an upper floor and the balconies overlooking the room.
"From the size of the Lion, I expected these steps to be bigger," Pidge observes.
"Maybe the castle isn't for the Lion," you say, looking around.
Something powers on above you and creates a ring of light around you. The tiles below you illuminate and a robotic voice speaks, "Hold for identity scan."
A light rises from the ground at your feet and up to your head, scanning you and gathering whatever information is needed.
"Why are we here? What do you want with us?" Shiro interrogates but is left unanswered.
The scanner powers off. The room lights up, the torches along the walls igniting. You can properly see now, and you're realizing just how futuristic the castle is. Its architecture is abstract and alien.
As the long corridor at the top of the steps lights up as well, Pidge shrugs and says, "I guess we go that way."
The group moves forward and you grab onto Lance's arm to make sure he stays close. Knowing him, he would see something and wander off.
"(y/n), I can walk myself," your brother complains.
"You're basically a two-year-old in the body of a teenager," you say.
Lance irks. "You're literally ten months younger than me! What makes you think you're any different?"
You roll your eyes, "I'm much more mature."
"What!?" Lance barks at you, ripping his arm from your grasp. "You drink apple juice and eat animal crackers like they're your freaking life source!"
"So?" you say and raise a brow at him.
The six of you wander into another room. In the center sits a control console and two cryopods standing vertically a few feet behind it. Lance walks up to one of the pods, tapping on the glass. He mutters something to himself.
You and Pidge inspect the control console in the center, or at least that's what you think it is now that you're looking at it. There's nothing on it, and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it on.
Lance screams when the cryopod he stands by hisses loudly, the freezing air from within escaping as the seal breaks. The glass door opens, revealing a beautiful woman with curly white hair and dark skin. She whispers something and her knees buckle beneath her. Lance catches her before she falls to the ground.
She looks up at your brother. "Where am I? Who are you?" she asks.
Lance grins, his cheeks flushing. "I'm Lance, and you're right here in my arms," he flirts.
The woman gives him a quizzical look. She reaches a hand towards his head. "Your... ears?" she says. It's now that you notice her ears are pointed.
     "What about them?" Lance asks.
"They're hideous," the woman grimaces, "What's wrong with them?"
"Nothing's wrong with them! They heard exactly what you said about them- Agh!" Lance grunts as the woman yanks him by the ear and throws him to the ground. She grabs his arm, pinning it behind his back.
"Who are you? Where is King Alfor?" she interrogates. "What are you doing in my castle?"
You feel your heart beat wildly within your chest. Adrenaline rushes through your veins at the sight of your brother in danger. Without a single thought, you charge at the woman to protect him. Your shoulder connects with hers and she falls to the ground. As you stand over Lance, you watch her movements carefully.
"Don't touch him," you growl, "A Blue Lion brought us here and that's all we know."
The woman picks herself up and dusts off the skirt of her dress. "How do you have the Blue Lion? What happened to its Paladin?" she asks, staring at you and Lance for a moment. She glances around the room and sees the rest of the group. "What are you all doing here? Unless- How long has it been?" she rushes over to the control console, placing her hands on top of it.
"So that's how that works," Pidge comments as the control console powers on, a holographic screen popping up.
"Who are you?" Shiro asks, "Maybe we can help?"
You glare at the back of her head as you help Lance off of the floor. Whoever she is, she is not touching Lance ever again.
"I'm Princess Allura of the plant Altea," the woman says and presses a button. The other cryopod opens up and an older man with a bushy orange mustache wakes up.
The man gasps and shouts, "Enemy combatants!" He lunges from the cryopod at you and Lance, and the two of you easily dodge him.
The man catches himself on the other pod, groaning. "Quiznack! You're lucky I have a case of the old 'sleep chamber knees'," he says, turning to you.
Crazy old man, you think to yourself. His detailed explanation of how he would take you down in a fight goes in one ear and out the other. You feel no need to be defensive, because if he was going to fight you he would have done so already.
But your brother decides it would be fun to entertain him.
You leave Lance to the chaos and join the rest of the group near the control panel. You keep your distance from Allura as you watch her pull up some data.
"It can't be," she says with shock.
The man stops and looks at her. "What is it?" he asks.
"We've been asleep for ten thousand years," Allura says, her expression quickly turning to anger. She glares at her hands before turning to the man. "Altea and all the planets in our solar system have been destroyed. Coran... Father is gone. Our entire civilization... It was all Zarkon."
     Shiro's eyes go wide. "Zarkon?"
Allura clenches her jaw. "He was the king of the Galra. A vile creature and enemy to all free people."
Shiro looks down at his robotic arm, flexing the fingers into a fist. "I remember now... I was his prisoner."
"He's still alive? That's impossible," Allura says.
"I can't explain, but it's true," Shiro says. "He's searching for a super weapon called Voltron."
Allura shakes her head, "He's searching for it because he knows it's the only thing that can stop him," she says, "And that's exactly why we must find it before he does-"
The castle's alarms blare and the console's screen flashes red. It shows a video of an alien warship similar to the one you encountered back at Earth.
"A Galra battleship has set its tracker to us!" Coran exclaims.
"How did they even find us?" you ask.
"I bet it's Keith's fault," Lance says, side-eyeing the mullet boy.
Keith rolls his eyes, "Say whatever you gotta say to make yourself feel better," he growls, "After getting us stuck on the other side of a wormhole!"
Lance gets in Keith's face, "I'll stick you in a wormhole!"
Shiro grabs Lance and pulls him back and you do the same with Keith. As Lance raises his arms and feigns innocence, Shiro steps between them, "Stow it, cadets! This is no time to blame others, it's time to work as a team!"
Keith stares your brother down and you can practically feel his blood boil beneath his skin. You tighten your grip on his arm to get his attention, but he doesn't look at you.
Shiro turns to Coran, "How long before they arrive?"
"At their speed?" Coran hums, counting his fingers, "I'd say... a couple of days?"
"Good, let them come," Allura says. "By the time they've arrived, you will have reformed Voltron and together, we will destroy Zarkon's empire."
"Princess," Shiro says, "There are five of these Lions, how are we going to find the rest?"
"Come with me," Allura says and walks out of the room. The group follows her, but you're wary. The last time you told you to go with them, you ended up flying through space halfway across the galaxy... at least you think it's halfway.
Allura enters another large room, glass windows reaching floor to ceiling all around it. The room contains a large control console at the far end of it, six individual chairs towards the entrance, and two waist-high pillars in the center. A large crystal is mounted on the ceiling above them.
"King Alfor connected the Lions to Allura's life force," Coran says, "She alone is the key to their whereabouts."
Allura walks up to the pillars, placing her hands on the crystal blue orbs sitting on top of them. She closes her eyes and the crystal above her shines a light down on her. After a moment, a three-dimensional, holographic map of the universe fills the entire room. Stars, planets, and various other markers float through the air. You smile, amazed at the technology.
"These are... coordinates," Pidge says, curiously reaching a hand through one as it floats by him; the Black Lion. "It looks like the Black Lion is in the same place as the Blue Lion."
"That's because the Black Lion is in the castle," Allura explains.
"To keep it out of Zarkon's hands, King Alfor locked it in the castle," Coran says, "It can only be freed if the other Lions are present."
"As you have found, the Lions choose their pilots," Allura says. "It is a mystical bond and cannot be forced."
You cross your arms, confused. "Then how come the Blue Lion let me and Lance fly it? These things are made to only need one pilot."
Allura furrows her brows, "I... do not know. Perhaps it's because you share the same blood? The quintessence of the pilot is mirrored in their Lion," she says.
You share a look with your brother and he shrugs.
Allura swipes her hand through the air and the map rotates. The Black Lion floats above Shiro's head. "The Black Lion the decisive head of Voltron. It requires a pilot who is a born leader and in control at all times. Someone whose men with follow without hesitation. That is why, Shiro, you will pilot the Black Lion."
"The Green Lion has an inquisitive personality," Allura says, moving the Green Lion to Pidge, "And needs a pilot of intellect and daring. Pidge, you will pilot the Green Lion."
     "The Blue Lion–"
"Hold up, let me guess!" Lance interrupts, "Takes the most handsome slash best pilot of the bunch?"
You smack his arm, silently telling him to knock it off. He hits you back, and it takes every fiber of your being to not give in to your little sister instincts.
Allura moves on, "The Yellow Lion is caring and kind," she moves the Lion's marker over to Hunk, "Its pilot puts the needs of others before his own. His heart must be mighty. Hunk, as the leg of Voltron, you will lift the team up and hold them together."
Allura looks down at her hands where the Red Lion's marker now sits. "The Red Lion is temperamental and difficult to master. It's faster and more agile than the others, but also more unstable," she releases the Red Lion and it floats over to Keith. "It's pilot needs to be someone who relies more on instinct rather than skill. Keith, you will fly the Red Lion."
She continues, "Unfortunately I can't locate the Red Lion's coordinates yet. There must be something wrong with the castle, and after ten thousand years, it might need some work..."
"Don't worry!" Coran interjects, "We'll find it soon. They don't call me the Coranic for nothing!" he pauses, "You know, cause it sounds like mechanic... Coranic... mechanic..."
Allura smiles, laughing softly. As she continues speaking, the Lions floating around the map roar and fly toward the center of the room, forming Voltron. "Once the Lions are united, you will form Voltron, the most powerful warrior the universe has ever known!"
The map dissipates. To be honest, you're a little bummed you don't get a giant robot cat to fly around. But at least you still get to help out... maybe. You're not sure what you can do.
"Wait, how does a Lion turn into a leg?" Hunk asks Allura. "Also, is this going to take a while, because I have to pee. Do you people pee?"
Shiro sighs, "We don't have much time. Pidge and I will go after the Green Lion. Lance, you take Hunk and get the Yellow Lion. Keith and (y/n), you can stay here until the Red Lion is found."
"In the meantime, I'll get the castle's defenses ready," Allura says. "It will be sorely needed."
Coran folds his arms behind his back, "I'll ready a pod and load in the coordinates so you can get to the Green Lion," he says, "But we can only keep the wormholes leading to the other Lions open for two of your Earth hours, so make it quick!"
⁀➷
You and Keith sit on the floor, playing a game of twenty questions while Allura and Coran configure the castle's defenses. You lean back against the wall, puckering your lips as you think.
     "Is it... big?" you ask.
     "Yeah," Keith answers.
     "Is it... an animal?"
     "Sort of?"
     "Is it red?"
     "Yeah."
"Is it the Red Lion?" you ask with a smile and sit up.
Keith kisses his teeth, "Yeah, how'd you guess it so quickly?"
"You just gotta come up with things that are harder to figure out," you say. You place your hands on your knees and Keith takes his turn asking questions.
The two of you get through a few more rounds of the game before the others return. Shiro and Pidge are in a pleasant mood, whereas Lance and Hunk look like they went through Hell. Keith stands and you grab his hand and he helps you up.
     "You made it!" Allura chirps.
Lance rolls his shoulder, groaning. "Yeah, just barely. That was a nightmare..."
"Did you find the Red Lion yet?" Shiro asks.
"Allura just located it," Coran says. "There's a bit of good news and bad news..."
     "Good news first?" you shrug.
"Okay, the Red Lion's nearby!" Coran says, then crosses his arms. "The bad news... it's aboard that Galra ship now orbiting planet Arus."
You grimace, glancing at Keith. He's going to have to go straight through the enemy to get to the Red Lion.
"But wait, good news again," Coran exclaims, "We're Arus!"
     "They're already here!?" Shiro shouts.
"I guess my calculations were a bit off..." Coran says. "Finger counting is more of an art than an actual science."
The room's lights flicker for a moment before a broadcast appears on a large screen. On it is a one-eyed alien with purple fur and fluffy ears. Under other circumstances, you would think he was adorable. But his menacing snarl reminds you what he's here for.
"Princess Allura," the alien speaks, "I am Commander Sendak of the Galra Empire. I come on behalf of Emperor Zarkon to confiscate the Voltron Lions. Turn them over to me, or I will destroy planet Arus."
The broadcast ends and you feel nauseated. You turn to Shiro, hoping for some words of encouragement.
"Alright, let's not panic," he says.
"Not panic?" you look at him with disbelief.
"The scary purple alien thing is driving his battleship towards us!" Hunk exclaims, "We only have four Lions–"
Pidge interjects, "Technically three working Lions."
Hunk pats his shoulder as to say a very sarcastic thank you, "Three working Lions and a castle that's, like, ten thousand years old!"
"Actually," Coran smiles proudly, twirling with his mustache, "It's ten thousand six hundred years old–"
You shoot him a glare, "Not helping Coran!"
"See?" Hunk gestures to Shiro, "Now is the perfect time to panic!"
"Just wait," Allura says desperately, "This castle has a particle barrier we can activate."
Lance smirks, "Girl, you've already activated my par–"
     "Lance!" Shiro growls.
Coran pulls up a diagnostics screen of the Galra battleship. He highlights the canon sitting on top of it and isolates the individual information of it. "The particle barrier won't stand against Sendak's ion canon forever. The Galra's technology must have advanced since the last time we fought..."
     "Panic now?" Hunk asks.
"No," Shiro sighs, "We just need to figure out our plan of action... and figure it out quickly."
"I say we pop through a wormhole and live to see another day," Lance says.
     "I second that," Hunk says.
"Did you not hear Sendak?" you ask, frowning at the two. "He'll destroy the planet if we don't do as he says. We'll be screwing over everything that lives on Arus if we run away!"
"And the Galra will keep destroying planets and capturing prisoners until we stop them," Pidge says.
"But what if Sendak doesn't destroy the planet and follows us through the wormhole?" Hunk asks.
"Are you seriously gonna trust that?" you cross your arms.
"Staying is our only option," Keith says, standing beside you.
"Here's an option, shut your quiznack!" Lance says and the vulgar words nearly kill Allura and Coran on the spot.
"I don't think you're using that word correctly," Keith says, getting increasingly frustrated with your brother.
"What do you know, mullet?" Lance asks, getting in Keith's face.
     "We're staying!" Keith shouts.
     "Leaving!" Lance argues back.
     "Guys, stop!" Shiro barks,
You step between the two, holding your arms out at your sides to keep Lance from simply going around you. You take a few steps back, moving Keith with you. "Can you not go at each other's throats right now?" you growl.
Shiro turns to Allura, "Princess, these are your Lions. You've dealt with the Galra Empire before. You know what we're facing better than any of us. What do you think is the best course of action?"
She hesitates, eyes wide with uncertainty, "I don't know..." she says softly.
Coran rests a hand on her shoulder, "Perhaps your father can help?"
⁀➷
Allura returns a few moments later dressed in an Altean uniform, a determined look on her face. "You five paladins were brought here for a reason. The Voltron Lions are meant to be piloted by you alone. We must fight and keep fighting until we defeat Zarkon. Voltron is the universe's only hope."
"We're with you, Princess," Shiro says.
"Then come with me," Allura says.
She brings everyone to an armory. Five suits of armor sit safe and sound within glass cases, the accent colors of each one coordinating with a Lion.
"Your suits of armor," Allura says.
You watch as your brother runs up to the Blue Lion armor, gawking at it. You frown, majorly feeling left out, and walk over to him.
"This is so cool!" Lance says, glancing back at you. "I wish you could get one too."
     "Yep," you purse your lips.
"Alright," Shiro says, "Let's suit up!"
Once everyone is in their Paladin armor, Allura moves over to a table. She places her hand on the glass top and it slowly disappears, revealing four strange objects.
"These are your bayards. The traditional weapon of the Paladins of Voltron. It takes a distinct shape for each Paladin," she says and they mystically float up and into the hands of their Paladins, transforming into a different weapon.
Hunk gets something similar to a Gatling gun, Keith gets a sword, Lance gets an Altean rifle, and Pidge gets a handblade. But Shiro doesn't get a bayard.
"Shiro, I'm afraid your bayard was lost with its Paladin," Allura says.
He shrugs, "I guess I'll just have to make do."
When everyone comes back to the main control room, the group begins to devise a plan. Coran pulls the Galra battleship diagnostics back up, and Allura talks the rest of you through it.
"You'll need to retrieve the Red Lion from Sendak's ship," she says. "There are various areas of the ship you can enter through, but not without being spotted."
"That's a really big ship," Keith says, "How are we going to know where the Red Lion is?"
Pidge says, "It's not a matter of we, it's a matter of you."
"Yeah!" Hunk says, "Once we get you in there, you'll be able to feel the Red Lion's presence and track it down."
"You know how you felt that crazy energy while we were in the desert?" Lance asks.
"Yeah, you made fun of me for it," Keith frowns.
"And I'm proud of it," Lance smirks, "But turns out, it's just like that."
"Keith," Allura says and he looks at her, "Remember, the Red Lion is extremely temperamental. You'll have to earn its respect."
"Alright," Shiro says, placing a reassuring hand on Keith's shoulder. "Here's our plan of attack...
"The Galra empire knows about the Blue and Yellow Lions, but they don't know about the Green Lion. Hunk and Lance, you'll act as a decoy by pretending to give yourselves up. Keith, Pidge, and I will sneak onto the ship in the Green Lion. Keith and I will find the Red Lion while Pidge guards our exit. Hunk and Lance, you need to find some way to take down that ion canon in the meantime."
"Let me come with," you say, "I want to help."
"I don't think there's anything you can do other than stay here with Allura and Coran," Shiro says. "Besides, you don't have any armor or weapons."
"I'm sure there's some spare stuff," you say, hoping to persuade him. "I don't want to sit here and wait around. I can help you guys find the Red Lion."
Shiro stares at you for a moment, considering. He then sighs, "Fine. Allura, is there another suit of armor (y/n) can use?"

Excerpt of chapter 7: (Context: Lance is a god now, after Karak'nirir inherited her powers to him. Now, Lotor has stepped onto the stage and is complicating things.)
"If Karak'nirir can read his mind and knows what kind of person he is upon first meeting him, then she could just tell him 'no' and leave without trouble. If he's so powerful that he could overtake her, then he doesn't really need her powers now, does he and it won't make a difference to us, since she doesn't interfere anyway."
Lotor would like to argue that the logic of that was very sound and the voice of the blue paladin sounded careless and cheerful as well... but somehow Lotor felt sweat gather on his neck. It was like the blue paladin was marking him as a target, with his piercing blue eyes boring themselves into his soul from an angle.
