On the rewatch I’m finding I like the concept of the Vorlons and the Shadows much better than I like the execution.We have this concept of these two elder races who are supposed to be guiding the younger races but having different points of view on how to best accomplish that. In the beginning they were willing to coexist to some degree but by the time of our story, they’ve gotten so caught up in a petty fight about whose way was better that they lost sight of the fact that they were supposed to be helping those younger races and instead are just using them as fodder to prove themselves right. That’s super interesting.

But what’s actually on screen is the Shadows have a solid viewpoint on how they want to guide these younger races which is absolutely morally repugnant and is not worthy of respect as a valid different opinion. But to their credit, I suppose, they are consistently focused on pursuing those mean that they apparently genuinely believe will help the younger races, and only face off against the Vorlons as much as needed to stop the Vorlons from stopping them from doing what they believe is right.

The Vorlons on the other hand don’t seem to have any philosophy at all regarding how the want to guide the younger races beyond a vague notion of being pro- order and discipline (and obedience, but honestly the Shadows seem a pretty big fan of obedience too). In their actions it seems they’d just as soon not have anything to do with the younger races at all aside from using them to beat the Shadows. So on the one hand the Vorlons are the clear consistent and really only aggressor in terms of the disagreement between the Shadows and the Vorlons with the Vorlons having no real beliefs beyond “fuck those guys,” but given what the Shadows believe and do “fuck those guys” is objectively the morally correct standpoint. It’s only when they suddenly decide the wholesale destruction of multiple planets and billions upon billions of people are acceptable means by which to fuck those guys that the Vorlons become just as bad. (I mean, I don’t love the secret genetic manipulation either, but the Shadows are really fucking evil so there’s space to argue ends and means on that one.)

I realize they aren’t a big fan of this question, but what *do* the Vorlons want? I know that they want to take out all the Shadows and prove their way is the best, but what is “their way”? We get vague statements about liking order and discipline, but the only specific actions of theirs that we see or hear about are those pertaining to stopping the Shadows. But supposing the Shadows did get completely wiped out and the Vorlons had free run at shepherding the younger races, what would they actually do? Surely they must have some guiding philosophy beyond “fuck what those guys are doing”?
