stop telling people that voting doesn't matter stop it stop it

incremental change is frustrating and feels like it gets nothing done but it's how the american government works (for better or for worse) and if you get paralyzed by 'we need to revolt voting doesn't matter' that's one more effective vote for the fascists since it's one vote we lose.

I'd much rather have slow but tangible progress (or even just prevention of fascist progression) than everyone sitting around going 'let's wait for the revolution' when no revolution is likely to come while everything gets worse around us.

Obviously, still do whatever it is else to support the antifascist movement. Donate where you can (and do your research!) Go to protests if you feel safe doing so. But do all that AND vote.

stan was a bernie bro but only in theory. he would put bernie’s posts on his instagram story and caption them with “✊❤️” which is basically nothing but his fans loved it so much that he went through a phase of really caring about voting like he posted pictures of himself at the polls during the primaries with the sticker on his forehead with a whole paragraph about how voting is, like, super important to do. but he got bored of this by the time the generals rolled around and didn’t show up to the polls because he once again no longer believed in voting.

On the subject of Bernie though, he really is a master of political theater because he knew his resolution to stop all foreign aid (all funding meaning including humanitarian aid) to Israel contingent on the kind of investigation that takes months being done within 30 days was going to be impossible to pass but it would make a good pair of headlines when it was introduced and immediately died.

He is not playing politics; he’s playing PR and that’s why he’ll never ever win a vote but he will keep showing up in your feed.

Honestly based on my understanding of the US government and electoral politics I think the reason voting is ineffective is because even if you get a progressive into some office or another, that's only one progressive. Republicans don't suppress votes because all it takes is one good guy to fix the country, they suppress votes because you need a lot of good guys to make meaningful change, and without voter suppression that's actually a feasible thing to do over a long enough period of time

#musings #voting can make a difference but you need a LOT of votes to do that #you need several progressive voices in every branch of the government for them to have the power to actually change anything #if you only vote in presidential elections you're not really contributing to change #because genuine progressives are opposed by both the dnc and rnc #and even if they win and you get somebody like bernie sanders into office #they'd have to get the rest of the government to play ball #if you want a progressive president you need enough of their supporters to also be in government positions that the president can do stuff #also as a side note your local government will likely have more direct impact on your life than the federal government does #voting in local elections and getting involved in local politics is the best way for electoral politics to actually help you #voting alone is absolutely not enough but it's a start and a good supplement to more direct action
