West Kootenay-South Okanagan Voters:

Pals, loved ones and nemeses:

Our country is once again headed to the polls on 🎉October 21 🎉 (mark your calendar! 📆) and while I am not formally affiliated with any of the parties or anything, I have a lot of feelings and some of poor souls have asked me who I’ll be voting for. And SO, I assembled the info to #getoutthevote etc, and without further ado, here is my elevator pitch for my favourite candidate in the West Kootenay-South Okanagan riding.

Dick Cannings. First off, he straight-up looks like he might be Gandalf’s second cousin. The artist (me) has provided a beautiful wizard’s staff and animal companion to help you visualize this below. You’re welcome. Anyway, did he travel from Middle Earth by elfin magic? We may never know 🧙‍♂️

What we DO know is that he is already our MP, and he’s been doing a great job since 2015, especially considering his party didn’t do too well in the last election. MPs don’t always introduce their own bills, but he introduced 3. One was to protect some bodies of water in the kootenays, including some of my favourite places in the world: Christina Lake and the Slocan River 🛶⛵️🏊‍♂️🐟🐟🐟 Another was to promote the use of 🌲 wood 🌲 in public construction (forestry peeps, sawmill folks and construction/carpentry dudes, I’m looking at you 👀). And then finally, to get the Minister of the Environment to respond to a government report about endangered species. That’s just good ethics, honestly. I like a guy that cares about endangered species and that cares about being accountable to the work your government does.

He also held some decently important positions in the NDP - he had the portfolios for Post-Secondary Education AND for Natural Resources. Which makes sense because he was a professor at UBC for 17 years (!!) and this absolute forest wizard has written 12 books about BC’s nature, seven (7!) of which were about birds and bird-watching. I literally did not know there was that much to say about bird-watching 🐦

Annnnnnddddd if all that doesn’t sell you (what, you haven’t seen The Hobbit?), then honestly... do it for the Dick jokes 😉 (I mean, his name is Dick and he promotes wood... could you possibly make that lower hanging fruit???)
