we all see marriage as a closer relationship between two people who are engaged, a lifetime with your best friend and the love of your life.

In my country, we take it a whole step further to show how you love and respect your future spouse along with their family. ‘Dowry’ as it’s known in English is when a bride price is paid towards the bride’s family for how much the groom knows his future wife’s worth but it's also his & his family's promise to maintain the lifestyle her family has given her. Not too long ago, it was negotiated with cows as cows cost sooo much money.

We call these, Lobola negotiations. You send your uncles to your fiancé’s maternal home and her uncles will participate in the negotiations, games are also played to lighten the mood.

Through all of this, it’s the bride’s most happiest and important days. If you fuck up, her family will not give you blessings to continue to get married.

Important activities such Vula Mlomo are vital to a lobola negotiation. It’s the act of the bride’s family keeping silent as they wait by the home gate with the groom’s family and they have to pay whatever the bride’s family sees fit to just enter the yard, same has to be done with the uncles.

Its translation is literally “Open Mouth”, meaning you need to pay up some good money before you’re let in.

Saying clan names is also very important btw.

After all that is done, it’s time to celebrate! Bring in the cows (or don’t, we’re modern now) and have a big Lobola Lunch with friends and family to celebrate your marriage being recognised by the elders. Traditional wear is very important too so make sure to look fabulous!

BBC announces more world-famous names for Coronation Concert:

The BBC has announced that singer-songwriters Paloma Faith and Tiwa Savage, rock ‘n’ roll legend Steve Winwood, internationally renowned pianist Lang Lang and pop star Nicole Scherzinger will be part of the line-up for the Coronation Concert on Sunday 7th May. They will be joined by singer Olly Murs, Pete Tong Ibiza Classics, featuring Vula and JERUB, and winner of The Piano, Lucy, whilst Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor will deliver a spoken word performance.

The eclectic mix of artists are part of the line-up alongside previously announced performers including Take That, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Andrea Bocelli, Sir Bryn Terfel, Freya Ridings, Alexis Ffrench and a collaboration of five Royal patronages.

The BBC also announced that Tom Cruise, Dame Joan Collins and Disney’s Winnie the Pooh will feature in the concert. They, along with Sir Tom Jones, Bear Grylls OBE and Oti Mabuse are amongst the stars who will appear in a series of pre-recorded sketches and segments revealing little-known facts about The King.

The concert will take place in the grounds of Windsor Castle and will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, as well as BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

You can see the bags under her eyes. You can feel the exhaustion in her soul, the weight on her shoulders is weighing you down too. You see the army of ancestors she’s carrying with her. The grief she carries around swirling above her like a dark cloud.

You shift your eyes towards the door. Three female soldiers you assume are anxiously waiting for their Queen. Confusion buzzes around them.

Your eyes travel back to Ramonda, whose standing in one place. Not breathing. You’re sure she doesn’t even realise how sorrowful she looks.

As much as you would love to leave her to her devices you know that one of the big reasons she was able to find you was because your ancestors have already found each other.

This was bound to happen, under any circumstances she was supposed to come back to you this way. It doesn’t make it any less painful but you know if you were to let them go back, without even a reading you’d be dishonouring yourself, the legacy you’ve built and every ancestor that’s been in your shoes. You’d be committing a great crime against your descendants.

You raise your head upwards. As if asking why it had to be you and today of all days. Like if you position your head that way long enough so that when you finally lower your gaze back to Ramonda somehow she and her squad would magically disappear.

Sighing you clench your wrists twice in effort to gather strength.

“Zozibini sana’ lwami. Vula umnyango,bangene aba’bantu ngaphandle!. Ndiyakcela”

Ramonda visibly relaxes…

"I guess, that's like the basics of my life." Zizzi would nodded her head gently now as she was leaning back also eating some cherry pie herself. She would look between her shoulders now before she was humming. "Hmm, this is some good pie." She said as she smiled a bit. Her tendrils were wiggling a bit.
