languages: I’m a native English speaker, but I also took 4 years of latin in high school (so now I can understand like 85% of the demonic chanting in horror movies) and I like to read wikipedia articles on the grammar structures of different languages. 

celebrity crush: here’s the weird thing about me... I’m attracted to fictional characters, but not usually the actors that play them? like... they’re very different people to me? Even if they’re identical in appearance? I think it’s because mannerisms are a lot of what attracts me to someone and actors who are doing their jobs right have completely different mannerisms in character than they do irl. Like, i’ll still think they’re hot, but I won’t have a sustained crush on them.  

random fact:  I hate random facts? Is that a random fact? No? Fine. I never know what people want from these things. But here goes: I’m bisexual. I’m on the autism spectrum. I dress pretty goth irl (or well, I did when there were places to go to) and I’m still mad that they said pluto isn’t a planet, even though it’s been over a decade.

Do you use transliteration in your calligraphy?

Na'Shaya! 🖖 I do transliterate things like proper names or nouns that Vuhlkansu borrows from Federation Standard English, but most pieces are fully in Vuhlkansu.

Is strong negation in Vulcan language something that can't easily be edited to be positive, like it can be in English/Standard? I'm looking at a story situation where someone is saying they do not consent to certain actions, and they're being very emphatic, and aware that they may be being recorded by people who would take those actions. (I'm trying to explain without getting into a page and a half of background and other stuff.)

Double negatives aren't a thing in Vulcan, if that's what you're asking?

Hello!! I was trying to translate a quote into Vulkhansu for the first time and I realized that I don’t know how adverbs are in the language. Is there an equivalent of '-ly' in Vulkhansu? Or is it pretty similar to adjectives where you just add '-ik' to the end of the root word? Dif-tor heh smusma! 🖖

Na'shaya! Most adverbs in Vulcan are just the root word, non-combining, placed before the verb, so they never end in -ik. Of course there are exceptions but those should be pointed out in the dictionary. Here are some examples:

Tor-yehat lasha au fa-gad. (they will possibly arrive tomorrow)

Nuh'sahris hal-tor du. (You are going too fast)

Mos stariben nash-veh. (I speak softly)

I am 100% sure I translated it at some point in the past but I couldn't find it! Probably someone else already has... Anyway I thought it deserved me doing a new a calligraphy piece so here it is:

wait lmao sorry i have another question 😭 i understand that vuhlkantra is the word for vulcans (race) (tho i've also seen whl'q'n?), would the same word also refer to one individual vulcan, or would that be different? tysm <3

Hello again! No problem, please feel free to ask whatever you need! 😊

Vuhlkantra means the Vulcan race or "vulcankind", because -tra is a suffix to make collective nouns. For example, the name for "ocean" in Vulcan is "masutra" ("masu"=water), and the same suffix can be used to make collective names of other groups ("komihntra" for example). To refer to a single individual Vulcan you would say "Vuhlkansu", just like the language!

Whl'q'n is used less frequently because it comes from the Marketa conlang, and Vuhlkansu is the conlang made by the VLI. I hope that makes sense?

Hi! When transliterating Vulcan into English characters, you just follow regular English grammar rules and capitalise the first letter of each sentence and proper names only 😊

hey, I've got a question thay you may've talked about already? but I wanted to know what was the plural of t'hy'la? because I know for sure I read it somewhere, I think it was smth like t'hy'lara or 'la-ra or 'la'ra or smth like that? maybe it was just this one person who knew enough Vulcan to know how to pluralize words or smth, but like, t'hy'la is singular right? jim is spock's t'hy'la, they are [plural], right??? hope you can help, thanks!

Na’Shaya! So in Vulcan language you form plurals by adding the suffix -lar, so the plural of t’hy’la would be either t’hy’lar or t’hy’lalar. Because this sounds a bit silly, the VLI presented t’hy’lu as a possible, irregular plural form for this specific word. The thing is that Vulcan is... very lax with its plurals. They’re not grammatically necessary for cohesion and they tend to be ommitted if they can be understood from the context (for example, a plural form never follows a number, because it is logical that it’s already plural, if that makes sense). So Jim is Spock’s t’hy’la, but they both can be just t’hy’la too! LLAP! 🖖

Do you happen to know of any Vulcan holidays/celebrations?

I do! Here are some Vulcan holidays:

-Kal Rekk, an important but modest holiday spent in solitude, sitting in silence and meditating about your lapses in logic and control over the previous year.

-Tal-Shanar, a holiday that no offworlder has ever been allowed to see, and for this reason very little is known about it. It seems to be a very spiritual celebration focusing on self-examination in respect to the violent history of the Vulcan race.

-The Festival of T’Plana-Hath, celebrating the life and works of this famous Vulcan historian and philosopher. It also involves a good amount of contemplation and meditative practices.

-Uzhaya wak-krus, the season of renewal. A spring festival celebrated in some of the provinces of Vulcan like Raal and Shi’Kahr. Originally a time of reflection and restorative meditation and exercises at the beginning of the calendar year, it seems to have gained with tourists and Starfleet Academy students looking for a “spring break” equivalent.

-Surak’s Memorial (not to be confused with the monument of the same name located in Shi’Kahr).

There are of course other smaller, unofficial celebrations and special occasions such as bonding ceremonies, local music festivals, etc. And finally, an honorable mention:

-Rumarie, a pagan festival that has not been celebrated since the 14th century. It involved feasting, naked dances and presumably other types of (now unacceptable) debauchery.

It says Rata Tafar Tapan, which translates to Concept, Discipline and Process. They're basic principles of Surakian philosophy and logic and it's quite common to see them on Vulcan robes, so keep your eyes peeled as you watch more Trek because you might spot them again!

I'm working on a fic where Jim speaks Vulcan but like it's sort of a surprise until he whips that line out, and I wanted some pointers. How would you feel about “Kuv nah-tor du ta ri kup stariben nash-veh gen-lis Vuhlkansu, nam-tor du lafoshik.” (If you think that I cannot speak the Vulcan language, you are mistaken). It doesn’t have quite the same ring as “bold of you to assume”, but that wording feels quite... emotionally charged to me 😛 I think most Vulcans would be offended to be told they are mistaken as the implication is that they did not arrive to a logical conclusion...

When writing in the calligraphic script (sorry idk it’s official name), how do you know when to start a new column? When do you start a new row?

Na’Shaya! Thanks for the ask!

You start a new column simply when you run out of space (much like a new line in a horizontal language like English). Calligraphers will try to not split words in half, except on some occassions with compound words. Depending on the piece and the text some calligraphers may choose to try and fit a sentence on each column or to split it in a specific place, but this is not necessary, specially if you’re writing a longer text.

If you start a new column but you’re continuing the sentence from the previous one, you will need to connect the column to the row line with a mark called a kik (”hook”). You may also choose to place a kliton (arrow) at the end of the previous sentence to let the reader know that the sentence is not finished, but the kliton is usually skipped in more formal texts.

If you start a new column that is also the start of a new sentence, the column will connect with a different mark, called a fo (”shell”), and the last character of the previous sentence will end in a longer stroke called a wu-harr (”long tail”).

By “a new row” I’m guessing you mean a brand new horizontal line with its own kharat-ulidar, if that’s the case then it would just be when you’re starting a new page or a whole new calligraphy piece. Sometimes though, calligraphers will start a new row to mark an ongoing sentence, and attach it to the column where it starts.

This all sounds really confusing to explain but check out the example below to see how the rows and columns connect and the different symbols used, I hope that is easier to understand! (the text is the About section from the Korsaya website).

By the way, the alphabet’s name in Vulcan is Vanu-tanaf-kitaun (”traditional calligraphy”), but everyone will know what you mean if you say calligraphic script :)
