This little red #wagon is a VW Fox, a now-rare relic of an unusual plan of VW's to offer a U.S. model that slotted in below the Mk2 Golf in price, equipment, and size. The Mk2 was a larger and, by the late 80s, appreciably more expensive car than the Mk1/Rabbit had been. But VW still wanted an entry-level offering. But for the same reasons the Golf was now pricier (exchange rates), so too would have been the Polo/Derby, which filled the entry level role in Europe. - Instead of importing those, #VW of America turned to #VWdoBrasil - which had developed its own platform for such a car on the bones of the old B1 Audi 80. The Gol, which replaced the Brasilia in VW's Brasilian lineup, was a modern front-drive small car that was at first powered by the old air-cooled Brasilia engine, but gained modern, water-cooled engines a few months into its run in 1980. - For it’s new entry-level car, VWoA tapped the #Gol and renamed it the Fox; dusting off an old U.S. Audi name from a few years earlier - ironically the same B1 that the Gol’s “BX” platform was based on. Cheap to import, the Fox was aimed at cars like the Yugo and the Hyundai Excel. All Foxes used a 1.8 liter four similar to that in other U.S. VWs, and they came as a 2- or 4-door sedan, or the cool 2-door wagon. The Gol was also offered as a hatch, but it was not imported here. - It became clear very quickly that the Fox was ill-suited to the U.S. It offered no automatic (for the first 2 years, only four-speeders were offered) or power steering even as options, and people expected much from VWs. The quality and refinement of the cars were also below VW's usual standards - but it was still decent to drive. In Brasil, It was cheap, and the 2-door wagon was unique, but Honda Civics, and used Rabbits and Jettas, were only a few hundred dollars more. - The wagon was dropped in 1991 and the remaining cars given a facelift, and the soldiered on selling in small numbers into 1993. In Brasil, the original Gol continued into 1994 and was revised into an updated version that lasted from 1994-2013. VWoA hasn't tried anything similar since, despite legions of enthusiasts asking for the Polo, Lupo, and Up! over the years.
