i 100% agree about the loads of fantastic authors in this fandom. i wanted to mention 2: s6115 - i love how they get to the absolute heart of the characters and express their emotions, and they also balance it with humor very well H_Belle - i would call their writing…. snappy? idk if it's the right word but they keep the writing tight and moving and intriguing

For 10: anything by ScarlettStorm, her writing has a really solid voice! Also paired wings soaring by typefortydeductions (E, 33k, WangXian, Modern, slice of life, domestic bliss, angst, fluff, smut, hurt/Comfort, kissing, bdsm, artist WWX, poetry translator LWJ, slight somnophilia) has a very unique and wonderful narrative style.

I would recommend ScarlettStorm, who has great found families and depth of character and a particular breezy style I like. Also Ariaste, who has a similar style and excels at getting the most out of a premise. Also Sami, in particular the Paper Moon series because of her thoughtfulness about character development and how that drives the plot and the neat way she weaves the story together and has excellent narrative consistency. One more - hansbekhart is a tremendously skilled writer who, like orange_crushed (recced above), can just hit you with a brick of emotions. Highly recommend both authors as those who can drag deep, vast emotions out of you and leave you feeling as if you're a different person after you've read their fic. In particular, I suggest Roots Grow Riotous by hansbekhart.

for an example of fantastic writing, Twelve Moons and a Fortnight series by stiltonbasket on ao3 is EXCELLENT (intricate layered worldbuilding in vast timeline, awesome imagery and characterizations and build towards pivotal scenes). Also I personally love Cradle by dragonesque (one of best/fav show down diss scenes, politics) & The Murder of Crows by cerbykerby; to name a few

A/N: Not Requested,  Sum short n sweet for the kids🖤🖤🖤 I still have a tooon of requests I need to post which I'm sorry for the delay about, they are otw pinkie swear okay onto the story!

Growing up Christmas was always your favorite time of the year, from the sweater weather to the permanent smell of coco and peppermint, it all wrapped around you like a blanket, comfy and simple.

Being the hopeless romantic you were, the cheesy things couples did around this time always called to you, back then it felt like a members-only club you couldn't get in but now you had Caspian, someone with an even bigger boner for all things rom-com than yourself, and really, who better to share these things with?

Cas has a very similar line of thought the moment he steps outside and his breath can be seen in the cool air, his mind quickly began to race around looking for the best way to celebrate the year coming to an end, his best year at that because the universe had gifted you to him.

In no time he opened the triple-locked folder on his phone, it contained intensely specific dates for you two, all detailed with your most likely reactions and how much you'd enjoy said activity. At this point, he had a rough draft for every occasion.

It took a lot of strength but that morning he managed to force himself away from your sleeping form without a kiss. He'd been planning this specific date since he found out about your love for the season, now was just the best time to execute it.

Having grown up in a full house of 7 there was always food being made, usually by the house matriarch with Caspian dutifully at his mama's hip, long before the rest of his family would rise, so he'd mastered the art of cooking quiet enough not to wake someone.

He made sure to time it all perfectly to be finished around the usual moment your pretty (e/c) eyes started to flicker open and bless him with another day together, the breakfast would be themed and like most of what he made, almost look too pretty to eat

Almost anyway.

"G'mornin Sugar. You're free today right?" He would ask setting the tray on his side of the bed before taking your hand to his lips, unable to resist himself, he would press small kisses into your knuckles as you agreed, making sure to act happily surprised when you respond as if he hadn't already seen and memorized your schedule for the week.

"What did ya have in mind hun?" You asked rubbing the sleep from your eyes, a gesture he couldn't help but coo at, as if reading your mind he gently lifted the steaming drink before you, tipping the smooth coffee gently into your parted lips, at first his little habit of hand feeding you was a little jarring but he was just so endearing and sweet it wasn't long before you indulged him, after all it wasn't so bad being doted on like a princess.

His smile was worth it all, the pleased little hum you'd hear whenever you did something he enjoyed which, if we're being honest here, was most things, had a familiar warmth settling in your tummy.

"I wanna take you out. Go get our tree from this cute little farm, it's a thirty-minute drive so I wanted you full before we left."

Something about the language he used had heat rising to your face. Ours. The simple word holding so much weight.

His gaze held you in place as he took you in, always staring that one, if it were anyone else you'd have been uncomfortable but he made you feel like artwork being examined.

He'd installed bedroom camera's for a few reasons, one of his favorite's though, had to be the ability to capture and replay moments like now, where you'd get that awe'd look on your face, completely surprised someone would do something like this for you- but he would, he'd do anything to keep his soulmate happy, this was nothing in his mind, not with what he had laid out for the two of you down the line.

Our boy is a long-term planner, he knows how he's going to propose, where he'll take you for your honeymoon, and the kind of house you'd buy together(read: the house he's going to buy for you both after he finds out exactly what you like) the bakery you'll open and co-own, the dog you'll have(he's planning for one but would literally get you an emu if u asked for it- the man is flexible okay?)

"Thank you for breakfast baby, did you already eat?" You pressed a small kiss into his hand, returning his previous action much to his delight. Your free fingers delicately danced along the road his freckles mapped out on his skin, tracing the little constellations with a sigh you relished in the peace he brought with him everywhere.

"Oh I'm gonna eat- soon as you're done," the wicked grin on his handsome face twitched with intent for a split second before returning to that warm look from before. The kneading grip he had on the meat of your inner thigh told you everything you needed to know about his plans. "N' I've been a good boy so, I get my breakfast in bed."

Felix Lee — a bad liar with a savior complex. He’s more than that though. He’s in love with love, a staunch believer of fairy tales. He’s an idealist, a sentimental dreamer. He makes love look like an art form, looking at the world through rose tinted glass.

And you? A realist.

Turning corners at the last but one crossing of the junction, Felix decides: love has an expiration date. He falls in love easily and the fall-out is painful.

With each step towards, he is dreading being home. Maybe it’s you. Maybe it’s what he is yet to say. Maybe it’s all the expectations weighing his back from Chan, Jisung and Minho. But whatever it is, it’s fucking unfair.

Time ticks by painfully fast. His watch feels heavy on his wrist, it’s ticking in sync with his heartbeat, in sync with his steps, in sync with his derailing thoughts. And this synchronization is distressing.

And soon enough, he’s there — that one room apartment he’s been dreading. You on the sofa, cross legged, so unassuming, so fucking indifferent. Your eyes leave the TV to meet his, some rom-com continuing mindlessly, and you smile.

He does too, instinctually.

Your eyes are red-rimmed. Your cheeks tinted red. Have you been crying? His resolution all but crumbles.

Because despite who you are, despite his fragile ego, you are the tears of his crying.  You are the starlight in the evening, the smell of the rain. You’re spilt coffee and his teenage spirit — his twin flame. And Felix is a hopeless fucking romantic.

But he’s tired. He’s far too exhausted. And he needs to let go of every emotion he has left unexpressed.

 “W-we need to talk.”

Felix curses himself for the stutter. His voice is unfaltering, his stutter being his only show of vulnerability. He’s never heard himself like this. He has never been like this. But it all comes back to you — you bring out the best in him. You bring out the worst in him.

He watches your smile drop, as you shuffle further away to make space for him on the sofa. It’s cold, this proximity no longer giddying for him. He feels your eyes on him, intense and scrutinizing.

He inhales deeply, holding his breath for counted seconds before releasing it in a staggered exhale. It’s unhealthy, he tells himself. Whatever it is between you and him, it’s fucking unhealthy.

“This,” he says, gesturing the little space between both of you. “This is not working. And you know it.”

His eyes sting. It isn’t supposed to be this hard, goddammit. Words are caught in his throat, so easy to swallow, so hard to let go.

“Felix, you—”

“Don’t,” he interrupts. He sees you; sees your eyes well up, hands moving quickly to wipe any possible show of vulnerability. He wants to reach for you, wipe off your tears and hold your face in his hands — index finger behind your ear as always — but he stops himself.

“We’ve been through this. And whatever this is, it’s eating me alive from the inside, goddammit,” his voice breaks, a deep baritone and occasional silence. “And you know it. I love you; I love you; I fucking love you. But this? I can’t do it anymore.”

“Felix.”

You sound timid, broken. Nothing he has ever heard from you, ever. Felix walks a tightrope with you, his name is enough to make him consider swallowing his words to have you back in his arms.

But he won’t. He cares far too much.

“Yeah?”

“I don’t want to do this.”

You. It’s always been about you. Since the day he exhausted his collected confidence in sliding his phone to you across the table for you to save your number in his contacts, it’s always been about you. He is an expert in making himself smaller to watch you grow, to see you flourish. It has always been like that.

Felix doesn’t love. He falls in love; dives in headfirst and skids ten feet deeper. And now, he was breathless, drowning. He wanted out.

“I need to do this.”

You stare at him, wordless. Perhaps even speechless. You’re a wreck — smudged mascara, swollen eyes, tearstained cheeks. Hell, he’s a mess — a well represented mirror image of you.

“Do you want me to leave?” He asks. He’s prepared to leave, only awaiting permission.

“Yeah.”

He stands up, quick, no hesitation. He dusts off his sweatpants, fixing the creases before glancing at you: a mess through and through. He moves to leave, the open door so inviting, only to be stopped by your voice.

“Felix?”

“Yeah?”

“I hate you.”

Unexpressed emotions never die, brewing within you to show up in their ugliest forms. Felix, convinces himself.

The walk to the dorms is exhilarating and liberating, somehow all at once. The winter breeze blowing unforgivingly at his face was his stone-cold grounding to reality. Felix is a dreamer, of the sentimental sort; but this flat sobriety, he chooses to indulge in.

How long has it been? Days, weeks, months since he had spent a night in that crammed bedroom, a shared space for him, Hyunjin and Minho. He had priorities, places to be. Every trail of thought returns to the same thing — you.

Chan is the first face he sees — of course, worried, tense, empathetic. Chan hopes for the best and prepares for the worst. And so he did today, at the sight of Felix’s red rimmed eyes.

“I told her.”

Realisation. These three words are simple but explanatory. Chan all but combusts, his grin stretching from ear to ear, dimples at full display. And if Felix spots correctly, a touch of pride.

“You guys are done?”

“We’re done.”

Done. Such an easy way to put it. So complete within itself. A clean end with a well punctuated full stop. Nothing like what he feels.

“Fucking hell, Felix.”

A third voice joins: Minho. Rejoicing. Positively fucking glowing. What did they all spot that Felix managed to miss?

He is enveloped in hugs. Once. Twice. Thrice. Each of the boys holding him for what seems like forever. As if he were a lost child with his found family. Staggered breaths and hearty laughs. They loved him for him. Lee Felix, not Felix from Stray Kids.

12:35. And he's alone again, this time by choice. He lies on his back, wide eyes staring at the glow in the dark stickers peeling off from the ceiling. He missed this. He missed the forced proximity the dorms brought to him and his members. He missed having a life that stretched beyond you.

He can hear Minho's breathing from the bunk below, slow and sustained, somehow giving him a sense of tranquility.

Minho positively hated you. From day one, when you walked into the dorms, your hand carefully held in Felix's. And Felix had smiled, introducing you to the members with the title: my girlfriend. And you had smiled too, staring up all wide-eyed and innocent at Chan, Hyunjin and Minho.

Chan and Hyunjin had indulged for their friend's sake, breaking into wide grins and cheers of "Lix, you got her, man," and "She's sweet, take care of her, Lix."

Minho only stared, eyes narrow and speculative as he took in your appearance. A white Celine t-shirt — Felix's — tucked neatly in a black pencil skirt, fucking pretentious.

And Felix had glared at Minho, for the first time, before he finally obliged and smiled at you, quickly excusing himself and slipping into his dorm room.

Minho knew. So did Hyunjin and Chan. They had counted every red flag he had missed, looking at you through rose tinted glasses.

Felix remembers inviting you to watch their dance rehearsals. You sitting comfortably on the sofa while he worked on the muscle memory of the choreography. Minho corrected him; once, twice, thrice. His shoulders were too stiff, his footwork too messy, his beginning was off beat and his isolations not sharp enough.

He could feel your eyes on him, sometimes glazing over to Minho. His ears only burnt a darker shade of scarlet with every mistake.

He remembers Minho pulling him to the corner by the sleeve of his shirt.

"This is not working out, man. Either spend time with your girl or work on what pays our bills. Not both at once."

Felix saw red. What was his fucking problem with you? Deep breaths to talk himself down from all the choice words that were yet to be thrown at Minho. He clenched and unclenched his fists behind his back.

And smiled, so alluring. So easy.

"Yes, Hyung."

But Felix was a hopeless romantic. His problems subside when he looked back at you. Love fixes everything.

Now he knew ofcourse, the bittersweet aftertaste of your love still so fresh in his mouth. Love can't fix everything. Hell, love can't fix a damn thing.

"I can't believe you guys can dance like that," you lean back, your shoulder pressed to his. "Like how you move? It was so. . ."

Your voice wanes as you look for the best way to describe what you had seen.

Felix had grimaced, memories of Minho's corrections still fresh in his mind, " Wasn't that good. My shoulders were stiff and clumsy footwork."

You grin, relentless.

"But still. And Minho. Fuck, how is he so . . . fluid?"

He shrugs, half-smile still on his lips. He did admire Minho for the sort of unwavering effort he put in.

"He's like that. There's so much to learn from him."

You're talking. And Felix is not listening. His eyes wander to your face, the way your lips move, your hands gesticulating wildly. He likes you. He likes how you look in his hoodie — so cute, tousled and relaxed. He can't help himself.

You're cut off mid sentence, words caught in your throat as he holds your face in his hands, his lips assuredly on yours. He handles you so carefully, as if you're a cut of glass waiting to be shattered further. His vision wavers and his heart swells. He's kissing you.

He pulls back, breath staggered and heartbeat uneven. You're staring at him, blinking.

"Maybe I should watch you and Minho rehearse again sometime."

And fuck, if only he knew.

There were nights spent going out, getting drunk in the corners of shitty clubs with music even shittier. But he'd do it, just for you.

And those nights, where he'd have to carry you home. Despite you hanging off of some stranger's arm not less than an hour ago, the smell of drink that stranger bought you still lingering in the air.

Nights when he had to hold your hair back as you were bent over the sink, whispering his constant assurance of "it'll be okay" despite being the one without a drop of sleep the past week through.

And your voice would break the silence while you both sat with your backs pressed to the cold tiles of the bathroom wall, so timid, so fragile.

"Felix?"

"Hmm?"

"I love you."

And he all but falls in love again.

He had never smiled brighter. Despite his muscles aching from hours of practice, his smile stretched from ear to ear, so complete with the rose blush on his cheeks.

Love fixes everything. It always did.

Felix was past the point of a breakdown. Seeing you lie so unruffled on the couch in that pink satin clubbing dress he bought you — so unbothered. Alcohol in your breath, your arms littered with bruises from you running into furniture while dazed and most importantly, the big red bruise on your throat that stared back at him so tauntingly.

It was a pretty colour. Almost turning a purple-lilac in its edges, so close to the colour of your dress. But all appreciation of the colour went out the fucking window because he wasn't the one who gave it to you.

He was tired, muscles aching from the three hour long practice session when he had gotten a call from Yeji. And so utterly in love, he had drived half an hour out of town to that god forsaken club to pick you up.

Your words are so soft under your breath, terribly close to going unheard.

"Felix?"

"Yeah?"

"I love you so fucking much."

And that's was when he decided, it was too fucking much. You. Him. Everything.

And now? Months later, Felix is still learning.

He is learning to forgive the past — that the most beautiful of things come to an end; that sometimes time isn't right, sometimes the person isn't right, you weren't right.

He is learning to wake up alone in the middle of his bed, that just because he doesn't love doesn't mean he didn't love. He's learning how to hold his own hand, how to take up space by himself, how to stop filling voids and start healing them.

“What do you mean you’ve never seen snow before?”

Hyunjin sat on your couch as you were finishing loading your dishwasher before your weekly movie date night. He’d already done his share of the prep work (busting out the comfy blankets and bringing dinner) while you were carefully setting things in to be washed--after about a thousand apologies for letting time get away from you and prolonging rom-com hours. He’d mentioned that it started snowing that morning, and since it was your first winter living in a place where it’d snow... you’d made the confession casually enough.

“I mean,” you said, closing your dishwasher, “I’ve never seen snow before.”

“Really?”

You looked up from the settings you were fiddling with, “Why would I lie?”

Hyunjin frowned at the statement, before looking back up at you. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, baby, I’m sure I’ve never seen snow before. I haven’t left the apartment today since it’s cold out.”

He said nothing in return, and you could see the gears turning in his mind. Without a word, he stood up, walking over to grab his coat.

“Wait, are you mad?” You asked, “Like--I know some people are surprised, but I’ve never had anyone get mad before--”

“We’re going out,” he said.

“What about our food?”

“We can heat it back up,” he said, pulling his jacket on. “I want you to see snow.”

You nodded toward the window, “We can watch it from here--”

“No!” He pouted, making his way over to you, “I want to go outside and dance with you in the snow,” he said outright, taking your hands in his own. “Please? Just for a few minutes? If you hate it, we can come back inside.”

You almost said no because movies and cuddling and dinner seemed nicer... but Hyunjin pouted at you, and you scoffed before calling him out on playing dirty. He knew that if he pouted, you’d be more likely to give in--there was a reason you refused to go to art stores with him now. You were meant to keep him from dropping too much money on supplies, and all it’d take was him giving you one sweet look for you to budge and agree to buy him a new sketchbook or a new watercolor set.

(Truthfully, you liked spoiling your boyfriend in little ways like that--as much as it hurt your wallet sometimes...)

You let out a sigh, “Fiiine.” And then you leaned in, pressing a kiss against his lips, “You’re lucky you’re handsome.”

He cracked a smile, pulling you back in for a longer kiss before letting you go change. “I love you,” he called out, softer than ever at the romantic ideas he was spinning in his head. You’d called back something about how he’d better make this perfect, and Hyunjin laughed (sounding more in love than ever).

Maybe he’d dip you down while dancing with you, kissing you again while smiling into it. Just to maximize on the romantic idea playing in his head.

The dialogue is EVERYTHING; sassy, quick-witted, and all too entertaining. There's somewhat sexy sword-fighting (come on, sword-fighting is always sexy, but when your queer crush is schooling you, it's all the better), fake dating (does it count as fake dating when you've been betrothed since childhood?), and heart-warming found family vibes. The queer panic and nervous humor were all too relatable, even though the story is set in medieval times. That's a true feat; you can connect with the queer chaos, even if you're shooting heart-eyes in the 21st century.

💜 That being said, let's talk about Gwen and her lady knight. I mean, get ready to absolutely SWOON alongside Gwen. Lady Bridget Lechlair is all fierce confidence (a necessity, when everyone has an unpopular opinion of you simply because you're a woman, regardless of your badass abilities), but she's also an enigma with a gooey interior. I loved seeing Gwen find her confidence through Bridget, discovering her voice and standing up for them both when necessary. Though Gwen is a royal, she's questioned her inner power and authority, as everyone around her has made it clear her only worth is in her marriage to Arthur as a political move. Spending time with Bridget gives Gwen the change to realize she's worth so much more. Though the story's quick wit and banter stands out, I think this character development is the story's real strength. Sometimes, you need someone who believes in your potential before you can see it yourself.

🦇 The only real hang-up for me was the pacing. The ending felt especially rushed, which was a disappointment after the queer chaos dragged a bit. I wonder if the writer paused for a moment, then returned to finish the latter half of the story. I also found the relationship between Arthur and Gabriel (Gwen's brother) a little underwhelming when it had so much potential at the start. Regardless, I appreciated all the queer hijinks and humor.

🦇 Recommended for fans of Heartstopper, Rainbow Rowell's Simon Snow trilogy, Red, White, & Royal Blue, and the TV show Merlin. Get ready for a swoon-worthy, medieval mess of pining and romance!

31 Days of Spooky Movies 2023: Week 1

Every October I make it my mission to watch at least 1 spooky movie every day (without rewatching anything watched in a previous October).

In case anyone is looking for some ideas on what to watch this month, here's what I've watched so far, in the order I watched them.

Dumplings (2004)

A Hong Kong horror movie about a former actress who will go to any lengths to keep her looks so as to retain her position of wealth and power.

There's a lot of interesting themes in this one. Using consumption as a metaphor for how systems of power use and abuse those under them is a common theme in Chinese literature and it's deployed quite artfully here.

2. Skinamarink (2022)

An experimental art movie about two kids who wake up in the middle of the night to find all the doors and windows of the house have disappeared and that they're all alone.

You are either going to love this one or hate it. But if you give it a try I recommend committing to it. You've gotta go lights off, by yourself, phone off for this one to work. It's definitely an experimental arty movie so...umm, strap in for a weird experience. But at its heart it's trying to recreate in you that experience of being a little child and afraid of the dark and not quite sure if you're awake or still dreaming.

3. The Thing from Another World (1951)

Before there was John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) there was The Thing from Another World. Both adaptations of the 1938 novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell. Here a group of scientists and Air Force officials discover a crashed alien ship in the arctic ice. But things take a turn for the worse when they bring back the body of an extraterrestrial to study only to find it isn't actually dead.

This movie somehow manages to keep all the most boring bits from the novella while also throwing out all the parts of the story that are actually interesting. Gone is the shape shifting alien. Here we have a lurching plant based alien (aka a big dude in a weird costume) that looks more Frankenstein than Thing.

4. Dave of the Dead (2020)

A cheaply animated movie about a zombie who works in an outer space fast food restaurant who has to try and get the money back from Dracula after the count dines and dashes on him.

The animation on this movie is SO cheap. They honestly don't even try to animate facial expressions nor match dialogue to mouth flap. Not to mention there's only the semblance of a story here. But the worse thing about it is that it is aimed at kids and there's a weirdly strong anti-labor stance to the whole thing.

5. The She Beast (1966)

When her car plunges into a lake a woman becomes possessed by the spirit of the witch that had been drowned there in the 18th century and wants her revenge.

The movie is said to star Barbara Steele and while she is the best thing about the movie, she is barely in it. When they say "possessed" they mean replaced by someone else wearing a bizarre monster mask. So instead we are forced to follow her lame fiancee around. Also there's a really random attempted rape scene in the movie for some reason.

6. Bell, Book and Candle (1958)

A modern witch casts a lovespell on her neighbor in order to get back at his fiancee. But things get complicated when she starts to fall in love with him for real.

I'm sorry, but I have a huge bias against Jimmy Stewart. And here he is at age 50 starring against a 25 year old Kim Novak. That man is not a catch! I do not understand the hold he had over Hollywood. Anyways, as far as rom-coms go this a bit of a strange one. The cast is pretty fun (when you exclude Stewart) and it's got some interesting flair. But it's held back by the non-existent chemistry between the leads and the slight tinge of 50s misogyny.

P.S. Don't think I didn't notice their disdain for the oxford comma, the heathens.

7. Doll Shark (2022)

A kid's stuffed shark becomes possessed by the spirit of a killer shark and goes on a murder spree.

This is from one of those studios that specializes in making incredibly low budget junk films and it shows. It's umm...not good. If you insist on watching it be sure to have some drinks and/or some friends with you.

8. An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Two Americans are backpacking through England (as was the style at the time) when they are attacked by a werewolf. Now cursed and far from home, time is quickly running out for them.

The classic John Landis horror comedy! I used to catch this one on TV all the time as a kid. It's a lot of fun and an interesting piece of Jewish-American horror. I will admit that while I like every scene in the movie, as a whole it feels slightly disjointed to me? In any case there's a lot of memorable scenes, practical effects, and great performances. Jenny Agutter is especially charming.

9. Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde (1971)

Dr Jekyll is trying to discover a secret to prolonging life and thinks the answer might be found in female hormones. But when his experience goes wrong he transforms into a woman. In order to keep their experiment going and perfect their elixir they need dead bodies, but what are you to do when supplies are running low?

I honestly do not know if this movie was trying to be this queer or if it was just a happy accident. I swear to god, Jekyll essentially invents HRT on accident, has a gender crisis, and then has to battle with wither they continue their life as they had or to embrace this new identity. It is fascinating. I don't think it was intentionally creating this theme, but by good golly, they make it really hard not to see it that way. Martine Beswick as Hyde is so, so good in this.

10. Puppet Shark (2023)

A puppet movie about two kids telling shark stories around a campfire.

Another of these super-low budget films. It has some charming moments early on. But quickly run out of ideas and it becomes a real slog to the finish.

11. Son of Dracula (1943)

A vampire who may or may not be Count Dracula is invited to Louisiana by an heiress. But he has his own fiendish plans for this new world.

Lon Chaney Jr. is, without a doubt, the worst Dracula I have ever seen. He is the we-have-Dracula-at-home Dracula. He feels like Dracula's loser brother-in-law or something. I don't even know. It has it's moments, but it's a bit all over the place.

12. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)

While trying to save his soul from sin, nice guy Dr. Jekyll creates the alternate persona of Mr. Hyde. But things get tough for Jekyll when Hyde's transgressions start to get out of hand.

In terms of filmmaking this is pretty impressive. But in terms of story they made a really weird change from the book. Originally Jekyll was ashamed of his vices and created Hyde as an alter-ego to hide behind and protect his image. But here Jekyll wants to be sure he doesn't slip into temptation by unleashing an unchecked evil force onto the streets? I thought he was supposed to be smart.

13. The Bewitched Inn (1897)

A man goes to an inn for a good night's sleep only to find the place is haunted.

Back from the days where movies were only a couple minutes long. They figured out how to hide action in the cuts and by gosh...they went for it. It's fun to see such early movies to see just how far we've come. Truly we stand on the backs of giants.

14. The X-Ray Fiend (1897)

When a couple is exposed to x-rays we can see their skeletons.

Another short one from the early years. Not only harnessing the power of the cut, but also tapping into the strange new power of the discovery of x-rays two years earlier.

15. Titane (2021)

A dancer who has a fetish for cars must pretend to be the lost son of a firefighter in order to hide from authorities.

A French body horror and psychological drama. Taps into the genre of body horror to investigate ideas of gender, pregnancy, and identity. I honestly can't describe it in a way to properly due it justice. It's an experience. If your stomach can handle the body horror you should definitely check it out.

16. The Girl from the Other Side (2022)

In a world where cursed creatures stalk the outside world as people hide in the cities. One creature comes across a young girl and together they create a haven for themselves.

A beautiful piece of Japanese animation and one of my favorite movies I've seen this year. Dark fantasy meets found family. The animation is absolutely gorgeous. It's like a fairy tale come to life.

17. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)

A group of strangers meet on a train. But when a fortuneteller begins to tell their futures to pass the time they start to realize that their futures are bleak.

To its credit it has some powerhouse actors in its roster. Peter Cushing, Donald Sutherland, friggin' Christopher Lee! But it is an anthology of stories and the stories are rather lackluster. They all just kinda...end. With much more thought being put into the setup than the ending.

18. Werewolf by Night (2022)

A group of monster hunters are assembled for a contest to see who will gain control of a powerful artifact.

I was not aware that this was a Marvel movie until it started. Wish I had known that before. I was in the mood for a modern take on old Universal horror, and it some ways it is, but in most ways it's just another sort of Marvel movie. I swear Gael García Bernal is in a Spanish language movie it will be fire. But if he's in an American movie it will probably be simple pop. fodder. Would've like more atmosphere and monsters than action set pieces.

19. I Blame Society (2020)

An out-of-work filmmaker decides to prove to those around her that she is capable of something bigger by finishing a project to make a movie about how she would commit the perfect murder.

I get why this movie won't be for everyone, but I loved it. It had me laughing out loud throughout. And some of the shots from this are burned into my brain forever. It's almost like a dark-comedy mockumentary of sorts. And its satire seeks out those in every level of the filmmaking process.

20. Bluebeard (1944)

A man tries to ditch his proclivity for murder by turning his artistic energies into puppets. But those around him continue to force his hand.

It's not terrible or anything. But the Bluebeard character just annoyed me to no end. I would have preferred if we were mostly following the leading lady, but we're stuck following him and he is not a particularly compelling fellow.

21. Escape Room (2017)

A group of rich friends take part in an exclusive escape room for a birthday celebration only to discover that the stakes are higher than they were expecting.

I was not aware until I had started this that there are actually multiple movies with this title and this is, in fact, not the one I had heard about. Umm...this seems like it would be a fun one to watch with drinks and friends and laugh at. But it is not a good movie by any stretch. You are left with so many questions as to why they did the things they did in this thing.

My Review: This was unexpected as I was expecting a classic rom com got more as this is an excellent book about a woman who takes back her life, her dream, and her narrative. And this woman is a gifted artist whose career was ruined by jalousie and spite. And this woman is a mother, is brave and decides to steal a very valuable portrait of the young Johanna painted by her former lover who’s also the one who trashed her career and dreams. This could a very serious and complex novel, full of thought provoking parts about the role of women in art and how they must be able to recognize their own value. This book talks about these serious topics but it’s also entertaining and compelling. Johanna is a strong woman who’s not afraid the take risk, to reflect on her life and steal her portrait. If you want to know more please read the book. I loved it and love Johanna and the other well plotted characters. The author is talented and can’t wait to read other books. Highly recommended.
