How A Famous Economist Saw A Better Future In Copiosis
How A Famous Economist Saw A Better Future In Copiosis. John Maynard Keynes predicted Copiosis: a future where people need to earn a living. A better future for sure. He just didn't know its name.
Photo by Marvin Meyer on Unsplash John Maynard Keynes predicted Copiosis. He didn’t clearly understand what he saw, as most people predicting the future don’t. Never the less, in an essay still quoted decades after he wrote it, Keynes talks about a technology-enabled future that only Copiosis makes possible. Back in the last century, for every family enjoying the easy life in an elegant Yorkshire mansion like this, there were thousands paying for it, condemned to the misery of starving in cramped hovels packed close to the mills that accounted for their every waking hour.

The labourer sells himself and indeed, sells himself piecemeal. He auctions off eight, ten, twelve, fifteen hours of his life, day after day, to the highest bidder, to the owner of the raw materials, instruments of labour and means of subsistence, that is, to the capitalist. The worker belongs neither to an owner nor to the land, but eight, ten, twelve, fifteen hours of his daily life belong to him who buys them... He belongs not to this or that capitalist, but to the capitalist class.

“Shoplifting” sounds like it’s one of those dumb corporate euphemisms bosses use to try and hide the fact that employees are doing menial labor.
“Oh, you’re not a cashier, you’re a sales associate.  You’re not a bagger, you’re package help.  You’re not a stockboy, you’re a shoplifter.  Remember, we smile big at Save-Big; High Spirits, Low Prices™. I wanna see them pearly whites, people.”
