Organizers of the "Pharmageddon" protest told NBC News that around 900 people in as many as 10 states could participate in the ongoing protest, which started Monday and will end Wednesday [November 1, 2023]. There was no way to independently verify that number.
Lannie Duong, a clinical pharmacist based in California, is one of the key organizers of the protests. She said that, along with sickouts and walkouts, members have discussed protesting at the corporate headquarters of Walgreens and CVS, which are in Deerfield, Illinois, and Woonsocket, Rhode Island, respectively. Those protests are scheduled for Wednesday.
The protests are that much more notable because the pharmacists don't have a union and aren't asking for better pay. They primarily want their employers to hire more staff to alleviate the workload and to eliminate policies that push them to work faster. They say those conditions are making it more likely they will make a mistake that could harm a patient.

Oct 6 (Reuters) - Pharmacy employees at some U.S. Walgreens (WBA.O) stores, including pharmacists, technicians and support staff, plan a walkout between Monday and Wednesday, CNN reported on Friday, citing an organizer. Some employees plan to walk out for one day, while others expect to close their pharmacies for all three, the network said, citing employees in three states. The walkout is in response to what pharmacy employees call burdensome prescription and vaccination expectations placed on pharmacists, the report said. Reuters could not immediately reach employees involved in the reported action for comment. Walgreens said in an emailed response it was engaged and listening to concerns raised by some of its team members. "We are making significant investments in pharmacist wages and hiring bonuses to attract/retain talent in harder to staff locations," the company said. In the biggest ever U.S. healthcare sector strike, Kaiser Permanente nurses, medical technicians and support staff walked off the job at hospitals and clinics for 72 hours this week. The strike by 75,000 workers ended on Friday as the two sides agreed to resume stalled contract talks, although union officials warned of possible further walkouts.

June 5, 2023
By Anousa Sakoui
(Los Angeles Times) -- Members of SAG-AFTRA have voted to strike if they can’t reach a deal with studios over a new contract by June 30, underscoring widening labor tensions across Hollywood.
The vote was approved by a 98% margin, the union said Monday night.
The endorsement gives the union more leverage in negotiations with studios that begin Wednesday on behalf of its 160,000 performers and broadcasters.
“This strike authorization means we enter our negotiations from a position of strength, so that we can deliver the deal our members want and deserve,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator, said in a statement.
“We are approaching these negotiations with the goal of achieving a new agreement that is beneficial to SAG-AFTRA members and the industry overall,” the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said in a statement.
The vote comes as writers enter their sixth week of a strike that has already destabilized the film and TV industry. An actors’ strike could further disrupt production activity.
Breaking news out of Hollywood, folks. And it's not just your regular movie and TV actors who are covered by SAG-AFTRA. This also includes announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers, news editors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and other media professionals (according to the union's website). This would perhaps be even more disruptive than the current WGA strike.

Many Democratic lawmakers are telling their staff to let phone calls asking for a cease-fire in Gaza go to voicemail.
At least 24 lawmakers in the House and Senate have called for a cease-fire in Gaza, but Joe Biden has said there is “no possibility” of that happening. Instead, Israel agreed this week to a daily four-hour “humanitarian pause,” which it seems to think is enough time for civilians to flee bombs on foot.
Staff from more than 24 Democratic congressional offices told HuffPost in a story published Thursday that the caucus was unprepared for how many calls, emails, and letters they are receiving from constituents demanding a cease-fire. Most lawmakers do not yet have an official response.
One staffer, speaking anonymously, said that until a formal stance is developed, many of them have been told to “let it go to voicemail.”
Another staffer said that the office phone rings every five minutes with someone urging a cease-fire. A third staffer said the phone “doesn’t stop ringing at any point in the day.”
The majority of voters across party lines believe in the need for a cease-fire, and 80 percent of Democratic voters agree that the United States should call for a cease-fire and de-escalation in Gaza, according to a poll from Data for Progress.
It’s not just constituents, either. More than 100 staffers, both Democratic and Republican, staged a walkout on Wednesday to call for a cease-fire in Gaza.
But lawmakers, by and large, seem to be fine ignoring the calls. Some believe the movement will eventually just die down, and one lawmaker allegedly joked, “They weren’t going to vote for me anyway.”
Staffers are shocked at both the public unity behind the issue and lawmakers’ refusal to take it seriously.
“This building is not listening,” one Democratic aide told HuffPost. “I’ve never seen such a disconnect between where voters and constituents are and where Congress is, and that’s saying something because there’s always a disconnect.”
More than 11,000 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israel’s ongoing retaliation to Hamas’s October 7 attack. The fighting has also killed at least 39 journalists and other media workers and more than 100 United Nations employees.

Policy 8040 was what allowed a TIM to access a girls restroom and sexually assault a classmate. But sure start with a quote from a male student uncomfortable with girls walking in while showering
LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (7News) — On Wednesday, students at Woodgrove High School walked out of school in protest of the Loudoun County School Board’s policy that allows nonbinary, gender fluid and transgender students to use the school bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice.
“In the locker rooms in the morning it's an invasion of privacy, as I said because when men and natural-born males are in our locker rooms and they are showering in the morning, natural-born females can walk in there as they please,” one male high school student told 7News. “And that is not OK. And it goes against what we believe in.”
In 2021, the Loudoun County School Board voted 7 to 2 to adopt the district-wide policy known as Policy 8040.
But some students have had enough and want the policy reversed.
“I would like to be able when I get off football practice and go put my pads away and change not feel uncomfortable with other genders in there watching me,” another male student told 7News. “I feel that girls feel the same way about the situation. How would you feel if you were a female changing with a male?”
7News spoke to a female student who said she stopped using the bathroom at school because of Policy 8040.
“It's a massive safety risk, and they [LCPS] don't do anything about it,” the female student told 7News. “And we express these concerns and they ignore us and write us off as right-wing crazies. We're not crazy. We just don't want to be in danger on a daily basis in this building. I think it's people finally stepping up and just being sick of it. We're sick of being here and just being completely ignored. I stopped using them [the bathrooms] because I don't know what's going to happen to me in there. And people can be like, 'Oh, well, that's paranoid'. I'm telling you right now half the women in this building feel the same way. We don't use the bathrooms. We hold our pee until we can't. I mean, there are girls in PE [Physical Education class] who still get changed in the bathroom stalls in there because they're afraid of who might waltz in.”

Across the street during the students' rally, a smaller group of counter-protestors waived pride flags.
“I’m here to support all of the children,” one of the counter-protestors told 7News. “No matter who they are. Yours, mine, all of them.”

About 50-100 students walked out of Woodgrove High School asking the school board to restore girls-only and boys-only locker rooms, showers and bathrooms in schools.
“It should be the entire school [walking out],” one student said.
“But there are a lot of people who are scared to speak out against it so they stayed inside because they don't want to see the backlash,” another student continued.
7News asked LCPS if the superintendent is going to reverse Policy 8040.
“The Loudoun County School Board is continuing to follow its established process in its review of the latest Model Policies issued by the Virginia Department of Education. Policy 8040 is in review along with the new Model Policies, by the Student Services Committee,” LCPS said in a statement.
7News has heard from students at Woodgrove High School who wanted to participate in the student walkout Wednesday morning to restore girls-only and boys-only bathrooms and locker rooms, but the students were discouraged by their teachers.

General Motors (GM.N) said Thursday it hiked its contract offer to a 20% wage hike for U.S. autoworkers - including 10% in the first year - in a bid to avoid a strike that is set to begin at 11:59 p.m [EDT]. if no deal is reached. The targeted actions against selected auto plants would be the United Auto Workers' first-ever simultaneous strike against the Detroit Three carmakers. Ford Motor (F.N) also confirmed it had earlier offered a 20% hike and other benefits.[...] The union is asking for 40% raises and major improvements in benefits. Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) had offered an increase of 17.5%, Fain said Wednesday.

More than 100 students walked out of Westlake Middle School on Wednesday to protest the cancellation of a meeting that Bay Area labor groups had planned to host at the campus over the weekend in support of Palestine. The demonstration, planned by Westlake’s Black Student Union, is the latest action by students and staff who are dissatisfied with the district’s handling of events and discussions related to the war in Gaza.  Bay Area Labor for Palestine, a coalition of local unions, had reserved Westlake for what was billed as a “mass organizing and teach-in” meeting on Sunday. OUSD allows the public to reserve and rent space in its facilities through an online platform. On Saturday, organizers said they received notice from the district that their event could not use the campus because of staffing shortages.  OUSD did not respond to a request for comment about the meeting cancellation or the student walkout. Westlake students were joined by representatives from Bay Area Labor for Palestine—a coalition that includes the Oakland and San Francisco teachers unions, Arab Resource and Organizing Center, ILWU Local 10, Jewish Voice for Peace Bay Area, and others—who viewed the district’s action as censorship. Timothy Killings, the advisor of the Black Student Union at Westlake, said his students came up with the idea for the walkout after he told them about the canceled meeting.
“We pride ourselves on this being a safe space for organizations to talk about the dynamic and the genocide, to be frank, that’s happening in Palestine,” said Killings, who also serves as Westlake’s community school manager. “I’m wholeheartedly for public debate and I tell my BSU that—let the ideas flow and let the community decide what’s right.”
[...]
Students left Westlake around 11:30 a.m. and walked through downtown Oakland chanting slogans in support of the Palestinian people. They ended at Frank Ogawa Plaza, where they were joined by students from Envision Academy, a charter school in downtown Oakland. As students led the crowd in chants, Killings took groups of students to the nearby Black Panther Party Museum exhibit about the Oakland Community School.

Over 100 congressional staffers staged a walkout in front of the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, calling on the representatives they work for to endorse a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.
The staffers held a vigil for the 1,400 Israelis killed in Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack against Israel, as well as the more than 10,000 Palestinians killed in Israel’s retaliatory siege against the Gaza Strip.
“We were horrified by the brutal October 7th attacks on Israeli civilians, and we are horrified by the overwhelming response by the Israeli government that has killed thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza,” Congressional Staff For A Ceasefire wrote in a statement. “Our constituents are pleading for a ceasefire, and we are the staffers answering their calls.”
“Most of our bosses on Capitol Hill are not listening to the people they represent. We demand our leaders speak up: call for a ceasefire, a release of all hostages, and an immediate de-escalation now,” they added.

Nov 8, 2023; From Al Jazeera's live update page for the day:
"More than 100 US congressional staffers stage walkout to demand ceasefire
The staffers have held a vigil in front of the US Capitol building, saying in a statement that they are “no longer comfortable staying silent”.
“Our constituents are pleading for a ceasefire, and we are the staffers answering their calls,” they said. “Most of our bosses on Capitol Hill are not listening to the people they represent. We demand our leaders speak up.”
A Data for Progress poll released on October 20 showed 66 percent of US voters want President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire with 80 percent of Democrats supporting such a move.
But the Biden administration has rejected pressure to support ceasefire calls, instead saying it is working to get so-called humanitarian pauses in the fighting.
Only a handful of legislators in the US House of Representatives have called for a ceasefire although support for humanitarian pauses has grown. Last week, Dick Durbin became the first US senator to call for a ceasefire."
It looks like since the live update page has now moved to Nov 9th, the linked video may no longer be working (at least on my end), but it was originally this video for the U.S. Staffer update:

Do keep calling your representatives if you are in the U.S. - someone is listening on the other end

New Long Posts! "The Scariest Movie I Ever Saw in a Theater: The Ring" with supplemental creepypasta posts on "Ted the Caver" and "The Dionaea House." They went up a couple days early (Wednesday) on the $5 Patreon tier. I have a ton of Halloween topics I'd like to write about, but these posts plus I Grew Up in a Haunted House took me a full two weeks. I'm really happy with them (and I think the two sets of posts add up to something like 10,000 words all together), but they're recalibrating my understanding of my own energy levels, let's say.

Yet another group of crucial workers is just days away from a nationwide walkout. More than 75,000 workers at one of the nation's largest health care providers, Kaiser Permanente, could go on strike next Wednesday if there's no agreement between their unions and their employer. A final round of in-person negotiations is scheduled to start on Friday, before the current contract expires on Saturday. The three-day strike would hit hospitals, clinics and medical offices from California and Colorado to Washington D.C. Tens of thousands of workers — including nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists and therapists — would walk off the job.

Glory Days: A Baseball AU Fic
Tumblr media
Part 1 of my Baseball Player Steve Harrington Fic!
Eddie Munson was at the last place he thought he would ever be on a Wednesday afternoon.
After arriving in Chicago for the next stop on Corroded Coffin's Raising the Dead tour, their manager, Nancy Wheeler, presented them with suite tickets to the Chicago Cubs game.
"One of the player's brothers is a huge fan" She said as she passed over the envelope, "It would mean a lot to go, and it's good press."
"Nancy," Eddie started, and the rest of the band sighed, preparing for his rant, "We are not sports sorts. In fact, it was those same types that made our lives such hell in school. And yes, that was 10 years ago but I have a very good memory, and even a few scars to remember it by!"
"Look, it's 3 hours tops, there will be food and drinks in the suite, and if you get pics at the game I bet you sell out the rest of those tickets before the show on Saturday. Chicago loves the Cubs, and Steve Harrington is their golden boy."
Eddie looked to his band members, eyes darting between the three of them.
Gareth shrugged "Might as well, maybe it could be fun."
Eddie frowned, and glared down at Jeff, "Weirdly enough, I kind of like baseball."
Eddie gasped, murmuring traitor under his breath.
Finally, he leveled his gaze to Frank, who gulped before sputtering out, "I mean, free food and drinks is nice."
" Ugh… .fine!" Eddie snaps, throwing his hands up and flopping down on the couch in the hotel suite," but don't expect me to be happy about it."
Which brings us to the present, where Eddie sits in the cushy Legends suite at Wrigley Field. At least the day was nice, the sky a bright blue with fluffy clouds, a chill breeze just enough to cool the warm rays of the sun.
A bat cracked, and Eddie flinched. He knew there was netting keeping the balls from getting to them but that didn't stop his anxiety from expecting every single one of those fuckers to come flying at his face like some kind of jock powered magic missile.
“I would say you get used to it, but you really don’t.”
Eddie turned to see a woman with short brown hair and blue eyes seated two seats over. Her long legs were propped up on the seat in front of her, and she wore a white and blue striped jersey with HARRINGTON across the back.
“I mean, I’ve been going to Steve’s games since college and I still flinch every time.” She said, chuckling to herself, “I’m Robin, by the way.”
“Ah, so you must be Harrington’s lucky girl!” Eddie exclaims, sweeping his hands open in a dramatic bow, “Eddie Munson, pleasure to meet you.”
“Eww, no.” Robin clips, “Steve is my very platonic best friend. And roommate, but I am but a humble graduate student and he makes fuck you amounts of money.”
Eddie barks out a laugh at that as the loudspeaker in the stadium crackles to life.
“Batting Number 4, Your Shortstop Steve Harrington!!”
The crowd roars to life, Robin cheering enthusiastically next to him, and Eddie’s jaw drops open as he hears a familiar drum and guitar riff before his own voice shouts through the stadium “I don’t need your crown!!”, the fans echoing his words as the guitar and drums kick into a fast and heavy riff. When Jeff explained the concept of walkout music to him earlier in the game he never expected to hear one of their own songs blasted through the stadium.
“Holy shit!” Gareth shouted, shaking Eddie by the shoulders “Harrington has our song as his walkout music!”
Eddie looks up to the jumbotron screens to see a close up of Harrington as he steps up to the batter's box, a beaming smile on his face as he taps the end of the bat on each shoe before bringing the bat up and squatting slightly to get in batting position, his eyes focused like a laser on the pitcher.
The first pitch flies in just below the strike zone, the second in the dirt.
“Ooo, they’re scared of him.” a curly haired man says, plopping into the empty seat between Eddie and Robin.
“Scared of him?” Eddie questions, tilting his head at the new arrival.
He turns towards Eddie and a look of recognition crosses his face, “Holy shit, you’re Eddie Munson! Steve said he was giving you and the band tickets but I didn’t think you’d actually come! I’m Dustin, his little brother!”
Dustin grabs Eddie’s hand, shaking it enthusiastically as Steve fouls off the third pitch.
“They’re scared of him because he’s a damn good player,” Robin fills in, sitting up just enough to make eye contact with Eddie over Dustin’s head.
“Yeah, they don’t want to give him anything he can get ahold of,” Dustin muses as the crack of the bat against the ball rings out through the stadium.
The ball rockets up the middle, cutting between the second base and shortstop and rolling through center field. Steve takes off at a sprint, rounding first base and making it comfortably to second before the ball flies in from the outfield.
“Hell yeah Steve!!” Dustin shouts, with Robin whistling.
* * * * *
Eddie spends the majority of the game talking to Dustin and Robin about a variety of topics. Eddie learns that Dustin is working at a tech company that does…something with radio waves. Honestly Eddie was lost on that one after about three words. He also learns Robin is studying linguistics at the University of Chicago. Eddie talks to them both about his music, their tour, and a few early ideas for songs.
The group always stops when Steve comes up to bat. It’s endearing how much the pair cares about Steve, contrasting with how little they care about the rest of the game. It honestly surprises Eddie how good of a time he is having.
Steve’s next two at bats are a sacrifice fly, putting the Cubs on the board but still behind. His second at bat ends in a double play, giving Eddie precious little time to admire the man as he ran the bases. And Eddie was a weak, weak man, and those baseball pants hugged just right. He should honestly know better than to crush on the straight jock, but looking was fine, right?
It was the bottom of the ninth and the Cubs trailed 4-1 when Steve came to bat, bases loaded. After Steve’s walkout music cut off you could hear a pin drop in the stadium. Pitch one was a fastball, rocketing in right down the center of the strike zone. Steve stood completely still, taking the strike. The next, a breaking ball down and left, outside the strike zone. One and one count.
“Holy shit this is stressful,” Eddie said through clenched teeth, twisting the rings on his fingers nervously.
“No kidding,” Robin mumbles, her knee bouncing anxiously as Steve stepped back into the batter’s box.
Pitch three was a fastball that floated just outside of the strike zone, pitch four a curve ball fouled off into the first base stands. The count was even, and it felt as if the stadium itself was holding its breath.
Pitch five was where the pitcher made a grave error. It flew straight down the center of the strike zone, but Steve was ready for it this time. The ball cracked off the bat, soaring towards right field. The stadium erupted, growing louder and louder the further the ball flew, until it landed in the right field bleachers.
“HOLY SHIT THAT WAS A WALK OFF GRAND SLAM!!” Dustin screamed, as all of them jumped to their feet, shouting and cheering as Steve and his teammates all rounded the bases.
The entire stadium was whipped into a frenzy, the team included. Steve rounded third base and beamed as his entire team waited for him at home plate, where they instantly swarmed him, multiple coolers of gatorade dunked on his head as the team celebrated.
Eddie and the Corroded Coffin boys couldn’t help but be swept up in the kinetic atmosphere of the stadium, jumping and cheering. His eyes locked with Gareth’s when the entire stadium began to sing.
“Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey, Chicago, what do you say, The Cubs are gonna win today!”
“They have their own theme song?” Gareth exclaimed, “We gotta do a cover.”
“Wouldn’t be the first!” Jeff shouted over the crowd, slinging an arm around Gareth’s shoulders, “Pantera wrote a song for the Dallas hockey team that they play when goals are scored.”
The crowd continued singing as they all filtered out of the stadium, while the suite that Eddie and the others were in continued their libations. After a few minutes, the door swung open and a chorus of “Steve!” rang out from the box.
Eddie may as well have looked right at the sun with as bright as Harrington was beaming as both Dustin and Robin threw their arms around his shoulders, both speaking lightning fast at him in their excitement. His eyes darted between the two of them, trying to keep up with the separate streams of conversations, when his eyes finally settled between the two of them on Eddie, Gareth, Jeff, and Frank.
“You must be Corroded Coffin!” He greeted, slipping between Robin and Dustin and walking over to shake hands, “I’m really glad you could make it, Dusty and I are both big fans.”
“Gotta say,” Eddie started as he shook Steve’s hand, “I didn’t expect a pretty boy jock like yourself to be a metal fan.”
Steve flushed slightly, rubbing the back of his neck, “Yeah, well Dustin was the one who got me into it in all honesty. That plus a smidge of teenage rebellion was the right combination I guess. Plus, it makes great workout music.”
A woman’s head popped into the door as the group chatted, “Steve, we have a presser in 5.”
“Guess that’s my cue,” he said, thumbing over his shoulder at the door, “If you don’t have plans after the game, we are doing a barbecue at my place.”
The Corroded Coffin boys all looked between each other, Jeff nodding enthusiastically. Frank shrugged, and Gareth smiled mischievously at Eddie. He didn’t like that look one bit.
“I guess we can swing by,” Eddie said, eyebrows knitted together in confusion at Gareth’s expression, then turning to smile at Steve.
“Great!” Steve beamed, clapping Eddie on the shoulder, “Robin can give you the details.”
Steve walked up to Nancy just before leaving, giving her a hug and lifting her slightly off her toes.
“It was good to see you Nance Pants,” he grinned, “See you at the barbecue!”
"Nance Pants?" The band choruses in unison.
"We are NOT talking about it."

University students have chanted “death to Zionists” in the latest anti-Semitism row on a British campus.
Jewish students at the University of Birmingham have spoken of their fear after activists held up a banner which said “Zionists off our campus” and allegedly chanted “death to Zionists” at a rally that took place on campus on Wednesday.
The rally was part of a “day of action” organised by the Stop the War coalition and Palestine Solidarity campaign, according to the Jewish Chronicle. Students across the country took part in walkouts and occupied buildings.
Jewish student groups issued a statement afterwards saying that safety on campus had been “broken”.
The Union of Jewish Students (UJS) and the University of Birmingham’s Jewish Society said: “We’re scared and we’re heartbroken. This anti-Semitic hatred has been allowed to fester on our campus for too long. The University of Birmingham must take action now.”
