Enchanting facade - Walled City of Lahore, Punjab, PAKISTAN

There is no distance between us, like the small alleyways of the Walled City of Lahore. And when you smile, you are the architecture of old Delhi coming to life. I am a fortress, and you are the Palace of Mirrors. Looking up to you is like cold mornings and tea in clay cups. You smile like eagles flying above a Mosque while the sun sets. You speak the language of poetry, and I sit in the sun admiring it. You are the feeling of running to catch a train, and trucks painted in every color of your soul. I am a voyager and you are my homeland.

The zenana at Fatehpur Sikri that Gulbadan (Begum) returns to in 1582 is very different to the haraman of her wandering with Humayun. The great tented mobile cities have disappeared, replaced by the sandstone and marble walls and palaces of Akbar’s zenana. Within a few years, Akbar shifts his capital once again, this time to Lahore. During the relative stability of the second half of Akbar’s long reign, there are no headlong rushes away from enemies, no crackling escapes on horseback through strange lands. Instead, Akbar has made alliances to stabilize his empire further and ‘his Majesty has made a large enclosure with fine buildings inside’. But the older women of the court, irrepressible and untouchable, continue to abandon the ‘proper order’ of the court and leave on extended trips to follow the emperor, unannounced but always welcomed. The women are also busy with more scholarly pursuits and it is around this time that Gulbadan is asked by Akbar to write her memoirs of Babur and Humayun. Gulbadan sits for days with Hamida Banu, researching her stories of her escape with Humayun into Persia. In the fastness and splendour of Lahore, these women’s memories of their earlier, more precarious adventures, are as blisteringly sharp as ever.
Gulbadan lives the next twenty years of her life at Akbar’s court, performing celebrated acts of charity and greatly cherished by her nephew. She dies in 1603, at the age of eighty, with Hamida Banu Begum by her side. Hamida Banu, trying to revive the dying woman, calls out to her by her term of endearment, ‘Begam Jio’. Gulbadan, opens her eyes one last time, long enough to look at the queen mother and her old friend to say, ‘I am dying, may you live long.’ Akbar is inconsolable and carries Gulbadan’s bier himself part of the way to her grave and for the two years that he survives her, constantly complains that he misses his beloved aunt. Hamida Banu does not long survive Gulbadan and dies the following year, in 1604. Akbar shaves his head and his chin in mourning, the first of only two times in his life that he does so. With Bega Begum also long gone, the age of the matriarchs has finally passed.

Within these walls, within these 13 gates of a city as warm and gentle as a winter night around you, I wait. I wait for beauty immeasurable, unsurmountable, irresistible. I wait for love that knows know bounds, that floods its banks like the Ravi, that holds through every difficulty like the Qila. I wait a grueling, terrifying wait, but I wait for you. I wait for soft smiles and cheeks as red as the gutka on Mall Road. I wait for stolen eye contact under David and across Cantt. I wait a beautiful wait, to intertwine, to emulsify, to become one. To have hand in loved hand, to have my world glowing infront of me, to once again have the peace that I feel in your arms. There is a love greater, older and untamable than Lahore I wait for and I shall wait even if forever comes to be.

Exploring the Dynamic Landscape of Urban City Lahore: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Nestled in the heart of Punjab, Pakistan, lies the vibrant metropolis of Urban City Lahore. Steeped in rich history yet pulsating with the rhythm of modern life, Lahore stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of resilience and adaptation. As one of the oldest cities in the region, its streets bear witness to the ebb and flow of centuries, each layer adding depth to its cultural tapestry.
At the core of Urban City Lahore lies its bustling Old City, a labyrinth of narrow alleys and bustling bazaars that have stood for centuries. Here, the scent of spices mingles with the aroma of sizzling street food, while the echoes of muezzins calling for prayer reverberate against ancient walls. Wandering through the maze-like streets, one encounters architectural marvels such as the majestic Badshahi Mosque and the iconic Lahore Fort, each a testament to the city's Mughal heritage.
However, Urban City Lahore is far from being confined to its historical roots. As the economic hub of Pakistan, it is a city in constant motion, its skyline punctuated by towering skyscrapers and modern infrastructure. The bustling commercial districts of Gulberg and DHA showcase the city's rapid development, with gleaming malls and office complexes catering to the needs of a burgeoning urban population.
Yet, amidst the whirlwind of progress, Urban City Lahore remains deeply rooted in its cultural identity. The Lahore Museum stands as a guardian of the city's artistic legacy, housing a priceless collection of artifacts spanning millennia. Similarly, the annual Lahore Literary Festival draws intellectuals and artists from around the world, celebrating the city's rich literary tradition.
One cannot speak of Urban City Lahore without mentioning its culinary delights, which are as diverse as they are delicious. From the sizzling kebabs of Gawalmandi to the fragrant biryanis of Food Street, Lahore's culinary scene is a melting pot of flavors and influences. Whether indulging in a traditional Lahori breakfast of halwa puri or sampling the fusion cuisine at one of the city's trendy cafes, visitors are sure to be tantalized by the gastronomic offerings of this culinary capital.
However, Urban City Lahore is not without its challenges. Rapid urbanization has led to strains on infrastructure and resources, while pollution and traffic congestion are ever-present concerns. Yet, amidst these challenges, there is a palpable sense of optimism and resilience among Lahore's residents, who continue to innovate and adapt in the face of adversity.
In essence, Urban City Lahore is a city of contrasts—a place where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony, where the past seamlessly merges with the present. It is a city that captivates the imagination, leaving an indelible mark on all who have the privilege of experiencing its vibrant streets and warm hospitality. As Lahore continues to evolve and grow, one thing remains certain: its spirit and resilience will endure for generations to come.
