I think it is very important for new Star Trek fans, especially new TOS fans to know that in 2008, George Takei, who played Sulu, got married to his partner of 23 years, Brad Altman, and at their wedding, Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura, and Walter Koenig, who played Chekov, served as Best Lady and Best Man.
it kinda fucks me up seeing gifs and videos of the star trek actors and actresses in the media they made before coming on to trek because like... so many of them are in black and white?????? the original series is so vibrant and colorful and the lighting and sets are so pretty... these people started their careers before color was even a thing for tvs and that fucks me up to no end to consider
My mom was cleaning out closets and stuff, and sent me this cool Star Trek cosplay jacket she made for me when I was in high school. I think she made it either by altering one pattern or by cobbling together two patterns that she found in the local sewing crafts store. The Star Fleet emblem was made by hand by someone, and the whole club had them. I forget who made them.
The occasion for the making of the jacket was a charity event hosted by my school's sci-fi club that was attended by Walter Koenig at some point not long after the release of Star Trek III. The faculty advisor for the club was friends with some of the OG Star Trek cast, and she got Mr. Koenig to come out and support the children's cancer charity we were raising money for. He was lovely and very gracious to a bunch of seriously geeky kids. I have a photo somewhere of me in this jacket with Mr. Koenig, but I have no idea where it is. (I don't know the story behind how the faculty advisor came to know the OG Star Trek cast, but my impression is that this acquaintance started either during the filming of the original series or else not long thereafter.)
