However little sense its actual plot makes, I think Breaking Bad is a fun case study in diegetic genre dissonance. It’s basically a show about a guy who responds to the looming spectre of his own mortality by becoming the villain from a particularly moralistic Saturday morning cartoon, and somehow it works for him, at least for a while, but he’s the only one who gets to play by Saturday morning cartoon rules, leaving everyone around him to deal with the realistic fallout from his Scooby-Doo bullshit.
