Etched into stone

Here and there, over the last 18 years, I have written most everything I ever wished to write about Wanda To Kyozou. However, I don't believe I've discussed how influential Isao Takahata's 1968 film Taiyō no Ōji Horusu no Daibōken was to Ueda's work, this game in particular.

Before anything else, I'd like to establish a certain degree of verité. This classic animation has not only been mentioned by Ueda on a few occasions, the actual DVD can be seen in the booklet included with the Japanese limited edition of the game's re-release on the PS3.

From its size to the manner in which it moves, there are several similarities between the colossi and Mōgu, especially the first of them all, Valus. Notice the birds hovering above their heads.

Mōgu is a gentle titan afflicted by a splinter in his shoulder. Horus discovers that the splinter is in fact the magical sword of the sun. Rooted in Arthurian legend, pulling it out mirrors the necessary force which Wander needs to exert to inflict damage on a colossus.

Horus' sword of the sun also suggests an interesting link with Wander's ancient sword, in that both blades are able to magically gather light as a defining characteristic.

Horus defeats a giant pike using his axe and spears, a confrontation not without its share of parallels with Hydrus'. While this 7th colossus is more dragon than fish-like, the combat requires holding fast to the creature as it submerges. Also, early concepts showed Wander carrying a spear.

A more speculative connection, perhaps, is that of the villain Grunwald. Despite being an average-sized human, the first scenes of the film depict him as a giant on the horizon. The presence of horns alone is noteworthy, more so in combination with his shining eyes.

On a final note, the film's influence is just as discernible in Ico. Yorda (Yoruda) shares many resemblances with Hilda (Hiruda), including their inherent special abilities, their family bond with a villain representing absolute evil, as well as the resulting internal conflicts.

To conclude, I would merely like to add that this relationship between the two works operates at both a conscious and unconscious level. If Ueda watched this film as a child, the above connections become all the more relevant because they speak of a process of long-term assimilation, where the visual themes and concepts of the film acted as a formative reference for the author.

Hello! I was taking pictures of my cat and it got me thinking about the fallen snow au and the giant cat room you mentioned. I was wondering if you could make a little post of everyone reacting to reader sleeping in the cat room like this

Oooooooh my heavens, look at that lil' bby!!!😍 They are so precious!!! And I can try to make a reaction headcanons list to how the different platonic yans act if they see Creed!Reader sleeping like this!!! Let's try it:

• Sabretooth would be purring, seeing his cub curled up like that. The guy would likely curl up with Reader, hissing if anyone who wasn't the other kids or his brother came close

• Wolverine would likely be having a cuteness meltdown on the inside (He does whenever he sees any of his cubs or pups doing something cute, he just shortcircuits on the outside for a second or two)

• Laura and Kyle (X-23 and Wild Child) would immediately be lying diwn next to Reader and hugging them like they were a stuffed animal. They woukd look like a pile of kittens or puppies sleeping together, not gonna lie

• If Scott or Jean saw them, they'd be taking pictures/mentally telling the Professor about it. They'd be trading the photos like trading cards, too

• Pietro and Wanda would be blushing, then asking if they can join the cuddle pile. Would find a way to steal Reader into their room if they knew they wouldn't face the wrath of the feral kids

• Rogue and Evan would just lay down without asking or taking no for for answer, and making themselves comfortable. They don't care what anyone says, for once Reader isn't aware enough enough run or hide, so they're hugging them, no ifs, ands, or buts

• The Professor would have pictures taken. He'd He'd also have Hank/Beast working on a new drug/medicine for the ferals, to help them fall into their instincts and to feel happy and calm. Is also able to read Reader's mind for once, since their mental walls are down, so he looks through everything that has happened to them, from their past to the after their escape to the present time

• Magneto would try to move Reader to his and his kids special room, then finds that he has to fight every feral and sleepy kid who joined them (even if they weren't allowed in the special feral room)

• Hank/Beast is working on a new set of drugs, sedatives, and medicines for the Reader and other ferals, to help them fall into their instincts easier, to help them feel calm, even to make them a little loopy/to lower their shields a bit. He asks if he can join, and when he promises to make an extra tracking device for Reader, is let into the snuggle pile

• Storm is let in, no questions asked, as Wolverine and Laura and Evan like her and view her as family. And because she could drop a snowstorm on Wolverine and Sabretooth and make it so she was the only adult allowed to be with the kids. So no one stops her if she joins them

• Mystique would try and sneak in. She wouod be caught, and depending on who catches her, woukd either be allowed to stay or (politely) thrown out

• The innocent teens (Kurt, Kitty, Toad, Fred, and Lance) would want to join, despite not knowing Reader well. They would be asked to wait a bit, and let the adults see if Reader will be up to it later (they want to make sure the drug/sedative still works well enough, and make sure Reader doesn't feel freaked out over having new packmates)

• Gambit, Colossus, Pyro, and Tabby are told they can join the other teens while waiting, and that in a few days they'll try and see if Reader is still up for it

• The ferals eventually say "scr*w it!" and kick everyone out, since they want time with THEIR cub/littermate, and everyone else can have their turn once they've had their's. They want to enjoy being with Reader, especially since they feel extra guilt at being related to Reader yet never helping them when they needed it most. So if they can offer comfort and warmth (and the adults can nurse them), then they'll take that chance

• The photos of sleeping Reader become trading cards, and soon, everyone tries to get photos of Reader when they're relaxed or just unaware. What can they say? They're cute, even if they are rather skittish and act like a (literal) feral kitten who's never been hugged. Of course, they now need to hide the cards from Reader, so as not to seem weird or even more avoided than they already are...

(Whoops! I, um... maaaybe did this for the ❄Milky Snow🍼 AU)... But it CAN be read for ❄Fallen Snow🩸 AU, too... Whichever one you prefer!!)

'Shadow of the Colossus' was first released in the US on October 18th 2005, nine days before the Japanese edition, 'Wanda To Kyozou'. A similar-looking Chinese version was distributed on the 25th of that same month, its title concealing a small mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

While the cover logotype reads 'Wangda yu Juxiang', or "Wander and the Colossus", after the original Japanese name, its romanization, as printed on the manual cover, reads "Shadow AND the Colossus" - an unexpected hybrid of the Western and Japanese titles.

The same can be found on the disc itself, ruling out a mere printing blunder. Perhaps the package designer borrowed the word "Shadow" to create a parallel with the game's international title, one directed at the English-speaking Hong Kong market, but in the end neglected to change "and" for "of"?

Were you to do a Steve/Tony Sports AU, what sport would you pick? And would they be teammates, rival competitors, player & some kind of staff or media personal or something?

Or if not sports, do you have any favorite AU occupations for the, like chefs or teachers or something?

Thank you for giving me the excuse to post my amazing idea, "AvX But It's Baseball Instead Of Punching" which has been sitting in my random snippets doc for two years: AVX BUT IT'S BASEBALL INSTEAD OF PUNCHING: Tony: Wait, Colossus is pitching? How many people did you say we got to veto on the other team because of unfair powers? Scott: We used both of ours on Wanda and Strange. You get one more if you're still saying no to Emma. Steve: Okay. Still hanging onto that veto, then. Piotr: Da. I pitch. Logan: Fastball special, bub. Tony, spluttering: Whose team are you on, anyway? Tony, suspiciously: …whose team are you on, anyway? Tony: Oh, goddammit. Steve: Next? Scott: Nightcrawler. Steve: Hmm. You can keep him. Tony: Oh, come on. Steve. Steve. You want to win, right? The guy is basically a free base hit whenever he's up. Steve: Yeah, but he has to get a hit first. Tony: And who's our starting pitcher, then? Steve: Pietro. Scott: I'd like to take back that veto on Strange. Steve, cheerfully: No. So as far as I'm concerned, it absolutely has to be a baseball AU. Because Steve loves baseball. But I also feel like it would be much more interesting if they all still had their powers -- and we know in fact that there is canonically Avengers baseball, which is why I love Avengers Annual #15. (You will note that Steve is the pitcher for the East Coast team; Jan is catching him.)

I feel like baseball-with-powers fic would also be fun because you have to balance "characters whose powers would make them unfairly good at baseball" with "characters who have some idea how to play baseball" and as you can see from Avengers Annual #15 there, some of the characters who would be good at baseball also do not have much experience with the rules of baseball. Like, Steve is not The Strongest but he probably has a better chance at being a good pitcher than most of the Avengers who are stronger than him, since he has more baseball experience than most of them, daily experience throwing things, and also very good aim. I feel like he's probably actually a sidearm pitcher just from sheer muscle memory alone. I have probably thought too much about this.

Anyway, whether or not it's a full AU, given the affection that actual baseball fandom clearly has for batterymates (I feel like the fact that the term "batterymates" exists is a big tip-off), pitcher/catcher is the easy option because watching a really good battery is mesmerizing. (Last year's All-Star Game, where they routinely mic up some of the players, had Cortes and Trevino, who were on the AL team and are Yankees teammates the rest of the year so they already have experience together -- anyway, they were both on mic for an entire inning working together, which was really neat to watch.)

However, it almost seems too easy, so, you know. I would have to think about it. Pitcher/pitcher and catcher/catcher has potential -- and, say, outfielders would be an interesting pick just because it'd be different. I suppose "rivals" also has potential, provided they're divisional or historical rivals getting to play a lot and in that case they both gotta be infielders just so they can have emotional conversations when someone gets a base hit.

Oh! I also have a very meticulously planned (I mean, half-planned but it's the thought that counts) AU in which Steve and Tony are both involved in 1930s Thoroughbred racing. Because this is one of the few professions where pre-serum Steve's physique is (probably) an asset and also he would enjoy a job that is basically "go really fast and possibly die." Tony is an owner/trainer and Steve is one of his jockeys and together they're gonna win the Triple Crown. Steve will be riding Tony's horses (and also eventually Tony).

I must confess that I started planning it out solely because I had the idea that Tony could name his horses the same names as all the armors he designed in 616 and then it occurred to me that "War Machine" would 100% be an appropriate horse name in that era. Yes, I do think I'm hilarious.
