may I ask for just a lil renouncement verse 🥺🥺 something with flowers and the comforting feeling of planting things maybe?? 🥺🥺🥺🥺
On a damp, dreary morning in the third autumn after Lan Wangji’s wedding, A-Lan trots into his office with a flowerpot and asks for a bowl of dried lotus seeds.
“A-Lan grows flowers,” his daughter pleads, holding up the flowerpot with her beautiful eyes wide in supplication. “Papa, help Lan-bao?”
Lan Wangji’s heart melts. “Of course, qian jin,” he tells her, leaning down to kiss the top of her tousled little head. “Give Papa a moment, and I will be right there.”
He washes his paintbrushes and carries A-Lan to the storehouse near Wei Ying’s Jishi, where his beloved keeps all the ingredients he uses in his workshop. Lan Wangji built the storehouse as a gift for Wei Ying after A-Lan was born, since his jars of powders and talismans were already beginning to spill off the rows of shelves in the Jishi; and though he never quite knows which boxes are safe to touch, the storehouse has a single wall devoted to harmless ingredients like herbs and different kinds of dust. The lotus seeds are on the fourth shelf, between a bottle of swan feathers and a sheet of brown paper covered with dried moss; so Lan Wangji holds A-Lan up to the jar and waits for her to choose the biggest seed of the batch, a buttery yellow one with a hint of spring green lingering beneath the outer membrane.
“This one is Lan-bao’s,” she chirps, delighted with her prize. “Papa, give kiss.”
He brushes his lips over Shuilan’s forehead. “Like this, my xiao xin?”
“No!” the baby protests, holding the seed up to his mouth. “Kiss Hua-bao.”
Lan Wangji bends down and kisses the seed, warming from head to toe at the determination in the little girl’s voice; and then, with their work done, he bundles A-Lan out of the storehouse and takes her back to the Jingshi.
“Now A-Lan will plant her,” Shuilan announces, the moment he sets her down on the porch. “I have soil for Hua-bao?”
“Not the soil in the garden, A-Lan. We need river clay, and sand—the kind of soil A-Niang has in the bottom of the lotus pond.”
“Papa bring clay for A-Lan? Please?”
“En, I will. After we have lunch.”
A-Lan nods and runs back into the nursery, cradling the lotus seed to her chest, and Lan Wangji goes into the kitchen and begins preparing lunch for five. Wei Ying will be home from the Jishi within the hour, since he refuses to miss sharing meals with their family even in the midst of his most enthralling experiments, and A-Yuan always eats in the Jingshi when Lan Jingyi is away from the Cloud Recesses.
He lays out five place settings, and ladles out five bowls of rice—three filled to the brim, and two half-full ones for Xiaohui and A-Lan—and fills a row of serving dishes with chicken and vegetables and soup.
“Lan Zhan, that looks delicious,” Wei Ying says fervently, slipping in through the kitchen door behind him. His robes smell of saltpeter and ice water, both sulphurous and fresh, and Lan Wangji leans down to kiss the apples of his cheeks before sending him to the washroom.
“Go bathe your face and hands, my love,” he chides. “And change your clothes, too. Saltpeter lingers in the air, and you know how you hate to smell unpleasant things while you eat.”
Wei Ying takes an appreciative sniff of the noodles and chicken soup before clapping a hand to his mouth.
“Oh, don’t I just,” his husband groans. “Tian ah, that cleared out my nose with a vengeance. Have I been smelling like this all morning?”
He gags and withdraws from the kitchen, grumbling, and hurries towards the washroom. Lan Wangji hears Xiao-Yu cry out from the other side of the wall, protesting at the pungent odor; and then, less than two minutes later, his second son totters in through the folding doors with Bee-shidi clutched in his arms, looking vaguely ill from the sudden assault on his nose.
“A-Niang will get sick if the Jishi smells like that,” A-Yu says anxiously, tugging at Lan Wangji’s skirts. “Papa, can I clean it?”
“No, dearheart, though it is very kind of you to ask,” Lan Wangji replies, handing A-Yu a bundle of clean chopsticks. “I will air it out this afternoon, if Wei Ying hasn’t already done it. Now go sit down and wait for A-Lan and Sizhui.”
Wei Ying reappears a minute later with A-Lan on his hip and Sizhui at his elbow, and then, after a soapy-smelling kiss and a hungry squeal from Shuilan, their little family finally sits down to eat.
None of them keep to the sect rules about refraining from speech during meals, though Lan Wangji was sometimes tempted to do so when Xiao-Yu was a toddler, out of fear that he might choke on his food. Instead, they talk about anything and everything under the sun: a new novel Lan Wangiji read this week with Wei Ying, Sizhui’s night-hunts and his upcoming master’s examinations in music and literature, Xiao-Yu’s misadventures in the Baoshi with his friend Lan Minghui, and even little A-Lan’s determination to grow her own lotus flower from seed.
“Hua-bao will be all big for A-Lan’s birthday,” the baby announces, stirring blissful circles into her bowl of brown sauce and mushrooms. “But A-Lan needs clay first.”
“All big, sweetheart?” Wei Ying inquires, sending Lan Wangji a soft, smitten look that brings tears to the corners of his eyes. “Do you mean that she’ll flower by your birthday?”
A-Lan nods and beats on the table with her little spoon. “Mn!”
“Lotus flowers take a little longer than that to bloom, my Lan-bao. It probably won’t be ready by your next birthday, but it should flower by the time you turn four.”
“Too late!” Lan-bao frowns. “Hua-bao grows up fast. A-Niang will see!”
It’s Lan Wangji’s turn to send Wei Ying a soft look across the table then, this one signifying that they should infuse Shuilan’s lotus with spiritual energy as often as need be, in order to ensure that it blossoms by her third birthday.
“What’s special about A-Lan’s third birthday?” Xiao-Yu pipes up. “You already have lots of lotus flowers, remember? Yu-gege gave you one yesterday.”
“My Hua-bao’s different.”
And that, apparently, is the end of it. The meal comes to an end, and Sizhui clears the dishes away; and in the meanwhile, Wei Ying kisses Lan Wangji goodbye and goes back to the Jishi, trailing the scent of sweet lotus pudding and something uniquely Wei Ying.
Sizhui stays for an hour after luncheon, eager to discuss his latest qin compositions with Lan Wangji. But at last he too takes his leave, carrying a bundle of music books from his father’s study; and then, just before the sun truly begins its downward arc across the heavens, Lan Wangji brings his two youngest children to the lotus pond in the produce field.
Though the foliage surrounding it has long since begun to brown, the pond is as lush as ever at this time of year. Plants tended by shidao cultivators can remain in their growing season year-round without withering, and Wei Ying hates to see the lotuses go to seed and die; it reminds him of his time in the Burial Mounds, where every bush and tree hovered somewhere between life and death.
The swaying lotuses delight Wei Ying, like light tea in the mornings and clean talisman paper and brushes that sit just right in his hands, and it was a simple matter for Lan Wangji to make certain that the pond was always overflowing with flowers; but today, he passes them by and digs up a bucket of sandy clay, which he pours into A-Lan’s red flowerpot with a basin of clear green water.
“This is Hua-bao’s home,” A-Lan sighs, wriggling in contentment as Lan Wangji leads the way back to the Jingshi. “My flower sleeps with A-Lan?”
“I don’t see why not,” Lan Wangji smiles. “Come along, both of you. It’s time you had a bath.”
From then on, the lotus plant lives in a corner of the bedroom Lan Wangji shares with Wei Ying. He gives it small bursts of spiritual energy whenever he remembers to, and watches it grow and flourish like a weed—and thus, like his children, who sometimes seem to grow in both body and mind by the hour.
“They’re growing up too quickly,” he whispers to Wei Ying one night, when the two of them are away from home on a night-hunt in Wujun. “I wish there was some way to catch their childhood and make it stay, sometimes.”
“I know, my Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying smiles back, tangling his fingers in Lan Wangji’s loose hair. “A-Lan outgrew another pair of socks last week, and I almost cried over them.”
Lan Wangji tries not to sniffle at the mere thought of it.
“Should we send the socks to Xiongzhang, then?” he wonders aloud, pulling Wei Ying a little closer. “Jueying must still be too small for them, but she will grow.”
Inexplicably, Wei Ying laughs and shakes his magnificent head.
“Not yet, my heart’s delight,” he says gravely, with the mirth in his eyes belying his voice. “Not yet.”
__
A-Lan’s lotus disappears from the bedroom by the time they return to the Cloud Recesses, secreted away in some hidden place that she refuses to tell her parents about. She refuses to say what happened to the plant, or why she decided to move it in the first place: but she appears to have some kind of plan for the flower’s future, which she shares with no one but her two older brothers.
There seems to be some kind of grand occasion involved, though Lan Wangji has not the slightest idea what; and by the time his forty-first birthday arrives, two months later, he has nearly forgotten about the whole business.
Birthdays are usually rather laid-back affairs in his household, save for Xiao-Yu’s and A-Lan’s. Sizhui likes to celebrate his birthday in town with Jingyi and Jin Ling and Ouyang Zizhen, reserving the private birthday dinners for his family; and Lan Wangji’s birthday banquet is no different, taking place on the Hanshi’s screened porch with a few sumptuous noodle dishes prepared by Wei Ying, and with no one beyond his family in attendance.
“That still makes ten of us,” Wei Ying reminded him, red-cheeked and glowing in the light of the glass lamps by the door. “My darling, you’re going to be drowning in presents.”
And he was, since even Jingyi brought him a covered basket filled with gifts. Shufu commissioned a new copy of Lan Wangji’s favorite book, and Xichen gave him a white-jade ring and pair of cream-colored hunting boots; and Wei Ying’s gift was a volume of candid portraits, no less than a hundred of them, which he completed in secret over the last year and a half without Lan Wangji being any the wiser.
“I will not sleep tonight until I have looked at them all,” he murmurs, when Wei Ying swoops down to kiss him under the pretense of wiping a smudge of dark sauce away from the corner of his mouth. “Thank you, xingan.”
“No, no!” A-Lan cries from Lan Xichen’s lap, struggling down to the ground with a noodle stuck to her collar. “Papa, no get up! A-Lan has another gift!”
“Ah?” Lan Wangji blinks, watching with some confusion as A-Lan drags Sizhui off his chair and scrambles into the Hanshi. “En, very well. I promise not to move, Lan-bao.”
So he waits, sitting patiently at Wei Ying’s side with one hand clasped in his husband’s. At length, A-Lan trots back outside with A-Yuan trailing behind her, carefully carrying the old red flowerpot that held her tiny lotus sprout—but the sprout has grown into a full-blown flower, with its lush pink petals standing almost a foot over Shuilan’s fluffy head.
“Papa, happy birthday!” she cries, as Sizhui sets the pot down at Lan Wangji’s place at the table. “Hua-bao’s your present.”
“Oh, A-Lan,” Lan Wangji chokes, gathering her up into his arms. “Baobao, are you sure you want to give your flower to me? You took care of her so well, sweetheart.”
“Hua-bao is for Papa,” the little girl insists. “She’s a gift from Lan-bao, and meimei.”
“Meimei?” Lan Wangji glances over at small Lan Jueying, fast asleep in her swaddle on Shufu’s back. “You mean from your Jueying-tangmei? That is very kind of you.”
“Not Ying-meimei! Papa didn’t listen to A-Lan!”
She squirms off his knee and toddles over to stand by Wei Ying, pressing her tiny palms to the front of the girdle wrapped around his waist.
“Not Ying-meimei,” she repeats, drawing her black brows together in a thunderous frown. “Not Qing-jiejie’s meimei. A-Lan’s meimei.”
And then, in answer to Lan Wangji’s look of utter bewilderment, she says:
“A-Lan’s meimei is here.”
Wei Ying gasps, one hand flying to his mouth; and across the table, Lan Xichen lets out a high-pitched squeak, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.
“Ge, did you tell—”
“No! No, not a word,” Xiongzhang wheezes. “How could A-Lan have—”
Lan Wangji can’t quite tell if he’s still breathing.
“Wei Ying,” he pleads instead, throwing his heart and everything it holds into the two precious syllables of his beloved’s name. “Wei Ying, does Lan-bao mean that you—that we—”
Wei Ying looks up at him, his beautiful eyes shining with tears, and nods.
“I was going to tell you tonight, after Sizhui and the babies were in bed,” he chuckles, as the tears brim over and slide down his face. “Xichen-ge only noticed last week, but I suppose A-Lan must have been somewhere close by when he told me.”
“A-Lan wasn’t,” their daughter protests. “Meimei told Lan-bao she was coming, and then Papa helped plant my baby flower!”
In autumn? But it’s nearly the New Year now, Lan Wangji wonders, so overwhelmed that he wraps an arm around Wei Ying to keep himself upright. “Beloved, when do you expect the baby to arrive?”
“I thought late spring, or early summer,” Lan Xichen coughs, from the other side of the table. “So far, I’ve only taken his pulse and made sure the little one is healthy. A-Xian wanted to wait for you before seeing a healer practiced in midwifery.”
Lan Wangji presses a fervent kiss to Wei Ying’s brow.
“We will go tomorrow morning,” he vows, just as Sizhui finishes explaining the lotus flower’s significance to Xiao-Yu. “How do you feel, my love? You were sick so often during the first months with A-Lan, but if the child is due early this summer...”
“I haven’t been sick at all,” Wei Ying assures him. “Xichen-ge thinks I might have passed that stage completely, but I suppose we’ll find out after we visit Healer Liang.”
After that, the birthday banquet devolves into a storm of congratulations: and a storm in the nearly literal sense, because Sizhui spent nearly ten minutes sitting on Lan Jingyi to stop him from screeching in glee while Wangji and Wei Ying were talking, and now neither Jingyi and Xiao-Yu can be silenced any longer. A-Lan slurps up another bowl of noodles, seemingly satisfied with her work for the day, and falls fast asleep on Wei Ying’s shoulder; and after the plates are cleared away, Shufu comes over to embrace them both and ask after Wei Ying’s health.
“Ever since you entered this family, I have not gone a single day without thanking the heavens that you returned to life and married Wangji,” he says solemnly, while Wangji and Wei Ying are preparing to depart. “Bless you, child. Now go back home and rest.”
“Should I carry you, Wei Ying?” Lan Wangji asks gravely, as they begin the walk downhill. “Because I very much want to, at this moment.”
Wei Ying laughs and entwines their fingers together.
“Not yet, husband. After the little ones are asleep, my moon, you can do as you will.”
And then, so softly that Lan Wangji can scarcely hear it, he says:
“Your joy brings me all the happiness in the world, my Lan Zhan. Happy birthday.”

How to be a Bad Husband without Shijie getting Mad at You
A guide by Wei Wuxian
An arranged marriage au because i’ve been reading to many of them recently.
Just after the sunshot campagin, the jiang are still rebuilding, and jiang cheng realizes he has a problem
The jin want to marry jin zuxian to yanli, and take the jiang in as a vassal state, which he doesn’t want
And wei wuxian’s rep isn’t doing them any favors
He needs to rebuild his alliances, establish themselves, and do it fast
So when the lan’s offered a new treaty he said yes immediately, before reading it
He really should have read it, because it wasn’t a treaty, it was lan xichen, tired of his brother’s pining, offering an engagement deal between lan zhan and wei wuxian
Now jiang cheng can’t back out without losing face, and in this state he really can’t afford too.
So wei wuxian finds himself engaged to lan zhan, counting down the days towords their rapidly approaching marriage
As you can imagine, wei Wuxian is not happy about marrying someone who he thinks hates him and his cultivation methods
He complains bitterly to shijie and jiang cheng
Jiang cheng is as annoyed as he is but he can’t think of a way out without rhe lans drawing out first
Wei wuxian says he’ll just drive lan zhan away! Make him want to divorce!
Then yanli steps in, and scolds wei wuxian fiercely,
See lan zhan is marrying out, coming to yumeng to live to a culture he doesn’t know among strangers.
Jiang yanli, who was engaged to do the same once upon a time, has been trained on what to expect, a s knows exactly how hard it can be for someone who doesn’t have her husband’s respect
So help her, her brother will not be one of those faithless dogs!
Neither jiang cheng nor wei wuxian have ever heard yanli call anyone “faithless dog,” and in that moment she looks too much like her mother for either of them to cross her
But wei wuxian’s not out of the game yet.
No one knows lan wangji better than him
This goody-goody is here to play martyr, to play cleansing and keep wei wuxian from his wicked ways, but he doesn’t really like him
He’s hear to be a jailer, not a husband.
All wei ying has to do is treat him like a husband, with all the affection, touch, and teasing that comes with it! Lan Wangji’s three least favorite things!
Lan wangji will be screaming for divorce in a week!
Wei wuxian doesn’t get to put his plan into action until after the wedding, as he isn’t allowed to see lan wangji until then
But once its over, he puts his plan in full swing
First step: cuddling. Lan Wangji hates touch, wei wuxian loves it. So naturally to drive lan wangji mad, he needs to touch him constantly, sitting in his lap, holding his hand, cuddling at night, etc
This does not work. Lan wangji was a little hesitant at first, but now he seems to be tolerating it with only the slight reddening of his ears to show his rage
He even seems upset when wei wuxian isn’t sitting in his lap!
Wei wuxian thought at first that this was because they were inside their house and home, but when he plopped himself down on lan zhan’s lap at a sect conference, in fromt of everyone…lan zhan put his ARMs around his WAIST like this was NORMAL
Now wei Wuxian is the weird one who’s tucking his head into lan wangji’s neck, embarrassed
From this experience wei wuxian realizes something: Lan Zhan’s a secret cuddle bug!!!
He just never got the chance thanks to all those stuffy clan rules
And well, wei wuxian can’t leave a fellow cuddle bug hanging can he? Think about all thr hugs lan zhan has missed that he needs to make up for! He’ll just have to think of something else.
Step Two: presents. Lan zhan never liked any of the porn or alchol wei wuxian tried to give him before, so clearly he’s gonna hate it if wei wuxian gives him that and more!
Wei wuxian starts piling lan wangji with gifts. Porn! They’re married now so he can’t refuse! Alcohol, the best of the best! Spicy food he made himself! This pretty ribbon he saw at thr market and thought of lan zhan! This lantern with a bunny on it! That silk with bunnies…this painting of bunnies…
He might have gone a bit overboard with the bunnies
No matter what he gives him, lan wangji takes it with solemn grattitude, and tries it out. This proves a problem when lan wangji keeps eating the spicy food even as it clearly hurts him
Shijie frowns disaprovingly at him once while watching lan wangji guzzle water, and wei ying swore to do it never again
The less said about the alcohol incident the better
There is one more serious gift he gives lan wangji, one he knows he won’t dissaprove of. Smuggled among the presents and clothes, he brings in new “attendents” who look suspiciously like those wen remandents who seemingly vanished into thin air from their containment camp.
Lan wangji takes them in gravely, and soon their home is filled with the sound of laughter as a small boy runs after lan zhan
So clearly gifts aren’t working. Time for step three: sex
…..
…..lan zhan won.
Maybe all those gifts of porn were a bad idea, sullying such a pure mind
At this point Wei Wuxian is getting desperate, nothing he does is making lan wangji less willing to marry him. Its time for desprate measures…
Step Four: tell the truth. He’s never going to stop demonic cultivation and return to the sword path. He can’t.
He needed to tell him anyway, with all the touching they do, it was only a matter of time before he figured it out himself.
Lan Wangji says nothing as wei wuxian explains how he lost his core (still not mentioning how, he’ll take jiang cheng’s secret to the grave) how he was in the burial mounds, how its gone, gone gone and this is all he has left!
Before he knows it he’s a sobbing mess, tears and snot trailing down his face.
Not a very pretty picture for a husband huh?
Lan wangji only opens his arms, and pulls wei wuxian close, letting him cry himself silly in his arms.
It hurts, but it also feels good, safe, like lan zhan is a rock who will stay steady even against the tide of his own emotions
Still, it was a lot, and once he calms down he thinks this time, for sure, lan wangji will leave. He was kind in the confession, because that’s his nature, but surely, surely he doesn’t want to stay chained to a man who can’t even cultivate.
Jiang yanli asks to speak to lan wangji privately, to check in on how he’s adjusting, and wei wuxian sneaks in to listen, bracing for the worst
…when had the worst become lan zhan leaving?
Yanli asks if he has any complains, wei wuxian tenses, and lan zhan…
“I’ve never been so happy,” lan zhan says, because lan’s do not lie.
Wei wuxian is so shocked he tumbles from his hiding place. Yanli frowns with exasperation at him but all his attention is on lan wangji
Do you mean it? He asks
Of course,” lan wangji nods, then adds, “i love you” as if it were the simplest thing in the world.
Wei wuxian is laughing, he’s crying, he has an armful of lan zhan and the taste of his lips and well…
Maybe this marriage thing is pretty great actually.
The end

The second of two illustrations I did for the MDZS WIP Big Bang! I’m paired with the upcoming fic “If I Should Fall Behind” written by theladyscribe, in which Lan Wangji and Wen Qing enter an arranged marriage!
“The wedding was not what he had imagined, on those rare occasions Lan Wangji thought of his marriage. Wen Qing stood at the top of the steps, red veil dancing lightly in the wind. Red and gold suited her: a crimson gash on the white marble. Her stance was rigid, as if she, too, would rather be anywhere other than here, fulfilling the wedding contract made between their clans some ten years ago. A small comfort that perhaps he was not alone in this. * A wedding, a war, a friendship, a home.”
The fic will be posted later this month! :D Please keep an eye out, lovelies!

Wei Ying smiles like the sun.
When they were younger, Lan Wangji had felt scorched by it. It had seared into his bones and behind his retinas, ivory-bright and burning, and so, for fear of what would become of him if he looked too long, he had turned away.
Now the clouds have covered the sun, and it shines through so rarely that every glimpse of it is a treasure beyond reason or compare, and so -- even though he knows he should not -- Lan Wangji creeps forward on silent footsteps, peering a little closer, desperate in a wordless, formless, twisting way for even a glimpse, even a glimmer, even a tiny flash of that smile.
The bunny burrows deeper into Wei Ying's robes, and he grins, and it is like Lan Wangji is standing in the sun again after so many weeks of rain.
Then the wind shifts. Lan Wangji's robes, his ribbon, his hair suddenly lift and carry out far enough to catch the corner of Wei Ying's eye, and the clouds return so quickly Lan Wangji feels dizzy with it, feels sick. Wei Ying's back goes perfectly straight, and his face falls into an expression of cold neutrality. Lan Wangji has to clench his jaw to choke back a cry of despair.
His husband turns to face him without actually looking at him. Wei Ying solutes him with formality and grace. Greets him with "Hanguang-Jun."
The sun is gone again.
The sun is gone, and there is nothing Lan Wangji can do to bring it back -- not when he is the cloud that covers it. He should have turned away as soon as he saw Wei Ying in the field. He should not have intruded on this private moment of happiness, not when Wei Ying seems to experience happiness so rarely, now.
Lan Wangji returns the bow, greets his husband. Tells him "I am being sent on a night-hunt. I will depart this evening, and estimate it will take me three days to return."
Wei Ying does not ask to come along. His eyes do not light up in curiosity, he does not bounce on his knees and pester Lan Wangji for information about where he is going or what he is hunting. All Wei Ying does is incline his head and say "Alright."
Come with me, Lan Wangji wants to say, but he knows he hasn't the right. Wei Ying is likely relieved to have Lan Wangji out of his hair for a few days. Maybe, without Lan Wangji there to cast a shadow over him, Wei Ying will allow himself to smile.
I didn't mean to take it from you. I didn't know I could. I didn't realize how much power I had, how much I was hurting you. I would do anything to make you happy here. I wish I could figure out how.
Lan Wangji accepts the dismissal for what it is. He turns, and leaves, and hopes his husband will breathe easier with him gone. Maybe he should start taking more night hunts.
-------------------------
He doesn't know how long Lan Zhan has been standing there, but it's definitely been long enough to see Wei Wuxian rolling around in the dirt with the rabbits like an idiot. He tries to correct his posture, schools his face. Maintain a proper seat. Do not smile for no reason. Excessive displays of emotion are prohibited. Act with decorum.
It isn't enough. By the time he has himself presentable, Lan Zhan is visibly grinding his teeth. Even from here, Wei Wuxian can see the way his jaw flexes when he clenches it. He's expecting to be scolded -- pets aren't allowed in Cloud Recesses, and this clearing technically isn't in the bounds of Cloud Recesses but no Lan has ever cared about technicality when it came to obeying their rules. (Or punishing people for not obeying their rules.)
Still, it isn't Lan Zhan's fault that Wei Wuxian is exactly as much of a terrible husband as Madam Yu always told him he would be, so he salutes exactly as is proper between married spouses and calls Lan Zhan by his title, as respectfully as he can.
Lan Zhan bows back, and doesn't immediately drag Wei Wuxian off to be punished. Huh.
Maybe... maybe he appreciates the attempt?
Wei Wuxian is trying. He's trying so fucking hard. Does Lan Zhan see that? Does he -- does that mean anything to him? Does it matter to him that Wei Wuxian is trying as hard as he can, even though he keeps fucking up?
"I am being sent on a night-hunt. I will depart this evening, and estimate it will take me three days to return."
Ah. He's just in a hurry, then. That makes more sense.
Wei Wuxian nods. Says "Alright," to show he understands. Lan Zhan will probably pass his punishment on to someone else, then, or he'll decide what to do about Wei Wuxian when he gets back.
The stupid, childish part of Wei Wuxian that refuses to fucking learn wants to say be safe or come back to me. Wants to take Lan Zhan's hand in his and kiss the backs of his knuckles as a goodbye. Wants to help him pack, and see him off at the gates. Wei Wuxian has accepted that he'll never step foot outside the Cloud Recesses again, so going with Lan Zhan isn't an option for him, but at least a proper goodbye, at least something --
He crushes that stupid, childish part of himself as ruthlessly as he can. He has bothered Lan Zhan more than enough. The poor man is literally trapped with him now, and Wei Wuxian still can't be a decent husband for him. Lan Zhan deserves a few days to himself.
He knots his hands in the skirt of his robes, and bites his tongue hard enough to hurt, and doesn't move, and doesn't speak, and doesn't lift his eyes from the fluffy back of the little white rabbit until his husband's footsteps have vanished down the path, and Wei Wuxian is alone again.

this was in my WIP but it’s basically a snippet of the same universe as this short (which is basically some thoughts about an ArrangedMarriage!AU)
---
The first thing Wangji notices when he enters the Jiangshi is that the room is cold.
The second thing is that Wei Wuxian is laid in his cot again – the thin, useless thing his uncle had insisted Wei Wuxian sleep on when they first married.
Wei Wuxian turns when he hears Wangji enter. His thin face lighting up with a smile. “Hanguang-jun, you’re back!” he says brightly. He moves to get up and Wangji can see the way his thin arms shake.
The pain in his chest is familiar by now, but it hurts nonetheless.
“No need to stand,” Wangji says, quickly walking over towards the cot.
Wei Wuxian is already sitting up, the thin blanket falling down from his shoulders. He smiles ruefully at Wangji. “Grandmaster Lan will berate me for not giving you a proper welcome,” he says, “but if Hanguang-jun is okay with it, I will welcome you back home from here.”
“You can welcome me back as you please,” Wangji says, kneeling down in front of Wei Wuxian. “I will not let uncle berate you.” He reaches to take a hand into his.
It’s cold.
There’s a slight trembling running through Wei Wuxian’s thin fingers. His skin, red where it’s spread paper thin across his knuckles, is cold to the touch.
“The Jiangshi is cold,” Wangji says, bringing the knuckles to his lips.
“It’s my fault, I’m sorry,” Wei Wuxian apologizes, shyly taking back his hand. This action would have been devastating to Wangji a few weeks ago. He would have taken it as a rejection. A sign that his advances were unwanted.
Now…
Well, Wangji knows better now. He knows the fault lies with him and the thousands of things he let be misunderstood.
Wangji takes Wei Wuxian’s hand in his again and rises to sit next to him. Pressing against him so that there is no space left between them. He brings Wei Wuxian’s hand into his lap and holds it. “Don’t apologize,” he says gently, “How could this be your fault? Did the disciples not come by this morning?”
Wei Wuxian stares down at where their hands are joined. The red flush on his cheeks now all the way up to his ears.
“It… it’s wasteful to heat up the entire Jiangshi just for me,” Wei Wuxian says. He turns his head up to look at Wangji, and gives him another bright smile. “Besides, the cold doesn’t bother me much. I’m sure you can call–“
Wangji bumps his head gently against Wei Wuxian’s forehead.
“Who told you it was wasteful?” he asks, his eyes closed in an attempt to control his anger. His anger isn’t meant for Wei Wuxian. He has to be careful not to let it show.
Wei Wuxian is quiet.
Wangji won’t force an answer out of him. He already has a hunch of who might’ve planted this poisonous thought inside of Wei Wuxian anyway.
He holds back a sigh and rises to stand, Wei Wuxian’s hand still firmly in his. “Come,” he says, “Let’s get you to our bed. Why is this cot back in our room? I thought I had gotten rid of it.”
Wei Wuxian gently pulls his hand away from Wangji’s grasp.
“I had it brought back in,” Wei Wuxian says, his eyes on the ground. He’s a poor liar, Wangji’s learned, and he feels a fool for realizing that so late. “What Grandmaster Lan said is correct. I did spend a lot of time in the Burial Mounds and I use demonic cultivation… it could negatively affect you, Wangji. I mean… I don’t think it will, but just to be safe, I think it’s better we use separate—“
Wangji slides his arm under Wei Wuxian’s legs and across his back and lifts Wei Wuxian off his cot.
“Hanguang-jun!” Wei Wuxian exclaims, “What are you doing!?”
“You’re my husband,” Wangji says, “I will not have you sleeping on a cot.”
He sits Wei Wuxian gently against the headboard and brings up the blanket to tuck it around Wei Wuxian’s waist. He walks to the closet to bring out his fur-lined robe and he drapes it across Wei Wuxian’s shoulders.
All the while, Wei Wuxian blinks up at him, as if he doesn’t quite recognize Wangji.
“But…” Wei Wuxian says, “But your uncle…”
It’s a sharp stab of guilt in his gut, the reminder that up until recently, Wangji had blindly followed his uncle’s orders. Believing his uncle’s guidance to be the best course of action for both him and Wei Wuxian.
Never in a million years had he imagined that his uncle could be so… wrong. But Wangji’s limited imagination almost cost him his husband – Wangji wouldn’t make that mistake again.
“My uncle is… wrong,” Wangji says, and the words feel foreign in his mouth. But he has to say them. He must. Wei Wuxian cannot be allowed to believe that Wangji shares his uncle’s opinions – not about his marriage, not about his circumstances, not about Wei Wuxian. He sits next to Wei Wuxian and takes his thin, trembling hand again. “From now on, you must remember this – you are my husband. You are someone I wished to marry.”
“—Yes, I know,” Wei Wuxian interrupts, “You married me because you wished to save the Wens, because you knew what was happening to them was unjust—“
“—No,” Wangji says sharply. “I married you because I wanted to.”
Silence falls between them.
“You are Hanguang-jun,” Wei Wuxian says after a long while, his voice so soft that it only just presses up against the silence.
Wangji hates this.
Hates this quiet, fragile thing Wei Wuxian has become.
And it’s his fault.
It’s all is fault.
And the knowledge that Wei Wuxian willingly let himself be broken down because he thought this was what Wangji wanted burns a hole in Wangji’s chest.
He pulls Wei Wuxian’s fingers to his lips. Presses a soft kiss against his knuckles.
“Husband,” he murmurs against pale fingers. He looks at Wei Wuxian expectantly.
Wei Wuxian keeps his gaze for a moment before tilting his head in question. “…Yes?” he asks.
“Husband,” Wangji says again. “Before I am Hanguang-jun, I am your husband, just as you are mine.”
Wei Wuxian drops his gaze to his lap, where his free hand is anxiously picking at the skin around his nails. They’re chapped and close to bleeding. “But I am the Yiling Patriarch,” Wei Wuxian says softly, his steady voice a stark contrast to his nervous fingers. “Being married to me only brings you pain and dishonor.”
If Wangji could, he would cut his heart out. He would cut his heart out and show Wei Wuxian exactly how much Wangji’s heart bled for him and only him. Show him how the inside of his chest has grown cavernous since meeting Wei Wuxian, constantly growing and rearranging itself to make room to house all the love Wangji has accumulated for this man.
There’s nothing he couldn’t do, if only Wei Wuxian would believe him.
He grabs Wei Wuxian’s free hand in his and pulls so that Wei Wuxian falls forward just a bit – just close enough so that Wangji can press a kiss against his brow.
“I am your husband, just as you are mine,” Wangji repeats softly. There are a million other things he wants to say, but anything he could say in that moment would only bring him to tears or potentially hurt Wei Wuxian, and he wants to do neither.
He presses another kiss against the side of Wei Wuxian’s face before he rises off the bed.
Wei Wuxian stares up at him a little dazedly, a bewildered expression on his face. It was an expression Wangji had seen often as of late. Like Wei Wuxian almost didn’t recognize the man standing in front of him. Like he might be a stranger.
And Wangji understands, even if the expression makes him feel a little embarrassed.
He knows that his attitude and actions towards his husband have changed dramatically in the past couple of weeks. And he’d be lying if he said that this newfound… forwardness of his came naturally to him. But he couldn’t stand one more day of Wei Wuxian believing that Wangji just… endured him. He couldn’t stand one more moment of Wei Wuxian thinking that Wangji didn’t want to be married to him. That Wangji didn’t… love him.
He turns in abrupt embarrassment, suddenly feeling shy about how much he feels for Wei Wuxian. He goes over to the door to pick up the basket he had brought with him.
It steadies him, the basket, and the knowledge of how much love this basket contains. How could he feel shy about his feelings when they couldn’t even compare to simple bowl of soup?
“What is this?” Wei Wuxian asks when Wangji brings the basket over to the bed.
Wangji doesn’t answer. He just places a small tray on Wei Wuxian’s lap.
“Oh, do you have a task for me?” Wei Wuxian asks, “A letter to write? A talisman to make? Let me get off the bed—“
Wangji gently presses down on the tray on Wei Wuxian’s lap to stop him. He taps once on the tray as a sign for Wei Wuxian to stay still, and miraculously, Wei Wuxian nods back in understanding.
It’s almost unfair how easily they understand each other in the little ways, but it gives Wangji faith that someday they’ll also be able to understand each other in the big ways.
The soup is still hot when Wangji opens the lid, curls of steam flying upward into the Jingshi. The aroma falls not far behind. The heavy, savory, warm smell of rich broth and tender meat.
In the moment, he finds he can’t seem to muster up the bravery to look at Wei Wuxian’s face.
He carefully ladles the soup into a bowl, making sure to get plenty of meat and vegetables. Under the guise of carefully placing the soup on the tray, he keeps his gaze down, away from Wei Wuxian’s face.
He’s not quite sure what he’s afraid of.
But this is how it always is with Wei Wuxian. He makes Wangji feel big and small in unimaginable ways. Makes a coward out of him with just a glance and in turns gives him enough strength to stand up to even his own uncle.
Wangji puts the lid back on the soup bowl and stands.
“Eat,” he says, “I’ll go start the fire.”
He turns to leave but the faintest tug at his sleeve stops him in his tracks.
“…Husband,” Wei Wuxian says, his voice small, “Would it be okay if we ate… together?”
Wangji clenches his fists so tightly that they tremble. His eyes burn with unshed tears and his throat aches.
In turns he hates himself – because how quickly could he forget that his husband hates to eat alone? – and in the same moment he’s overcome with gratitude towards his husband.
His husband.
His brave, Wei Wuxian.
So much better and braver than Wangji.
He feels Wei Wuxian’s fingers slip down off his sleeve, obviously taking Wangji’s silence for refusal. Wangji grabs them, before they fall too far and holds them tight.
“Of course,” he says.
He quickly ladles himself a bowl and sits down on the bed, finally – finally – mustering up the courage to gaze upon Wei Wuxian’s face.
What he finds there makes him wonder what he was so frightened of.
Wei Wuxian’s cheeks are tinged with pink. His eyes are bright and happy and there’s a genuine, if not a bit embarrassed, smile on his face that makes Wangji’s chest feel tight.
They begin to eat in silence, and it is Wangji who breaks it first.
“I learned how to make this soup today,” he says stiltedly. “Whenever you want it, tell me. If there are other things you like, tell me as well… I… would like to learn.”
Wei Wuxian is quiet for a long moment, and in every silent second, Wangji feels the pulling tide of embarrassment.
Just as he’s about to be pulled under, Wei Wuxian grabs his hand.
“Thank you,” Wei Wuxian breathes, smiling a smile so big that it threatens to split his face in two. “Lan Zhan, you are my greatest blessing. Thank you.”
The Jingshi is cold.
Wei Wuxian is thin.
Wangji is inadequate.
But in that moment, Wangji burns as hot as the summer sun.

Prompt #1: A Simpler Peace
Fandom: The Untamed/MDZS
Pairings: Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji/Mo Xuanyu
Prompt Description: A few years after the death of Wei Wuxian, the Jins discover that Hanguang Jun is raising the last living member of the Wen Sect. Eager to use this information to better control the Cloud Recesses, Jin Guangshan orders Jin Guangyao to come up with a plan. The result? The Wedding of Hanguang Jun and Jin Guangshan’s bastard, Mo Xuanyu.
What I’ve Written:
Mo Xuanyu marries Second Young Master Lan in a farce of a ceremony. He chokes on the cloying incense, and the red veil, and the flower blossoms of the Cold Mountains that drift down and crown their unholy matrimony. He chokes on the very idea that any of this could ever lead to happiness, but perhaps they could find a simpler peace in their marriage, a simpler peace than one built on love. One day, Mo Xuanyu might wake up an old man at the end of a pleasant life. He found that he could live a life beside Lan Wangji, so long as it would not be a loveless life. They might not ever be each other’s soulmates, might not ever be the half of each other’s soul, but they could be partners, the half of the other’s life on earth.
Mo Xuanyu keeps this hope in his heart every time he thinks of the sixteen year old boy delivered up to Hanguang Jun on a wedding night that was no consummated. He remembers it every time he thinks of Hanguang Jun’s kindness and care, especially toward A-Yuan. The memory of it is enough to make him smile.
In such circumstances, this was as good as being in love.
Or: Mo Xuanyu is an interloper in the tragedy of HanguangJun. An outgrowth of weeds at the foot of a tomb of something great and beautiful. Lan Wangji and Mo Xuanyu are not part of some great love story, and if they ever kiss, it is merely the barest of touches. They are not the passionate kisses between lovers. There is no smooth glide of tongues. There are no breathless gasps.
But sometimes, Wangji simply places a rabbit in his hands and a kiss on his forehead. It is a light thing. The barest trace of skin, and the cool feeling of its absence. It reminds Mo Xuanyu of the truth.
This is not a love story.
And if it were, it would not be his.
Mo Xuanyu lives in the ghost of Wei Wuxian.
General Notes: I have no time to write this or to rewatch The Untamed to get things right and compliant with at least one fandom so I’m dropping this here. Someone pls write this. I’m leaving it open ended as to whether or not Wei Wuxian ever returns into this AU, or how it would even happen if he did. Maybe eventual happiness for Lan Wangji is just him, his son, and his husband from an arranged marriage whom he loves but is not in love with… or is he?

I just love arranged marriage fics in this fandom, and this one is a spectacular example of why. So much mutual longing! A perfect reveal scene that forces me to reread it five times each time I read the fic! Extremely hot sex when they finally get there!

Bingqiu "Marry Me" AU where mega pop idol Luo Binghe's third marriage is set to be a hugely public concert event, only shortly before the segment where he is actually supposed to get married, footage goes viral of his fiance Sha Hualing swapping spit with rival starlette Liu Mingyan.
So when Luo Binghe gets on stage, he decides to point out a random person from the crowd and marry that person instead.
He picks out math teacher Shen Yuan, who ostensibly only came to this concert because his meimei is a huge Sha Hualing fan and didn't want to go alone. (Lies -- he bought the tickets well in advance, and is a madly obsessed Binghe fanboy.)
OR
Wangxian "Marry Me" AU where idol princess Jiang Yanli is all set to marry corporately-arranged match Jin Zixuan in a big public event, except Jin Zixuan jilts her at the altar.
To cover it up and save his foster sister's identity, controversial rockstar Wei Wuxian "hijacks" the wedding and declares that actually this whole thing was a cover-up so that he could get gay-married to his secret lover and former rival from their teen years, Lan Wangji! Otherwise their management teams would stop them! Of course this is a lie, he's barely been able to speak to LWJ for the past ten years, but he's planning for Lan Wangji to turn him down in disgust and to be like 'oh no he broke up with me' and keep the gossip columns focused on that rather than Jiang Yanli's humiliation.
Except, then Lan Wangji gets on stage and uh... marries him?
OR
Hualian "Marry Me" AU where famous celebrity duo Xie Lian and Jun Wu are supposed to get married in a big public celebration/concert, only for someone backstage to film Jun Wu locked in a heated embrace with Xie Lian's own manager, Mei Nianqing.
Midway through dealing with this public reveal and trying to decide if he's still going to go through with the wedding or not, some of the hastily-erected scaffolding above the stage gives out, and Xie Lian ends up catching the (presumed) production worker who basically drops out of the sky and into his arms.
Taking it as a sign from the heavens, Xie Lian marries this random 'San Lang' instead. (San Lang is in fact a wanted criminal named Hua Cheng who broke into concert.)

House of Gentians Arc 2 || Extra Art
4 additional art pieces for Arc 2 of "House of Gentians" are available for my patrons, old and new who want to join. They are not time limited. 1) Wei Wuxian sitting on the window of the House of Gentians, bored, exhausted, thinking about all the events and feeling useless. At this exact moment Lan Wangji arrives to tell him that they are going out. You can see the clothes he wore that day under the cloak hehe
2) Lan Wangji on his way to Wei Wuxian. Many Juniors pass him and they know where he's headed. Nobody expect for the Lan family and the elders know about Lan Wangji's punishment, but they all know he was heavily injured during the great battle on Nightless city. If he limps or winces because of the whip lashes, they all think it's because of his battle wounds.
3) Lan elder follows wangxian when they're out in the town
4) Arc 2's Wei Wuxian outfit - with and without cloak.
See all arts here ________

I haven't done one of these in a while, but I don't get to complain about how fandom doesn't feel like a community anymore if I don't make posts myself.
So
What is relenafanel writing now?
I started writing a wangxian arranged marriage modern AU last yr that I'm still picking at. It's a big idea that seems larger than the effort I have the spoons to invest in it
yes i do this to myself too often
I'm also participating in the MDZS RBB this spring, so expect a fic in July!! I'll post more details about this later.
Teaser: I'm working with @anshares on a Buddy Daddy AU. I won't be able to do much more than give light teasers for this fic (re: the rules) so I won't be sharing much ahead of time except reminders that it's on the way.
But, raise your hand if you're excited for it!
Tumblr media
I also feel like there's a short ficlet approaching, but I don't even have an idea for a topic. I just feel a little yearn-y to do a speed write and shove it on the internet within the same 24 hrs.

do you have any whumpy fic recs (ideally romance, but gen would do in a pinch)? Open to any fandoms. I feel like I used to see them a lot more, but they are harder to find these days. Bbts really hits the spot tho btw haha.
ANY fandoms? oh boy do i.
Hotel Heart by Laughsalot3412 (and its sequel Safe as Houses): not quite romance but not NOT romance ot3 leverage psychics au where eliot is a hitman who used to be under the control of a horrible empath who left him with major mental scars and huge trust issues. he reluctantly ends up protecting another empath (hardison) and thief (parker) and sloooowly starts to work through the aforementioned trauma while they take down the aforementioned evil empath together. excellent series with excellent pangy plot. also i knew nothing about leverage when i first read it and it’s what got me to watch the show.
Hold my Eyes to the Sky by myrmidryad: an enjoltaire/les mis longfic set in a 1970s(?) wizarding au in which grantaire is a very sad and lonely werewolf and the idealistic activist he’s hopelessly in love with just got himself turned as well, and grantaire has to help him navigate the changes while dealing with his own self-worth issues and tragic backstory. you want whump? look no further.
Occultation by Geese_in_flight & pineapplesquid: a novel-length au of the book Winter’s Orbit, in which the main difference is that kiem, not jainan, is the one dealing with a previous, horrible arranged marriage. somehow this simple switch brings so much fresh potential to the characters (i loved seeing how this played into kiem’s self-worth issues, and also loved this exploration of what jainan’s character would be like if he had been able to flourish the last few years), with a whole new set of pangs. i recommend both the book and the fic!
爱不释手; never let me go by yiqie: a post-cql wangxian getting together fic with the classic amounts of yiqie pain & pining & h/c & devastatingly beautiful writing about the devastatingly beautiful experience of being in love. also blood. honestly most fics by yiqie probably fulfill this request (are you into vashwood, perhaps?)
Morning, keep the streets empty for me by feyburner: a wangxian modern au oneshot with self-sacrificing wei ying getting into trouble and landing himself in the hospital while pining very very hard for his cultivation partner. i’m reccing this one out of all feyburner fics because it has the obvious physical hurt but fey is so good at weaving pangs into fic that tbh there’s emotional whump to be found in most of them. also, god-tier writing in general.
the kite string and the anchor rope by fleurdeliser: a wangxian canon-divergence au that falls into the sickfic whump subgenre. the pangs! wangxian’s love for each other and for a-yuan and the way wwx’s desperation and powerlessness in the face of a sick child (and his own illness) clash with how the world perceives him at the time is so 🤌🤌. this is saved in my h/c favs folder for a reason.
The Long Way Home by itsnatalie: extremely whumpy batfam tim & jason fic, which i’ve definitely rec’d here before but if i’m reccing whumpy longfics it HAS to be on the list. good god this fic is a masterpiece, both for the angst and for the absolute beautiful worldbuilding/navigation of its horror tropes.
and since you like bbts, i’ll also self-rec a few of my older fics! i think you’d probably enjoy this river runs to you, a wangxian/mdzs modern cultivation longfic feat. (sort of) identity shenanigans, angsty backstories, self-worth issues, and the main character getting all manner of hurt. also: you’re the trouble that i always find, a wenzhou/shl dreamsharing/amnesia/sort-of-timeloop fic in which the main character is supposed to dream about killing his love interest but said love interest keeps dreamcrashing to change the plot.
this reclist could’ve been dozens of fics long tbh. i live for The Pangs which usually go hand in hand with good whump, and seek those fics out whenever possible, so as always this is a super incomplete reclist! also i welcome any and all recs in return.
