My real big problem with BuckTaylor is him wanting to date Taylor in the first place despite knowing what she almost did during the brownies accident, which also happened briefly in Season 2 until he decided to be with Ali because seriously, it just makes him look very stupid in comparison when he can be more than that. The only real acknowledgement to Taykay's behavior from the firefam that I remember of is that during Jonah's investigation via Chim and Hen's silent gesture, the same episode we're seeing her "true nature anyway" so it's redundant and Athena talking about her to Lou which does not go anywhere and she does nothing with it afterwards.

Babying Buck or not, Taykay's writing is riddled with stupid, stupid decisions one after another.

Look, it's really easy for us as viewers to question the choice to bring TayKay back as a real LI and then never truly address her previous behavior, but (IMO) we would have a better understanding if we thought like a show runner.

*LI is going to be temporary, mostly to fill the void left by Maddie (one woman leaves, another is available) and Madney as a couple. What would be faster/easier? Creating a whole new character, or reinserting someone the audience doesn't have to get to know? *LI's career should have some sort of connection to the first responder life so she can fill those gaps in screen time, but not be important enough where her presence or absence affects the overall story. TayKay is a reporter whose segments meant crossing paths with the firefam, but once the narrative shifted she was easily swapped out for another voice (they don't even need to be seen!) who could do the exact same job. *Not atoning for prior actions served two purposes: keep any newer members of the audience (s4 was when the fandom *really* took off, I think) from dwelling on a past version of a character they never knew, and hope that by not having Buck or any of his friends question why he'd get involved with her again, the audience wouldn't think twice about his change of heart. And for the most part, it seemed to work, especially around here. We've seen the gifsets about #charactergrowth after 4x11 when she made her "celebration" at Buck's about solving two cases rather than a promotion. Hook, line, and sinker. (Good thing those edits don't circulate anymore!) *Her work didn't negatively impact the people in Buck's life (this part is important - those of us who always saw TayKay for what she was had no problem criticizing her obsession with solving the husband and wife murder plot or how she tells other people's stories to hide from her own, but none of that hurt anyone directly connected to her bf) until it was time to end the relationship. When her quest for the truth crossed the line for the second time, Buck realized she was never truly going to prioritize their relationship or his trust in her over a chance to make headlines. Does it make sense? Not to people who over-analyze and assume the show runners like to have some grand plan at all times. But remember what Kristen said after 5A - TayKay wasn't even supposed to be in as many scenes as she got that first half despite being a reporter. She was always meant to be a "for now" option, not "forever", and the writing had to reflect that. (Unfortunately, not everyone could see the story for what it was, hence the panic over trying to legitimize her as Buck's future from Buddie fandom and then the BeeTees claiming the show switched things up last minute because they couldn't handle the idea that their fave was made "better" until the show brought all the mains back where they belong.)

Jyn and Cassian?

Hah, I got this right before queuing a Jyn/Cassian gifset, and I was just slightly revising (>_>) a chapter of Jyn/Cassian fic. I do indeed ship it.

1- What made you ship it?

It sounded like my kind of thing from before the movie even came out, but the reality of the tension between them, the underlying (and later overlying!) rapport, and the mixture of very profound, mirrored(heh) similarities/parallels with high-contrast oppositions is pure distilled brain candy for me. They overreact very quickly given the circumstances (they both jeopardize themselves for each other in situations where there is zero practical need to!), which is always fun, and they're always drawing physically near to each other (there's the justly beloved elevator scene, though the circling and leaning in the "welcome home" scene is my personal favorite), which is also extremely fun. :D

There's the whole concept of them as people who have been denied homes by the Empire and find it in each other, without rejection of the very important allegiances and ties they do have. And they're very pretty, haha. Also, I enjoy (for a certain value of enjoy) that their dynamic is quite blatantly romantic IMO but the way it's cut short through an almost random act of Imperial cruelty is ... it's awful but it also a) makes sense and b) makes me feel even more about them. They deserved so much better. :(

2- What are you favorite things about this ship?

That mixture of close parallels and sharp contrasts + tension/rapport + UST you could cut with a knife are probably my favorites, honestly. I don't want my faves to be too similar, but I like parallels a lot and I don't like losing sight of the ways in which paralleled people are similar, which is a fine line to walk that Rogue One walked extremely well.

In that, it reminds me a lot of my ship of ultimate destiny, book!Darcy/Elizabeth, where they don't have to be basically the same—and aren't—to have a strong and important fundamental affinity that ultimately pulls them together.

3- Is there an unpopular opinion you have on the ship?

Many, as usual! I dislike the hyper-sexualization of Cassian with all my soul—it's not something I care for in general and I often imagine my faves as grey-ace, but it is something I stick to more stubbornly with him as a reaction to the sexy Latino stereotypes with a character who gave zero indication of having them is pretty gross to me.

I think Jyn was more justified in the circumstances of the Eadu fight and that Cassian was more correct, which basically ensured my annoyance at every conceivable iteration of discourse around the fight.

Also, in AU-land, I'm agnostic (as usual :P) on them having children. I don't think they're likely to have unplanned children, but I can see planned pregnancy or adoptions once the galaxy is more stable. I can also see them not choosing that and having full lives regardless. The likelihood of it just depends on the scenario and the writing for me, really.

read your tags under the pran gifset where he almost confesses, and i wanna say both times i had watched it and after that as well, i thought it was too insincere so i said "no pran no", but yea it makes more sense now. i still think pat did good by not letting him finish bc he deserves a better confession than that, but from prans side of things, he was at that point, he Was ready.

from a script perspective, i think they're either aiming at a late, private, and charged confession or an explosive, public, emotional one. and idk which one I'd like more tbh 🥲

but as for when a 'confession' will be, i dont know if im in a minority with this but i dont really need it?? like yeah would it be nice ofc, and there are some things that make me think it would be good for the characters and progression. pran has always had to love so silently and wordlessly that ofc i'd love to see him finally claim his voice no matter the form, being a whispered, quiet confession just for pat's ears or a proclamation to the world. and i could argue for both, bc its in pran's nature to not be loud, and so i think a quiet, private confession just to pat, in a situation that had no pressure or expectations, thats casual and fun, almost like he's saying it as a throwaway line, like he says it before he catches himself, i think that would be lovely, bc it would speak volumes for how truly safe and comfortable and free he is around pat that he voices his feelings without thinking twice about it, that would be great progression.

but equally great progression would be a loud confession, in front of people, a statement, a claim. bc the time skip has really made it so a lot of unseen character progression couldve occurred. and i think we see it both through pran at uni, the way he steps up and handles the play and talks to the guy that isnt pulling his weight. and also with pat, how he's developed confidence to instigate a lot of their flirting as well as take it further where pat wont. i dont think pre time skip pran would have the confidence to do those things. so a public confession, if hes ready for it, i feel like is possible. the only thing i dont want is for a first confession to come at a time when people are arguing. like yes it would be dramatic if the families were arguing and pran said enough im saying it im in love with pat. and yes ofc pat would appreciate that kind of commitment and dedication to him. but for the same reason that i didnt want a confession during this rooftop scene, i wouldnt want a confession like that either. bc its forced. it says to pat im only willing to confess my feelings when under pressure, when forced to, when theres no other option. i want a confession to be pran's free choice that he makes, not a heat of the moment choice he's forced to make. in that situation its too much of pran having to choose between pat and his family, and thats a situation i dont think pat ever wants to put pran in.

as for pat, who has to dig through the layers of meaning and implications in everything pran does and says, i think he'd like and appreciate a clean and bold statement. just a simple i like you. but equally, i think he doesnt need or expect one. like i dont think he thinks he deserves or is entitled to a confession, which is one f=of the many reasons i think the bet ended like it did. bc as much as he'd like to hear the words, he also understands pran. he understands him so wholly and completely. and unless it was pran's free choice to confess, i dont think pat wants to hear it. bc as much as he'd want it, he doesnt need it. his understanding makes it so that he can hear those words through everything else pran does and says. its in his smile that lights up whenever he sees pran, its in the joy he radiates whenever he gets to do something for pat and whenever pat does something for him, its in his eyes that just cant lie, his eyes that scream i love you louder than any voice could.

so if we dont get a confession, i wont be mad. bc id much rather watch a relationship where love flows out of every word and action two people say than a relationship where they say i love you but dont show it. for them, i think a confession is an addition, not a necessity, and it holds equal weight to all the other ways they convey their love.

I am curious: what are your favorite scenes from your main ships (date, dair, derena...)?

scenes involving milo don't count, sorry!

for me, it's really not just scenes, but body language & just in general, how they are with each other, you know? dan and serena grin at each other and hug SO much, you can tell that being around each other in s1 made them both so happy, and even after that glow fades the way they look for comfort in each other... top level stuff. the way blair looks at dan... we never see her as radiant at any other point. she was not looking at anyone else like this. and gosh, dan and nate. they're both so comfortable around each other that there's absolutely nothing weird about like. discussing that one ex girlfriend whom they both share AND both were in love with. there is literally no other duo who trusts/enjoys each other's company so much that they're comfortable in a love triangle. (probably because they're more in love with each other than with the girl, but that is not the point. or is it?)

anyway, more specific answers. under the cut. this is one of the longest answers i've ever written on this blog possibly but you KNEW that would happen when you sent this ask, didn't you? (affectionate)

derena: i tagged one of my ds reblogs as 'the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one' and like. look at them! this hug from 1x10 kills me in the best way. they are both the literal embodiment of :D when they see each other! i love 1x10 as a whole moment, their entire thing at cotillion is so sweet and they're both so happy. the fact that he is talking about his chemistry teacher during this kiss in 1x07. that bit at the end of 1x05 when they talk about their siblings (being there for their sibling because of fallible parents being a derena parallel makes me simultaneously really sad and really soft, tbh). 1x05 gives me SO MUCH SECONDHAND EMBARRASSMENT but the way they walk off together arms around each other does something to me - these are two people who are still getting to know each other but who really like what they see, and who trust each other and. are just having a good time together! back when derena was my OTP, the 1x11 "your story's about me?" was absolutely a fave, too, and i still adore it, albeit in a different, more nostalgic way. i like a dan who writes cute stories about serena. no empty shell sabrina van skoneker bullshit. she is so much like you, daniel! you'd be shattered if she did this to you. don't do this to her. tbh, most derena moments from s1 are just A+ romance. the bit in 2x02 in the jitney is so funny, they're SO bad at being exes. the bit in... 3x03 i think?? i don't remember... on the contrary. when they're talking about dan's fling w/ georgina and serena's relationship with carter, the ease with which they talk and how happy/supportive they are of each other's new relationships... yeah. love to see it.

i also really like any instance of them having honest/open conversations. 1x13, talking about how serena is concerned about blair. 1x08, serena talking to dan about feeling jealous of vanessa. this bit from the touch of eva or whatever that episode is. 4x04 i think. this is the conversation everyone is trying to get dan to have and he's avoiding EVERYONE else. derena interactions in 3x21 (can't find a gif right now) - the fact that dan is with serena when her dad abandons them, the fact that he goes all the way there with her. 2x07, "i'm really glad you're nate's friend. he really needs someone like you right now" (though i'm cheating, that's technically a d/n moment too klhdflkgf). there's a bit in s4 where he's advising her against having an affair w/ colin, i don't remember the ep number, but the way he takes her side so easily and naturally and puts due blame/responsibility solely on her professor... yeah. 4x10 i think this ep is?? idk. but like my tags say, im sentimental about this moment because while what dan was doing was irresponsible, sneaking her out of the ostroff, he was the only person in this episode who was actually talking to her and listening to her and taking her seriously. nobody else was doing that!!

i probably have more moments i'm not remembering, but we're only 1/3 into this answer and LOOK AT THE WORDS, good lord, i'm sorry.

dair: my favourite dair episode is hands down despicable b (5x21) which i have heard is an uncommon answer. i just love the conflict resolution of it all, okay!!! 1x04 & 2x08 are like. standard answers any dair shipper will give, and i'm no different. i love dan being able to give blair advice and blair actually taking his advice even though they're not friends yet!!! be right back, yelling at the intimacy of it all!! 5x16, with their getting together (this little kiss and dan being so startled by it), blair admitting a flaw she genuinely does have and dan saying it's not awful because it's her, which is just. romance at its finest. those vows, good lord. 5x18.... they're having fun! blair showing up at the loft in lingerie for dan... the delight on her face.... (i know this moment blows up in their face but when she's there she looks so happy and proud of herself and this was like THE moment when i was like. oh. dair is really the heart of this garbage show huh).

i think for me, the thing that really sells dan & blair together is the serena of it all. both of them love serena more fiercely than anyone else, and that is what brings them together. (fwiw i definitely think nate loved serena this much and this deeply, too; the writers just wanted to pop the serenate balloon, which even i think was extremely unnecessary and ooc.) but (& i have so much meta about this) their relationship grows beyond serena. their entire s4 arc is SO good. i love how comfortable around each other they are, in such an adult way, in the sense of like. they both bring so much stability to each other? morgan tagged this edit "the marrieds" and like. yeah. b offers to help him shave. they're having breakfast & reading the paper together.

all the love declarations we got that weren't a simple 'i love you.' be your charming wonderful self (how could she not love you/ tell me what would make you happy, dan) i told chuck he doesn't have my heart anymore (you spent your life earning the keys to set you free when you were free all along!!!!) dan's pep talk to blair in 5x21 (already linked a gifset earlier, here's another one if you want i guess). there's definitely more... but honestly, the way the dair arc was executed was so good - while i do have my complaints, i also think keeping those aside, it was SO close to perfect. i love dan & blair's banter and gradually becoming closer and closer and closer. it felt very organic and real and GOSH. the way penn & leighton looked at each other while playing dan and blair...... it's just SO MUCH.

date: this is the hardest, because it's. *screams*. maybe you saw me losing my mind over those 2 seconds of nate handing dan a waffle? i love almost every scene with these two, even the hellish s6 breakup scene. my favourite episode for d/n (& also favourite gg episode in general) is 2x06 - i love the homoerotic subtext of it all. nate pretending to be dan because dan's name is the first name that came to his head. dan flirting w/ nate while tied to that thing, in his underwear. them becoming friends. and 2x07 as a follow-up to that! dan getting nate to live in the loft with the humphreys for a while. i am so soft.

4x09 is a terrible episode in general, especially for serena my beloved, but the d/n moments in that one? off the CHARTS. this weird overly macho flirting, in some ways THE most iconic d/n line. this entire finish each other's sentences nonsense. someone (i think it was ana but im not sure?) compared the energy of those scenes i just linked to the book blairenate love triangle resolution, blairena choosing each other over nate in the books, date choosing each other over serena in the show (if only! RIP.) after the saints & sinners ball, this cute little moment of 'youre the only one who understands me. please tell me they went home together. i mean. how could they not have.

3x07, them watching vampire porn together. a tag i used on ao3 (& also on here, once) is 'nate brings out the himbo in dan'. here is a prime example. 'is she levitating?' i don't fucking know, dan, what do you think?? (i was telling my partner that that's what i love abt dair vs date. around blair dan is an intellectual, a librarian, an art historian, a museum curator. around nate it's like dan is competing to be #1 himbo on the show. can my girlfriend actually fly? i don't know, dan. i can't believe you're seriously asking such a question.)

3x12 pep talk. (sorry about the shitty quality!) essentially nate telling dan that he (dan) is hot and that he shouldn't talk himself down so much.

dan making nate gay in his book. you know. his book from which blair found out he was in love with her. nads (who i will not tag in this billion word long gushy meta, because i value her sanity) once called inside "wish fulfilment' and. i mean. yeah

nate checking dan out at the derena wedding continues to be hilarious. hilarious in the same way as dan sexually fantasising about nate. canon really went 'let's give ivy some special easter eggs' and i appreciate them a lot!

i love the way they are around each other - so quietly attuned to each other. i showed my sister my date!husbands gifset, and she was like. yeah they're so married. and it's just stuff like how dan looks for nate over his shoulder, it's not even an active action, it's as easy and natural and intuitive as breathing, checking to see if nate is still there.

oh, that wasn't as hard as it could've been! okay. cool. im SURE there's more things i could scream about, because it's DN, the fact that they're non-canon makes me THAT much fiercer about them than dair/derena, to be honest. so many dots to connect!! anyway.

001 - Kingdom Hearts

Favorite character: On the villain side: VEXEN IS BEST ORGANIZATION XIII MEMBER. Shoulda stayed evil, though. I like it when he complains and screams about everything and hates everyone. He's one of my favorite villains, just, like...in general. So fun to write. Also attached to Demyx, but I actually liked him more in III than II because it reminded me of my rawr lolspeek weeb days when I f/o'd him without knowing what f/o'ing was and then transitioned this to shipping VexDem like heck. On the hero side: MY GIRL KAIRI! But honorable mentions go to Sora, Riku, Aqua, Ven, Terra, Xion, Roxas, Lea, Ienzo, any Disney character I loved beforehand (this is way too fuckin many to list), Merlin (OKAY I WILL SINGLE HIM OUT), Yen Sid (I'LL SINGLE HIM OUT TOO), you know what let's also single out the Mickey+Donald+Goofy power trio...just...any KH hero who isn't part of the Yozora stuff or the KHUX stuff. ...Except I also LOVE Strelitzia, and she is the only KHUX-exclusive kiddo I care about but I care about her MANY. (Oh, and there's a least fave I have who's a "hero" but that's a debatable label). I would go on about why I love all of them but...that's too many characters to elaborate on

Least Favorite character: See, I think the real answer is Yozora, but the thing is I just tend to forget about him or not care (unless I'm doing a weird AU where he's Noctis' bratty Nobody, don't ask). He kinda represents the Shark Jump and I don't like watching that scene where he literally petrifies Sora for not being strong enough. But again, I can just kinda forget about him if he's not fed to me through a social-media unit. The one I LOVE TO HATE is Master Eraqus. The man actually triggered me back in the day. He is purity culture. He is the overbearing parent who will not accept you unless you are perfect. He is by and large the reason VAT didn't communicate with each other properly. He was the one who taught Aqua to think in absolutes. He lied to Ventus for years and then insisted to kill him was the only option, and then, when Terra tried to defend his brother figure/friend without knowing WHY Eraqus was doing such a thing, Eraqus didn't offer an explanation and instead switched targets to Terra citing that the problem was Terra's lack of OBEDIENCE. Eraqus is just very "my way or the highway" and uses his moral high horse to justify doing things that utterly lack compassion in any regard, which is something that GETS to me on a deep level, and let me tell you, I hated him for so long until I realized he was actually a super fuckin fun guy to imagine as a Bigger Bad in AUs that either have the KH protags teaming up or have villain protags needing a "greater good lawful evil" figure. And I just have found too many good memes about him cheating at chess and killing children. I have to laugh. Making fun of him is fun. He's a ridiculous character. That said, this recent trend of "erase everything bad he ever did and paint him as the ultimate hero of the saga" makes me raise eyebrows for SEVERAL reasons

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): VexDem, SoRiku, Kairi x Jaune Arc (RWBY), Aqua x Rosalina (Super Mario Galaxy) x Bayonetta, IsaLea, Ventus x Papyrus (Undertale), that was six but they all needed to be mentioned

Character I find most attractive: Ienzo. HOO BABY he is adorable. I saw someone make a Valentine's Day gifset of KH and FF characters shortly after III dropped and seeing his smiling face paired with a romance quote made my heart FLUTTER

Character I would marry: Probably Ienzo, see above. He's also a very kind guy. Favorite redemption in the modern era.

Character I would be best friends with: I hope the Destiny Trio would adopt me into their friend circle the way they've tended to do with every other inter-world denizen they've come across. I would love to have them as my positivity squad. Or, y'know, two positivities and one "it's okay to screw up" guy. Just. I would love to hang out with them. I often worry that I'm unlikable to my faves, but even though I would usually prefer to hang with the villains, I can pretty much guarantee these three would be open-minded about me. (Do I kiiiiinda wanna be friends with Vexen though? Of course I do. He'd hate me but maaaayyyyybe he would see me as one of his pet idiots who makes him look smarter, and we could bond over our fragile egos?)

a random thought: You ever think about that one NPC lady in Traverse Town who refused to tell you where she was from because it was none of her business? You ever wonder where she WAS from? What her world was like? How she ended up being the survivor of the Ansem Apocalypse when it hit her? All I know is that when I read her lines out loud (I used to read KH speech balloons out loud all the time), I gave her a Southern accent for no discernible reason and I stand by it. That woman has a twang.

An unpopular opinion: I don't want KHUX to be canon because I feel it's smaller-scale and takes a lot of mystery out of the worldbuilding. I always assume that the KHverse just includes ALL worlds in fiction, and that includes their thousand-year histories, meaning the Age of Fairy Tales should've happened long long long LONG LONG LONG ago and not five generations. And whatever screwed up the world should've been more than just five people having a fight, and whatever saved it should've been more than just five people getting along, and Daybreak Town really suffers from having to stick to mobile-friendly graphics and therefore is the least aesthetically attractive KH town ever, and I don't like that Lauriam and Elrena used to be such selfless people. I do still love Strelitzia because she's shy and relatable and quirky (sitting on the roof) and she questions authority and if you go with shipping subtext she's probably bi (or pan?), but I don't like the "Lauriam's dead sister for his arc's drama" bit. I liked when Marluxia was angry because he wanted to run Organization XIII but it was in the hands of an idiot who wasn't him. And more than anything I just like imagining that the Age of Fairy Tales was something bigger, further in the past, and more mysterious than something designed for a mobile game. Scala ad Caelum, however, I like a lot better because there IS a lot of mystery there and also it's a very pretty town with an amazing design.

my canon OTP: I really only count the Disney couples as the "canon" ones, so this is a question of picking my favorite Disney couple that shows up onscreen. I hope I'm not forgetting an important one, but I think the title has to go to Aladdin/Jasmine, which is always perfect in everything. (This would be an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY if KH had ever adapted Treasure Planet, and if it ever gets the mind to adapt Treasure Planet then even if I don't care about that game I will immediately declare that Amelia/Doppler takes the KH canon OTP crown. *taps watch* Get on it Squenix)

Non-canon OTP: SoRiku, which I counted as "basically canon" after DDD until III decided it wasn't sure. But I'm just a sucker for how DDD is the two of them all "HE'S GOT MY BACK AND I'VE GOT HIS AND I'D DO ANYTHING FOR HIM SO LONG AS HE'S HAPPY." It's just the best kind of Friends-to-Lovers, except when you take all canon into account it's Friends-to-Rivals-to-Enemies-to-Friends-to-Lovers and that's a very juicy dynamic. BUT ALSO: VexDem, which is a nostalgia ship SO STRONG I had to accept that it eclipsed my former Vexen ships by a mile and I wanted to go back to my roots. That one, I have a much longer essay about that I'll just have you refer to so I don't repeat myself for pages. To make a long story short, their scene in III was JUST DELICIOUS.

most badass character: OOF THEY'RE ALL BADASS but in the end it's between Sora and Aqua, because Sora gets the widest RANGE of abilities across the series that he masters while Aqua gets the most POWERFUL abilities due to her Mastery (Command Styles seem like they'd be the most OP things ever in-universe and I'm here for it because flashy battle moves make brain go brr).

pairing I am not a fan of: SOKAI, Xehaqus, RikuNami, Vanitas/anyone not evil

character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): OH BOY. KAIRI THE MOST. YOU ALL KNOW WHY: lack of screen time, Fridging for drama, forced romance to invite death flags (they really wanted to milk that death to get people talking didn't they?), giving Alyson Stoner ZERO direction to actually follow up on Hayden Panettiere's performance. But then I remember that they made Vexen redeem and lose his entire personality and I just...uuugghhhh. I can't believe he died twice in this series. And then Demyx is FUN but also I know he's flipped sides as well, which means he won't be fun much longer! Xehanort seems to switch motivations to whatever makes him the biggest threat (and several of Eraqus' old flaws seem to be mysteriously glued onto him), Sora isn't a motormouth anymore, Riku just doesn't get anyone who cares about him anymore because everyone's distracted by Sora and Kairi, IS ANYBODY GOING TO ADDRESS THE ACTUAL ISSUES THAT DROVE THE WAYFINDER TRIO APART, oh God Marluxia and Larxene you're good guys now what have they done to you

favourite friendship: I really like each of the trios. But you know what's even BETTER than the trios? omg mar thank you for enabling me all day today 😭🥺🧡 thenks bestie ily :,)) and thank you too anon ! i should preface that T-T i have not read any other theories or analyses so these are just my opinions / impressions but i hope it’s entertaining to read about haha :p ! HYUNJAE - okay so audio cues... if you listen to the beginning there’s a sound of a bomb going off before the music starts ? and that ties into the dystopian / cyborg aesthetics that jump out at me of course, but what i immediately thought of was their no air perfo ? like we know hyunjae in the no air mv got that shot where he’s laying in the bathtub filled with water but also their kingdom performance with it also had those underwater shots ! so i think it ties into that... i feel like we saw in gen z, he’s a very straightforward person he says things on his mind which can come off as blunt but he thinks it’s better than not saying it ? which is interesting bc i think that speaks to his self- determined personality, he’s much more inclined to do whatever it takes to get something done, which i think falls perfectly in line with the “make your own air” phrase that he gets, if it’s something he needs he makes it himself, in a situational sense methinks u.u 

 JUYEON - JUYEON’S DJSKHDG i’m waiting for dri’s essay but in essence we see the gen z “juyeon is not such a good boy” shot and these text bubbles that pop up that say “sexy” “you so hot” “such a bad boy” and tbh i like this ‘concept’ ? for him better than his gen z one ? it’s not bc of the concept itself but i like the idea that he can “make your own character” as in he has the capability and power to be whoever he wants to ! you see him throwing white paint at the gen z canvas and i think ?! that’s symbolic of like a fresh canvas ! of remaking himself to whatever he wants bc the canvas is now blank again thanks to the white paint and flowers usually indicate spring ? so renewal and stuff like that ! i really like his, it’s also fun word play on “character” which has been juyeon’s intro in tbz (bc his name sounds like main character in korean) but yea :o ! i really love his the idea he can just repaint / paint over a literal image of him gives it the possibility of becoming smth new and that’s so so cool

CHANGMIN - SCREEEEECH okie um oh boy um *windows shutting down noises* this was so so so very different from his gen z stuff but i actually think BOTH are equally perfect for him ? the way that he set up the sparklers and neon lights on this very obviously trashy and kind of rundown rooftop with the cityline behind him is so ?!?!? LITERALLY making his own stage as his tagline goes, sort of like how the physical stage itself does not matter but rather it’s changmin himself that makes the stage special ! i talked about this in gabi’s set that i rbed ;-;/ but changmin puts a lot A LOT of stake in his position as a dancer it means almost everything to him as a form of expression from what i can see ? so he’s always trying his best to put forward the best performance possible and seeing this segment makes me feel like he’s doing just that ! pouring himself into it to make his stage pls i care him 

HAKNYEON - god i’m a jusadan but just u.u rest in peace me, i’ll ... T_T be kind of honest this one confuses me a little ? i have assumptions and i feel like i know ... quite a bit about haknyeon (LMAO) my best guess is it has smth to do with self assurance ...? the way he’s framed and the fact that he’s sitting on a bed in the middle of a church surrounded by candles gives me christ figure symbolism (where my ap english takers at :/) and the light that perfectly frames him in a halo gives me angel vibes too, but the tagline of “make your own romance” paired with him kissing his reflection makes me think it’s about self love ;;;; from what i can tell haknyeon has always been someone who really likes feeling validated and praised for the stuff he does well, which he does for himself a lot of the times too ! but sometimes i think the self assurances he compliments himself with is more for reassuring himself rather than bragging (which i think people misinterpret) so it’s more about becoming the person he wants to fully love and being happie with himself which *tears* i might be reading too much into who knows i just love him ok ... U.U 

KEBINNN - i know !!! dri mentioned this in my gifset tags but ! kev on kpop daebak (? was it) or smth mentioned how he strives to keep a childlike wonderment for the world around him, which is a reason why i think he loves drawing and sound / music production, he talked in a fancafe post once about an artist who turned mediocre everyday objects into art and he said he really loves that sense of wonderment so peter pan who “never grows up” is actually perfect for his worldview ahhhh T^T also kev really likes disney lmao, the way he’s doing this outside in this “neverland” garden on a balcony which is a part of this very typical apartment backed by a typical city bg also i believe ties into this turning a mediocre everyday thing into smth wonderful through his sense of childlike wonderment and his tagline of “make your own fantasy” (i also care him a lot this concept >>>>>>) and keeps to his referencing movie plotlines like he did in gen z jddkfj

SUNWOO - i also mentioned this in my tags on sunu’s set but this gives me 100 degrees vibes which i still to this day think is one of the most “sunwoo” vibe things ever, it’s a lot of him having fun and doing his own thing, and mixes both more mature and youthful aspects together in a way that i’d only ever describe as sunwoo vibes LMAO like the roller skating around and all the soap bubbles ! cute and youthful ! the crop top and celine wasitband (don’t laugh at me we all noticed) more mature and a callback to his gen z look methinks U.u, think sunwoo has always been a more go-with-the-flow or do whatever he feels like doing sort of person and so “make your own vibe” fits well with him in that sense to me 

SANGYEON - .... *silence* *more windows shutting down noises* *jess.exe has stopped working* OKAY i feel like ! sangyeon’s is also more self explanatory :p i love the juxtaposition of boxing AND the arcade type fighter games ?? like both require very different sets of skills i feel like one is more physical the other is more mental ? but both require adapting to changes whether in the game or the boxing ring which as leader sangyeon would know a lot about, esp being flexible and quick to respond to different situations, and the “make your own glory” i feel is maybe more on the nose, but tbz are this man’s pride and joy you can see it literally anywhere and for him, as leader, to have made it this far with tbz, winning rtk and building their popularity through their hard work and efforts really is building his own glory and i just HHHHHHHHHH

YES EYYSFDHSHF CHANHEE YES - i said it in the tags of my srb before deleting it so i’ll just repeat it here but CHOI CHANHEE !!!!! this detail i didn’t quite process first watch was the continuous flashing of lights in all his scenes, like ... from the shots and the set it looks REALLY empty ?? but the flashing seems to indicate cameras and photos being taken of him despite there being no people we can really see in any of the shots ? WHICH IS SO COOL i think the implication is like “all eyes on him” type which SO TRU i love that idea, like i said the walking past the wedding dresses ? v heavily implies fashion designer which i think you mentioned mar :o ! and i see it in the sense of his tagline “make your own stereotype” bc white wedding dresses are the very traditional / typical choice and obviously feminine in stereotypes, whereas chanhee is wearing a SUIT which is all black in a very clean b/w set with no color which i feel is very stereotypically MASCULINE and the glasses too, it’s such an interesting contrast of his “stereotypically feminine” features (in my view) with very masculine symbols, like glasses we usually associate with more soft hearted / meek stereotypes ? but the geometric shape of the windows and again his suit seems to indicate the very opposite ? it’s a mixing of stereotypes which i think is the point, by putting those together he quite literally makes his own stereotype and puts on the crown while the cameras continue flashing while pointed at him AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

YOUNGHOON - okie might have less to say about this one :o i feel like both hak’s and younghoon’s i don’t see the connections quite as readily but ! i think it’s interesting that his tagline is “make your own classic” but then in the scenes itself he has a flip phone ??? with an antenna (okay boomer /j JDHFKFG JK PLS) and a teddy bear while in PERIOD stylized clothing and setting where those two things are more modern / contemporary in origin (but also not modern enough bc ,,, it’s a flip phone LOL) like 90s kid vibes ? you know but as an emperor in the joseon era haha :p while eating shrimp chips and reading a (comic ?) book, like idk too much of what it means but it’s a cool dichotomy LOL, think it might also tie into actor ! hoon bc it’s make your own classic and i think acting has become a very important aspect to him :o after seeing what he’s capable of in love revolution and his atbz video so it’s interesting u.u (need help w/ this one)

JACOB - think my explanation in han’s set’s tags didn’t really make sense so lemme ... reexplain LOL,,, so ! similar to his gen z video ? like he’s talked about how difficult it is to open up about his own feelings etc. and he said it’s less bc he realizes he needs to but rather just to make other people feel more comfortable when it comes to understanding him, and like the whole breaking the mirror with his reflection in the wanna be angry jacob, it’s about freeing himself to the point he can express the emotions he wants to ! in gen z it was about being able to be angry when he felt that way instead of being tied by his image of being just nice ? and in the video with his pilot uniform not only does he control the ride but he also rides on it himself ! quite literally making his own freedom (symbolically), a sort of realizing he can free himself ? from what’s been tying him down and i think the really big smile he has while riding it just comes to show how he wants to feel :,))) (jacob bae i care you) 

ERIC - last one :p AHHH this is one of my favs too, the quite literal “make your own pride” I LOVE IT ! sooo i think the biggest takeaway i got was that of course in this video his “pride” is symbolized by the hot pink car (that he’s going to pick up his christmassy date in of course u.u if he has a license which he does n- his driver’s license in this was literally his aaa / boy version of reveal photo which in no dmv anywhere would a license picture be allowed to look that good-) and LITERALLY when he finished and takes it for a joy ride while sitting on the roof he’s STILL covered in the dirt and grime stains ! from working on it ! which i think is so symbolic ! it’s my favorite detail actually, he literally put sweat into this car which is his pride and now that he’s finally riding around in it, it feels accomplishing ! his pride ! love that, also when he’s grabbing a stub from that flyer i noticed he chose “youth” over the others (which was like .... ca$h, beauty, ice cream, hamburger...) which i think also just indicates that despite all this hard work he put in he still cherishes his youth and still lets that be a huge part of who he is (i mean pink car so of course) so idk i think it’s very neat go bestie mwah

I'm not sure if you've ever mentioned anything about this but how do you feel about show Roose? I was really sad to see his character get cut so much but I really like his voice,,,,it's a good Roose voice ( also it's CRIMINAL how they took away the Bolton's pink like they don't even wear anything but black in the show 😭😭 ) (( also also I absolutely love your art YOU MAKE SO MUCH GOOD ART OF UNDER APPRECIATED CHARACTERS ITS SO GOOD TO SEE 🥺😭♥️♥️ ))

I think the actor is very handsome and talented! I like reading his Interviews, he seems very intelligent and you can see the thought he put into his character and his scenes. He did a great job with the material he was given, and i think it’s very understandable and professional that he read the first books but then decided to focus his portrayal on the show scripts, because the way they wrote him was too different.

Did you read the books before you started filming? I read the books before I started. Well, I read two of the books, and then I stopped actually. Because the character in the books is very, very different to the character in the show. The core differences were he spoke with a whisper. He never raised his voice. He had no emotion on his face. I remember there's a [line] that joy and laughter were very similar. So you couldn't play that. It's fine if it was the Roose Bolton show, you could do something like that. The character was not written like that at all. So it kind of did me a disservice reading the books. So I put them aside and just concentrated on the character in the scripts. - Michael McElhatton, IGN interview

But also, in the end, what he mentions about the difference is part of why, as a book stan, the show version doesn’t interest me that much; it’s not even about him specifically, but just a general thing all the show characters share. Just like most other characters they adapted, they completely suck the fun out of the character grrm wrote - no leeches, no icy eyes or pale face, no pink house sigil; ending up with a character that pretty much looks and acts like every other dude. I don’t need Roose to look like Dracula (as much as i love it, the long dark hair for example is not book canon, since his hair is never described), but he should be memorable! Instead, i often hear that people new to the show don’t remember his s2 scenes, or mix him up with other regular looking dudes like Stannis, or otherwise don’t remember him. One of grrm’s biggest strengths is how with just a few traits he makes every character memorable and distiguishable; think about any random character and youll probbaly remember at least one “special trait” that sets their appearance or personality apart from the rest. The show completely falls flat in this regard, ironically making it so that the books make better use of the “visual medium” than the show does.

Apart from that, visually the actor is ok; Considering a Dance with Dragons came out at a similar time as the first season and the casting process takes a while, I don’t blame them for leaving out some details of his character descriptions (for example his “ageless” appearance or the small close-set eyes are only mentioned in aDwD). His height (175cm, influenced my hc for the book version) and body type are close to the book, though i wish they’d left him clean-shaven like in s2 for the entire show. He has a bit of a long face which fits with the book’s northmen. He’s no Supermodel but i heard him called handsome frequently, so idk if that fits with the book description “not handsome but not quite plain”; i love interesting faces more than conventionally attractive ones so i can’t really judge objectively. Voice is imo too deep (imdb also calls it “commanding”), i imagine him having more of a mid range voice; and the actor also just talks normally instead of being notably whispery/quiet.

In terms of characterization, as the actor hints at, I do not think they are written very similarly. Roose in the books is a character who is ruled by an underlying fear/anxiety that drives him to, at all times, ensure his own safety and health (I elaborate on this more in this meta); The show version the way i remember it does not show this a lot. He doesn’t have the leeching scene and if he has scenes about being obsessed with health they werent prominent enough for me to remember (maybe the Jaime scene included some book dialogue?). He is serious, but he does not act emotionless to hide his feelings (Though the show scene where he says he doesn’t drink was a nice touch; it is not completely congruent with book canon, but brings across the same idea that he wants to be in control of a situation and his feelings).

For a bigger example: Show!Roose’s characterization in the Red Wedding episode shows him acting very confident and in a great mood, bantering with Cat, and staying in the room the entire time while wearing chainmail; while in the books he barely eats and doesn’t talk to Cat, is shown exchanging threatening glances with Walder, and leaves early to ensure his own safety only to return fully decked out in armor to give Robb the final blow. In the books, imo, you can see that he is stressed out by the situation; because while he planned it very thoroughly with Lothar Frey, it is still a great risk for such a cautious man to take, and he needs to trust that Walder doesn’t backstab him.

Bolton had made a toast to Lord Walder's grandsons when the wedding feast began, pointedly mentioning that Walder and Walder were in the care of his bastard son. From the way the old man had squinted at him, his mouth sucking at the air, Catelyn knew he had heard the unspoken threat.  

They are not necessarily great story-changing differences, but to me still paint a different picture of his character. People always say “oh a character doesnt need to look exactly like the descriptions as long as the actor works for the story, oh you dont need to adapt every little character detail as long as the story is intact”, but do this too much and somewhere along the way you lose what makes the character themselves. The small details and human traits are what makes me love a character, so if those are missing i end up not seeing them as a an adaptation of the same guy, even if the plot is similar. I do think there are scenes in the show where you can see the scriptwriter read the books and put in some of the book characterization, but the general direction of the character is still different.

I also loathe the s2 change that had Arya as Tywin’s cupbearer; it removes one (/two) of Roose’ best chapters and also the one that establishes a lot of his character traits and Red Wedding foreshadowing. The Tywin-Arya scenes are everything wrong with the show; changing scenes arbitrarily to prop up fan-favourite characters (later culminating in stuff the s7 wight hunt), bad “feminism” (like Arya saying “most girls are idiots”), having characters act OOC to be more “likable” or “sympathetic” (like that weird “fatherly” way Tywin acts towards Arya), ignoring how people in that time period and universe act (as if a man like Tywin would even glance at a servant), etc etc... here is a great post on that scene by @turtle-paced.

As far as the post-s3 scenes go I’m not a fan (though i did not rewatch those a lot, so feel free to remind me if i forgot something). i don’t like that they made Ramsay the main character of the plot, with Roose merely as a supporting role side character; the books give Roose a great arc starting in aDwD that imo is needed as a continuation of the Red Wedding plot. They pretty much cut out the Winterfell aDwD story (one of my fave storylines in asoiaf) entirely and replaced it with forgettable scenes. Replacing Jeyne with Sansa not only makes no sense for Littlefinger but also for Roose, since that makes him antagonize the Iron Throne. His death scene was so bad that it makes me hopeful he will have a bigger story in the books, and that they just culled him because they wanted to thin out plots like they did with Mance, Barristan, and Stannis.

Though in the end, while i don’t like the show’s writing and visual direction, i do still thank them for making the Boltons such prominent characters; They seem to have gained a lot of fans through the show, and are regarded as very important characters (i even see them in some “great houses” gifsets). They are of course also important in the books, but not as prominent/central as for example Ramsay was in s6. So even if they are adapted badly (Show Ramsay is especially bad), if they make people interested in their book counterparts, it’s still some sort of a win in my book.

- 5x09, “your love kept me alive.” when the writers literally pointed out that chair is not even the dark option anymore and that their relationship has the potential to be the MOST light now… and then forced us to endure the light/dark binary with db again for the rest of the season anyway hahahahaha it’s fine we’re fine.

- 5x10, “i’m going to love your baby as much as i love you.” but especially “i love every part of you.” we love growth and honesty.

- 5x13, “she should be happy the first time around.” (this counts as a chair scene), “don’t marry him,” and the most painful headshake in the history of television.

- 5x24, “why would i be hurt about something that was in your diary a year ago?” aka the moment she finally fully remembered just how much he Knows her. the comfort on her face in this gif, knowing that he just knew before she even had to say anything, knowing that someone on the planet understands and doesn’t require explanations. such a simple little scene, but i feel so much about this facial expression. also, “i have tried to kill it, to run away from it, but i can’t and i don’t want to anymore.” the validation i still feel when i watch this part of this scene… unparalleled. his emotionally stunted ass ruined it 5 seconds later but this quote is so good that i’m not even sad about it. and, OF COURSE, “this time, i’m all in.” an all-time fave.

s6:

- 6x01, “my bet’s on us.” could cut the sexual tension with! a! knife! also, “the two of us alone in your limo. we’re really tempting fate, you know that?” tfw the sexual chemistry is so much that y’all can fog up the limo windows without even touching.

- 6x03, “i just want someone who can read my mind, is that too much to ask?” DOROTA… SHE’S FEVERISH!!!! also “you read me like tea leaves, chuck bass.” the scene isn’t much, but i love that line so much and i love the classic chair subtext of being able to say absolutely everything just with a look. and lastly, “i’m all yours. mind, body, and scheme.” A WHOLE HUSBAND & WIFE. PILLOW TALK LOVERS. TALKING ABOUT HOW THEIR DAY WAS AND GOSSIPING WITH A SIDE OF SCHEMING AND CUDDLES.

- 6x04, just the entirety of this episode really, their hilarious schemes and hijinks, s1-2 chair but mature and happy and Married™.

- 6x05, “if that’s what you still want. to wait.” i have no words. none at all.

he’s so CHEEKY!!! something i really adore about met is how he has very much reason to be depressed and sad -- and yet, even when things are hard and he is sad, he is hopeful. and he’s just so adorable, him learning about the 21st century and laptops etc is just... so cute! also the last little eyebrow lift he does in the final scene... you know which one i mean. that one. that is singlehandedly my favourite thing about him.

hmm, this proves to be difficult time and time again. i think met has tiny communication issues? which is completely understandable considering all of his background, but watching him open up to thun and seeing him being vulnerable with him was amazing! i love them a lot :’)

OH okay wELL, i’m always bad at the why bc i’ve never been good at explaining myself but okay..

natasha romanoff, my love my life my everything. this was never really a choice, it was like the character chose me, you know when you just connect with a character like they were made to be a part of you? yeah same. (i mean when i have the money my black widow tattoo is happening so like she’s gonna be part of me forever.) also, she happens to be the most badass ever, i mean those SKILLZ, and that killer thigh move murder me now. that scene in the avengers still gets me !!!! every time. the growth she’s gone through. she cares so deeply, just does her damnedest to hide it. slowly beginning to let her guard down with people she’s learnt to trust (also, the emotional wall and the lack of trust thing is so me and i just feel that on a deep level), making friends, finding a family, blossoming to become the best version of herself. the strength she has, her sense of humour, the way she just IS. i could honestly talk about her for hours on end. she just has a special place in my heart. also, i have the biggest weakness for redheads and scarlett so some say this was inevitable. she doesn’t realise how much she’s worth, and how important she is and how LOVED she is. mother and soul of the avengers. the strongest avenger. carol freakin’ danvers, the power she has. i’m mostly just inspired by carol. the “i have nothing to prove to you” line hit me like a brick. sometimes i wish i was like carol, because i spend 95% of my time trying to make people proud of me, or happy, and worrying about what other people think, AND SHE DOESN’T GIVE A DAMN. and that’s one of my favourite things about her. this life was very much forced on her, and the way she deals with it is incredible. her sarcasm and wit is literally everything. also, her friendship with fury is life, and giVE ME CAROL AND MARIA NOW. when she’s trying to discover herself again, and realises that she’s worthy af and she doesn’t need anyones approval, it hit me like a tonne of bricks. i want to be a little bit more like carol danvers. also, she’s so freakin’ powerful, and like honestly that bit in endgame i’m still yelling tbh.

SPECIAL MENTION to my baby boy bruce banner, who if i was any character in the mcu it would probably be him, he has my entire heart and soul. this grumpy, stressed, science geek, that shows all his emotions (by turning green but you know i don’t quite go that far) he has a giant heart, he is so smart, and ridiculous, and clumsy at times and basically i would die for bruce banner, he deserves the world and he was very almost 3rd place and then i felt bad leaving him out of this post to here we are. Favorite Christmas Movies:

Now I’ll be honest, my favorite is the original animated Grinch. Like I love that special so much. I haven’t watched it this year but I feel like that’s because this year part of my brain has decided to be the Grinch itself so whoops. Not like the mean ruin Christmas parts but like the “Christmas kinda stinks” parts.

Let’s Peanuts. I have a Charlie Brown tree, have for the past... idk 5 years now? Usually it sits in my room but I didn’t put it in here this year, nor did I uhhh assemble it. Tells you how ready for the holidays I have been. 

Does any one remember the Good Luck Charlie Christmas movie because I really like that one too. Actually have a bit of a fond memory of my mother and I watching it just the two of us, laughing our asses off, having a good time. 

Fave Books:

Well I’m not really much of a reader anymore. I say anymore because in like 4th grade I was holding that 12th grade level reading shit and it made me really hate reading for the most part because we could only pick from like certain grade levels and I found the majority of books to be boring as shit. One trip to detention also may have helped me despise reading a bit more. So honestly i read like a lot more comic books than I do books. And the only real book I’ve picked up in the past who knows how many years I’ve talked about a lot so today I’m gonna talk about my favorite comic books. 

I’m gonna start on Shade, The Changing Girl/Woman. So Shade was one of the first ones I really picked up. I mostly got it because it was under the DC’s Young Animal imprint and my mind said “Hey if Gerard Way (since he was leader of the uhhh imprint, I guess that’s how to phrase it) thinks this is fucking amazing maybe I will too.” And honestly it was one hell of a trip where I loved every minute of it . There’s a lot of themes of being lost and trying to figure yourself out (I mean that’s my takeaway from it at least) and I connected with that. Also I found it to be really artsy there’s these insane panels that are just gorgeous and take up like 2 whole pages and tell a story alone with everything. And the colors! They’re super vivid and I just got lost in this wondrous world of the series itself. 

Speaking of Gerard & the Young Animal imprint... Doom Patrol. What a beautiful series in both comic and TV show form. Many dynamic characters and a sense of comfort. I remember this one interview, they’re asking Gerard about comics, specifically Doom Patrol, and they ask him about what really brought him to it and I could be remembering this wrong but he said something along the lines of “It was the first comic book I knew of that showed a therapy session, it showed that it was okay to not be okay”. It’s been a while since I’ve either read or heard that interview but like... That kinda stuck with me. And I feel like that can still apply to the comic today. Like it’s a very well driven comic and it does have those moments where it’s like “Hey, we all have problems and that’s okay.” It’s almost reassuring to me. Because you can watch these characters be in their own little problems and they try to work through them the best they can. And that’s important to me. That’s how I feel also currently. I have my own problems, trying to work through them. I think the only complaint I’d ever give you about Doom Patrol would be focused in on issue 8 because fucking cat sex. But like... it’s a weird comic I’m gonna allow it to do that. 

How I learned to make GIFs:

Long story short. I used to use like EZGIF to make GIFs on my own and.. they fucking sucked. So I downloaded Photoshop and was like “Fuck it I’ll learn to make a GIF on my own.” So I started playing around with things and at one point in time I look up a tutorial from a big name GIFmaker on the site and I try following it. And I was like “Well this doesn’t seem to bad” (Also didn’t help that there’s an action line that does the majority of my work for me. I just have to select frames, crop/resize, and maybe fuck around with colors if I want to lol) And then I was like “Hey what if I posted these to tumblr.” Enter my uhhh Ways To Fake It GIFset. That was the first one I did. I cherrypicked some scenes and was like “I think these will look good” Played around with colors a lil (I really don’t do that much anymore I think the last set I played around with colors on was Falling) and I was like “Okay these look great”. Of course I also had to make sure they fit that 3mb limit. (I know it’s like 5 now but I prefer keeping it to 3mb to keep it as uncompressed as possible... with lossy already usually lol, so it’s a lil compressed but not like YouTube video compression fucking you over compression. If that even somehow makes sense.) And yeah then I just kinda started playing around with some more videos and stuff. Like I have some old GIF tests hanging around including some text tests. And then I just started making some ones at random. Like I have a shitton from like random Strokes videos & so. And then I just kinda fell into making sets I was like “fuck it these videos/artists are cool they get sets because it’s my blog and I say so” (Also how I ended up with that whole Saturday series as I call it.) Another thing too was I was discovering these videos and stuff that I didn’t know existed and I was like “Hmm yeah I’ve never seen GIFs of this in my life let me fix it.” (This is how I accidentally because #1 CRX/Nick V. content provider, because turns out there’s a lot of stuff out there) so yeah. That’s that I guess. That really did not answer that question much but longer story way shorter: a tutorial and photoshop experimentation.

some thoughts on Downton Abbey s3 (cross-posted to dreamwidth, livejournal, and pillowfort):

Thomas’ plot was as painful to watch as I imagined. Okay, his feud with O’Brien (I’ve seen up to 4x01 and I know she leaves, and I think the way she does it is hilarious xD) was kind of funny at the beginning, but. Honestly, I can’t wait for Jimmy to go away. I hatehatehate that whole story-line. Be Gone. The “I am not foul” scene, which I had seen before in gifsets, legit had me tearing up *sniffs*. Though my favourite part of it all was when Bates helped him, only to end up with Thomas as his superior, much to his chagrin xDD (and all because Thomas is good at cricket and ROBERT IS A CHILD LMAO).

I’M GOING TO MISS SYBIL SO MUCH (this and Thomas’ SL were the reasons I never managed to make myself catch up after season 2 tbh). My sweet darling. And she basically had nothing to do this season, which sucks. Everyone’s grief was so painful to watch too, specially Cora’s :’(

Violet >>>>> everything, as always. Seeing her with Cora’s mother (who I adored LOL) was one of my fave parts of the season. Like when she and Mary were trying to seduce money out of her LMAO. I loved how she tackled The Branson Problem xDD. And I’m torn about how she strong-armed the doctor into telling Cora that Sybil would’ve died either way, for Robert’s sake, because OTOH that was so HER, but on the other. Can Robert ever face serious consequences for his dumbassery? I know the answer is no, but STILL. And now that Matthew is dead I expect a lot more idiotic behavior from him in s4 ¬¬

Mary and Matthew were adorbs (the whole pre-wedding kiss/wedding sequences were A++), but I wanted to smack him over the head with the whole inheritance thing, ugh. I’m going to miss them together, though. I was always more or less neutral wrt Matthew by himself, but as a ship they are so so good. Though I’m really looking forward to how Mary’s story evolves from here; if I didn’t like her so much I might be kind of annoyed at how much devotion she gets from the writing, but as it is I always enjoyed it (as long as I ignored a huge chunk of the fandom lol).

It’s a good thing I know Edith gets a happy ending, because otherwise I would have flipped ngl. THAT guy left her at the altar?? THAT guy?? UGH. And I had to see her pursue him knowing it was going to happen :/. I hope her endgame dude was better, at least. At least things seem to be looking up? Though I assume things will go wrong with the editor, smh. Professionally speaking/in terms of self-confidence, she is doing a lot better. Also, she should wear red all the time, pls and thank u.

Deke's surviving skills are something I need lol I'd have never thought about, running to hide in the vents like that, and of course he lived such a shitty life, he'd know where to go Also Deke's speech about how he comes from another universe is one I made several times? because if their changes affect Deke's timeline, then they never went to a destroyed world and they won't change it and re-start the paradox. If Deke dies, it's because of a fight he's in. And Jemma is once again betting her life on theories they have

Deke 'self-serving' tho... the guy literally went to die to bring the team home and save the world, instead of escaping with other humans or letting Daisy go to Enoch while he stayed with the team, and he’s been trying to give people back up and help instead of ditching them, but okay 

can the show also properly acknowledge that Deke was a human enslaved and forced to grow up inside the Lighthouse, watching his loved ones get sent to die as a kid, forced to live a life in which he had to take care of himself, and had never seen the outside world, just heard some stories about the fantastic past planet and then fixing the framework so he could see a replica of it himself, but of course nothing tasted or smelled right since he never really got the chance to see the real thing, and lemons were a treasure and people almost killed each other over disgusting food tossed to them the way you give animals theirs, pouring it on the ground (food used to sterilize them to control the population), and sometimes the matrics shoved in their arms went red and you had to kill people or be killed until you were one of the left standing? it's not only traumatic, it's hell, and this man is so well-adjusted, considering, and he just wanted to see the real world but instead he chose to stay at the Lighthouse and help ?? because it was killing me, the way he was freaking out in the elevator 

someone who can actually upload gifs on tumblr should make a gifset of all the horrors we have seen in that future and of the things Deke told us about it  

I LOVE DAVIES AND TALBOT SO MUCH, all their lines! And Piper mentioning it’s two who can’t be killed - including Davies in it, the writers were teases lol

also Mack in this whole episode is amazing, but I'm dying at the Moment(tm) they made out of him letting Coulson borrow a shotgunaxe (I commented on his fight with Elena under the read more but in any case I agree with both)

I love that Coulson keeps trying to confess at every turn, or at least address May's confession and how can Talbot control the powers??

some Jemma / Jemma & Fitz critical stuff:

oh god, I could have been okay with Jemma going against Daisy orders just because she believes Daisy is focusing on Coulson so she had to do something about the particle accelerator, and having a fight with Daisy, but not with the way she was at the beginning of the ep, like she's siding with Fitz, can't look at people in the eyes, and hugging herself every time she's uncomfortable - she did it when Fitz was cutting Daisy, she did it when Daisy looked at her and Fitz angrily in this episode - because it's still and always giving me the vibes of 'wife who will literally accept anything from her husband and claim that nothing is wrong, they need no help, just love, but is actually internally freaking out'

also now Fitz critical stuff after read more (and always not happy with Fitz and Jemma's relationship too), I'll try to refrain from writing more about this (but people, including me, criticize Jemma all the time, it's criticism not being anti, so I shouldn't feel so nervous saying it), and I just need to get it out of my chest, but before that I'll write one thing here:

I will never find Fitz being so hard on Deke funny, none of the scenes where he is make me smile, they just make me roll my eyes. It's why I also block the anti tag. Because I can agree with criticism against Deke, especially from Daisy, but when it comes to those scenes I just... cannot find it humorous. I found funny the 'ugh Deke' part back in the future with the whole team being done, even if I liked him it didn’t matter, it was funny to me, but the way it's playing now? not my thing.  

it just makes me think that while Fitz and Jemma could always be rude to people, this is too different from how he was before, the level of it, the attitude, especially in the context of everything else he did and said recently - can you imagine Fitz being like that with Skye in s1 when in the first episodes she tried to joke around and didn't understand science, so she had several goofy moments? or with Ward, constantly, instead of trying to be nice to him too and warming up to each other? or with Hunter who is so much like Deke? and Fitz himself knows what it's like to look for a connection and get that kind of attitude, the 'you are not smart enough, good enough' especially from a parental - or grandparent - figure? so uh... no. To me there was also never anything wrong in Fitz being much nicer before. There are plenty people who are caring and forgiving and would put aside their needs to help others while still not letting others walk over them.

I always complain about Jemma's flaws, for example how she can be hypocritical as hell, so I think it's fair that I admit what I don't like about him either, and if this is the new Fitz, I miss the old one. If I met this character now I wouldn't like him, same way I don't like Sherlock. I loved Fitz so much, the way he was, he wasn't perfect but he was amazing to me, but the character he is now? he's not one I'd be a fan of. He's NOT badly written, like Jemma who has no realistic reactions, just not my cup of tea as a character or person. (Now Jemma, if she had realistic reactions, would probably not be my fave person either, I can't know because she’s everything that other characters will need her to be depending on the scene). It's one example of how traumas can change people, but I don't have to like the way you become just because it has a good explanation.  

Which is why the fight Mack and Elena had was exactly the kind of fight I have wanted for FS in s2 when Jemma was starting to unravel and be murder-y with Ward, and also a similar fight about Fitz thinking she'd be capable of hurting Daisy, and also a fight about change that was resolved, and possibly I just wanted that kind of fight and conflict and messed up emotions and 'we've been through too much and it messed you up' now in season 5 with the way Fitz has been since the Framework (but because she loves him, everything is okay?) I find unsettling that Jemma was just okay with everything he was saying, always.

Why don't you ship Captain Canary?

That’s a complicated question with a complicated answer.

It’s hard because I’m compelled to be honest because I respect my anons enough to give a serious, honest answer to pretty much every ask I actually take the energy to respond to, but I feel like any person who would ask this doesn’t actually want my honest answer from it. Last time I answered a question about CC, I was accused of attacking the anon because I summarily disagreed with the points they were making and explained why. 

So, if I say this question feels a bit like an accusation, I hope you understand that it’s because it makes me nervous to go into negative detail about another ship and to know that it can ruffle feathers even with the best intentions. I’ve always been 100% disinterested in bullshit like ship wars and I don’t consider CC as in any way counter to anything else. I just… don’t ship it.

But I’ll answer my reasons for why honestly, leave it out of the ship tags, and hopefully you respect my answer.

The reason I don’t ship CC is a mix of on-screen chemistry, characterization, Sara’s seeming genuine dislike of Len at the outset and lack of attraction to him throughout, and… the shippers.

To go into detail on those. Their on-screen chemistry is amazing, and to a certain extent, I do ship them. I ship roguecanary (len x mick x sara), or Len and Sara for a fling, a dirty make-out in a dark corner sometime, a quickie in a supply closet sometime. I also ship them in the sense that they could, in theory, be a much much slower burn. I genuinely thought they might have a slow progression across two seasons or so, back when it first looked like there might be something between them, that they had some mild flirting. I think I might of liked that, and I certainly wasn’t against it. Killing off Len kind of accelerated that timeline though, if it existed.

But what I don’t ‘ship’ about their on-screen chemistry is that it feels so much more like friendship to me than romance. And that’s fine for some people. But the same way I don’t ship sn*wb*rry because I literally cannot see them as anything other than friends, and simply do not see romantic chemistry there at all, I also don’t see any genuine romantic chemistry between Len and Sara. That they become friends is sort of undeniable and I loved to see them playing cards and having insight into one another, but I didn’t feel that needed to be romantic and I thought it was better off being what it was, simply. 

Characterization-wise? Well, this isn’t anyone’s fault, but I was a pretty hard Nyssara shipper, so Sara’s prior characterization made me not want to ship her with anyone other than Nyssa for a while. I’ve finally relaxed off that after it became clear I’d never get to see them together again, but it was hard letting go of that canon ship. I also found the logical ship for Len to be with Mick, because of their amazing dynamic. I found their chemistry to veer more toward romantic than Len and Sara’s did half the time. Moving in sync, the angsty break up, literally willing to die for each other, having a little memento ring, inside words, Mick being the only one Len seemed to initiate contact with. 

So none of that helped. But none of that made CC a nOTP either? I mean, it’s not really a nOTP across the board. like i said, i do ship roguecanary or len and sara for a fling or an open thing, a casual understanding.

But Sara disliking Len at the outset did make give me an anti-romance sense. And throughout the entire season, she seems disinterested in him romantically.

Contrary to people with shipper goggles on when they watch that deleted scene from the pilot, I see her being annoyed by him and like she finds him distasteful. they get along for a drink by the end of the episode and she’s teasing him, they get closer, but she also says that she literally doesn’t like him when they’re dying of the cold. teasing? maybe, idk, but it’s not really something you say to someone you’re crushing on. it just seems so very platonic and also like the notion of being with him makes her uncomfortable. it’s hard for me to read her otherwise. he alludes to his feelings about her when he’s deflecting talking about mick and she looks surprised then impassive, completely shutting it down. he mentions thinking of a future with her when she’s already upset and doesn’t want to talk to him and she… well she basically tells him to fuck off? but as a “soft” no instead of a hard no, because maybe she doesn’t have her feelings sorted out but now is obviously not the time and she’s not interested in pursuing things with him with how things stand. 

but basically, she never demonstrates reciprocal interest in him at all. and we know that she’s not especially shy when it comes to expressing herself, her attractions, or her intentions. i know it would be more complicated with a teammate, but i don’t think she’d be dishonest about her feelings either; she values honesty far too much for that.

and this makes him a pursuant of a person who is totally uninterested in him, and that’s a place i’ve been? people uncomfortably trying to pursue their attraction to me when i’d shut them down already? it’s not a pleasant position to be in, after a while. and i trust that len’s not so much a creep that he’d push it after getting a clear answer from her, but it still wasn’t something i found… romantic? endearing? a little cute in the scene where he says “my feelings about you” when deflecting, but if he were pursuing it further after she gave him that “have to steal a kiss” line without getting a clear signal from her that she’d changed her stance, it would have actually pissed me off.

anyway… so there’s all that.

there’s also… if you look at that ask i linked above, that’s the type of thing that really pushes it into… i have the ship tag blacklisted because stuff like that annoys me. and look, it happens in the coldflash fandom too, and i ignore it then as well. i’m never a fan of reducing a character down to a ship, attributing their development to a single romantic relation, saying they’re “so in love” when they’re literally really not. and look, gifset edits for your fave ship are cute af, i get it. it’s fun to speculate how your ship’s characters are going to feel when they see each other again. 

but i get asks about ‘don’t you think len would have died for sara as well as mick?’ and my answer is… literally no. i don’t. i don’t think that’s how they saw each other, or how deep they felt about each other. and given that the producers have literally said sara has basically moved on, posts making her arc this season about len, or about how him coming back is going to affect her, just make me sigh. but i’m a canon-compliant asshole with my meta even with shipper goggles on, most of the time.

and i’ve seen a lot of those shippers try to reduce len’s relationships with lisa, mick, and other characters (including, yes, barry, who was important to his arc preceding legends) to being lesser than his friendship with sara. that’s so discomfiting to me. and it’s even more discomfiting to me how they reduce all of sara’s best emotional moments to being about len? her overcoming the order to kill martin was aided by len but not about him. her decision to talk to mick in the brig and that awesome conversation and the emotional insight she had? i’m tired of seeing people make that about her feelings about len. that was a great moment for her. she has so many great moments like that. so many great relationships i wish the fandom would explore more, rather than focusing on just a single romance.

and… look, i’m a person who prefers things when they don’t go canon half the time. my canon vs. non-canon ships are radically different. i love WA in the flash and wanted it to be canon and it is, but i love CF just as much and would never want it to be canon. with CC, the ways i would’ve wanted it to be canon never happened, and the ways it’s romanticized and populized in the fandom tend to rub me the wrong way maybe because of that. 

So… long answer there. but it’s really honest. i don’t hate CC, and i do respect the fandom and genuinely wish them all the best. these generalizations, as with any generalization, are obviously not going to apply to every shipper or every fic or every meta. but they’re trends i’ve personally encountered and opinions i’ve either seen in the tags or had to interact with and eventually, it slowly turned me off the ship as a major romantic pairing.
