I don't know if you're going to answer this but, Vigilante Tiso, is this an AU of yours? If so, I'm curious about the context of this concept!

Yep! Vigilante Tiso is one of my older and blog popular AU’s for Hollow Knight (based on poll results)

Originally, it started as a joke about Tiso being in Hallownest early just to take the piss out of PK and Lurien, but slowly developed into a more complicated story about Tiso being Xero and Markoth’s son (Xero biologically and Markoth via marrying into the family) as Tiso moved to Hallownest much earlier - eventually putting his distaste for the royalty into become the cities Vigilante that continued through the Infection Outbreak and in-game events. Instead of an arrogant ant that dies in the Colosseum, he’s a hot headed ant that’s been trying to protect survivors of a dying kingdom whilst wanting a solution and is willing to die for it.

A lot of it focuses more on the character relationships as they change and are affected by the story events - particularly with a small family being torn apart as simple mortals in a gods war.

Gutcanon: it’s not that I actively want this to be the case – it just unaccountably feels like it should be

Despite all that I post, I do actually think Lurien and The Pale king were very close. I think, objectively, based on just the in game evidence, the interpretation of Lurien being highly devoted to the King has the most merit out of the headcanon mosh pit that follows him. I'm not sure I would count Palewatcher as part of the in game evidence, but I do think that they were very, very close and Lurien was extremely devoted to him. Even my Lurien was once like that, and tbh I think even in my lurimol au Palewatcher was semi a thing. I don't think it would have been a real relationship between them, but I do think that it could have been a warped platonic-romantic on-off thing of two of the most scholarly recluses of Hallownest who found solace in finding another like them. That's part of the tragedy of my AU, with how close Lurien (and Hegemol both) were to the King, and all that happened after.

Heartcanon: I don’t have a particular rationale for why this ought to be the case, I just like to imagine it’s true because it gives me the warm fuzzies

Ohh, this one took me the most to think on because the thing I wanted to say is something I felt like I had said before but actually didn't? So now you can get the Thimble lore :) Thimble actually got his name rather late in life. He's from an extremely war-ravaged village that frequently gets raided, destroyed, burned, and suffers from various illness when it spreads since they have no reliable doctor or way to get supplies. It was commonplace for bugs who managed to even conceive in these times to not fully name their children until they were well into their years, as a way to aid the mourning process when many did not make it. Thimble's mother was a seamstress, and he loved helping her make clothing for the bugs of their village. She gifted him his own sewing kit when she gave him his name around the age of six, her dear little Thimble. He still has it, his one and only prized possession, extremely well-worn but still with his mother's embroidery of his name on the front.

Ogrim: he’s the General. Unlike his canon counterpart he’s a golden scarab instead of a dung beetle, he has an appetite for flesh and likes to poke and taunt GK when he can. Despite hating it GK regards him as the closest thing to a friend he has.

GK: His name is Ramses(this may be important later idk, it also might change. I headcanon that canon PK is named Ozymandias, so I wanted to stick with the Egyptian theme and them being the same person yet different.

Lurien: Stills wears blue, still paints. He also mixes poisons in his spare time. This is based on Blue morpho butterflies being super toxic irl.

Herrah: No one has heard from deepnest since the war began, though an offspring was still bargained for.

Monomon: She discovered something far below the kingdom, it has been changing her. Recently the archives made an overture to Unn and the two talked, GK can’t get her to cough up what she learned from Unn. The archives in this AU aren’t actually part of Binary!Hallownest(name pending) and thus aren’t truly beholden to GK.

Bardoon: He’s arrived in kingdoms edge(he’s my fav character he’s not really relevant but y’all needed to know he’s doing okay).

Ive got to ask it… how normalized is godf*cking in your HK universe? Like is it “only a fool would stick it in Higher Being” or “I’m a member of an ahem very special priesthood” or “ah yes, the annual all-in divine orgy, makes the crops real productive.” I personally think it would depend on individual god and devout culture, but on the other hand I can see sweeping species-wide taboos.

Oooh, that's a cool thought to chew on! But I think I align with you in that it varies both in the preferences of the individual god as well as how their aspect can relate that sexual desire into worship. A war god, for example, likely would not gather much tithe from sex, and instead gain more benefit from ritualized fighting behaviors present in the courtship of their favored tribe, while a god of bounty or fertility (like WL) would probably gain a great deal of worship from sex, no matter the format. Whether or not the god needs to be physically present, spiritually present, or not at all also varies (sometimes posessing a host to fuck their devout is the only option), but overall I don't think that it's the strangest thing out there. It might be to some civilizations, but to Higher Beings pretty much any form of worship is good- some is just better than the other. And some Higher Beings (like Grimm) don't gather much tithe from sex in any form, they're just kinky and want to fool around.

Individual culture and species quirks would also probably mess with the rites and how they are presented. For example, the reason why I write Lurien with so much guilt over pining for PK is because he was raised in a beetle-based society, where monogamy is common and mate guarding is fierce. He didn't know that PK and WL do not care about him joining the fun, or that many gods outside of Hallownest keep their beds warm with their favorite priests, because the culture that he was raised in was one that made sex a more private, coveted thing, with tributes to WL being something done in the privacy of homes. If PK had become the god of a species that engages in group-living or scramble promiscuity, where everyone mates with anyone, then that perception would be very different. How the culture was before the god became popular influences how the mortals worship, which the Higher Beings are fine with as long as they get their dosh. WL, for example, is just as okay with a priestess to her being tied down and fucked by multiple people in public as she is by a private couple whispering prayers as they try to conceive their first clutch. Both involve lots of enthusiastic sex. Both suit her just fine. That would not work for PK, however, as he is the god of Mind and Soul rather than Life and Fertility, and the first would not work in the Beetle Tribe's society (though it might for others)

(PK also doesn't gain as much tithe from fucking Lurien as WL does when fucking him- or, well, anybody else. Subserviance and loyalty being given willingly and freely is more of what he feeds off of, it's just that sex is a very good way of gaining a big dose of that all at once.)

hey let me hear about hollow knight !! tell me the lore of those funky looking creatures!!!

gmornin! lordy, okay, hollow knight lore is. where do i even start….

so, the basic gist is that youre this little guy, in a dead kingdom, fighting basically all of the citizens, who have been infected by this disease that makes them violent. like, the kingdom is super long dead, and youve come at about the same time as a lot of other new people: quirrel, tiso, zote, uh. it cannot be just those three. NO wait okay there’s also cornifer and iselda, theyre married.

anyway, so nearly everyone is infected. you fight them all. and. okay, so theres this temple, up at the beginning of the game? and it has three masks on it and you have to go get the masks, because the masks are keys.

thats the basics. lets get into. like. stuff evan isnt allowed to see bc evan is playing blind

so the masks are attached to people, right. three famous guys that the old king told to go into a coma and then, if they ever woke up, their key would be broken.

the three people are monomon the teacher, herrah the beast, and lurien the watcher.

monomon is protected by a big jellyfish. uumuu. <- love this guy. quirrel helps u defeat it.

herrah is protected by her whole home. deepnest is. not for the faint of heart. if you dont like bugs dont play it with sound on.

btw if you kill her at the right time, hornet, who is one of the first main bosses, will be waiting outside to be like “yeah she was my mother. kind of screwed up that she died but… tbh i didnt really know her. but you get that i’m allowed to mourn her anyway”

hornet is your, the player’s, half sister 👍 her mom is herrah and your mom is this tree?? and your dad is the king

anyway so then there’s lurien and its so. waugh. you KNOW hes the most favoured by the king because he has 13 knights to defend him??? you dont have to fight all thirteen but you do have to fight, like, five. but yeah, lurien was like.. the mayor of the main part of hallownest, the kingdom. herrah was from a completely different and smaller kingdom, where she was queen, and monomon was like. her own little spot. she just had the archives

anyway, why dont we talk about the pale king. so the pale king is the dad guy. he’s a god, by the way. and basically he’s fighting this little war with the god of dreams, her name is the radiance, so she decides to screw up ALL of his people and give them all a disease if they dream. and everyone dreams/has a dream so she got like. everyone, right?

and the king was like NO okay we have to stop this. so we’re going to make a jail. and then a SECOND jail, for that jail.

the first jail was his kid. you are also his kid. not the same kid though. okay so basically he had a bunch of kids. like SO many kids. with his wife. who is also a god. and then pumped the kids’ eggs full of void, WHICH IS ANOTHER GOD. so the kids 1 1/2 god. which is difficult to do. anyway

look up birthplace cutscene and grab the longest video or the first one that shows up to see how many kids is a lot of kids.

anyway, so he fills the kids with void so that they dont think or feel or dream, but he messed up because his test was if any of them could get up to him [they are all in a pit] he would bring them along and they would be the knight. the jail. but if they managed to get all the way up????? they had a want to get up there. so that was his like. 1000nth mistake.

so both you the player and this other one got to the top, but only the other one got OUT.

so they shoved the radiance into the knight, and then locked them up and then closed the door and shoved masks on the door.

okay so i have to go do stuff now but like. you have to go kill your dad [hes already mostly dead] in his dream to steal 1: his throne and 2: half of this charm, and then go to your mom and bother her until she gives you the other half, and then go into the abyss and do the cutscene, and then you get the shadesoul <- i think? shade soul or shade heart. whatever

and THEN you can go fight the hollow knight and you have the ability to unlock the secret boss because hornet will rush in and stop the hollow knight and you can dream nail them and then you get to fight the RADIANCE who has SWORDS and LAZERS and it SUCKS. <- its kind of fun i am just sosososo bad at it. anyway

to be clear you can beat hollow knight without having to do all this stuff but if you wanna fight the radiance. white palace. buzzsaws….. <- pretend they are quaking in their boots but like not actually because they love white palace tbh

i had a fun time discussing ideas for a dumb hollow knight content-creator au (where everything is also fine)

1. radiance was a big shot before the pale king arrived and stole all her followers bc he did basically the same content as her, just a bit better. eventually radiance started an ARG about someone controlling the whole world with a hivemind and got pale king in it and they’re very much besties with a small rival arc :D

2. lost kin used to do normal content like gardening and walking/hiking around until in one video it ended abruptly and they never uploaded again, implying that they died somehow. then some 400 years later they begin making content again where they wander and had a COMPLETE 180-degree turn on their content. it’s now all trolling and arson until like one day they went back to normal content for... some unknown reason

3. grimm’s the super enigmatic vlogger with the super hot voice and every one keeps wondering what he looks like and there’s some thirsty fancams and edits about him (mostly made by godseeker)

4. speaking of godseeker, she posts fancams of like... literally everyone and she’s probably into astrology, and her texts are always in a slightly elegant form like “greetings, may i interest you in [thing]?”

5. pure vessel doesn’t talk while they’re streaming, and you only see an arm playing and a bunch of plushies on their table :D also they’re EERILY good at this, and sometimes hornet comes in their room since they live together with the siblings 

6. little ghost REFUSES. ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to play anything other than platformers when they’re streaming. everytime a follower donates and asks them to play something that isn’t a platformer, they begin tapping on the table. it’s morse code that says “fuck off”. they have made small exceptions though, like when they played dark souls and bloodborne and were eerily good at it

7. myla and bretta do little animation memes and they sometimes collaborate together :D

8. the collector has an onlyfans where he shows off his shiny pokemon collection. he also streams gacha games and does NOTHING but whale on them. and... rarely, he goes bug catching

9. quirrel has a wide blanket of content, sometimes he’s walking around, sometimes he’s blowing toilets up with monomon, and sometimes he just gives out worthless information in 30-second videos

10. it’s a given but sheo does drawing streams, mato posts videos about, well... swordsmanship... and i like to think that oro’s a commentary person who like. drops the bluntest jokes and yet still manages to get his very based point across

11. sly’s one of those internet legends who gives like genuinely useful advice about money and scams and all that other stuff but his upload schedule resembles that of a hermit’s

12. the nailmasters have a minecraft smp series where mato and oro are planning to go to war, sheo’s just doing whatever and sly hasn’t appeared on the server in years

13. dung defender does like commentary and stuff where it’s super happy and he’s just a very positive content creator in general :D

14. lurien posts fancams on alt and does tea commentary on main. sometimes he slips up and posts a fancam on main. but the fucking amazing part is that no one knows who his alt is LMAO

Lurien and Herrah taking Hornet and Hollow and being a family unit? Fuck yes!

(Even outside of this au) For some reason i feel like they have such untapped potential of being actually good parents, mainly to Hornet. Like, for example Lurien being the one she goes to hide to when in the White Palace and skipping tutoring. Lurien enabling that but also tricking Hornet into learning anyway through games.

Here's a secret, anon: roughly half to 75% of the reason why I ship PK and Lurien (and, well, WL/PK/Lurien) is specifically so that Lurien gets tied into this sort of awkward little family unit with Hollow, Hornet, and Herrah. As cute as they are together, I really like thinking about what sort of effects romantic relationships would have on the character's lives as well, and the thing with Lurien pairing up with PK in an AU where the vessel plan never came to fruition (or was violently disrupted before the Sealing, like in the Desert Runaways AU) is that he then becomes a sort of extra dad figure to Hollow and Hornet. I've already shown why he's a good match to Hollow in that regard in Until Dawn Shall Break, but I also love taking it further, like removing PK from the picture entirely so that both he and Hollow have to mourn him, and he slowly shows Hollow how to deal with such grief and loss of purpose. He's acutely focused, good on picking up small cues/details, familiar with anxiety and depression, and all of his problems stem from him being socially isolated from people instead of deep overwhelming trauma like Hollow, so him taking up that mentor figure for them is just *chef kiss*

Of course, I'm very biased in that reguard, because the one fic that got me to actually like/think about Lurien is A Watcher's Duty by Nym_Pseudo on Ao3 (I think that's their Ao3, anyways? Running off memory here!), and one of my fav troupes is 'guy who has zero experience or qualifications with children ends up with a child and then tries his best to be a good role model', but I really like the idea of Lurien being forcefully dragged into a family + friend group via the Dreamers and courting PK. First off, because he's such a mysterious powerful figure in the City of Tears, so him being taken out of his comfort zone to be put with a spider queen who gives no fucks and a jellyfish scientist who's alien af is funny already, but then throw in him learning how to be a part of the extended family group that he's been craving for so long, and it's just heartwarming. ESPECIALLY since I hc him to have once wanted to get married and have children with some other man, but he gave up that dream when he chose to be Watcher, and now lo and behold!! Unforeseen circumstances have landed him both his first actual friends in like...nearly his whole life, a god-mate, and now two kids. Surprise!

TDLR: Lurien is a character who strikes me as being a softie at heart, and him being forced to abandon his duty to care for a child who doesn't know why she had to run away from her home and a barely-not-a-child who's having a silent mental breakdown over their continued existence and loss of purpose while their parents fight to the death in the kingdom they were born to die for is really good. Especially when paired with Herrah, whose grim 'take no shits' attitude is now entirely a front she puts on for her children, instead of showing the terror that she feels for her tribe back home, and the guilt of bringing them into this whole mess. ESPECIALLY especially when they also are cast out into the wastelands with very little supplies, and have to build a little shelter to sustain themselves in while they lay low, wait for the god-war to blow over, and try to find other survivors in the mess WITHOUT alerting any other gods to their vulnerability

5. Best personality trait

Hegemol's best personality trait... Is probably his patience and willingness to listen. Old knight has lived five lifetimes over at this point, and he's seen and been through a lot, but that doesn't mean that others have not. With his extended lifespan has come a far more relaxed sense of time, where he knows it's alright to sit and hear someone out. And with his age, he's learned that many times, the best option is simply to let someone actually experience their emotions than try and fix them instantly. He lets people be ugly, and gross sob on him, and throw things, and break things, and be angry with him if they need to be. He has all the time in the world to help fix the problem. Best to let the catharsis through first.

6. Worst personality trait

Hand in hand with above, Hegemol's extreme sense of protectiveness can get in the way of things. Especially when it comes to his squires. He can occasionally get so overprotective that he will pre-emptively try to protect them and do what he fully believes would be in their best interest. But sometimes, that turns out to be wrong. I guess to add on to above, he is also very, very genuine about admitting when he is wrong, and working with the person that he's wronged on their terms.

30. Sleeping habits

Lol. Lmao. What sleep? In all seriousness, poor Hegemol is never well rested, especially not while he served as a knight. He's late to bed in order to spend a precious few hours with his nocturnal husband, and very early to rise for his duties. Hegemol lives off of midday naps at any moment he can take them, partially because he seeks them, and partially because if he doesn't take them he will keel over. He has absolutely passed out on more than one occasion in the war room or otherwise. Hegemol overloads and overcommits himself on his duties, especially near the fall of Hallownest, as everyone else is also already doing so much. He would much prefer to make himself the sacrificial lamb than see his other knights weary with fatigue as he is on the inside. I actually answered an ask a while ago that details Lurien and Hegemol's schedules, if you're interested :> In current time of the fanfiction though, while he's in Mato's care? He loves to sleep. He doesn't quite have as much choice given how much he has to recover, but as long as he isn't plagued by nightmares (which is often)... He is so cozy in the nest Mato has made him, and he never wants to leave it.

44. Their happiest memory

This one is HARD! Chivalry Hegemol is an EXTREMELY sentimental sap of a man, it's very, very hard for him to choose just one. The first one to come to mind, however, would have been him and Lurien's 'wedding.' They had no ceremony of course, given the secretive nature of their relationship- but Hegemol spent months learning the Damselfly courtship dances and rituals in a way that he, a beetle, could perform them. He did this mostly alone, but with the occasional assistance of Aedmond, my Lurien's butler. On a night where the Pale King had left the palace on a diplomatic excursion, the two of them snuck into the emptied royal ballroom, and danced. This was their wedding. They could have no rings, or trinkets of each other, or audience - but this was their night, with Aedmond providing music through the stage piano as quietly as he possibly could. Hegemol definitely didn't tear up through most of it. The second memory that comes to mind would have been the knighting of his first squire, Sir Gytha. Gytha was a very troubled young beetle, and her journey to knighthood took almost twice as long as any other squire he's taken since. But she is where much of his patience and willingness to let others actually feel out their emotions comes from; she is the foundation. Hegemol himself didn't have that great of a time with his time as squire. In fact, his knight, Dame Ludovic, actually messed him up immensely in terms of self worth, self esteem, and sense of purpose. To Hegemol, Gytha's training was certainly his messiest -- but it also served to put his foot down and stamp it in Ludovic's face, that her legacy died with him. He refused to continue her cycle, and he and Gytha both are far better off for it. And yes, he also bawled under his mask at Gytha's knighting ceremony. He could barely deliver her oaths to her because he was trying not to be choked up.

There are many worlds, many possibilities. One must simply open their mind's eye to them. Look! See this world, where two silent troupe members wearing the masks of comedy and tragedy dance while the kingdom of Hallownest burns, while the king gnashes his teeth and moans. Silk is tightening around his neck. The lady Root exiled herself and lives though for how long, who can know? Perhaps Herrah and Monomon will have better luck here than the Pale King in dealing with the infection raging.

Look over here! There is an agreement made, barter agreed upon. The egg that will become the Gendered Child awaits the world that will not be kind to her. But the king ventures down below to check on his own sacrificed ones. He goes alone, an arrogant but also mournful presence. And he disappears! Oh my. Hallownest dissolves into internal chaos and the White Queen barely rules the Ancient Basin.
