A simple warding charm for my front door
Tumblr media
After listening to @breelandwalker's podcast episode about home warding, I wanted to try out an idea I've had for a while about a warding charm for my front door using stinging nettle. Warding my whole house isn't something I have the energy for right now, but I enjoyed working this little spell to give myself a little peace of mind. Please listen to the episode if you haven't (Hex Positive, Ep. 024 - Warding A Witchy Home) because she goes into detail about what home wards can and can't do, how to work them, etc. All very good information!
Also please note that I don't have a lot of experience and I haven't tested this spell before, but I wanted to share it anyway and in the future I'll update the post with any insights or experiences that might come up.
For this spell I used: - a small drawstring bag (mine was crocheted by my grandmother some years ago) - dried stinging nettle - one clove of garlic
I started by gathering my materials, then centered and grounded myself. I cleansed the immediate space around me as well as the bag (lately I've enjoyed burning dried juniper for this purpose), then took a pinch of the dried nettles and held it in my hands, asking the plant to please assist me in protecting my home from anything or anyone seeking to cause harm, while allowing friends and family and anyone else who we invite or welcome to our house safe passage through the front door. I visualized a powerful patch of tall nettles growing in front of my house, around the door, and wrapping around the door handle. I also visualized any person or entity seeking to cause harm feeling prickles and itching upon approaching the house or touching the door handle, and them retreating from the house. Then I imagined the nettles drawing back and allowing friends and family to come to the door safely. I charged the nettles with this intention and placed them in the bag.
I did much the same thing with the garlic but the visualization that came to me was more like a glowing golden light encompassing the door. Then I also put the garlic into the bag, closed the bag, and held it in my hands while charging it with my intention more strongly, holding gratitude for the plants for assisting me in the working. I then hung the bag on a nail above my front door (on the inside), placed my hands on the door, and visualized the nettle patch and golden light one more time. To my surprise the imagined nettles kind of decided by themselves to grow all around my house and garden, even around my garden shed, though I didn't specifically ask them to, which to me was a lovely sign that the nettle spirit was eager to help me. These days I usually close my spells by saying "make it so" because I'm obsessed with Star Trek, then I reversed my grounding and centering.
Please let me know if you try it out! I haven't worked with nettles much in my magic so far, but I can't wait to get to know them more intimately as summer rolls around.

I’m back with more European folk magic! This time we’re diving into Italian folk magic practices. This isn’t a comprehensive look at Italian magic (though if you’re interested in an overview I’d be happy to write one) rather it’s a close look at a particular protective charm from southern Italy. It’s a simple, yet effective charm with a long history. Everything is thoroughly researched through academic sources in anthropology, folklore, and first hand accounts. You can either click the link or read this post, either way I hope this is meaningful and educational for you🌛🌝🌜
Brevi: an Italian folk magic charm against the evil eye and how to make your own
Like many Mediterraneans, Italians are greatly concerned with the potential to be afflicted with the evil eye. Many of the folk magic practices performed by jana and benedettihealers are intended to divine the cause of the malocchio and rid it from those who come to them. Their craft has been passed down for generations and their services are highly respected. Like with other folk magic healers, most jana and benedetti do not consider themselves witches, instead they see themselves as “having the sign”, people chosen by god to help others. Clients come to them for a variety of needs both physical and spiritual. These healers perform divination rituals, locate lost objects, make love charms, and more — though mostly, they remedy the malocchio.
Remedies range from complex, lengthy multi-step rituals, to simple prayers and gestures. Whatever means a cunning person uses varies from region to region, though in Basilicata/ Lucania where my family comes from, the evil eye is typically cured and prevented with brevi. These are small black cloth pouches filled with various sacred herbs, protective amulets and stones, objects made of iron, images of saints, and Palm Sunday ashes. These bags are worn close to the skin, either around the neck, tucked into a bra, or in a wallet. Contact with the skin is considered to be an important part of this protective charm, depending on the region and advice of the healer. Though brevi are typically prepared and empowered by the prayers of the healer, it is not uncommon for mothers to make them for their children.
What goes into the brevi bag is highly subjective and personal, though there are commonalities in their contents from state to state. Medals of the Madonna, a small cross or charm, and rosemary are common in most places. There are more specific additions such as the cimaruta, the cornicello, the mano cornuta and mano fica, or pieces of coral. The cimaruta is a popular Neopolitan talisman typically worn around the neck or hung above an infant’s bed. Made of silver, the cimaruta is meant to resemble a sprig of rue, one of the most sacred herbs. Each of the 3 rue branches blossom into protective magical symbols. These include, but are not limited to: a crescent moon, the sun, a heart shaped key, a sacred heart, a fish, or a rooster.
Tumblr media
Charm available: on Etsy White Peach Cottage.
[Image description: A typical silver cimaruta charm. Made to resemble a sprig of rue, the branches end in protective symbols. This particular pendant features a cross, a crescent moon, a sacred heart, and a rooster.]
Along with medals of saints, the cornicello, mano cornuta and mano fica can be added to brevi bags. The corno is a popular Southern Italian amulet, symbolic of a ram or bull’s horn. It signifies virility and strength, projecting a masculine energy. These charms are typically made of silver, gold, or coral, all are considered significant sacred materials. The red coral is reminiscent of blood and vitality, bringing luck to the wearer and silver has long been used as a protective measure against evil spirits. The cornicello is typically worn by men. Mano charms have ancient origins — dating back to the Etruscans. Mano fica, the fig hand, is associated with femininity and is thought to have the power to oppose the evil eye. The mano cornuta, the horned hand, has similar roots and meanings to the cornicello, and if done as a physical gesture, it can reflect the malocchio back to whoever cast it.
In addition to the medals, several sacred herbs are utilized. Many of the herbs are associated with Saint John or the Virgin Mary, though if you are a secular witch like me or worship pagan pantheons, you can forgo the Catholic aspects of this charm. Many of the herbs have ancient associations dating back to the classical Roman period, making their meanings highly adaptable. The Romans associated various herbs with Diana (Artemis), Juno (Hera), and Phoebus (Apollo). So it is not difficult to transcribe the correspondences.
The primary herb used in brevi bags is rue. Rue is sometimes referred to as “the herb of grace” and has long been used in blessing water and exorcisms. Rosemary protects against negativity and is used in cleansing rituals. Roses symbolize the divine love of the Madonna and evoke healing energies. Lavender has a long history in Italy of being a prophylactic against evil, with evidence dating back to ancient Rome. Mugwort is associated with witchcraft and magic, mostly in connection with Artemis/ Diana and the moon. Some brevi contain chili pepper seeds — the fruit itself resembles the cornicello, carrying a similar meaning. The seeds are associated with protecting and warding.
Once the charms and herbs are chosen and brevi are assembled, cunning folk recite prayers and bless the charm. They recite common Catholic prayers 3 times and typically perform these blessings on holy days and Saint feasts such as notte di san Giovanni — St. John’s eve, and Christmas eve. St. John’s eve takes place around the same time as the summer solstice and the celebrations across Europe still have elements that resemble pagan celebrations such as the Roman Vestalia festival. Some healers do not pray over the bag, rather they recite poetry that evokes their intent. The process of making brevi is highly personalized to each healer and region.
Tumblr media
[Image description: author’s personal brevi elements. They include a black sachet, rosemary, mugwort, rose petals, lavender, red clover, obsidian and a white gold cornicello.]
I have adopted and adapted making and carrying a brevi bag into my own practice. It gives me a sense of deeper connection with my ancestors, especially since brevi are a popular folk remedy in the region we come from. In my own brevi rituals I include herbs that are personally meaningful to me with magical correspondences that resonate with my intent. I typically use rosemary, mugwort, rose petals, lavender, and local red clover. Harvesting and foraging some of the herbs brings me closer to nature and makes the bag that much more meaningful. I also include a shard of obsidian which is a powerful warding stone. I like to think its reflective nature is aiming the evil eye back to whoever or whatever is aiming negative intent towards me. I put a family heirloom in my bag as well —  my great grandfather’s cornicello, passed down from my father to me. It gives me a sense that my ancestors are protecting me. I write my own personal incantations for my brevi, typically poems or prayers to nature spirits. Finally, I charge it every full moon, imbuing it with magical energy and replace the herbs every so often to keep its power.
Crafting charms and spells can be highly personal and meaningful. Creating your own brevi bag can invite in positive energies, bolster spiritual defenses, and connect you to a long history of spiritual healing. Brevi bags are a low effort, simple way of practicing magic, making them highly accessible. I hope you found this interesting and perhaps you’ll choose to incorporate brevi bags into your magical workings.

Black salt / witches' salt
WARNING: do NOT mix it up with the edible black salt for kitchen use. They are both called “black salt” but one is salt with activated charcoal or salt from a volcanic area that can be used in cooking, the other is a mix of salt, ashes, and other non-edible things used as a protection or banishing spell. I personally use it as a halfway between warding/protection and banishing as I add things usually associated with banishing.
I tried to search up the origin of the “witches’ salt” but I didn’t find anything solid (but also I made only a couple of quick searches on google because I was crunching time as I did this either before/after work or sometimes during slow moments at work) so, my best guess would be that its origin might be derived from the use of salt in many folkloric traditions as a protection or to purify, mixed a bit with a concept similar to the "witches' bottle", but I digress.
Disclaimer again: I wrote most of this during work time and edited it afterwards so I can't guarantee the form and grammar used.
I first made black salt after a couple of quick searches for protection and banishing spells that could help me in my practice, as I first started I was a bit of an idiot (to quote Set) and didn't keep anything to protect myself around when doing divination and other things.
With time I noticed that it's a good all-around protection and also, with a couple of tweaks, could be perfect to also banish in a "bounce back to sender" way.
There are different recipes on the Internet and among witchy communities but they mostly differ for some ingredients added (or not added) and I believe all would work… but surely, IMHO, if you tailor them to your needs it would be more effective.
This is what I made for myself, and I'll also include the "return to sender" version.
Tools you’ll need:
a jar with a lid to store it
mortar & pestle (not mandatory: I don’t have one so I use a tiny ceramic casserole and one of those wooden pestles for cocktails bc that’s what I had at home… use whatever could do the job)
a candle in the colour you associate with protection and warding
Ingredients:
salt (duh-)
ashes (either incense ashes, firepit ashes/charcoal, soot or you could also use activated charcoal)
eggshells powder
black pepper
rosemary
bay leaves
sage (kitchen kind is perfect!)
whatever herb you associate with protection
Process:
Honestly, you should do this however it feels right for you. You could cast a circle, call the elements or whatever. I don’t do that because it’s not part of my practice. You don’t even need to cleanse or anything if you don’t feel it’s necessary: it’ll work anyway.
Light the candle (ofc if you think it’s needed) and put the ingredients in the mortar, a little bit at a time, to grind them a bit and most importantly mix all of them. Focus on your intention, if you feel you need to recite something to enchant it then do it. Mix all the ingredients, I usually start with salt, add eggshell powder, all the other ingredients and then another bit of salt at the end to “close” everything.
If you want to give it a little “boost” you could write on a bay leaf “I am protected” or the like and then burn it (do it in a fireproof container! bay leaves are nasty burners and like to pop a lot!) to “activate” it and mix it to the rest of the ingredients.
When everything is all mixed, then you can pour it into the jar and close it. It’s up to you if you want to seal the lid with some wax or not. I do not do it because if I decide to redo it I can open it and clean the jar more easily before preparing the new black salt.
Again, it’s up to you if you want to charge it under the moonlight/sunlight or in some other way: do what you feel that's right to do.
And that’s it! Congrats you made black salt that will protect your space!
For the return-to-sender version:
add more pepper
slap also some paprika or better some chilli pepper powder
also put there some garlic
you can add other ingredients you associate with banishing
add a bay leaf (or also a piece of paper) with the intention written on it like “the harm/malicious intent is returned to who cast it” or whatever you feel right
complete!

🌿Spellwork: Healing from illness
Healing spells are not intended to be used instead of traditional and conventional methods of healing, but they are meant to work in conjunction with them. To enhance and reinforce the healing proces. Usually meant to be used once other forms of healing have been exhausted.
Healing spells tend to be broader too, and some may prefer them for the more spiritual or magical causes of illness (hexes and curses of the likes).
This spells focuses on the physical health rather than the spiritual, and is good to aid in healing from fevers and sickness.
Tumblr media
This spell is cast by one person on another’s behalf.
You’ll need:
Stinging Nettle
Rope
Scissors
Gloves
Matches / Lighter
Collect fresh stinging nettles to make bundles with. Handle carefully with gloves on, as the leaves and stems have small needle like hairs that, when in contact with your skin, causes your skin to itch and sting. Once collected simply bundle them up into cleansing sticks with the rope you cut out, you may use red rope, as red is a healing colour.
Set the nettle ablaze, blowing the fire away so that you are left with smoke coming from it, waft it around the infected person all around the body, letting the smoke hit them. Once the whole body has been covered from the smoke, you may burn the whole nettle bundle you used.
.* . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . *.
Why use stinging nettle?
Stinging nettle is used for healing as well as protection and warding, especially keeping spirits at bay, reverse hexes, and exorcism. But most importantly it is used for healing in this context, the smoke from the nettle will waft over the infected person and heal them. The nettle is also used to absorb the infection that person has into it, therefor, we burn the whole nettle afterwards rather than keep it, to burn the infection away.

burning a black candle for protection as the veil between worlds begins to thin | crackling fire 3hrs
the world beyond and the world beyond your walls have each their own demands on your time and your energies.but within this world that you've created, within your home, you are safe. you are protected.
you have worked hard to create this island of peace, and it takes time and energy to maintain it. you sit down now, as the night grows longer and the veil between worlds begins to thin, and you redraw your boundaries, shoring up your defenses against the outside.
your breath comes strong and sure in your chest. your gaze focuses on the flame of the candle, honing your intention.
you have been safe here. you are safe here, now. you will be safe here, still.
you feel the knock that comes now more than you hear it. but whatever’s on the other side, you’re ready for it.

My favorite simple wards to guard the home
Hanging rosemary above the doorstep, and/or above doors of the house for protection.
Sprinkling a line of dried red pepper on a windowsill, to counter a curse.
Placing a mix of dried & ground eggshells and black pepper in every corner of a room to keep out unwanted spirits.
Placing a decoration representing a witch in the kitchen, to keep away illness and to favor health.
Crafting an effigie (no matter how crude!) and make it into the guardian of your home by charging it with your intent of protection and placing it near the front door.
Crafting small witch ladders to hang around the house.

Note
You don't understand-
I NEED fae!Price. I will commit war crimes for fae price. I thought I was down bad for Fae!König or fae!Ghost, but oml fae!price?
Pleasepleaseplease
Price, Christ even just thinking his name makes you nervous, hasn't been hanging around your garden gate recently. You wonder what happened. You suppose it's for the best. He must have gotten tired of trying to get his hooks in you, determined that you were more than willing to go to extremes to keep yourself untethered.
Your thumb rubs against the handle of your watering can, staring at the garden gate. You shouldn't have kissed him. The feeling of his lips lingers in your mind, follows your daydreams in a way you think might be dangerous. Missing people is dangerous, makes magic finicky to have too many loose desires. It was just nice having someone to talk to, you tell yourself.
You crouch next to your Queen Anne's lace, snapping a few bundles off. The patch of sorrel you've been nursing is coming in well, the soft green hearts pluck nicely under your fingers. You chew on the sour leaves while you weed. Although weeding in a witches garden is really more about curating the weeds you want in the places you want them than taking them out. The dandelions and violets are just as important to you as the roses. Well, you dig your spade into a particularly determined dandelion root, maybe not as important. At least the roses stayed where they were supposed to.
You glance towards the garden gate again, out of habit not longing. It's not that you're lonely, witches don't get lonely, it's just that it's quiet. You'll make some tea, boil down the fresh dandelion root and try to get a decent vision out of it. No that won’t help, you’re all out of sorts, your intent could wander all over the place.
You'll throw up some extra wards. That will settle you. You twist a few stems of lavender and braid them together, wandering to your garden gate for a sprig of rosemary to lock in the center. You hum as you work, and snip a length of string from your pocket to tie the bundle to the ivy blanketing the iron gate.
You pause, staring at the neat iridescent pair of dragonfly wings sitting on the wall where Price usually is. You hesitate. It's him. You know he must have left them there for you. Not a gift, but also not not a gift. Like finding a soft piece of quartz among gravel. It's not stealing, he's left it there for you to take or not. You bite your lip, worrying the skin between your teeth, and pluck them off the wall. If he mentions them, you'll give them back.
You finish tying your ward and go back inside. You should prep some more wards, maybe an actual spell or two to cover the house now that you seem to have a regular -and very dangerous- visitor.

How to cleanse your house for manifestation, and "clear your door ways" of negative shit
Clean your front door. I am not joking, clean the fucking door. Especially if you have VISIBLE grime on it, clean it physically. Take your multi-surface cleaner, spray it to fuck, then wipe it down with paper towels until everything is gone. And then, take a prepared wash (spiritual wash of whatever sort you feel necessary, could even be a multi-action bath for cleansing and protection as well as prosperity if you do it right) and re-wash the door with this mix. If you don't have visible grime on your door, you can skip the multi-surface cleaner and go straight to the spiritual wash
Once a month at least, especially for warding work or for road opening work (would not try to make it for both, if you do road opening have a separate ward set up at the door)
Easy Warding recipe
-baking soda
-bay leaves
-peppermint
-basil
-ashes of psalm 23 (or another if you have a preference, or a petition written for the protection of the home)
Wash the door, then throw the remaining liquid at the door and let it air dry
Easy Prosperity recipe
-cinnamon
-clove
-nutmeg
-ginger
-bay leaf
-holy water (optional, but adds an extra kick)
-coins (will be strained out and given as offerings at a crossroads after the wash is made)
-petition for prosperity and abundance burned (also psalm 23, and Mathew: 7:7-8)
Wash the door while petitioning for prosperity, for money to always be flowing in, and for blessings in general to always be flowing in. After entire door is washed, throw remaining liquid on door and allow to air dry. Take the coins and go to the nearest crossroads and drop them on the corner (if you live in an apartment complex, the entrance to the complex is the best place. Not the nearest gate, the ENTRANCE. My nearest gate is exit only, and you want abundance flowing IN)
Anyway, hmu if you want a reading, or if you'd like a specific work done! Info is in the pinned post on my page, lmk if you're interested!

God Liam Wilhelmina my beloved. Losing his best and only friend because he dared to try and save the man who stood between him and a crazed paladin. Kneeling in the tiny crawlspace of a rope trick and failing to treat the poison that killed the crown princess, the first person to ever include him in anything. Hiding there with her corpse until the assassins left, stowing her away in a cupboard to try and preserve what little sanctity was left. Her skin cool to the touch like Preston's but offering none of the comfort. A sweet kid who liked seeds becoming a war guy because it was either that or losing his mind and his life along with it.
At every step of the way, failing to protect those who cared for him. Choosing vengeance because it was already too late to choose to save

●●● Warding II
★ As with almost everything in magic, there are countless ways to create protective barriers around objects and places.
☆ Wards need to be effective and powerful, so choose methods you can relate to, and avoid experimenting with things you don't know or have a lot of experience with.
❗ Before creating a protective barrier anywhere, physical and spiritual purification is necessary, because in the same way that wards are able to prevent certain energies from entering, they also prevent all energies that are already inside from leaving. Ideally, the physical space should be clean and purified, to prevent existing energies from influencing the expected final result.

→ Warding Methods 101
• Spray warding
This is a simple method that doesn't require much visualization, and is recommended for beginners. The intention placed at the time of creating and applying the flavoring, and choosing the right herbs is enough.
Wards made from air fresheners are not as durable, and need to be redone every month or so. There are ways to enhance the effect, at the time of creating the flavoring, by combining it with sigils, crystals and using a good amount of herbs with protective properties.
• Incense
For warding, it is recommended that only natural resin incenses are used, made from herbs with protective properties. If that's not possible, make an herbal smoking stick, but don't just use incense sticks to create energy barriers. Avoid using them, but if you still want to, combine them with other methods, or your ward will have low energy and will quickly deactivate.
• Sigils
The best thing is that you create a specific sigil for the warding of the object or place you want to protect. You can adapt bindrunes for this purpose, but beware of runes that will be formed unintentionally during the process, as they can weaken or get in the way of the desired end result.
• Energy targeting
If you're already experienced with energy manipulation and directing, this is a great way to work on these aspects and make your ward exactly the way you want it to look. It's also a very customizable way, so it's great for creating your own personal way of making energy barriers.
• Containers
Barriers made using containers as a base have good longevity, and need to be reinforced less frequently. Choose a variety of fresh or dried herbs with protective properties, and add other ingredients that can boost energy, such as properly purified and energized essential oils and crystals for protective purposes.
• Salt
Works well for creating temporary barriers. The salt used can be coarse salt, sea salt or table salt as a last resort. For more intensified protection, I recommend black salt
