At some point 13 fans needs to actually put the numbers to paper on the era's audience numbers, because my recollection is that they're perfectly on par and at times even better than Capaldi's and several of the latest specials. I'm tired of haters whining about 'everyone hated it' when they mean misogynists targeted it and boycotted it from the very instance of a rumour that 13 would be a woman.
Peter Nolan from Blogtor Who did a post on the numbers after the airing of Power of the Doctor, in one section of the post he compares the Whittaker and Capaldi eras…
“It’s remarkable then, that the Whittaker era of Doctor Who is overall on course not only to retain the audience it was given, but actually very slightly grow it. The average Thirteenth Doctor was watched by 4.67m viewers, up 0.12m (2.6%) on the 4.55m average of the Twelfth Doctor. It’s median viewing figure of 4.21m, meanwhile, is 0.34m (7.4%) lower than Capaldi’s, representing the boost Whittaker’s average is given by the large audiences for her first series. But overall, we haven’t seen Doctor Who just do a respectable job all things considered. Rather, it actually got ratings that would be good a decade ago.”
You can check out the whole article here https://www.blogtorwho.com/doctor-who-power-of-the-doctor-viewing-figures/?amp=1
As you can see the Whittier era did quite well especially when considering it had to fight to get through the Pandemic, which people seem to like to act like isn’t a big deal with their revisionist history of how difficult that time actually was. Not only were millions dying and getting sick, people were losing their jobs and lock downs were keeping people at home and a number of parents learnt how hard it was to home school your child even with a teacher on zoom, some while also having to work full time at home. This isn’t to mention the ridiculous amount of restrictions on how they could make the show and keep everyone safe. Sadly they also just didn’t have budget, it was why they needed Disney to come in. In the Who Corner to Corner podcast Chibs talks about how he wanted to do a new years special after Flux but was told there was no budget and he couldn’t do it but he wanted there to be a new year special so he ask if he used monster from the cupboard (a couple daleks they had sitting there) a warehouse and only 2 guest stars could he do it and they still told him they didn’t think so but he told them they were doing it and then we got Eve of the Daleks, one of my fav episodes of the run.
This goes to show the show was struggling to afford to make episodes it had no real money for marketing. If series 12 and Flux got the marketing series 11 did of course we would have seen even bigger numbers but Chibs stated in his Radio Free Skaro podcast from Gally One in 2023 that the only marketing budget they had after series 11 was marketing that could be done on the BBC that’s extremely limiting. They also didn’t have a brand manager unlike all previous eras. If you can afford a brand manager you’re not going to choose to not have one and having one probably would have also help quite a bit.
It’s not 2008 anymore, even Tennent couldn’t pull his 2008 numbers and that was with the big Disney budget to make the show and market the show, and they had a year to market the show and the most well known Doctor, so considering that vs what Chibs had to work with the Whittaker era is a solid era of Doctor Who. It just came at a time when the Budget was struggling, and the TV landscape was changing along with a campaign to try and destroy it before it began simply because they chose a Woman to be the Doctor, as demonstrated by the fact the BBC had to release a press statement backing Whittakers casting and the change to a Female Doctor. And that did have a snow ball effect of people picking everything apart to an insane level they do not do with any of the episodes from the male Doctors episodes a lot of which could be seen as far more problematic.
All this to say could the numbers had been better? Yes, if they had budget to market the show the way it needs to be marketed in a landscape with a million competing shows on far more streaming services than there were regular channels back in the day. But did the show do well with the limited resources it had. Also Yes.

AO3 Tag Game!
Tagged by @mvshortcut :) I'm gonna stick with just this fandom/this account for this one to make it less confusing
How many works do you have on AO3?
44. (Including snippet collections.) For this fandom/account. Far more if you count bi-demon-ium or my old account or my older account or
What’s your total AO3 word count?
Okay this one it won't let me separate by pseud or fandom so you're just gonna have to live with being lumped in with all my MBS and a few other misc fics at "653,461". Didn't get the other accounts though. Man, I'm a mess
How many fandoms have you written for, and what are they?
Okay, well, this one by nature is also not solely for this fandom,
(number in parentheses is number of ao3 works posted)
Ted Lasso (obviously) (44) (including snippet collections)
The Mysterious Benedict Society (116) (also including snippet collections)
Instinct (2) (one is a small snippet collection--)
House MD (1)
Death by Dying (1)
Gravity Falls, technically, but it was one crossover (1)
ditto with The Legend of Zelda (1)
King Falls AM (1)
The House in the Cerulean Sea (6)
Shadowhunters (??? at least 36) (some now hidden/lost)
Professor Layton (1)
The Librarians (2)
The Sandman (1)
The Mentalist (2)
Star Trek (AOS) (1)
Sanders Sides (at least 1)
Miraculous Ladybug (1)
Rosewell: New Mexico (2)
The Dresden Files (1)
That's stuff posted to ao3/finished. There's also, technically,
for stuff I published when I was twelve and I now refuse to acknowledge (not all bc of the fandom but bc the fic was Bad):
Doctor Who
Supernatural
Sherlock
Psych
Castle
Welcome to Night Vale
Avengers
A Series of Unfortunate Events
And then stuff I've written for but never finished:
Warehouse 13
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016)
Dirk Gently (2010)
SurrealEstate
Zoo (podcast)
Once Upon a Time
Scooby Doo
Person of Interest
The Goes Wrong Show
Spy Kids (???)
Ace Attorney
The Adventure Zone
Criminal Minds
Star Trek (TOS, TNG, and DS9)
Haven
MacGyver
Trollhunters
exactly one (1) joke The Magnus Archives fic
Percy Jackson and the Olympians + The Kane Chronicles + Tales of Apollo
Leverage
Pushing Daisies
The Sarah Jane Adventures
Megamind
Bones
Avatar: the Last Airbender
Lucifer
Some of these are deeply questionable and/or only have like two (2) wips or even posted works at most, but I'm thorough. Also, I will write about almost anything bc my brain loves to process things like this. I may have even missed something
Top five fics by kudos:
Ted Lasso Kisses Trent Crimm On The Mouth (1125)
semaphore (977)
off the handle (719)
linger (699) (nice)
a preacher, a bikini, and a kiss or two (641)
Do you respond to comments?
I really try to, but then I get all in my head about it and/or am really really tired and put it off so long it then feels like it would be weird to respond because it's been forever. However, if there's a direct question or something I want to address/respond to, as in, I have something particularly unique to say or a question to answer, then I'll usually respond really fast
What’s the fic with the angstiest ending you’ve ever written?
Honestly, I'm not a huge unhappy ending person, a lot of the time I'll have a first chapter I was initially going to end really angsty (see ink sunset and make a mess of you) and then added more to fix it at least somewhat. As is... maybe the somewhat unresolved emotional tension (for Ted and Trent, at least, Roy's doing great) in something to get off my chest, the +1 for betrayal's sting / absolution's balm? I have some worse ones in an old fandom on an old account but. meh.
Do you write crossovers?
Not often, but I rotate them in my brain. Honestly, though, I'm more inclined to write a fusion than a crossover proper. And even so, I tend to just be thinking about it rather than actually writing it. I've only written one crossover in recent memory (recently, that is) and it was mostly a joke about a shared actress made into actual angst.
Have you ever gotten hate on a fic?
Yeah lmao
Do you write smut?
😏 sure do
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
👁️👁️ not in this fandom
Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes!! also not in this fandom
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
In this fandom? Trent/Ted. overall? no idea, because recency bias, my all-time favorite is whatever I'm into right now, which isn't really objective but hyperfixationitis.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you ever will?
:( so many. AND there are a lot of posted fics I want to write a sequel/companion piece for and idk if I'll ever get the energy...
I guess off the top of my head, for this fandom, I'd go with lost sight of (who you are) (motivation died because it's old enough no one knows it exists anymore lkfgjh) and ink sunset (I WANNA FINISH IT I DO I DO I DO)
What are your writing strengths?
I think I can write a really funny string of dialogue, and I'm also fond of fun metaphors, both in the elegant poetic way and in the more Douglas Adams/Terry Pratchett way (which is to say, still potentially elegant but also comedic as hell)
What are your writing weaknesses?
Motivating myself to write anything; being overly self-indulgent
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fics?
I'm extremely bad at linguistics in general, so if I must include someone talking in another language in my fic, I think I'd tend to cheat and do italics or some other indication that this is 'in another language' (ie "Where are you going?" she asked in Russian), but that's admittedly a lazy approach. But I also think it's probably better than butchering it with an auto-translator? Also, when people just include the translation in the end notes, even with a link (although that makes it marginally better) it breaks the flow of the story and makes it hard to read. Making an effort to at least match grammar is good (which I would do if it was for longer than a single scene, probably) but I think the best solution is when people know what they're doing and like, have an actual translation with a little html code so you can click on it and it reveals what it means? Or if you're clever, revealing what it means using context around it, but that has its own limitations. So that both like, uses the actual language and doesn't break up the flow. It balances accessibility, flow, and respect for the other language in question well. But you've got to both know what you're doing with the language (either asking someone/hiring someone/knowing the language yourself) and the html (although there are guides for that you'd have to spend time figuring it out + know it exists in the first place to look). And this is fanfiction, something we ultimately do for free in our spare time, so the lazy approach, I think, can be understandable. Maybe not in every context, but it's not worth stressing a lot over in a few random lines or anything, you know? It is really cool when people do know a language well enough to include it properly in a fic, though, it can say a lot about a character or dynamic; and their background(s) and like. it's neat :)
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?
Ever? Doctor Who. In a shitty little notebook in middle school. Then there was some Star Trek (both TNG and TOS) and Avatar: the Last Airbender and Marvel and such, and then Supernatural (my first smut? extremely terrible Destiel smut. rip) and I think the first thing I ever posted was Welcome to Night Vale? Not sure.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written so far?
Oh, man. I have no idea. Here's a few favorites from this fandom:
matters of the heart
trick & treat
vita nova
melt like this
"second impressions"
"reveal"
probably those time travel snippets, just in general

My First Ever Audio Drama Sunday!
Alright, I did a quick bit of research for etiquette, though of course solid chance I get something wrong but this week has been a great week podcast wise! Hopefully I don't err on anything major in my attempt to praise!
First off my weekly edge of my seat listens!
@innbetween Launched their next episode Wednesday for Patrons and I don't think it's out yet for everybody else so probably I shouldn't share spoilers but I will say HOLY SAP. There's something about this episode that made me go back and listen to season 5 again from the beginning in that way that a really good reveal does? Like you know that there was some foreshadowing that you missed and you have to walk back to admire it? You guys are in for a treat when it drops!
Thursday is of course Magnus Protocol Day. It's so hard waiting each week for a new hit of that stuff. All I want is for someone to pop something conversational into that search function bar that doesn't work and figure out if archivist.exe will reply! Hasn't happened yet but holding out hope. Like everybody else I am going mad at the slow burn of tantalizing bits dropped like bread crumbs in front of a starving man. I scream for more bread but I know the trail is more important than my instant gratification. As much as I feel like I'm strained under the pressure I can only hope that the pace is maintained and that I am not given everything I want too soon.
As for my binge quotient I am working my way through Spirit box Radio. I'm still in the first season but have already recommended it to about three people. I don't know if I've ever encountered an adorable horror pod before? I feel like that requires explanation because yes I've definitely encountered aspects of a horror podcast that made me go "aww cute!" but that was aspects. This is kind of more like the whole thing is adorable and the horror is there, sure , but playing second back up fiddle to the adorable. It's also doing that thing where it's dripping a overarching mystery into my ear little bits at a time which I am beginning to realize how very weak I am to. It's the paper to my rock, I am overwhelmed.
And that's been my week! I've been spending a lot of time with headphones on and in front of microphones and things for editing our episode 13. I don't know if this is a vibe among other editors but I find myself going "I wish I could really just listen to a podcast while I'm making this podcast" the way I do at my regular job when I need to sort a warehouse or something. Sadly sound and brains just don't work like that. What I wouldn't give for a fully partitionable brain.
Looking forward to another week full of delicious ear candy!

Have you ever had a fic stolen?
👁️👁️ not. Directly in this fandom

yes!! also not in this fandom
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
In this fandom? Nicholas/Milligan. Overall, ever? Recency bias/hyperfixationitis says whatever I'm into the most at the moment. But generally for MBS I prefer gen (although I've written a lot of Nicholas/Milligan, that's partially because it's blissfully easier to find gen already)
What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you ever will?
:(
SO many
Particularly minotaur, the dearly departed, and the "paralyzed" series. Oh and the hanahaki AU
What are your writing strengths?
I think I can write a really funny string of dialogue, and I'm also fond of fun metaphors, both in the elegant poetic way and in the more Douglas Adams/Terry Pratchett way (which is to say, still potentially elegant but also comedic as hell)

Mannn I really wish they had done something with Ryan's youtube channel back in S11/12. I would have loved if he kept uploading videos during his travels on the TARDIS (like a video diary), from a corner or a little removed from the action (perhaps so he'd not give away his location/time period to anyone watching, perhaps because The Doctor doesn't want to be caught on camera because that can cause problems).
But since you don't get that many quiet moments travelling with 13 you'd always have stuff happening just out of shot, or out of focus in the back of shot. Graham and Yaz would sometimes be vaguely visible but you'd only ever hear bits of 13's voice.
Because then imagine using that premise to use those youtube videos for
a) little extra previews for new episodes/series (and you'd be able to freeze-frame and try to figure out where Ryan is or who the fam is running away from or whatever)
and
b) you could play with the idea that in-universe Ryan's videos start getting popular, particularly with alien conspiracy groups like in Love and Monsters, who gradually start to notice stuff in Ryan's videos aren't quite right: The logos on the boxes in the massive warehouse Ryan's blogging from don't correspond with any online retailer anyone knows. Or that Ryan seems to be filming from inside buildings he absolutely should not have access to. Or something falls in the background and the gravity somehow seems odd. Some people comment on his videos about this and Ryan tries to play it off as "Ah... one of my friends is really into VFX and likes to edit my videos". But then it really gets crazy after Spyfall part II when his face appears everywhere and Ryan just starts frantically deleting all the comments people leave on his videos. Though some time later he'd upload a video like "my friend is not doing okay and they're hiding something from us but i can't get them to talk, I think we need to stage an intervention" and you'd think it's about Ryan's friend from home but it's just 13 being 13.
and
c) building on this, when Jack catches up with the Fam in Fugitive of the Judoon, it turns out he managed to track the location of the TARDIS down because he's subscribed to Ryan's youtube channel. (of course no one in the back of Ryan's video's has ever referred to the disembodied female voice as "Doctor" so Jack still doesn't realise which person is The Doctor)
and
d) In the run up to Doctor Who Redacted, Ryan's last video gets a comment from one of the Blue Box Files podcast girls asking for an interview and one week later his whole youtube channel disappears

Synopsis: Kingpin builds his criminal empire alongside his mercenaries and his right-hand man, Larks.
Matt graduates law school and gets a job at a large law firm in Boston. They send him to New York for a case where he reminisces about his childhood. He's stopped by a group of muggers, but deciding that they are no different than the bullies that taunted him as a child, he fights them and hurts them all severely. He then returns to his father's old gym, now abandoned, where he meets a young girl named Mickey. She reminds Matt of his younger self.
After weeks in New York, Matt runs into his former roommate Foggy Nelson and they catch up. He helps Foggy with a case against a slumlord, and Matt remembers that he became a lawyer because he wanted to do good.
Kingpin orders his men to cut costs in their film division. The order goes down the chain of command until two drug-addict criminals are ordered to kidnap a young girl. They kidnap Mickey.
Matt leaves for the airport so he can go back to Boston, but decides to say goodbye to Mickey first. Upon reaching the gym he finds her hat on the ground, which he had never known her to take off. He uses the address in her hat to find her home. The criminals call the home to ransom her. One of the criminals calls her boss to tell him that the kid is being ransomed against his wishes. Kingpin sends Larks to set things straight.
Matt watches Mickey's father deliver the ransom the money in a drop-off. He waits until the criminal takes the money and then follows him. Larks kills the criminal and sees Matt. Kingpin deduces that this must have been a vigilante. Mickey is taken to a warehouse were several children are being kept, but Matt follows Larks. He moves silently around the facility, taking out all of the guards, and sabotaging the getaway car.

Where Do I Even Start: The Magnus Archives
Start with: “MAG 81 - A Guest for Mr. Spider” (released November 22, 2017)
Why THAT Episode?
“A Guest for Mr. Spider” has a similar format to their other beginning episodes but involves a f r e a k y children’s book of the same name. However, it’s not just a spooky story told in the format of a recording for a spooky archive - it teases other past events from the previous two seasons (I’ll explain, I promise!) that will get you interested in the rest of the podcast!
I’ll be honest - while The Magnus Archives should be an instant hit for me, I’ve tried getting into it at least 3 times, without success. I’ve listened to the first 8-ish episodes several times and haven’t been able to really get hooked. BUT! This episode, while much later in the story, was the first one that made me feel intrigued by the past episodes and willing to go through the first two seasons to get at exactly what happened to the narrator.
What Is The Podcast About?
The Magnus Archives is a surrealist/horror fiction podcast  from the Rusty Quill network where each episode features a different fictional story, framed as a recording that has been entered into a mysterious archive that the newest archivist, Jonathan, is sorting through.
However, there is a continuous plot throughout the podcast (as the suggested episode “MAG 81 - A Guest for Mr. Spider” references). I’ve seen a ton of fanart for the show that also seems very intriguing, if the visuals would intrigue you!
Why Should I Listen To It?
Many people have linked The Magnus Archives to Welcome to Night Vale in terms of surrealism/horror and a continuous plot. The shows are both made up of generally self-contained episodes with the plot coming through in subtle ways at the beginning. They both have multiple voice actors, sound effects, and are well-produced.
I would also say that you could compare The Magnus Archives to The X-Files if you’re more inclined to TV show comparisons! They’re both presented as separate cases, again with that continuous plot (sub-plot?) throughout.
In one sense, it’s also similar to The Librarians (TV show and movies) and Warehouse 13 (TV show). Both of those TV shows have a lot more humor than The Magnus Archives, but they both have that ‘odd case’ format.
While it’s still a difficult podcast for me to personally get into, I know of a lot of people who truly love it, so give it a try!
~Happy listening!~

Another day, another Audioverse 2022 nominee! I accidentally fell asleep before I posted this, so I guess technically you might get two today. Let's talk about The Godfrey Audio Guide (@thegodfreyguide ). The Godfrey Audio Guide is a spec-fic, museum-based Fiction podcast. If you've ever gone to a decent sized museum or traveling exhibition you've had a self guided audio tour available. And the same is true of the Annabelle H. Godfrey Historic Estate and Museum. The museum asks that you do not touch the art, not just for preservation, but also FOR YOUR SAFETY. You see, the art, and frankly the whole premise is... *ahem* a bit odd. Interactive art cubes that telaport you from one place to another, or more standard pieces that come about through unexplainable provence. Famous paintings that pair with a story of Annabelle's life or a quirky or amusing exhibit (Munch's The Scream having a soundproof photo booth where you can go to scream--your photos are available in the gift shop), unexpected varients of famous paintings (Van Gogh's Irises being surrealist human eyes on stalks) or alternate histories. Where the Winchester Mystery House meets Warehouse 13 meets an excentric art collector, The Godfrey Audio Guide has a collection for everyone. And remember, the fastest way to exit any floor is, of course, through the gift shop! Cleverly curated, there are 45, 10-13 minute episodes to guide you on your way. Honestly, the only other fictional audio guide I've heard was the excellent Second season of @withinthewires . I'm getting a real kick out of it, I hope you will too. So if you enjoy big museum audio guide energy, Warehouse 13/or deadpan Welcome to Nightvale vibes, and alternate reality art, then The Godfrey Audio Guide is for you!

Hi everyone! We are so close to 3K listens, which feels exciting! If you are looking for a new audio fiction podcast that is essentially guided improve from a MOTW ttrpg edited (by the amazing Alex LaVelle) into an audio drama with a HUGE casts, lots of mysteries, check us out?
We take loving(?) inspiration from the following sources:
Gravity Falls
Buffy
Community
Wayward Pines
Glee, I fucking guess
What We Do in the Shadows
Greek mythos
Ted Lasso
Halloweentown
Warehouse 13
Small Spaces by Katharine Arden
Camp Whatever by Chris Grine
We are a wonderful, welcoming community, where most of the yelling is about the secrets the characters are keeping, and at me for not quitting my job so we can play more!
We have 7 episodes out, and release a new one every other week! And we aren't going anywhere any time soon - we have enough raw content recorded to get us through February 2023, and that's without even coming close to the climax of season 1!*
Finally, our Tumblr has a section for all our episodes and actors and characters!
