Character Matters
I am still remembering Memorial Day as I type this blog today. I have a dear friend who makes suggestions to me about potential blog subject matter. And, daily, he gives me encouraging and supportive comments about what I blog about via text messaging me. In the words of Dionne Warwick, ”That’s What Friends Are For”. So, for my Memorial Day blog, he suggested I post one of the photos of the many…

Arcane Year 2 Event Week!
From November 7th to the 13th
#ArcaneYear2 / #ArcaneYearTwo
Let's celebrate Arcane on its second anniversary! All fanworks are welcome! In this special week, you have a choice of two themes, each with unique prompts.
What Could Have Been
Nov 7 : Faction Swap / First Time Nov 8 : Vander Lives / Broken Nov 9 : Hugs / Family / Grief Nov 10 : Food / Gift / Fix It Nov 11 : AU / Soulmate / Adoption Nov 12 : Nightmare / Kiss / Jealousy Nov 13 : Free Day / Goodbyes
What Could Yet Be
Nov 7 : Hextech / Ghost / Blood Nov 8 : Common Enemy / Warwick Nov 9 : Begging / Shimmer / Art Nov 10 : Chaos / Light / Promise Nov 11 : Noxus / Secrets / Fear Nov 12 : Machine Herald / Faith / Lies Nov 13 : Voices / Legacy / Hope
How does this work?
The "What could have been" prompts were chosen to fit fics or art (or meta, playlists, etc) set before or during season 1.
This includes ideas like "Heimerdinger used to travel the world before founding Piltover" set before canon, as well as missing scenes like "Viktor creating his hextech arm" during the time skip, or "Vi waking up in Stillwater".
The "What could yet be" prompts were chosen for speculation about season 2 and beyond.
This includes ideas like "my favourite LoL character definitely rocks into Zaun" or "Jinx frees Warwick" or "How Viktor becomes the Machine Herald"
You can mix and match! You can do one theme for day 1, the other for day 2... And on day 3 you could use the 'family' prompt to write a season 2 AU! Ultimately these prompts are to provide inspiration and a framework. I will not police submissions, so long as you respect the rules. Please read them well!

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER ROUNDUP Lately, I've been thinking about all the amazing stories and legacies that've influenced who I want to be as a writer. I realized that I wanted to share the ones that I've loved most over the past month or so, and hopefully inspire others to share what inspired them! In no particular order, here are my November and December loves.
Forever In Between (18+) by @rebouks
Forever In Between has always been one of my favorite stories on tumblr, and it's usually what I read through to get myself back in gear and inspired to write! Becca puts so much love and passion into each line-- every character is rich with humanity-- it's hard not to get swept away.
WARWICK: Chapter III (16+) by @warwickroyals
Ayanna is truly a master in storytelling, and showcases her work through the sims in a way I'd never thought possible. Reading her posts is like stepping into a film. I can't recommend it enough, especially if you love devouring stories the same way I do!
Questioning: Identity by @lotuso3o
As part of Lotus' sixth gen in their whimsy stories legacy, they crafted this gorgeous post about Mariah's gender identity. I am a huge lover of any editing style that exudes warmth, and this one wrapped me up in a cozy blanket. Lotus' post is absolute perfection, it could be its own short story.
Nightlife Series (18+) by @nightlifeseries
Everything about the Nightlife Series brings out such nostalgia in me. It reminds me of of all the late night romantic, dramatic, and wild shows that were strictly off-limits growing up. This series has twists at every corner-- there's even a YouTube series to watch, too! I absolutely love coming back to it, and can't wait to see what happens next.

"And as for the solution to this? I think it’s to have less armor, and have the metal be a more obvious part of him. " YES YES MAKE HIM NAKEY LMAOO
Ok but for Real, Machine Herald really suffers from "2011 league champ design" syndrome. Is important to note that at that point they didn't even had a proper narrative team or cohesive lore direction, and they were just starting to build the world of Runaterra and the aesthetics associated with each region
That being said, they do (very slowly) update old champions under new standards, this is called a VGU or VU, and the results have always been fantastic (look up vgus for Volibear, Yorick, Fiddlesticks, Warwick and even Cait), and I can't wait to know what they will do with Viktor... eventually. There are some Champs that are in far more need that him
Yessssss, Viktor being *technically* naked would be so hype. Like… the armor IS HIM and he is the armor. He could probably move shit around, slim things down when he requires stealth. But it would be awesome if he just… doesn’t feel the need to put clothes on. His build is perfect, the mechanized form that it is. Why bother hiding it under something purely for cosmetic reasons? (Which is actually a decent argument for why should anyone wear clothes, and I think that’s kinda hilarious. Viktor=accidental nudism spokesman).
Also ooooooo yes those VGU are pretty great! And I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason they’re not/haven’t given Viktor an update in the last 5 years… is because they’re saving it to make it match Arcane; either by giving him an Arcane skin, or straight up changing his main look (kinda don’t want that?? Like I want him to be updated, but… I have a fondness for his outdated look, and I think it should still be an option. Like call it a legacy skin or something, rather than wiping it out entirely).
But either way… I want him to be spooky. I want him to be terrifying. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if Arcane MH doesn’t trigger my inner monster fucker, I don’t want it 🤣

“The legendary Burt Bacharach has died.
The Oscar-winner and composer of classics such as Dionne Warwick's, Walk On By, Jackie DeShannon's, What The World Needs Now Is Love, Aretha's, I Say a Little Prayer, plus many more, was 94.
What a life and legacy.🎶”
Tumblr media
"Together with Hal David, Burt Bacharach created songs that became standards in their own right. They were classy, catchy, commercial and musically complex, and scores of them became hits during a career that lasted more than 50 years..."

Fem February: Music
Okay my brain instantly went hard mode when I saw 'female fronted bands', before catching 'singers'. Because I was having a hell of a time remembering names of mixed gender bands with female singers.
Five faves, huh? Of Women Singers/Fronted Bands?
Muses of Yore, if you ever grace me with the name of the black heavy metal lady with the braids I will love you forever. I remember her from Headbanger's Ball but never did remember to write her name down. If this rings a bell with anyone, HER. She had fucking stage presence like whoa, and was awesome.
Anywho, moving on to the ones I can actually name.
TRACY CHAPMAN. Fucking hands down, Tracy is my all-time favorite woman singer AND song-writer. "Fast Car" might have been the gateway drug to knowing about her, but "Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution" sits in my soul and won't let go, right beside "Give Me One Reason". Her voice is in the perfect range to soothe and call to me, and the lyrics bring all the emotions, evoking a lot of how I grew up.
Janelle Monáe. She is (they are? I cannot remember where Janelle stands on pronouns at this moment), without a doubt in my mind, the absolute perfect heir to Prince's legacy. From the concept albums to the sheer vitality of the music and lyrics blending, Janelle is my favorite of this century so far.
The Bangles. Wait, Asp, really? A bubblegum pop girl group? At least pick the Go-Gos or something — NO. "Walk Like An Egyptian" slammed them onto my awareness. I LOVED the way vocals alternate between the women. I was over the moon that one of their names was Michael. That she was connected back to the Runaways just made that sweeter. The videos were great (they got Leonard Nimoy in one!). I truly blame the music business for them not going further, with the insistence on headlining Susanna Hoff as the lead singer.
Basia. While it is common for non-English speaking singers to lose their accent when singing English songs, Basia's still came through on her earliest albums. It added a different quality to the music that hooked me. Her second album was one of several in rotation as self-soothing on-repeat listens for me.
I'm going to cheat on number five, because I have three younger stars of the current century to highlight, and their sound/subjects all pull at me in a very similar fashion. Maggie Rogers ("Light On"), Rosa Linn ("SNAP"), and Alessia Cara ("Scars to Your Beautiful") were likely all introduced to me by my son's musical sharing. All three of these woman have a soothing range that I can listen to for hours. The way they approach life and love in their songs strikes a chord with me.
(I could go on for hours. Others considered for this included Donna Summer, The Pointer Sisters, Dionne Warwick, Florence Welch, Sarah McLachlan, Tina Turner, The Eurythmics, Enya, and Melissa Manchester.)

Sacrifice. It was at the heart of scientific discovery. Sacrificing time, money, family, love, and legacy were all mere steps on the path to progress. To set aside everything else in life for the single-minded pursuit of science was not only freeing, but necessary. Years of his life had been dedicated to this cause, possibly decades, at this point. There was no turning back, and the thought of it had never crossed his mind. No, this is what he was meant to be doing, even if the sacrifices made came at the cost of his own blood.
His blood was needed for the bonding process to be that much closer to completion. Once it had properly fixed itself to the creation's system, there would be great difficulty for it to attack him wildly. On top of that, the creation craved blood to survive as part of its physiology. He was solving two problems simultaneously. Plainly efficient, if he were to pay himself the compliment.
The machine hooked into his arm continued its pumping, drawing blood from three veins in his flesh in a pulsing rhythm. Pints had been drawn out of his body, thus far. He had managed to maintain focus by watching the seconds tick past on his pocket watch. Though the sight of his daughter's portrait in the lid got him distracted more than once. His thumb idly rounded the edges of the painting, counting the seconds as they passed.
He assumed he had been only semi-conscious for a moment, as he lifted his head head up in a daze. It seemed as though no safe amount of blood was going to be enough, in truth. He was feeling woozy, nauseous, and weak. Others may have stopped for fear of losing too much. He would push further, for the hopes of discovery were pecking away at his thoughts. Fatigue tugged his consciousness with it, making his head droop down again. He fought it, jerking back up.
Tumblr media
He looked up to his creation, Warwick, as he'd been calling him, suspended from chains and tubes. A large chemical chamber was affixed to its back, right between its shoulder blades. It took in slow, growling breaths, barely moving. It was alive, but locked in slumber. He would have to go further. He let the pumping continue, despite the cold chill now starting to overtake his body. He focused again on the time, closing the lid of his pocket watch and gripping it in his palm to feel the tick of the gears against his skin.
Eventually, it proved to be too much for his body to handle, and a cold wash took his senses into darkness. He fell limp against the chair. The pocket watch tumbled out of his hand and popped open to show the young girl's face, rolling to a stop in front of Warwick's suspended mass.
When he awoke, the pump had automatically stopped, sensing the drop of his heart rhythm through the delicate machinery he'd crafted. His eyes raised to behold his creation, but an icy chill seized him when he saw empty space. He struggled to his feet, pulling the pump off of his arm with a bloody ooze. He walked up to the vacant chains and ran his long fingers along the iron links. That... was not good.
Tumblr media
It was another one of those nights within the City of Iron and Glass. Gloom sank over the buildings and people huddled in their homes for warmth and clearer air. He, on the other hand, had a visit to make.
He would always make the trip to that old statue in secret, not wanting the eyes of his followers to set upon his more personal moments. Better to have them see him strong and stern as opposed to any shade of emotion he may shed in front of his former lover. He took steady steps up to the foot of the statue, pulling his flash from his jacket pocket. "Hello, Vander," he announced his presence, unscrewing the cap of the flask for a quick swig. "Here I am, again."
He turned and took a seat on the edge of the statue's wide pedestal, resting his arms over his knees. "The city takes it's toll on you, doesn't it? Day after day, a new struggle is laid down at your feet, and you're the only one expected to solve it." He huffed, shoulders slumping by a few degrees. "Oh, it used to be so simple. Back then, it was the two of us, tackling the problem head-on with reckless abandon. Ready to thwart Topside's next attempt at subjugation."
Tumblr media
He looked wearily down at the flask. "But then you changed. Everything changed, and I was alone." He downed a healthy drink more of his whiskey. "It was liberating, yet suffocating, to bear that weight. There's this...freedom to lead the people - to guide them the way that I had always wanted to, and yet..." He let out a sigh and shook his head. "There will always be lingering remnants of your people, your ideals, of you. I'll never truly escape you and your memory, will I?"

people love their martyrs and they love their tragedies, and most of all they love the image of an innocent victim dying horribly as promulgated by the victorians, which is probably why figures like jane dudley and edward v have gained the legacies they have. they get their titles as well - lady jane grey and the princes in the tower - which emphasise their innocence and of course nobility. and you see it in the victorian paintings, of scared and angelic children led by the hand to their deaths. the tragic prince whose life was cut short is great material to fixate upon, especially when they (perhaps?) died a horrible and undeserved death, because then you have a villain and a hero and a loss to avenge. same with arthur tudor - you get the emerging ideal of a golden prince whose life was cut short before his time, ushering in the tyranny of henry viii, and because an older child is the perfect material for someone who is both old enough to be considered a loss and young enough to be considered unblemished. nobody gives a fuck about figures of a similarly young age like katherine howard, who was executed for a crime that was retroactively made illegal, who was also used by men far older than her, because she's a slut and a whore and other such slander which mean she's lost her innocence. nobody gives a fuck about edward, earl of warwick, ruthlessly manipulated by the adult men in his life, presumably because he was an adult when he died, despite his ostensibly tragic life. hell, nobody gives a fuck about the people executed by henry viii who weren't literally canonised, like thomas cromwell or edward stafford, because they were adult men and therefore to blame for a tyrant killing them...? who knows. idk, i have a lot more sympathy for figures who were old enough to know and understand what was going on and who were mercilessly destroyed anyway, because they had lives, they were something, they stood for something far greater than the potential of standing for something. they were full people, not just what-ifs. they were victims, but not interesting victims, so nobody pities them. not that the traditional murdered children don't merit sympathy, obviously they do, but it's such a tired narrative and it still holds so much weight. i just think we need to reconsider the way we talk about the executed and the murdered: nobody deserves to die, not just the ones the victorians personally found appealing.

2025 will mark the 40th anniversary of Dionne Warwick’s cultural milestone single, “That’s What Friends Are For.” The one-off single, featuring the equally iconic Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder, “That’s What Friends Are For,” was released as a charity single in October 1985 to support AIDS research. The song achieved monumental success and cemented Warwick’s legacy as not just a music icon but a significant figure in the history of AIDS advocacy.
Dionne Warwick emerged as a groundbreaking performer in the 1960s, her voice becoming the medium for the poignant lyrics of the songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David. With hits like “Walk On By” and “Say a Little Prayer,” she became synonymous with a refined pop and R&B style. As musical styles changed in the 1970s and 1980s, Warwick adapted to the changing musical landscape, dominated by Disco and the advent of MTV-oriented superstars.
youtube
The genesis of “That’s What Friends Are For” lies in its initial recording by Rod Stewart for the 1982 comedy movie “Night Shift.” Stewart’s version was in concert with the schmaltzy ballad sound that dominated pop radio at the time and went relatively unnoticed. Written by Burt Bacharach & Carole Bayer Sager, Warwick’s 1985 version was a rallying cry in the fight against AIDS and catapulted the song into music and AIDS history.
Featuring Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder and billed as Dionne & Friends, “That’s What Friends Are For” was released in October 1985, just a few weeks after the AIDS-related death of Rock Hudson, a beloved American Hollywood Legend. Hudson’s death marked a significant shift in America’s understanding of AIDS and song’s poignant message of friendship and unconditional love resonated with music listeners during a pivotal time.
Tumblr media
The proceeds of the platinum-selling “That’s What Friends Are For” were donated to the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR). Co-founded by Elizabeth Taylor in September 1985, one of AmFar’s first donations was a gift of $250,000 from Rock Hudson shortly before his death a month later. This gift, along with the amplification and monetary support by “That’s What Friends Are For,” AmFar has contributed to numerous breakthroughs that have extended and saved lives worldwide.
Dionne Warwick’s AIDS advocacy was not limited to this song. She became a vocal and visible advocate for AIDS research, education, and compassion. In March 1990 “That’s What Friends Are For” was performed by Warwick and her cousin Whitney Houston as the finale at the AIDS benefit That’s What Friends Are For: Arista Records 15th Anniversary Concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The historic event, later televised on CBS, raised Over $2.5 million for various AIDS organizations.
youtube
Dionne Warwick’s dedication to AIDS advocacy continued for years, making her a significant figure not only in music history but also in the history of social activism. Her efforts helped shift public perception of AIDS and brought greater awareness and resources to combat the crisis. Her career is a testament to the power of music not just to reflect the times but to shape them.
Tumblr media
Dionne Warwick is an enduring icon in both music and social activism. Praise her!

my second Master's Degree is officially COMPLETE!! these past two years at Warwick University were a rich immersion in the art of poetry & in the practice of literary translation. milestones achieved have been:
completing my dissertation, entitled "Rendering Sacred Texts: Ethics and the Question of Untranslatability", in which i explored the practice of translating sacred texts and the intricate issues it presents in the field of translation studies, mainly posed by the dilemma that is the hypothesis of an intrinsically sacred quality to languages such as Sanskrit or Latin. i argued that in the case of non-dual traditions, the subsequent question, of whether translation would defile the text, is incongruent with the philosophy & cosmology the text is rooted in. i used the Lalitāsahasranāma, a central hymn of Śrīvidyā, as a case-study.
conducting my poetic research centred on bhakti or devotional poetry, a genre of Indian poetry which worships the Divine as the Beloved. i worked on two bhakti collections: "odes to the Monsoon One" and "the Monsoon One and the pilgrim", which explore a woman’s mystical journey. written as a response to the lingering legacy of female exclusion from spirituality that is present literature, the poetry rebels against misogynistic religious texts thematically, through female-centred imagery deifying the demonised body, through the subversion of elements of oppression such as motifs of marriage. the Divine is worshipped in my poems as a lover. i argued that for as long as remnants of a religious culture exclusive of women persist in South Asian literature and practice, for so long will bhakti poetry be needed for devotional rebuttal.
more on this soon! i am hoping for these to be published in 2024 or 2025.
i extend my gratitude to my extraordinary professors: my supervisors Dr. Jodie Kim & Rosalind Harvey; Professor David Morley, as well as Dr. Chantal Wright, who generously & expertly encouraged and guided me, as well as expressed genuine interest in my work - interest which i especially appreciated when my work took unconventional routes!
as this chapter ends, a new one at Edinburgh begins! onward!

I am working on story posts for May and want to post more consistently, but I want to do little posts along the way that will give my story more historical and social context. These will include info dumps, Wikipedia pages, and news articles. I'm not really sure where to start, so here are some opinions for you to choose from.
Sunderland Kings - Bacially each post would talk about the reign of each of the previous Warwick kings and their legacies. I'd focus mostly on their reigns and main accomplishments on the throne.
Princess Ruby - Ruby was a very influential Warwick that hasn't even appeared in my story yet! I'd basically chronicle her life, her marriage to a prince, and how she influenced the royal family during her long life. Like, she's basically the royal woman who set the standard for all female members of the family, despite never being Queen.
Kamryn and Alex - This one is rooted in the present, but would basically focus on all the drama surrounding Alex and Kamryn, from having a baby out of wedlock to their break up and all the mess in between. This will focus more on the media portrayal rather than Alex and Kamryn themselves, since the story is already doing the job of focusing on them

What exactly is Warwick's legacy dispute?
I assume you talk about Richard Neville, the Kingmaker considering the XVth century had three 'Warwick dispute'. There are two legacies around the Kingmaker, coveted mainly by his two sons-in-law. The material legacy are his immense estates, ranging form his Neville lordships in Northern England to his Midlands Beauchamp estates without forgetting the Spencer-Montagu lands. All this made him one of the biggest, richest landowners in England, having lands in many counties and a titanic annual income (around £ 5,400). Corollary to that was his vast pool of vassals, servants, and connexions which made him an immensely influential individual.
The second legacy is his legend, his aura, his myth. He's the Kingmaker. He's the one rebelling for the common good, the hero of the multitude, the pirate of the Channel, the mighty figure dealing with kings and cardinals. His popularity is genuine, and his fame is immense. His legacy is dangerous to kings, considering he overthrew both Edward IV and Henry VI on accusations of misrule and abuse and for common good.
Despite his betrayal, Clarence was his natural heir as son-in-law and could enter his inheritance and make sure Warwick wasn't attainted. That opened his succession without the taint of treason and fear of confiscation. Gloucester was a more discreet competitor. By Patent Letters, he won the Neville lordships that were in entail to the Neville male line. He simply took advantage from the attainder of the father's male heir, John Neville.
Gloucester played his cards well: he convinced Anne Neville to marry him and triggered a succession crisis against Clarence. He played around fears of Clarence's overmighty position as a rich royal family member married to a wealthy heiress.
The inheritance was so massive it eventually required a public Parliamentary legislation to partake it. Basically it:
Utterly excluded other competitors with little reserve. Warwick's wife was legally death. George Neville was excluded from inheritance through his father's attainder, a highly unusual move.
Partake the inheritance mainly in favor of Clarence: he won both earldoms. and most southern lands but Richard won his offices and the Northern estates not as royal grants but marriage estates.
So that's it, Clarence won? Not really considering Richard managed to sneak more advantage following Clarence's death in 1478. He won back the Ealrdom of Salisbury for his son and many offices. More importantly, he successfully presented himself as Warwick's heir in the North, attracting his massive retinue that would help him all the way to usurpation.
As for his legend, it was caught by both. Clarence used it to shore up his popularity, Gloucester revived it in 1483 to overthrow a government and a king.

John Kasdan had promised a season 2, indicating that Willow was not canceled but hatus. He even wanted to bring back Val Kilmer. Now he agree to remove the series from Disney+. What are we to make of this ?
He has always said loud and clear that Willow was a childhood dream and that he was determined to finish its 3 seasons and even make it into a movie. He started working on this project in 2017. He wrote the character of Jade for Erin Kellyman when they met on the set of the film: Solo A Star Wars Story. A film he directed with his father.
Willow, the series, was full of hope for an entire community and for many other people. It doesn't matter what community we belong to. It's a series full of positive messages. For the first time, we discover a queer princess. A princess unlike any Disney princess to date. We discover courageous, strong female characters who learn to discover and love each other awkwardly. For the first time, we discover a queer romance that's not sexualized, but romantic, that emerges as the story unfolds, and that everyone accepts and doesn't judge. Unlike all Disney tales, here it's not a prince who saves a princess, but the other way around.
Willow joins all those series whose end we'll never know: The romance between Kit and Jade, the romance between Elora and Grayon, Graydon's past and childhood. Will Airk live up to his father's legacy? Will Madmartigan find his daughter Kit? Is Dark Elora Elora, torn between good and evil, or is she the new Crone? So many unanswered questions. And leave wounded fans with an emptiness in their hearts.
When, in 2020, the whole world came to a standstill and we all found ourselves trapped in our own homes, deprived of our freedom and our loved ones because of COVID, streaming platforms exploded. Taking over the film market, but destroying it in the process. Production after production, quantity without quality. Responding to strong online demand. Making promise after promise. Such was their power that even the great actors signed up with Netflix and Disney to produce their films, which were no longer shown in cinemas, and continued to work in this way afterwards. Real cinema as we had known it began to die out step by step.
The world began to go out again, to live, but everything had changed, both the people and society. Step by step, we returned to the theaters, in search of the cinema of the pre-Covid era.
The platforms continued to want to own everything, like Disney, buying LucasFilms, Marvels and exploiting again and again a franchise that everyone adored, including an audience that grew up with it. Today, this franchise has lost its soul.
Productions have continued, but audiences have grown tired of the overexposure. Nowadays, platforms have become the "kings" of the film industry, calling the shots. Denigrating and destroying the work of an entire crew.
The entire Willow team spent 9 months filming in Wales. It was a tiring and testing shoot. They all gave their all to their roles. Not to mention the month-long boot camp. The costumers, who made beautiful costumes representative of each character. The sets, Kenneth, the fights, the special effects…
Today, nothing is respected any more, whether it's the work of an entire crew, the actors, the scriptwriters (without them, there'd be no story, no films and no series), or, most importantly, the subscribers, the fans. Who are left with the emptiness of losing their favorite characters, their story and living their adventures with them. It's like having a piece of their soul ripped away. But the stories will continue through everyone's fan fiction.
Many people expected this series, this romance, to see Warwick Davis back in the role of a lifetime.
Let's not forget, before they're actors, they're human beings.
No one should have to fight to be represented, listened to and continue to see their favorite series.
Today's cinema is not representative of society. It's shaped by money-hungry financiers.
If cinema were run by people who acted with their heart and soul, then many great stories would continue to exist and be created
