For the last day of AAPI Heritage Month I'd like to talk about an amazing movie starring an Asian character. Big Hero 6.
THIS MOVIE IS A MASTERPIECE
1. Diverse cast
Hiro and Tadashi are biracial (half Caucasian and half Japanese)
Honey Lemon is Latin American
Wasabi is African American
GoGo is of Korean descent
Baymax is a robot
2. Lack of Romantic Subplots
I love a romance as much as the next person but it's refreshing to not see it
They could've had any number of dating combinations between the friends but they didn't
Abigail could've been Professor Robert Callaghan's wife, but they made her his daughter
3. How Grief and Loss Was Portrayed
Hiro wasn't over Tasashi's loss like that
They showed the funeral/memorial/wake
Hiro shutting down and not eating
Aunt Cass bringing him food and trying to continue on
Saying 'It's okay not to be okay and it's okay to be sad'
No one is ever really gone
You need the support of loved ones
4. The Bond of Friendship
The way Fred assigned nicknames
How they gathered to help Hiro with his project
They supported Hiro but tried to pull him back when they knew he was going too far
Helping each other design their suits/powers
They didn't belittle each other
Fred asking for a lizard serum and shrink ray
The way they loved Tadashi and how they love Hiro
'I spill wasabi on my shirt one time!"
GoGo taking the wheel during the car chase
5. Hiro and Tadashi's Relationship
The whole motorcycle scene
Tadashi shaking Hiro upside down
Tadashi showing Hiro Baymax
Hiro being nervous presenting and Tadashi calming his nerves
Tadashi cheering for his lil brother
We've seen sisterly bonds in Lilo and Stitch and Frozen so it was nice to see a brotherly bond
Upside down high five during Hiro's presentation
Tadashi telling Hiro his fly was down after the show
6. Life Lessons and Things From The Movie I Love
Seriously, I'd kill to go to San Fransokyo
There's great humor that doesn't step on people/groups to be funny
Don't be ashamed of being smart
Every team needs a Fred
Every friend group has a Fred
The uniqueness of their powers
The girls were shown to be as strong, brave and smart as the boys with out being like 'LOOK AT US WE'RE BEING FEMINISTS' bc forced feminism is a next door neighbor to fake feminism
THE BUTLER, his name's Heathcliff and he's so chill
Help others in need
Fred's theme song
Honey Lemon being pretty tall at 5'9 and still wearing heels
It's okay to be sad
'Welcome to mi casa, that's French for front door.' 'It's really... not'
Aunt Cass's love language is food
Sleepy Baymax is basically drunk
You can cry, it's okay
Seatbelts save lives, buckle up everytime
Using Baymax as a floatie
The rocket fist
Baymax swaying his feet when Hiro does
The ride to the abandoned island
Wasabi cutting a bad circle in the door
The brilliance of the story line
The plot twist doesn't come completely out of left field, it's slowly hinted at
Them smiting a pigeon when they first arrive on the island
Hiro saving Abigail after Callahan tried to kill him
The emotional depth
Their chaotic first battle
Female costumes that weren't overly sexualized, they were practical
The wear and tear on armour, the physical scratches and dents from the fights show
Sometimes life doesn't go the way you plan

this kinda sucks lmfaoaoao
You were a student at SFIT with a nice set of friends.
Gogo, an introverted, tough as stone goth-like figure, Honey Lemon, a sweet kind-hearted girl who always seemed to brighten up the day, Wasabi, a complete neat freak, Fred, the rich NEET, and of course how could you forget Tadashi.
Oh man, Tadashi.
You had a massive crush on the guy for about a year now, not daring to make a move just in case it goes horribly wrong and the friendship is ruined.
Today however, he had invited you to study at his place for the finals that were coming up soon this month. Saying that you were nervous was a understatement, you were practically sweating bullets as you stood in front of the café.
'Ok (Y/n), You can do this! Don't be a whip!' You screamed inside your head. After awkwardly standing in front of the door, you stepped inside, your nose being hit with the smell of coffee and cake. It calmed your nerves, that's for sure.
"Oh hey (Y/n)!" Suddenly Tadashi stood near a staircase behind the counter, "Ready for some late night studying or what?"
A few hours in and you were already horribly tired. You banged your head on the text book and groaned.
"You want some coffee?" A voice peeped up from beside you. He chuckled.
"Oh, yeah actually, that'd be nice. Thanks!"
He nodded and stood up from the seat next to you and headed downstairs to grab the drinks. After a while, he returned with a brown cup in hand. He smiled as he saw you and continued to walk in your direction.
"Here, I didn't know exactly what you'd want s-" He tripped on one of his brother's unfinished projects on the floor, the drinks flying out of his hand and splattering over you and your surroundings.
"O-oh man! I'm so sorry!" He frantically got on his knees and picked up the cups while simultaneously taking a towel and cleaning the coffee stained floor. After he was done he threw away the dirty towels and looked at you at and down.
"D-do you want one of my shirts for tonight? It's the least I can do." You could've sworn you saw a faint blush dusted on his cheeks as he scratched behind his neck awkwardly.
"Yeah, I-I'd appreciate it." You cursed at yourself for stuttering, you just couldn't wait to get out of your uncomfortable clothing.
He handed you a large cream shirt and lead you to a bathroom to clean yourself and change.
"Just leave your clothes in the basket and I'll clean it for you for tomorrow." He told you while closing the bathroom door. You sighed as you began to undress. You picked up the cream shirt and put it on, it was pretty huge on you, resting just on the edges of your shoulders and ending just above your thighs. You realized he didn't give you any trousers or anything to wear underneath. Maybe he forgot? Yeah that's probably it. You stepped outside of the bathroom, placing your dirty clothes inside the red basket like he told you to do.
"Oh hey, sorry if it's a little big on you but it's all I have right now." He smiled nervously, looking you up and down. He sat up and patted the seat besides him on his bed. You nervously trotted towards him and sat down, desperately making sure the shirt didn't go up any further to expose anything.
"Haha, sorry I couldn't find any pants either, they're all way to big so I figured there was no point." He chuckled.
"Ah- It's ok!"
The two of you sat in complete silence for a few minutes, before Tadashi took a look at the clock and back at you.
"Well, it's getting really late, d-do you wanna sleep here? Besides, your clothes are still wet so, I wouldn't mind!" He asked. Your face was probably as red as a tomato as he nudged closer to you.
"Um, sure! Where should I sleep?" You asked. "Well, I was thinking we could both just sleep on my bed? I-if that's what you want! Of course," He scratched the back of his neck again and looked to the side, away from you. A familiar pink blush forming back onto his face.
"O-oh...I guess that's alright!" You were out of your mind if you said that you were not horribly nervous yet horribly excited. You were
going to sleep with somebody you've liked for a year now, obviously not in that way, but you get what I mean. He turned off the lights and came back to you, laying down on his bed as he joined under the covers. Unknowingly to you, he came closer to you and wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you closer. You got comfortable and placed your head on his chest. You felt soft lips on your forehead for a split second. You looked up at him in confusion.
"Would it be bad timing if I said I love you?"
"Not at all."
He smiled down at you and leaned down to give you a peck on the lips. He sleepily chuckled.
"What's so funny?"
"You smell like coffee."
