Not to be gross but Hannibal Lecter would 100% collect trans Will Graham’s period blood to make a sauce for his lamb or something.

Weird thought: FCG ate the ruby shard F.R.I.D.A. gave them, so, technically, they could also eat Ashton’s crystal hair. 👀

The last of the 2022 garden’s onions have gotten yucky, so I had to off them. I saved the sprouts, though, and put them in a glass of water to green up.
Tumblr media
I’ll chop them up to cook with in the next couple days. I also have a batch of curly willow cuttings sitting in the window.
Tumblr media
Hopefully a portion of them will root and I can plant them in the wettest areas near the stream. I planted four little ones in ‘21 (I think). One survived, and actually needs a bit of pruning because it formed a Y in the trunk that won’t be stable long-term. It’s as tall as I am, and should shoot up quite a lot this summer.

Once upon a time a long long time ago, like, 12 years back, I briefly worked in an upholstery shop. The pay was low, but I loved the work. I left because something that paid a whole lot better was offered to me. I did really love that upholstery work though.
So when my desk chair was pathetically coming apart in 2020 (that’s 3 years ago), I decided I wanted to reupholster it properly. I knew how. Life is demanding, and I am an advanced procrastinator, so that’s why today, I reupholstered that chair.
Now, for anyone familiar with upholstery work, this is a laughably small task. For anyone else, this is kind of a cheap little chair. “Why put effort into it when you could just buy a new one?” Well that would just be wasteful, wouldn’t it?
I think I’m pretty happy with this silly little thing.
Before and after pics:

This was so terrible. I covered it with a towel for a long time because I couldn’t deal with all the ragged edges of the cracked vinyl.
Then today I started taking it apart and discovered the sad vinyl was not this chair’s original covering.
No. Apparently it used to be some vaguely velvety thing. When it became worn mostly smooth, a previous owner had stapled the vinyl around it. They made the material sit pretty smooth, at first anyway, but they had skipped out on adding more padding, or adhesives for that matter. At least that made taking it apart easier.

I cheated a little here: I washed this original pad as is, let it dry, and then added foam padding.
Some spray adhesive, a 1” foam pad cut to fit, some more adhesive, and a piece cut from a fabric remnant I had snagged for all of $3.14 who knows how long ago, because these things happen.

Eventually, I will make something to cover the back too. Hopefully in less than 3 years.

Now accepting applications from forniphiles, necrophiles, and cannibals who'd like to be included in my last will and testament.
Seeking depraved, subhuman creatures drowning in spiritual delusion, but the civilized and/or agnostic are encouraged to apply. Nihilists will be immediately rejected.
Please include CV with references. Cover letters should not exceed four hundred words.
The deadline will be extended into perpetuity until my tragic demise. My lawyer will contact any applicants selected prior to that time for a formal interview.

I got given a heap of home grown mandarines recently but I literally couldn’t eat all of them. So these babies, and some of their rind, are going into the freezer for future cooking adventures.
Waste not, want not.

Ripped cuffs!!
This was my dad’s jacket once upon a time, now passed down to me. It has lasted the trials of time, through many years of wear and tear, only to start breaking down. Everything breaks eventually; everything will break down to nothing at some point.
Us thrifty dumpster people? We know how to get the absolute longest use(s) out of anything.
Naturally, my hoard of cloth scrap is going to be put to use. I have an old square of fabric that matches the original jacket’s color nicely sense I refused to toss it. It’s not strong enough on it’s own to act as a replacement, so I’m going to layer it on top of another stronger jacket-like material.

My favorite post-thanksgiving activity, stock!
Tumblr media
Two birds worth, since my father has to smoke one and my mother has to roast one.
Tumblr media
Just over eight quarts after it was strained off and the dregs discarded. Now it goes into a covered crate on the back porch to cool overnight!
About half of the stock will be distributed back to the family for use throughout the year, and the rest will stay with me.

Me: I don't want so much fat on this pork I'm cooking, I'm gonna trim it.
Also me: Shame to waste these trimmings, I'm gonna render them down.
Also me: mmm cracklings nom nom nom
Jar of rendered pork fat. Not all of it from today; about half is saved bacon dripping.

Pumpkin Process
   A primer on pumpkin butchery:
Start, if you’ve never done it before, with a smallish pumpkin. Cut in half with a big cleaver and scrape out the seeds.
Tumblr media
(the grapes are just snacks for the cook)
Chop it into strips.
Tumblr media
Cut the rind off the strips and then cut the flesh into chunks.

This is the part where I {thought I would} save a lot of time by putting it in a microwave safe bowl and microwaving it until tender. However, my microwave died. It’s . . less than 9 months old, but it died. Dammit. So we’ll use the stove method.*
Tumblr media
I put just a little water in the bottom of the pot, and cooked it on low heat (stirring every few minutes) until the chunks were tender enough to mash with a spoon. The mashed pumpkin can be used in pies or baked goods. You could stir in some brown sugar and cinnamon and serve it hot as a side dish. Soup. You name it. Enjoy! Any amount you can’t use within a few days you can freeze.
* There is also a roast-in-the-oven method, also good.
