Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer, DLS – Turbo, 2023. Singer have presented 2 new cars in their Dynamics & Lightweighting Study series based on 964 air-cooled 911 models made between 1989 and 1994. The car in Blood Orange has been specified by its owner to emphasize track performance, featuring a high-downforce rear wing with adjustable upper element and a track-oriented front fascia with larger splitter. The car in Moet Blanc has been specified by its owner to be road-focused, including an aero-optimized rear ducktail spoiler and road-oriented front fascia which reduce drag. Both are powered by 3.8 litre, 4-valves per cylinder flat-six engines with twin turbochargers, electric wastegates, air-to-water intercooling and a horizontally mounted, electrically powered fan. This evolution of the engine developed for DLS restorations enables power outputs over 700 HP at more than 9000 rpm.
Every afternoon, I hear a really bad-ass four-banger exhaust scream. It sounds like there’s a race car going down my block. Every time I hear it, I think that the kanjozoku – Osaka’s feared Honda Civic street racers – are getting ready to tear up my street and start a street fight with the cops. Our civilization will finally honour the small-displacement economy street racer in the way that it must in order to survive. As it gets closer, I realize it isn’t a high-revving Honda at all, but instead something industrial and rude.
And then they turn the corner and it turns out to be my middle-aged neighbour, Heng, who owns a 1995 Kia Sephia with a hole in the muffler. He’s not going fast, but he’s also not embarrassed of the meaty shriek either. Once, he saw me mowing the lawn as he went past, and dumped the clutch to give it a quick rev-up, making a sound that was not unlike a lawn tractor winning the Indy 500. I am already jealous of his expensive, modern car, which features amenities like “mirrors” and “overhead camshafts,” whatever those are. Why does he have to rub it in that way?
I don’t say anything. I can’t. He’s too fast, and he’s definitely too loud. Whatever I yell is just drowned out by the wall of sound generated by the muffler-less Ford/Mazda BP engine. By the time I can hear myself think, he’s turned the other corner and parked the car. The only thing I could do is to sabotage his car somehow: but how do you sabotage a car to make it quieter?
To answer my question, I turned to AI. Sorry, I mistyped that. I turned to Al, my former mechanic buddy who lives at the bar. Medical reasons. Anyway, Al suggested going onto eBay and picking up the cheapest turbocharger I could find. Heng wouldn’t mind having the extra zoot of a turbo, his iron-block four can easily take wastegate pressure without an intercooler, and Dodge applied to the government to have a turbocharger legally described as a kind of muffler. It’d keep the cops off of our block, which would make the $65 I passed to Shenzhen Farm Supply a work of philanthropy.
The next time I saw Heng, he was pulling a savage one-tire-fire down the street, the open differential straining to keep up with the mighty puff of additional air. He was genuinely fast now, and did not need to be loud. He did a perfect autocross tripod turn around the corner, and dropped into hyperspace as soon as the wheel straightened out. All I heard was the pleasant whoosh of a wastegate and the roar of a badly-worn wheel bearing, which was inaudible over the previous exhaust noise. I probably saved his life, I told myself as I returned to my garage. There’s no reason to have such a loud car in this day and age, I chuckled while firing up the open headers on my daily-driver Volare and watching the visible edge of the nitromethane flames play on what was left of the hood paint.

Rocketship. This incredible Audi R8 GT4 from Iroz Motorsport debuted in the Dodson Motorsport booth, at the 2022 SEMA Show. This entire chassis has been converted from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive to handle the 2800HP from the twin turbocharged V10 equipped with Xona Rotor X5C turbos, AMS Performance intake manifold, Tial wastegates & blowoff valves, and Iroz intercoolers. It puts all of that power down through a Dodson Motorsport 10-plate clutch to 18x8.5 Forgeline one piece forged monoblock GS1R front wheels and 18x12 Forgeline forged monoblock GS1R Beadlock rear wheels finished in Satin Black with Satin Black beadlock rings! Stuart Gary’s Superbird and the need for speed A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I dreamed of owning a Falcon GT hardtop just like the one my childhood hero Allan Moffat raced at Bathurst. Eventually, I bought an old rust ridden 1976 XB orange Ford Fairmont GS and slowly rebuilt it into my dream car – sort of like the black Falcon Interceptor out of Mad Max. Instead of a supercharger (which was fake in the movie car anyway) my car is equipped with a genuine 1000 hp twin turbocharged 351 under the hood. I often drove this beast from Sydney to Darwin when I was working as a radio broadcaster and journalist at 8DN. It was my daily ride for the commute from the suburbs to the city when I moved to 3UZ in Melbourne. And I got a great shot of it next to Brocky’s 05 Commodore when it was on display in Newcastle while I was working for the ABC at 2NC. Mind you this was always a thirsty beast – just four miles per gallon on the old scale -- a run from Newcastle to Sydney required two tanks of fuel! The heart of the beast is a specially built engine originally put together by Bob Matic at Ford Muscle Parts and later further modified by Ian Benson at Benson's Turbos. For the technically minded, the 351 Cleveland V8 powering the beast is fully blue printed, shot peened, and micro-polished. It’s based around a four bolt Aussie block fitted with 4V O-ringed open chambered BOSS heads, twin TO4 Garrett air-research turbo chargers with 21-pound wastegates, turbo dish pistons, Carrillo alloy rods, stainless steel crank, and a windage tray sump. It uses a three-inch stainless-steel twin exhaust system. The block is cooled by a four-core radiator and there's a separate radiator for the gearbox oil. Those thousand ponies are fed through a 12 inch drag clutch and four speed top loader gearbox to a custom-made drive shaft and GTHO yoke, into a nine-inch LSD and 35 spline rear axles. The Falcon is totally street legal with an engineer’s certificate to prove it. I also own a De Tomaso Pantera, but the two cars are totally different. While the Falcon has a deep throated thunderous growl, rumbling like the approaching storm it is - the Pantera has a short loud bark. The Pantera is very fast off the line (0 to 100 in around 3 seconds) and amazingly nimble -- even twitchy through the corners. But it holds on to the road as if attached to guide rails all the way to its top speed of over 300 KPH. On the other hand, the Falcon is a very different beast. It’s much slower off the line, with those turbos taking a while to spin up to boost. But once that turbo whistle starts, you’re suddenly thrust backwards into your seat and the beast hunkers down and begins accelerating like a bat out of hell -- easily slipping beyond the old 200 MPH mark (320 KPH) as the world outside flashes past. The beast eventually tops out at just over 342 KPH – close enough to warp speed for anyone. It’s a true adrenaline pumping rush taking you to the edge and beyond. Yet, it all changed once I started taking flying lessons. Flying aircraft is a totally different world. Looking down from above, life at ground level suddenly seemed so limiting and two dimensional. I still own both cars – but seldom drive them.
