A little late BUT I just finished reading watchmen for the first time a week or so ago. What are your thoughts on the ending of the comics? Have you seen the show and did you like it?
u are never late in fact ur the first person whos asked me. thank u pls tell me ur thoughts on the comic i love thoughts :)
(comic spoilers bc i think i have mutuals who r currently reading it)
i will literally never fully understand the choice of the squid ending for watchmen. and i will always be sitting there going “jesus christ that came out of left field. maybe the movie was right when changing the ending” one moment then the next settle on “yeah ok thats fine.”
i do like the bitter climax with the fact that they couldn’t stop adrian. it’s realistic, honestly, and any sort of happy conclusion would’ve just felt tonally off. i don’ttttt like dan and laurie in the ending though (AGAIN THE MOVIE WAS RIGHT HAVING DAN WITNESS RORSCHACH’S DEATH AND NOBODY CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. LAURIE AND DAN DIDNT NEED TO FUCK BY A POOL) & i just. i will never be free from blonde mustache civilian dan it haunts me.
(tidbit aside. hilarious to me in doomsday clock dan and laurie have a daughter who is a natural bright blonde despite nobody in her family actually BEING blonde)
i’ve watched the show. as a white person i cannot fully speak on the race politics that were trying to be established during it. there are some weird fucking moments though in relation to it that can easily sour a generally well-produced and well-acted show.
writing is shit though. it’s so interesting in the beginning of the series but then they feel the need to have 20 plottwists that, while MAKING SENSE, do NOT need to be there. also adrian’s b plot is hysterical and awful. i love seeing him be fucking insane and goofy but it is so tonally different from the rest of the show it feels exactly like how the squid ending does to me.
good casting though 👍 especially better than the movie. like yeah. that’s what laurie would look like at that age. probably what she’d act like too. maybe not part of the FUCKING FBI but it’s explained so???
my favorite full circle moment though is that they filmed the climax of the series in my small hometown shopping square. which made me scream when i saw it.

Watched the Watchmen movie (ha). I suppose it's about as good a film adaptation as can be expected but the comic is vastly better. I really really didn't like the casting for Ozymandias, they played him like Lysanderoth when the whole point of him is that he did not change one bit from the hero he (and everyone) thought he was, he just changed the stakes. Mars was not done justice at all, especially Laurie's epiphany. I want to like how Dan mourned Rorschach, but I don't. I feel like him dying alone and rejected in the snow is a direct and intentional parallel to the Comedian dying alone and rejected in the gutter and having Dan as witness undercuts the theme even though it emphasizes their relationship. Anyways I'm going to rotate this in my brain for 300 years thanks.

Omg I could talk about Watchmen for hours! I go back to it every few years and find something new. I do love Rorschach and I think his storyline is the best but short king freaks me out much. Also feels like the film version robbed us of an amazing ending, I just wanted to see my big squid alien 💔
Like...there's a lot I dislike about Snyder's Watchmen but Ozymandias and the Squid are easily the most infuriating
Ozymandias in the film is WAY too evil and cold. If you've never read the story you can determine he killed the Comedian pretty easily and it had nowhere near the amount of impact the comic does. Ozymandias in the comic looks and acts like he's doing the right thing and is 100% sure of it right until the very end when Jon says that nothing lasts forever. Fuck's sake, him gleefully jumping and cheering when the squid decimated half of NYC is so jarring and messed up that it becomes hilarious AND disturbing. It's why he's such a compelling villain; he truly thinks that this horrible evil plan is good because it's for the GREATER good. He's the world's smartest man and the most Golden Boy looking hero in the story for a reason, and it lends to the reveal of how horrible he really is.
Movie!Oz is so cold, so aloof, and has nowhere near the level of emotion that he should. The entire movie is a lot colder looking thanks to Snyder's throbbing hard erection for washed out color palettes tbf. AND, changing the Squid to framing Dr. Manhattan also makes no sense. Why would Comedian be so horrified and shocked by...whatever the fuck he saw in the film version? And how does framing Manhattan for killing half of NYC lead to world peace when the ENTIRE POINT in the original was to make a fake OUTSIDE threat the world can team up against. The Russians, Chinese, and Cuban governments would be doubling down on fighting since the US can't be trusted to keep its giant walking god-nuke in check on their own fucking soil.
And Oz not being this way fucks up other aspects of the story. The entire reason Comedian goes insane is because he realized the best hero among them was the worst, and the only one who knows and can do something to stop it and be a hero...is HIM. Him, the Vietnamese war butcher. The attempted rapist. The woman beater. The selfish evil drunkard piece of shit. And it's the worst joke he's ever heard. And it's telling that the only two people who refuse to go along with Oz's plan are the two people that are arguably the worst morally to most people: Comedian's a given, but Rorschach is the ONLY one at the end who refuses to go along and tries to tell people the truth. Rorschach, the conspiratorial right-wing Truman-worshipping asshole, who believes that something like the Hiroshima bombing was for the greater good/justified, cannot stand by as a hero and let Oz get away with it. And he dies standing by that choice.
I still agree with Moore's opinion that his works can't be adapted and that's why he never wants credit on those adaptations, but I think the only ways Watchmen can work are with a motion comic (like the one that exists and is pretty damn good) or MAYBE a miniseries. 12-13 episodes, each one about an hour long, boom. Pacing issues are much less of a problem. That way we get more scenes like the pirate comic and the news stand crew as a whole that are small but vital to the context of the story. The pirate comics are explicitly a reflection/metaphor for Oz himself: the sailor goes to disgusting morbid lengths to survive and not be killed by the ship full of monsters, only to realize when he gets home that he's become one and has nowhere to go home to. NYC getting nuked is horrific in the comics, but what gets you is seeing these characters who you've come to know disintegrating. The kid and the news guy coming to hold into him when the flash hits and they all die still chokes me up even when I know what's coming.
Also hot take but even though Laurie and Dan are cute together, I don't think Laurie should've ended up with anyone. Dan is easily the least fucked up choice since Manhattan dated her when she was SIXTEEN, WHAT THE FUCK JON, but I think she should've had the chance to find herself outside of the context of men she's been with all her life. She's been with Jon since she was a teenager and immediately falls for Dan. Maybe she needs time to process everything on her own, yk?

It's fascinating how Ashton is so desperate for legacy and a connection to their past, but they completely ignore the lessons of their own history.

Awright looks like we’ve still got a few hours before The Star Beast goes live so in the meantime here are some of my favorite bonkers details from the original comic that I hope make it into the adaptation:
The “Most-High” chair
Multiple characters say “poppycock”
The Doctor folds and throws a “paper spaceship”
The Wrarth Warriors have tongues with fingers on them
The Doctor gets a bomb surgically implanted in his stomach, writes it off as a tummy ache until he’s about to explode, and saves himself with some lead roofing
Flashback to [SPOILER] in a war zone dressed like Sgt. Rock
The Doctor builds a flashbang out of a lightbulb, a toaster, and a TV set
The Meep is blue but only in America

Stranger Things has always been great in seamlessly weaving in supernatural events that could be mistaken as "biblical" events all leading up to The Satanic Panic rearing it's ugly head in Hawkins but they really outdid themselves with Henry/Peter/Vecna.
Stranger Things managed to take 3 characters believed to be separate entities and seamlessly weave them together leading to the twist that they are indeed all one in the same being kinda like the idea behind The Holy Trinity.
Vecna: The Father
Henry: The Son
Peter/001: The Holy Ghost/Spirit
Vecna as The Father and ever looming presence over the entire series and pulling the strings behind the scenes until Stranger Things 4. The ominous "He". It's also interesting that some of his victims look like a crucifix moments before they die. He's the final form and most powerful of the three.
Henry as The Son. The youngest and the one who feels the burden of his "purpose" (carrying a cross on his back) to rid the world of its greatest scourge: humans. He is still learning about his abilities and his/their limits and accidentally "sacrifices" himself when he over exerts himself while murdering his family. He exhibits the characteristics of a religious/zealot serial killer.
Peter/001 as The Holy Ghost/Spirit. The most mysterious and underestimated entity in the Holy Trinity and when the audience is first introduced to Peter his is mysterious and the audience underestimates him and his importance. He is a spiritual guide, of sorts, to El throughout her entire journey. Starting off as a friend to a lonely and bullied El who also helped her tap deeper into her abilities to being the unseen entity continously pushing El (and most of the cast) to the limits of their abilities.
Vecna definitely views himself as a god or an entity above all others. The song playing in the background while he's telling his story to El and Nancy is Doctor Manhattan's theme from Zack Snyder's Watchmen. You know? The one that plays when Jonathan Osterman is torn apart atom by atom and puts himself back together atom by atom becoming Doctor Manhattan whom ppl view and treat as a god.
I just really LOVE good solid thought out story telling and Stranger Things does not miss

@volfoss replied to your post “ok time to continue the boys (im on s2 ep1 halfway...”:
Would you recommend it so far? I'd read a bit of the comics and was NOT impressed but I heard the show was better
oh its definitely better than the comics full stop. everyone in this show sucks and horrible things keep happening but the writing is strong enough that they give you just enough happy moments to get you through it. if you know the dark superhero genre you can basically predict what the set up will be (the first two episodes i was able to call out immediately what was abt to happen because of watchmen) but the conclusions are realistic and gorey and batshit.
if you want a tv show that feels like youre constantly about to have a heart attack i would recommend. yes i will be watching the rest of it. fair warning that late s1 & so far s2 has an arc "redeeming" a rapist and it's written kinda. really fucking weirdly (i'm seeing it play out and its like oh no hes still the same pathetic bastard as ever but did u really need to Do That)

Ngl, I'm a bit disappointed by the decision to make Soldier Boy a fraud instead of the war veteran. Sure, it fits in The Boys' "all superheroes are fake" paradigm, but, at the same time, this character was more interesting and layered as an actual forgotten hero and patriot who is also a horrible person stuck in the past and corrupted by fame. The conflict between these two parts, combined with all kinds of trauma, made him more real.
It certainly doesn't help that before and after this reveal, Soldier Boy shows himself as a really competent and coolheaded... well, soldier, even when high and in distress. I mean, come on, this guy escaped from the lab in Moscow naked and on the next day, he already was in NY, hunting for his ex. Right in this episode, he found and ambushed Mindstorm and Hughie after they teleported. This shit is impressive. His only idiotic moment was aiming a launcher at an ammunition depot 40 years ago, but it still looked more like him messing with Mallory. The show suddenly telling us (in episode 7 out of 8) that he's just a poser doesn't just make his past a lie but implies viewers shouldn't have believed in things they actually saw.
Please note that I'm not talking about Soldier Boy being a good guy. The show wasn't subtle about him being a dick (even though they could've been more straightforward about his crimes from the start). I'm talking about the disconnect between what The Boys tells us about this character and what it shows.
The choice to make Soldier Boy a fake robs the character of any depth and turns him into Homelander Lite. Which probably is a point, but also extremely boring. It also makes the overall story cheaper if the only type of villains in it (aside from Giancarlo Esposito) is an overpowered asshole that buys his own hype.
